Vintage “Base Ball” Players Seek Teammates By Francine Fulton
Members of the Brandywine Base Ball Club of West Chester, who come from all walks of life, are eager to talk about the reasons they love to play 1860s-style vintage “base ball,” which is how it was spelled in the 1860s, and to encourage others to join the team. The team will begin its competitive season in April. “It’s a gentlemen’s game. All the players are very friendly and passionate about the history and rules they played by,” said Jordan “Woody” Rajan of Glenmoore, an environmental specialist. “I enjoy dressing the part and re-enacting how games were played back in the 1860s.” Members of the Brandywine Base Ball Club of West Chester, including Jordan “Woody” Rajan (left photo), Alex “Cardigan” Brian “King” Kraeer of Marmelstein (center photo) and Brian “King” Kraeer (right photo), encourage prospective players to join them in playing 1860s-style See Base Ball Club pg 10 vintage base ball this upcoming season.

West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) will hold its first STEAM event on Tuesday, Feb. 12, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, and all fields will be represented at the event. The community is invited to view numerous interactive, hands-on displays presented by the school and supporters. The free event is designed to appeal to youngsters from prekindergarten through eighth grade and their families, and it should interest students from all schools, as well as WFCS students. The entire middle school staff from WFCS is involved in planning and implementing the event, including the English and social studies departments. The Academy high school-level students will also be involved as presenters. The idea for the event was generated by language arts department teacher Mark Fiscus, who is involved with the Envirothon competition and Nature Club at WFCS. He saw a similar presentation at a public school and was impressed by the presentations and by the enjoyable
atmosphere provided for the community. “It was a great evening. I really enjoyed going around looking at all the different tables and seeing what people were doing,” Fiscus said. “I presented it to the teachers here, and there was an enthusiastic response.” At least 20 stations will be set up in the multipurpose and art rooms, where visitors can walk to the different tables and participate. “The whole idea is these can be hands-on presentations. (Visiting) students can actually participate,” Fiscus said. “The main purpose is to have a community project where people come in and enjoy the evening.” In addition to the interactive stations, five eighth-grade students who will be taking their science fair projects to the Chester County-level competition will have their projects set up and ready to explain to visitors. WFCS principal Robbie Martin said that even though WFCS is a small Christian school, it keeps up with advances in education. “ W hat we do is take what we’ve got and move it forward to the best of our ability. We’re a forward-thinking school, and we’re very much doing what everybody else is doing,” he noted.

Sheriff’s Office from pg 1 working for the Aldan Borough Police Department and later the Delaware County Sheriff ’s Office, where he sometimes saw a copy of Welsh’s Wall of Fame photo at the Delaware County courthouse. When he heard about an opening in her office, he was eager to apply. The bulk of his spare time goes to family activities. Maura McMahon, a Montgomery County native, grew up surrounded by people involved in law enforcement - especially her father, who works as a defense attorney. She earned a degree in science from James Madison University in Virginia and interned in the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office before enrolling in Montgomery County Community College’s Police Academy. She graduated in 2017 and accepted a job as a police officer with the Western Berks Regional Police Department. She said she particularly enjoys the aspects of police work that merge her appreciation for scientific precision with her interest in helping others. In her spare time, McMahon is working toward her NRA firearms instructor certification. She also has a martial arts background in jiu-jitsu and Krav Maga and is a competitive distance runner in the area. David Pomroy received his law enforcement inspiration while growing up in a small town in Gloucester County, N.J. The first in his family to pursue a career in police work, he graduated from Rutgers University with a criminal justice degree. He received his Act 120 certification from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy in 2017; he is also certified to detect and classify improvised explosive devices. of sorts: He was an intern in the office this past summer. Inspired in part by an uncle who spent 20 years with the Philadelphia Police Department, Hagan majored in criminology at Penn State University. He graduated from Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy