Resolve To Make A Difference Local Organizations Seek Volunteers, Donations By Francine Fulton
With the arrival of the new year, many people make resolutions to make positive changes in their lives. Representatives of local nonprofit organizations hope that people will resolve to volunteer in 2019, donating their time and talents. People are invited to donate tangible items as well. The Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) is currently seeking volunteers willing to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills through its adult tutoring program. No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. For more information about becoming
a volunteer tutor, readers may contact Debbie Rikess, adult tutoring program coordinator, at drikess@cc-oic.org or 610-280-2618. More information about the OIC is available at www.ccoic.org or www.facebook.com/ChescoOIC. The Community Warehouse Project (CWP) of Chester County, a nonprofit organization that collects and redistributes donated furniture and household goods to people in need, is seeking volunteers to help sort through donations at its Downingtown warehouse. The organization is also in need of donations of quality used furniture. Those who have furniture to donate to CWP are asked to contact the agency in advance by visiting www.communitywarehouseproject.com. Especially needed are single beds with bed frames. For more information, readers may call 484-473-4360, visit the website or search for “Community Warehouse Project of Chester County” on Facebook. See Volunteer Opportunities pg 5
Children and adults in need were able to enjoy warm and cozy pajamas this holiday season thanks to a pajama drive held by students in Megan Bauer’s fourth-grade class at Beaver Creek Elementary School, Downingtown. As part of the first-time event, students donated 240 sets of new pajamas in sizes for newborns through adults. Some of the pajamas were purchased with the $500 that was raised through a schoolwide coin drive. Bauer reported that the pajamas, which were collected and purchased over a two-week period of time, were delivered to two nonprofit organizations: Home of the Sparrow in Exton and Feast of Justice, a nonprofit organization that distributes food and clothing to those need and provides educational programs, Bible studies and
counseling. “Feast of Justice is located in northeast Philadelphia and serves over 200 families,” Bauer stated. “The mission of Home of the Sparrow is to partner with women and children facing homelessness.” Bauer explained that the students were looking for a community service project when they learned about the Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive offered by Scholastic Book Clubs. For every pair of pajamas that is donated, the organization will donate a brandnew book to accompany the pajamas. The Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive at Beaver Creek was organized in partnership with Pajama Program, a nonprofit organization that provides atrisk children with gifts of pajamas and books to help create a bedtime ritual for children affected by instability. More information about the organization is available at www.pajamaprogram.org. See Pajama Drive pg 6

The Sweet Jane’s Wish (SJW) Foundation recently awarded two $3,000 scholarships to senior members of the tennis teams from Downingtown high schools. The Downingtown High School West award was presented to Allie Campbell, and Grace Yatcilla was the scholarship winner from Downingtown High School East. The SJW Foundation, a fund of the Chester County Community Foundation, honors the memory of Jane Gerlach Booge, who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2012 at age 47. Booge attended Downingtown High School from 1981 to 1984 and played on the girls’ tennis team. In addition to the tennis scholarships bestowed in the fall, the SJW Foundation presents two additional scholarships to senior members of the Downingtown high school ice hockey teams every spring. This year, the scholarship awards have been increased from $2,500 to $3,000. Board member Alexandra Grigson explained that students must apply for the scholarships, with the process including writing an essay. Their coaches submit recommendations as well. “They have to be good stu-

dents, and they have to show compassion, empathy, determination and kindness - some of the same traits that Jane demonstrated,” said Grigson. “That is judged from the essays and what the coaches say about the kids.” She noted that Jane’s father, Jerry Gerlach, SJW president, sends out scholarship applications to the coaches. “The coaches distribute (the applications), and the students (complete them),” Grigson said. “We go through and read them; we assess who really sounds like they are representing Jane.” In the applications, students are invited to write about their experiences playing sports and their extracurricular activities. Grigson said that she was especially impressed with the essays written by this year’s scholarship recipients. “(The students) talked about their community service and what they have tried to do to change their culture,” Grigson said. “We are all capable of generosity of spirit, and these two young women demonstrated this daily. We are honored to have them join the previous 18 recipients of this award.” Representatives of the board present the scholarships to the students at their schools’ sports banquets. To date, SJW Foundation has awarded $50,000 in scholarships to seniors who have participated in the student tennis and ice hockey programs and are furthering their education at a university, college or trade school. In addition to the scholarships, the SJW Foundation provides financial support to Living
