A three-day, nine-hour tutor training workshop will be held at St. Francis-inthe-Fields Episcopal Church, 689 Sugartown Road, Malvern, on Thursday, Jan. 9; Monday, Jan. 13; and Tuesday, Jan. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC) in Downingtown opened its doors on Dec. 25 to offer a free Christmas Day dinner to the community. This was the seventh year that church members have served the meal. According to church member and event organizer Becky Bennington, this year’s dinner was one of the largest ever held at the church. “We had 110 register to attend, including volunteers,” she noted. The event began with a time of fellowship that included snacks such as cheese and crackers. Then, attendees were treated to a complete holiday See Hopewell UMC pg 5

Thanks to the efforts of local individuals and organizations, veterans who reside at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center had some extra holiday cheer this Christmas. The 10th annual Christmas Gift Wrapping Extravaganza, organized by David’s Drive 831 (DD831), was held on Dec. 13 at the VA’s Great Hall. During the event, approximately 200 volunteers wrapped 1,000 boxes that were distributed to veterans in need. The boxes were filled with various necessities, such as shampoo, toothbrushes and reusable water bottles, as well as puzzle books, CDs and snacks. The collection of items was valued at $28,000, according to David Turner Sr., DD831 founder and president. The Turner family started DD831 following the sudden passing of David Turner Jr. from a suspected cardiac arrhythmia in December 2009. David worked at the Coatesville VA and had a desire to help veterans in need. “David’s wish was to help veterans that needed assistance at the VA when he worked here. He never had the chance to help them, so when he passed, we decided to continue his wish of helping veterans,” Turner said. “It’s a community organization, and David guides us through.” As part of a separate effort that is in its third year, Hellertown resident Andrea Feher organized a gift drive via Facebook -

collecting hundreds of gifts for the 72 veterans in the Community Living Center and Hospice at the Coatesville VA. The gifts were delivered on Dec. 3 during a luncheon event. Feher worked closely with the VA staff in the long-term residential care units to find out what the veterans would like to receive. She then reached out to her donation network to supply the blankets, jackets, scarves, gift cards and personal care items that were requested. The effort began a few years ago when Feher was actively looking for a charity to support for the holidays and learned about the Coatesville VA. After contacting the VA, Feher listed the needed items on the Hellertown and Doylestown Community Facebook pages. She noted that the community members are so eager to participate each year that they begin making inquiries about the project in October and November. Feher stated, “(People ask), ‘What are we doing this year? Do we have a list yet?’” In addition, Transportation Management Association of Chester County (TMACC), a nonprofit corporation that oversees transportation needs among organizations and municipalities within Chester County, delivered hundreds of gifts for veterans at the Coatesville VA on Dec. 17. The gift items included coffee makers, blenders, microwaves, slow cookers and toaster ovens. The Coatesville VA is a major stop along the Coatesville Link bus route, and the event is the result of the partnership between TMACC and the VA. This year marks the seventh year that

CO Awareness from pg 1 Carly Marie Imbierowicz and her friend Daulton Pointek passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning in the vehicle they drove on the way home from a movie. A broken exhaust pipe allowed deadly carbon monoxide gas to enter the car through the passenger air vents. Both Carly and Daulton were students at Octorara Area High School. Donna explained that members of the fire company members will distribute the CO detectors to those in need. “We are trying to get (detectors) in homes where people may not be able to afford them. I needed to decide how to get them out, and the best way was through the fire company,” Donna said, noting that the detectors were donated by First Alert and True Value. “The (fire company members) were the first ones on the scene of Carly’s accident. It was important for us to donate them on that date,” she noted. Accepting the donation on behalf of the fire company were Doug Lapp, president; Doug B. Lapp, captain; and Mike Harris, deputy chief. In addition, Donna and Matt recently traveled to Harrisburg to meet with state Sen. Andy Dinniman, who sponsored Senate Resolution 265, which officially designated November 2019 as Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. “My husband and I make a tradition of going there every year for the Senate vote making November Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month in the entire state of Pennsylvania,” Donna said. Dinniman is also a supporter and

co-sponsor of Senate Bill 429, legislation that would require carbon monoxide detectors in college and university dorms, hotels and other lodging establishments, as well as at elementary schools and child care facilities if the facility uses a fossil fuel-burning heater or appliance or has an attached garage. Through Dinniman’s efforts, PennDOT also revised the Pennsylvania Driver’s Manual to include important information about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is called the “silent killer” because it is colorless, odorless and tasteless and cannot be detected by humans without the help of an alarm or detector. Depending on the degree and length of exposure, carbon monoxide poisoning can harm the central nervous system, cause permanent brain damage or damage the heart, leading to lifethreatening cardiac complications or death. Signs and symptoms include a dull headache, weakness or fatigue, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, shortness of breath, confusion, blurred vision and loss of consciousness. Residents are advised to take precautions against CO poisoning by installing carbon monoxide detectors along with smoke detectors in sleeping areas in their homes and checking their batteries twice a year. People should make a habit of opening the garage door before starting their cars, and they should never leave a car running with the door closed. Homeowners should not run