in December 2018. Hagan participates in a baseball league for adults and plays ice hockey. Brian Jefferson, a native of North Wales, planned a career in automotive technology, receiving training at A. Philip Randolph Career Academy in Philadelphia and the Automotive Training Center in Warminster. He shifted gears after being laid off from a job. Inspired by relatives and television shows, he attended Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy, graduating in 2011; he also joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Jefferson comes to the Sheriff’s Office from the Darby Borough Police Department, where he earned special recognition for rescuing a suicidal subject. In his spare time, he enjoys working out and spending time with his family. Edward Kebbekus is another familiar face to many who frequent the Chester County Justice Center. A native of New Jersey, he attended West Chester University, majoring in criminal justice. He subsequently worked at the George W. Hill Correctional Facility in Delaware County before joining Chester County’s Adult Probation Department in 2012. Kebbekus was eager to explore another aspect of law enforcement, and he credits his family with supporting his decision to attend Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy. After his graduation in 2017, he left Adult Probation and joined the Darby Township Police Department. When he is not working, Kebbekus enjoys traveling, camping, and working out. William Merola took a somewhat circuitous route to the Chester County Sheriff’s Office. He attended Upper Darby High, where Welsh appears on the school’s Wall of Fame, and he majored in leisure/sports studies at Kutztown University and began working in retail. In 2015, several police officers urged him to attend Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy. He graduated in 2015 and began

Chester County Sheriff Carolyn Bunny Welsh swore in 10 new deputies in January. The group of new deputies achieved a number of firsts, including its size, varied backgrounds, and gender composition: five males and five females. Laniece Edmondson, a Philadelphia native, graduated from the Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy in June 2017. Her career choice was inspired by her mother, a 30-year Philadelphia police officer. Edmondson comes to the Chester County Sheriff’s Office from the Darby Borough Police Department, where she assisted with the training of new officers. When she is not working, she is likely to be found somewhere outside or at the gym. She enjoys a host of outdoor pursuits, especially hiking and kayaking. Marjorie Gonzalez and Deborah Holmes were also sworn in. The pair became friends while working as security officers for the Sheriff’s Office and discovered they both aspired to become deputies. To obtain the required Act 120 certification, they enrolled in Delaware County Community College’s yearlong, part-time Police Academy program, enabling them to continue their day jobs. Holmes is a Coatesville High graduate who studied criminal justice at West Chester University. Gonzalez is a Navy veteran who grew up in Delaware County and attended Haverford High School and Millersville State College. Melissa Harrington grew up in an Air Force family and studied broadcast journalism at Hartwick College. Day theme, the event will have a focus on chocolate. Whipped hot chocolate will be offered along with chocolate-covered strawberries and pancakes with chocolate chips. Strawberries will also be available for sale to eat at home. Denver-area guitarist Phyllis Hummel will play acoustic guitar and sing a variety of romantic ballads throughout the event. Events will continue in March with an Irish-themed breakfast on Saturday, March 16, and a potpie sale. “In March, we will also do interpretive training activities for people who are interested in becoming tour guides for the historic Joanna site,” noted Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director. Programs for students will also be offered in 2019, and the HCVHA will work on completing two significant restoration projects, which include restoring the wheelwright shop and the bosh, which is the hottest part of furnace

We are restoring the original equipment from 1898,” Zerr pointed out. “We were awarded an $80,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) in Harrisburg to complete the project, which will cost about $180,000.” The site is also the location for three major annual festivals - the Hay Creek Festival in September, the Apple Festival in October and Christmas at Joanna. Information about the events will be available at the upcoming breakfast. “This year we are looking forward to attracting new families and retired people to join us in our quest to become an even more significant historical and educational center,” said Zerr. Net proceeds from all events are used by the HCVHA to support the educational programs and restoration of Joanna Furnace, located just off Route 10 on Furnace Road, north of Morgantown. It was terribly exciting for them. They have literally never seen snow in person,” he stated. “They were asking what it feels like when snow is touching your skin. The things we take for granted are so unique and special to them.” Bramucci said that teaching the classes online is extremely gratifying. “My student in Kenya said she hated algebra,” he recalled. “About two weeks ago, she said that I made algebra something