Sweet Jane’s Wish Foundation board members recently presented a donation to Living Beyond Breast Cancer’s Cis B. Golder Fund, which provides grants to local women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Beyond Breast Cancer’s (LBBC) Cis B. Golder Fund, which provides small grants to local women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and are experiencing overwhelming out-of-pocket health care costs. LBBC in partnership with Bringing Hope Home, offers grants to breast cancer patients to help with rent, mortgage, utilities, groceries, child care and the costs associated with physical therapy, fitness and nutrition management programs. Chester County resident Diane Hagar is a local recipient of a grant. The grant allowed her to pay her oil bill balance in time for the winter season. “The support from my family and friends and the organizations like LBBC are truly what gets me through each day, especially the dark ones,” Hagar sated. “I am blessed despite cancer.” More information about the grant program is available at www.lbbc.org. SJW Foundation scholarships and donations are funded by an annual golf outing, dinner and auction. This year’s event will be
held on Monday, Sept. 9, at Whitford Country Club in Exton. For more information, readers may visit www.SweetJanes Wish.com or www.facebook.com/ SweetJanesWish. Affordably priced housing for professionals, those in the trades, first-time home buyers, seniors, and those looking to locate in Chester County is needed today and in the coming years, according to housing professionals at the Citizen Planners’ Breakfast held recently. The two-hour Citizen Planners’ Breakfast was sponsored by Chester County 2020 and the Chester County Planning
Commission. Brian O’Leary, executive director of the Chester County Planning Commission, began the event by saying that an estimated 55,000 new homes will be needed by 2035 for the county’s growing population and that the county must balance the need for growth with the need to preserve open space. Lisa Moore, manager of Kennett Township, told the audience that her municipality is looking to quality affordable
housing and workforce housing. Several such projects are going on in the township and neighboring Kennett Square borough, she said. Chester County 2020 is a nonprofit organization helping to create livable communities by bringing people together to find common ground and then working to transform dialogue into action. think it’s fun and they want to become a member, then they have to audition.” Once accepted into the chorus, members pay yearly dues to participate. Spiro explained that the singers are placed together by voice style to achieve the unique barbershop harmony sound. “With a cappella music, (you not only have to) sing your own part, you have to hold it against three other parts. It does take a lot of practice,” she said. “We sing four-part a cappella. The lead is the melody line. The bass is lower and considered a second melody. The high part is the tenor and the fourth part is baritone, which actually makes the barbershop sound.” The Ringing Hills Chorus is a member of Sweet Adelines International, a worldwide organization of women who sing barbershop harmony and promote the musical style through education, competition and performance. “There are some other a cappella groups that are related to churches, but we belong to the international organization and we go to competitions,” explained Spiro. “(Sweet Adelines
International) has choruses in places like Sweden and England.” In May, the Ringing Hills Chorus, under the direction of Linda Beaver, won the Most Improved Chorus Award during a regional competition held in Hershey that included choruses from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. Spiro said that group members have performed at churches, hospitals, retirement homes and more. They also sang the national anthem at the Reading Fighthin’ Phils and Philadelphia Phillies baseball games. “ We are not professional; these are everyday people who like to sing,” Spiro said, noting that members are of various age groups. “The majority are older women, but we have women in their 20s and 30s as well.” Group members are from Berks, Montgomery and Chester counties. “It’s a very widespread geographical area that people come from,” Spiro said. “About 40 percent of the chorus comes from Pottstown, Phoenixville and Douglassville. The rest come from all over the place, like Leesport, West
Chester and Kimberton.” Spiro added that the barbershop style is unique because it is entirely vocal music. Only a pitch pipe is used to help the singers find their opening notes. “You memorize your music and learn a tune by ear that’s why we practice each week,” she said with a smile. “If you like this kind of music, it is so much fun.” For more information about the chorus, readers may visit www.ringinghillschorus.org or search for “Ringing Hills Chorus” on Facebook.
