Book Depository Installed At Local Park Church Sets “Loving Our Earth Expo”
By Francine Fulton
Book lovers of all ages are invited to “take a book and bring a book” at the new book depository that was recently installed at Layton Park in Wagontown. The book depository, which features separate shelves for books for children and adults, was built by Barbara Goodman, an administrative assistant at West Caln Township. The unit was installed by township workers at Pavilion 1 in the park. Goodman said she has seen similar book exchanges in the area and thought building a box would be a good way to share her own books, as well as children’s books. “I contacted the Parks and Rec Committee and asked if it was OK to do,” See Book Depository pg 10

West Caln Township administrative assistant Barbara Goodman (left) constructed a book depository in Layton Park where area residents can take or donate a book. Those who recently chose books to take home were (continuing from left) Pierce, Julie and Sawyer Neilson.
Seeking A Home For Albert Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue Inc., which has found homes for more than 100 dogs and close to 60 cats since its formation in January 2018, is currently seeking a home for a special needs dog named Albert, who uses a doggie wheelchair. Albert is currently being fostered by organization founder Mary Bauer, with help from volunteers. “He has such a zest for life. He plays and runs around in his wheelchair with our other dogs like he is part of the pack,” Bauer said. “He is adorable.” According to Albert’s biography, he was found in December 2018 on the doorstep of a veterinarian’s office in See Albert pg 3

Lincoln Highway (Business Route 30), Exton. The event will take place rain or shine. Admission and parking will be free. While registration is preferred, it is not required. The show is designed to be a familyfriendly event. In addition to the vehicles on display, there will be face painting for children, and local favorite DJ Bert will provide music from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. “(A local car dealer) will set up, and there will be carrelated vendors,” Buddenhagen said. “There are no parking or spectator fees, and there is no charge for face painting,” Buddenhagen pointed out. There will also be opportunities for spectators and participants to win door prizes from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The merchants of the center will offer food for sale and provide free samples. Food items will include hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecue, pizza, pasta, pulled pork, Chinese food and beverages. Cruisin’ Classics of Chester County is a social club whose members have a common interest in classic cars. It is also a community service organization that supports charities in Chester and Lancaster counties. “Cruisin’ Classics of Chester County was established in 1985 and has been supporting the community for more than 30 years,” Buddenhagen said. “We have two shows a year. The annual club show is the first Saturday in May, and the Support the Troops show is on the fourth Saturday in September.” The annual show in Caln supports local charities, including local fire departments. “We help other groups like Bridge of Hope (Lancaster and Chester Counties) and the women’s shelter in Coatesville (through this show),” Buddenhagen noted. The entire proceeds from the Support the Troops show are donated to the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Cruisin’ Classics meets at Alert Fire Company, 122 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Downingtown, on the second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. Anyone interested in cars is welcome. Currently, the club has approximately 70 members from all areas of the county, including Downingtown, Thorndale, Coatesville, Exton, Kennett Square, West Chester and Westtown. Unfortunately, since it is not a recent fracture, surgical intervention is not an option. Albert is not in pain, and he is expected to grow and flourish as any other dog. Albert is now about 5 months old and weighs 35 pounds. “We think, but we don’t know for sure, that he is a Lab/hound mix,” Bauer noted. Those interested in adopting Albert may email luckydawgar@gmail.com or fill out an application at www.luckydawganimal rescue.com. “We want to make sure he goes to the appropriate adopter who wants to care for his special needs,” Bauer said. Georgia with no note or explanation. A shelter in Georgia took the puppy in, but it later reached out for help and Lucky Dawg decided to have him transported to Pennsylvania. “We said, ‘Let’s get this dog up here,’” said Bauer. “He needed the right rescue and the right setting for him to thrive.” She noted that Albert’s wheelchair, also known as a wheelie cart, was donated by Rescue Rollers in Ohio. Albert was examined by the rescue vet and by a neurologist. Through diagnostic testing they were able to determine that Albert suffered at least one lumbar spinal fracture, most likely from trauma. This has caused paralysis from mid-back down.