she could understand and something she enjoyed doing. That was the highest compliment; that’s the role of a teacher.” Bramucci had the opportunity to meet a student from China last spring who graduated from International Christian High School in Philadelphia after completing the online course. The student traveled to the area to participate in the graduation ceremonies with the other students. “To shake his hand was profoundly significant,” Bramucci noted. “It was a powerful moment.” Bramucci credits Tanna Whitton, president of the board of directors of the foundation, as well as the board members, for the success of the program. “(Tanna) and our board of directors are passionate about education and about supporting stu-

Amaretti Base 5 ounces amaretti 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter 5 tablespoons sugar Cardamom truffle filling 2 1/3 cups heavy cream 4 to 6 green cardamom pods, lightly bruised to open them 25 ounces dark chocolate (60-70 percent cocoa solids), grated 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, cubed 4 tablespoons chocolate liqueur Cardamom cocoa sugar 3 green cardamom pods 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa 1 10-inch cake pan with a removable base, base and sides lined with nonstick parchment paper To make the amaretti base, finely crush the amaretti in a food processor or put them in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin. Melt the butter and sugar in a pan over low heat, then stir in the amaretti crumbs. Press the mixture evenly over the base of the prepared cake pan and refrigerate for 20 minutes. To make the cardamom truffle filling, put the cream and
cardamom pods in a pan and heat until almost boiling. Remove from the heat and set aside to infuse for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, put the chocolate and butter in a saucepan. Strain the infused cream through a fine strainer onto the chocolate (the cream will be warm enough to melt the chocolate). If it doesn’t melt, warm over very low heat, stirring occasionally, but do not allow to boil. Stir in the liqueur, then set aside until almost cold, but not set. With an electric mixer, beat the chocolate mixture for a couple of minutes - this will give the cake a lovely airy texture. Pour onto the amaretti base. Let cool, then cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or up to 48 hours before serving. To make the cardamom cocoa sugar, remove the black seeds from the papery cardamom pods and put the seeds in a spice grinder with the sugar and cocoa. Grind to a powder. Carefully remove the cake from the pan and peel off the lining paper. Set on a chilled serving plate and sift the cardamom cocoa sugar evenly over the top. Serve immediately, cutting into very thin slices.

PA Hope Ride Announced The PA “Hope” Riders are aiming to help find a cure for cancer. The “Hope” Riders come from as far as Ohio and Florida and as close as Philadelphia, Hershey, and local neighborhoods. They aim to provide hope and support to those battling cancer and those who need that extra kindness to get them through each day. The “Hope” Riders are the 2019 American Cancer Society’s (ACS) PA Hope Ride bicyclists, who, on Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23, will pedal anywhere from 30 miles to more than 170 miles through central Pennsylvania, starting from the Hope Lodge in Hershey. Until then, “Hope” Riders will raise funds to support the Hope Lodges of Pennsylvania and other program services. PA Hope Ride cyclists may ride as individuals or as teams. Riders may participate in one or two days of the tour. Participating cyclists pay a registration fee and are provided with tips to reach individual fundraising goals. The Hershey Hope Lodge will be the start and finish of this year’s ride. The “Hope” Riders may pass through five of Pennsylvania’s counties and many rural small towns. On June 22, routes will include 30, 62, 70, and 100 miles. The route on June 23 will be 70 miles. All routes on either day will end at the Hershey Hope. On the route, cyclists of all skill levels enjoy a mix of scenic