Chorus from pg 1 By Francine Fulton
As part of an annual holiday tradition, members of the Ringing Hills Chorus helped the community celebrate the season by offering performances in December. The group, composed of 22 members, performed a cappella Christmas carols and holiday music at Keystone Villa in Douglassville, for the Scattered Seeds Garden Club at the Applebrook Golf Club in Malvern and on the Polar Express Colebrookdale Holiday Train tour in Boyertown. “It was a busy December,” said Rosemary Spiro, who has been a chorus member for more than 20 years. Performing for the public is just one activity of the chorus, which also takes part in regional competitions. New singers are always welcome, and prospective members may attend an upcoming rehearsal. Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays from 6:45 to 9:30 p.m. at St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church, 1188 Benjamin Franklin Highway, Douglassville. “We invite people to come as a guest and just get up on the risers and sing with us,” said Spiro. “We provide sheet music. and participates in District 1 of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA). CCS previously participated with nine other schools in the Tri-County Independent School League (TCISL). Pursuing membership in the BAL was a yearlong process that included a letter of request, an application, meetings, and presentations to BAL member school principals and coaches by John
Allen, director of athletics for CCS, and Graham Dryburgh, CCS high school assistant principal. BAL members then voted on whether to induct Collegium into the BAL. Their decision was unanimous. Allen said he foresees BAL membership considerably increasing CCS Athletics’ visibility. BAL membership will also create natural rivalries with other local schools in the BAL. CCS will
be able to play against BAL teams on a continuous basis - meaning its games and playoff appearances will now hold greater value. CCS has six school buildings and one administration building in Exton’s Oaklands Corporate Center. Current enrollment tops 2,900 students in kindergarten through grade 12. Creamy Ham ‘n’ Broccoli
Did You Know?
Busy families that do not have the time to spend an hour or more in the kitchen preparing weeknight dinners can turn to slow cookers to do the work for them. Slow cookers cook foods on a low temperature over several hours. Slow cookers do not require constant attention, making them ideal for people who want to prep meals before leaving the house and then return to a hot meal in the evening. Many foods, from breakfasts to appetizers to desserts, can be prepared with slow cookers. But slow cookers are perhaps best suited for hearty meals, such as this recipe for Creamy Ham ‘n’ Broccoli from “Casseroles, Slow Cooker and Soups” (RDA Enthusiast Brands) by Taste of Home editors.

Bauer noted that the fourth-grade students designed their own posters and placed them around the school to promote the pajama drive, and they also visited other classrooms at the school to explain the project. To celebrate the success of the pajama drive at Beaver Creek, Downingtown Mayor Josh Maxwell visited the school to congratulate the students on Dec. 20 - Pajama Day - when students and faculty members were permitted to wear pajamas to school. He appeared on the school television station with Dr. Dawn Lawless, principal, and students Colin Gordon and Caroline Conway. “It says a lot about the character of the students and the faculty
here,” said Maxwell. “Everyone in the Downingtown community appreciates their efforts.” “One of our school’s expectations is to be kind,” Lawless added. “This is really a great example of being kind and giving back to the community at this time of year.” Bauer said that the students were excited to see tangible results of their efforts, noting that the students well surpassed their goal of collecting 50 sets of pajamas. “To feel the students’ success was the best part,” she stated.

