Evan Beebe, a member of Downingtown Troop 8, installed a Little Free Library in Livingood Park in Elverson, along with a reading bench, as his Eagle Scout service project. One of the first books he placed in the box was a Bible. Other books were donated by the community. “It’s community-driven,” he stated. “The Plexiglas window was broken (recently), and someone put a trash bag over it until I had a chance to fix it.” Evan was presented with the Eagle Scout Award during his Court of Honor celebration held last November at Brick Lane Community Church in Elverson, where he is an active member in the church youth group. In addition to completing the project, Evan performed community service and demonstrated leadership as the chaplain’s aide for his troop. He also earned more than 21 merit

In order to earn the Eagle Scout Award, which is the highest rank in Boy Scouting, Scouts must first complete a service project that will benefit the community. For his project, Evan Beebe, a member of Downingtown Troop 8, installed a Little Free Library in Livingood Park on South Chestnut Street in Elverson, where area residents are invited to take a book or leave a book. He also added a bench so that people could enjoy reading their books in the park. Evan, a senior at Conestoga Christian School in Morgantown, said he got the idea to create a community book exchange after learning there was an interest in the program. “I had seen (Little Free Libraries), so I knew what they were, but the way I got the idea was someone on Facebook suggested one for the Elverson area,” he said. “I was looking for (this type of) project because I wanted it to be local.” As a first step, Evan had to receive approval for the project from members of Elverson Borough Council, as well as Scoutmaster Dave Mengel and the Chester County Boy Scout Council. “I made a proposal saying I wanted to put a library at this place in the park and that I wanted to add a bench,” Evan explained. Evan presented his
proposal at a Borough Council meeting in the spring of 2019. His proposal was also featured in the May/June 2019 Elverson Borough newsletter. After receiving the go-ahead, Evan had to raise funds to complete the project. He established a GoFundMe page, which raised a small portion of the funds needed. “I did a GoFundMe, but it wasn’t enough, so I did a donation-based car wash for a day,” said Evan. “A couple of friends from my church youth group and Scouts helped with that.” Evan also made a presentation and asked for donations during Elverson Day in the Park held in June. “I put (the box and bench) in on July 17, 2019,” Evan noted. “It was a one-day project. We dug a hole in the ground under the frost level. We put the pole in and added concrete on top. Then, we assembled the bench beside it. It took six or seven hours.” Evan purchased the Little Free Library online. “The fundraising gave me a better budget so I could buy a better-quality box from an online company that offered them prebuilt,” he noted. “I put a waterproof paint/lacquer mix on it, so it won’t get moldy. It also has a metal top (to protect it from the weather).” Evan said that the community has already embraced the Little Free Library. After asking for book donations on Facebook, Evan found the library filled with books for both children and adults the next day in addition to the Bible he placed in the box.

School; Cameo Powell, Oxford Area High School; and David Akins, Unionville High School. Beverly Lawler, chairperson of the Good Citizens Committee, explained that the honor is presented annually to students who demonstrate the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. The students are chosen for the honor by their respective high schools. “In August, I contacted area high schools requesting their assistance in selecting one senior from their school who demonstrates the traits of a good citizen,” she stated. “Today, we are honoring 11 students because of their commitments to their schools and their communities. These students will become the leaders of our future.” Lawler provided a brief history of the Good Citizens Award, which was established in 1934 and originally bestowed upon only one student per state. By 1952, the award was expanded so that each high school could select one Good Citizen honoree. Lawler explained that Good Citizens have the option to apply for a scholarship at the state DAR level. Part of the application is completing an essay. “Students are given a topic, and they have two hours to write an essay. They do not research the essay; they write from their own knowledge and experiences,” said Lawler. “I selected two non-DAR community members to judge those applications.” For this year’s essay, students had to respond to the question, “You and your peers are our nation’s leaders of tomorrow. How would you energize America’s youth to fully engage as effective citizens, and why is that important?” “Kira was selected as this chapter’s representative for the state competition, and we congratulate her,” Lawler said. Each Good Citizen was presented with a certificate and a lapel pin. Toni Keg from Sen. Andy Dinniman’s office also presented the students with certificates of recognition. Lawler recognized family members of the students, as well as high school principals and staff members who attended the event. Attendees then enjoyed lunch and refreshments prepared by the DAR hostess committee. Guests were greeted by DAR regent Dawn Coughlan. The Chester County DAR, which celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2019, is open to women age 18 and up who are able to provide proof of their ancestral connection to those who served in the American Revolution. According to Kauffman, children who wish to take part need not have any experience with hockey. “(The program is) open to anyone who wants to learn the game, he said, noting that those wishing to play field hockey later on will find there are similarities in handling the stick. “It will require some of the same motor skills, he noted. Pequea Baptist’s interest in teaching sports to children began in 2010 when the church began running an Upward Basketball program. CAYPP, which is supported by Citadel Bank, is seeking organizations that engage community members in a sustainable manner, produce measurable outputs and outcomes, and collaborate well with other local agencies, such as the Coatesville Area School District. The greater Coatesville community is defined as the nine municipalities in the Coatesville Area School District: the city of Coatesville; the townships of Caln, East Fallowfield, Sadsbury, Valley, West Brandywine, and West Caln; and the boroughs of Modena and South Coatesville. The grant application is available at https://brandywine foundation.org/current-prior ities/coatesville-are-youth -philanthropy-program/grant -application/. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 20, at 4 p.m. Applications received after the deadline will not be

One will aim to help area youths live healthier lives and the other will recognize an outstanding member of the community for his or her dedicated service to the greater Coatesville area. In alignment with the Brandywine Health Foundation’s focus on the social determinants of health, grant proposals are being solicited from organizations in the greater Coatesville area to address either of two funding priorities. Proposals can focus on ways to improve health outcomes for youths or on projects that will address food insecurity in the community. This outreach is in conjunction with the foundation’s Coatesville Area Youth Philanthropy Program (CAYPP), currently in its fifth year of service to the community. State Sen. Andy Dinniman announced recently that the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) approved more than $36,000 in grants for four historical and cultural organizations in Chester County. The PHMC grants are as follows: $17,441 for the Chester County Historical Society, $4,000 for Historic Sugartown, $9,720 for Historic Yellow Springs and $4,490 for the Wharton Esherick Museum. The funding comes through the PHMC Cultural and Historical Support Grant Program, which provides support for resources and operating expenses to museum and historical organizations according to a formula based on their size and operating budgets. The Chester County Historical Society also received a $6,692 Historical & Archival Records Care (HARC) grant for the processing and rehousing of the Schramm Inc. photograph collection. The grant project will focus on the housing, arrangement and description of photographs from Schramm Inc. through its history - from making parts for the World War II U.S. Army Signal Corps to working on a variety of mining and construction equipment. Schramm Inc. was founded in 1900 with an original focus on the manufacturing of enginedriven machinery and portable air compressors. In 2010, it supplied equipment that was used in the rescue of 33 Chilean miners, which Schramm Inc. calls its highest accomplishment. The rescue mission took almost 70 days, and Schramm’s equipment played an important role in saving the miners. In November 2019, Schramm Inc. was sold, following a June filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

One of the first books he placed in the box was a Bible.