byways, country roads, and trails. While experienced riders enjoy challenging options on portions of the route, intermediate and novice riders will have designated courses to fit their level of riding. Those who choose a one-day ride will finish at the Hope Lodge to a special finish line celebration. Those who are riding two days will finish their first day ride at Kutztown University campus, where they will share their adventures of the day at a sit-down dinner. Cyclists will be provided with all meals, rest stops, night-time accommodations, and full support from mechanics and safety personnel during their one- or two-day excursion. New Reporting Tool Available A tool for reporting suspicious activity surrounding the prescribing or dispensing of prescription drugs, including opioids, has been created. The tool will be available on the attorney general’s website at https:// pennsylvania.pmpaware.net, on the Department of Health’s website at www.health.pa.gov, and within the state’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) site for registered users at https://pennsylvania.pmp aware.net/. By making the attorney general’s suspicious activity reporting tool available on the PDMP and the Department of Health’s website, another layer of safety is added for the responsible prescribing of controlled substances such as opioids. The illegal diversion of prescription pain pills from doctors’ offices and pharmacies is contributing to the opioid epidemic across the commonwealth, but diversion activity is hard to identify and even harder to investigate. The new reporting tool, which is available online to everyone, allows people to anonymously give the attorney general’s office detailed information about suspected diversion so criminal activity can be better investigated and prosecuted. The attorney general’s Office of Diversion created the suspicious activity report form, a web-based form, for health care providers and the general public to report suspicious activity involving prescription
medication. Things that might be reported include fraudulent, stolen, or altered prescriptions; a suspicious doctor or pharmacy; or an individual obtaining prescription drugs for any purpose other than the treatment of an existing medical condition, such as for purposes of misuse, abuse, or diversion. Completed reports are assigned to the appropriate attorney general’s office investigator in the region where the suspicious activity is alleged to have taken place. Those with an active Pennsylvania professional license that permits them to prescribe or dispense medications must register to use the PDMP. Authorized users include prescribers, dispensers, the attorney general’s office (on behalf of law enforcement), designated commonwealth personnel, and medical examiners or county coroners. More than 90,000 registrants have conducted approximately 1.6 million patient searches each month. The PDMP online database allows prescribers and dispensers of controlled substances to monitor who is obtaining opioids, who prescriptions are being obtained from, and how often they are prescribed, and it also supports clinicians in identifying patients who may be struggling from the disease of addiction and help connect them with treatment services. For more information on the PDMP, readers may visit https://pennsylvania.pmpaware. net/.

Base Ball Club from pg 1 explained that vintage base ball is the perfect balance between (modern) competitive baseball and slow-pitch softball. “One cannot be overpowered by high-speed pitching, but it still maintains a competitive atmosphere,” he said. According to the rules of vintage base ball, players dress in historically similar attire and use period-appropriate equipment, including handmade wooden bats and hand-stitched balls made exclusively for vintage play. The ball is slightly bigger than a modern baseball and a little bit
softer. In addition, only one ball is used during the entire game. Unlike modern baseball, players do not wear gloves when playing in the field. “Fielding without having a mitt requires a greater emphasis on poise and discipline when fielding balls in play,” Marmelstein explained. “Even the most routine ground or fly ball isn’t a given when playing on a grass field and catching with your bare hands,” added Rajan. Kraeer said that some challenges associated with the vintage game are similar to the
modern game of baseball. “A lot of it is mental: realizing the different scenarios when you’re in the field, knowing what to do on the base paths and not beating yourself up over a strikeout or muffed play,” he stated. Despite the challenges, all of the team members agree that playing the sport is rewarding and does not require that participants be seasoned athletes. “I would most certainly recommend this sport to any baseball fan that is looking to get some healthy exercise and meet some awesome
people while re-creating America’s pastime,” said Kraeer. Marmelstein added, “I highly recommend it to others as it provides the balance of competitiveness of a club team with a more casual in-game, playing experience.” The Brandywine Base Ball Club of West Chester plays its home matches at East Goshen Park in West Chester, and games are free for spectators to attend. The team competes with other vintage clubs in the Mid-Atlantic Vintage Base Ball League.