A Holiday Tradition Loretta McClarigan, a teacher at St. John’s Preschool Learning Center, located in St. John’s United Methodist Church, 3001 E. Lincoln Highway, Paradise, has been working with children for a long time. One special holiday project that McClarigan has made a St. John’s tradition is creating gingerbread houses with students and parents each December. “Some (students) make light posts, pretzel fences, sidewalks with cereal, or candy cane sleds for the gummy bear (inhabitants) to ride,” observed McClarigan, who oversees the children with assistant Jane Horst. This year, on Dec. 18 and 19, the 26 students, including a class of 3-year-olds and a class of 4- and 5-year-olds, along with parents and grandparents, spent time building the holiday confections at the school. “We … decorate with chocolates and
mini animal crackers. Gummy bears are (the student’s) favorite,” noted McClarigan, who added that the parent/child interaction inherent in the activity is important, but that the annual event also aims to foster creativity, constructing, and sharing. “We start with a small milk carton, cut graham crackers to just the right sizes, and then ‘glue’ (them) to (the milk) carton using icing,” said McClarigan. According to Horst, the secret to successful gingerbread house making is the sticky frosting made at the preschool using a mix for powdered meringue. A few weeks prior to the project, parents signed up to bring in a variety of cereals, colored candies, gumdrops, pretzels, candy canes, marshmallows, and other edible items to decorate the houses. The activity wrapped up with homemade Christmas cookies, cheese and crackers, and fruit brought by parents. “(We had) hot chocolate too,” noted
McClarigan. An emphasis on the spirit of Christmas is a part of the annual activity. “We have a bulletin board up that says, ‘Christmas is the time for caring and sharing,’” said McClarigan. “We try to (extend) that over into (the message that) every day is for caring and sharing.” St. John’s Preschool Learning Center serves more than 30 children. Classes are provided five days per week from September until late May. Readers who would like more information may call 717-687-6711.

OTA provides “wish list” items to military members serving abroad. “We sang for that charity for several years and raised lots of money because people were so (supportive) of what our military was doing,” Holloway said. She added that the upcoming spring concerts will also benefit David’s Drive 831, a local veterans support organization. Holloway hopes that local singers will consider joining the choir and taking part in the upcoming performances. “We thought it would be nice to let people know that they can sing with us if they desire,” she added. “It would be great to get some new faces.” For more information, prospective singers may contact McFalls at 610-316-9765 or Holloway at 610-656-4054.

Support Group For Caregivers To Start By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
A new Alzheimer’s and Dementia Caregivers Support Group, presented by the Alzheimer’s Association, Delaware Valley Chapter, will be offered in the church house at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, Oxford. Meetings will take place on the first Saturday of each month at 10 a.m., beginning on Jan. 5, 2019. “Were going to start on Saturdays, but if the group feels that is not going to meet their needs then we’ll take a consensus of the group and see what they prefer,” said Betsy Bradford, who is co-facilitator for the group along with Ellen Neff. The aim of the group is to help caregivers build a support system with people who understand the difficulties they are facing. Group members can exchange practical information on caregiving challenges and possible solutions, as well as talk through issues and ways of
coping. They may also simply share their feelings. The group will also help people learn about helpful resources in the community. “Every quarter we’re required to have an educational session, but between times we are whatever the group needs,” Bradford said. “We’re not leaders; we’re facilitators. We’re going to share differences and commonalities and try to support one another.” Both Bradford and Neff are nurses and have experience with the issues caregivers are facing. Bradford, who is also on the church’s health care ministry team, is a retired nurse who worked in geriatrics and has experience with veterans’ support groups, plus she has a personal interest in the topic. “My mother had Alzheimer’s for 14 years and was in a community nursing home in the area, and there was no support group. I always said (that) when I retired, I
was going to have a support group in the area,” Bradford said. She noted that the closest support groups to the Oxford area are in Kennett Square and Elkton, Md. “One of the things we’ve been trying to identify with the parish is