For many smartphone users, their smartphones are never too far out of reach. This is a reflection of the role these devices now play in everyday life as well as the amount of sensitive information contained within them. The treasure trove of personal information, including banking details, personal emails, and private photos, that smartphones contain makes them tempting targets for skilled cyber criminals. Though phones come with built-in security features, savvy smartphone users recognize the importance of going beyond such features to protect their devices from hackers. First, update the operating system. It can be a nuisance to update a phone’s operating system (OS). In fact, many a smartphone user has bemoaned an OS update, feeling the updates changed the look and performance of apps they had grown accustomed to. However, updated operating systems are offered for various reasons, one of which is to guard against glitches or bugs in old operating systems that might have made phones more vulnerable to hackers. When prompted to update a smartphone’s operating system, do so right away. Also, avoid public WiFi. Hackers target victims in many ways, including through public WiFi hotspots. Smartphone users who don’t have unlimited data plans may be tempted to use public WiFi when out and about. But doing so makes users vulnerable to skilled hackers who are just waiting to access unknowing users’ personal information, including their financial data. When leaving the house, turn off the WiFi on the phone, only turning it back on when needed and only if the user can access a secure network. In addition, accept two-factor authentication. Two-factor authentication was designed so internet users would have another layer of protection against hackers. “If you are looking for some fun, friendly competition with a great group of men and women, come out for a game or two at East Goshen Park and see for yourself,” Rajan said. Postal Service Issues First Stamp Of 2019 The U.S. Postal Service is celebrating the joys of love with the latest stamp in the Love series, the Hearts Blossom Forever stamp. It is the first stamp of 2019. The stamp’s first-day-ofissue dedication ceremony took place at the Puerto Rico Museum of Contemporary Art. Among the attendees were Erica-Marie Sanchez, an actress on “The Inspectors,” and Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, author of the graphic novelist “La Borinqueña.” The Hearts Blossom stamp shows 12 colorful hearts in a palette - of red, purple, orange and pink - intended to create a happy and positive feeling. Art director Antonio Alcalá designed the stamp. News of the stamp is being shared on social media using the hashtag #LoveStamps. may be asked if he or she wants to enroll in two-factor authentication. This refers to the system in which users receive a temporary code via the messaging apps on their phones that only the users have access to. Some might say two-factor authentication is a nuisance, but receiving and typing in the short code will only take an extra few seconds and it is an extra measure of protection against hackers. Finally, when purchasing and downloading apps, only use
official app stores such as the Apple Store or Google Play. Some hackers access phones via apps they offer through websites that, on the surface, seem legitimate. However, such apps contain viruses and malware that make it easy for hackers to access phones once they have been installed. Creating A Fire Safety Plan Fires are unpredictable and can cause devastating loss of life and property. The U.S. Fire Administration states that, in 2017, there were 1,319,500 reported fires that resulted in 3,400 deaths and 14,670 injuries in the United States. Fire safety protocol gives people the ability to get out of a building promptly and safely in the event of a fire. People are advised to develop a comprehensive fire safety plan, which can help save lives when used in concert with functioning smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. However, the National Fire Protection Association says only about one-quarter of households actually have developed and practiced a fire escape plan or have taken measures to prevent fires around their homes. Malfunctioning kitchen appliances should be repaired or replaced promptly. Appliances should be kept clean and always according to manufacturers’ instructions. People should not leave a room while cooking. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says that most kitchen fires, which can ignite in as little as one minute, start after someone left the room. A fully charged and functioning fire extinguisher should be kept on the premises, preferably one on each floor of a home or business.
Power strips should not be overloaded with plugs. Homeowners should have a licensed electrician inspect and suggest updates to antiquated wiring systems. Children should be taught about the dangers of playing with fire. Matches and lighters should be kept away from children. All members of an office or household should be gathered together to come up with an effective evacuation plan. People should walk through the building and inspect all possible escape routes. Two ways out of each room should be identified. If a window exit is recommended, a functioning ladder that can provide safe egress should be available. An evacuation plan should include an outside meeting place that is far away from the residence or building, but close enough that it can be easily reached by all. A buddy system should be set up so that certain members of the family or company will be responsible for helping elderly, young, or disabled people exit the premises. Individuals should practice identifying escape routes and institute regular evacuation plans so that everyone can function quickly should a fire occur. Fires can spread quickly and easily claim lives. By addressing fire risks and implementing safety plans, people can save lives.
Hot Cocoa Cookie Recipe Restaurant reservations, red roses and sparkling jewelery all are par for the course on Valentine’s Day. However, nothing may epitomize the holiday more than a decadent chocolate treat. When heart-shaped chocolate boxes are not enough, resourceful gifters can turn to homemade desserts to really capture the spirit of Valentine’s Day. This recipe for hot cocoa cookies marries the decadent taste of chocolate with the notion of a warm and soothing hot cocoa that’s ideal for a chilly February day. Even though the premium cocoa mix is baked right into the recipe, don’t hesitate to enjoy a steaming mug of cocoa on the side as the perfect complement to this rich and tasty cookie. Hot Cocoa Cookies Yield: 5 1/2 dozen cookies Cookies: 8 tablespoons (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, at cool room temperature, 65 F to 68 F 1/2 cup hot chocolate mix 1/3 cup light brown sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon espresso powder, optional, for enhanced flavor 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 11/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 11/2 cups mini chocolate chips 1/2 cup cocoa nibs, optional Topping: About 5 1/2 dozen bittersweet disks, or other high-quality chocolate wafer
Marshmallow fluff, cocoa nibs or chopped nuts, for garnish
HATT’S HARDWARE $ 00
Preheat the oven to 375 F. Lightly grease two baking sheets, or line with parchment. To make the cookies: Combine the butter, hot chocolate mix, brown sugar, baking powder, salt and espresso powder in a mixing bowl. Beat until the mixture is smooth. Add the egg and vanilla, and beat until thoroughly combined. Weigh out the flour, or measure it by gently spooning it into a cup, then sweeping off any excess. Add the flour to the cookie mixture, stirring to combine. Mix in the chips and cocoa nibs. Drop the dough by teaspoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheets - a teaspoon cookie scoop works well here. Space the cookies at least two inches apart. Bake the cookies for 8 to 9 minutes, until the surface is set, but the cookies aren’t quite fully baked. Take the cookies out of the oven and press a chocolate disk into the center of each cookie. Return the cookies to the oven for 1 to 2 minutes longer, until the chocolate begins to turn shiny and softens. Remove the cookies from the oven once again, and sprinkle the melted chocolate disk with your garnish of choice. Allow the cookies to cool right on the baking sheet until the chocolate disks are set. Store well-wrapped cookies at room temperature for a week or so; freeze for longer storage.

More than 5,000 FFA members and guests attended the state FFA’s Mid-Winter Convention during the recent Pennsylvania Farm Show. At the recent 103rd Pennsylvania Farm Show, held from Jan. 5 to 12, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding and Education Secretary Pedro Rivera celebrated agricultural education during the state FFA’s Mid-Winter Convention with more than 5,000 FFA members and guests. Pennsylvania’s more than 150 high school agriculture education programs aim to prepare students for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers and beyond. The Mid-Winter Convention recognized the academic, leadership and field-based experiences of 409 recipients of the Keystone Degree, the highest honor earned at the state level. In addition, the Pennsylvania FFA Alumni Association awarded more than 364 first-year members their own official FFA jacket after they completed a competitive application process. Last year marked the creation of the Commission on Agriculture Education Excel-
lence. The 15-member commission complements Gov. Tom Wolf’s PAsmart initiative, an investment in STEM and computer science education and hands-on technical education programs. PAsmart will invest $20 million in new funding for computer science and STEM education, as well as an additional $10 million investment in apprenticeships and job training programs for in-demand careers. As part of a workforce development plan outlined in a report issued in 2018, the departments are working to identify gaps in education and training for those in-demand career paths; focus on workbased learning, including microcredentials and apprenticeships; and help Pennsylvanians obtain meaningful careers. The Pennsylvania FFA Association aims to help students develop their potential for leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