LAPS from pg 1 By Francine Fulton
The Large Animal Protection Society (LAPS) will hold an open house to celebrate 30 years of service to the community on Saturday, May 4. The event, which will also include a tack sale, will be held at its facility, 29 Keller Road, Cochranville, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. According to Pat Geiger, LAPS president, this is the first time that the all-volunteer rescue group has held an open house. “We want to let the community know about what we do,” she stated. Activities during the open house will include demonstrations and a chance to win equine-related gift baskets. There will be a dental demonstration by Katelyn Duncan of Duncan Equine Dental Services and a presentation by Dean Stoltzfus, Stoltzfus Feed & Supply’s equine nutrition expert. Representatives from Lasata Farm, a nonprofit organization that provides therapeutic riding and horsemanship lessons to those with disabilities, will also provide a demonstration. “They adopted three of our (miniature horses) that they use for children,” Geiger noted.
Natural horsemanship trainer Sam Smucker will provide a behavioral horse training session. A fee will be charged, and preregistration is required. Sessions will include Under Saddle, Trailering and Young Horse Issues. To register, readers may call 610-864-6374 or email Lapspa@hotmail.com. Beverages and snacks, including soft pretzels and homemade baked goods, will be available throughout the day for a suggested donation. Those who would like to reserve a spot in the tack sale may contact LAPS at Lapspa@hotmail.com or 215-803-7704. LAPS, a nonprofit organization, enforces cruelty laws in Pennsylvania to protect large animals from abuse, neglect or cruelty through education, abuse investigation and adoptions. Geiger, LAPS board members and humane agents are all volunteers. During the open house, visitors will be able to meet animals that have been rescued and are available for adoption, including a Thoroughbred horse, a pony and a miniature horse. “This is where the animals are brought and prepared for adoption,” Geiger

Stella, the dog of a Large Animal Protection Society (LAPS) board member, checks out the sheep that were rescued by LAPS and later adopted. LAPS will hold an open house and 30th anniversary celebration at its site in Cochranville on May 4. explained. “If (the new owners) move or can’t afford to keep it, the animal comes back. It’s a lifetime commitment.” LAPS rescues farm animals, including horses, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, donkeys, mules and burros. “LAPS was incorporated in 1988. The local SPCA at the time could not rescue large animals and there was no one to call if someone saw a horse being abused and that’s how we got started,” Geiger said. “What makes us unique is that we have no paid staff and we do not pay our humane agents.” According to www.largeanimal protectionsociety.org, the humane agency has state authority to investigate cruelty complaints and prosecute offenders in order to enforce Pennsylvania’s animal cruelty laws in Chester, Delaware, and Lancaster counties. When a complaint is issued and verified, LAPS humane officers will investigate. “We (first) try to educate the animal owner and give them time to remedy the situation, unless it is a severe case,” Geiger explained. If necessary, LAPS will remove the animal and prosecute the owner. “We rehabilitate (the animals) and find homes for them,” she said. “We use New Bolton Center and local vets and we have caretakers that live at the farm.” She said that the organization recently rescued New Zealand Arapawa goats, which is an endangered species of goats. Some of the animals have already been adopted.

tote bag. Registration for the expo is available at www.eventbrite.com. St. Paul’s is the site of a community garden, where a plant sale and open house have been held annually in the spring. Last year, other activities were incorporated into the event for the first time in addition to the regular sale of plants and herbs. “We ended up with 250 to 300 people (in attendance),” noted garden manager Steve Choc. “We didn’t know what to expect, and we planned big. This year, we have a more intimate layout and we are focusing on connecting people together and sharing ideas, as well as offering an opportunity for people to connect with vendors and (gather) information. We’re doing a more formal schedule as well.” The day’s schedule will include a talk by Kathy Herring, a representative from C-Change Conversations, at 10:30 a.m. “C-Change is a climate change information group that gives science-based, nonpartisan information to the public about the impacts of climate change,” Choc explained. Mike McGrath, who hosts the radio show “You Bet Your Garden,” will return to the event and speak at noon. At 1:30 p.m., Richard Whiteford, a climate change adviser, will present “Leave Carbon in the Ground or Humans Won’t Be Around!” Dr. Christine McCormick will present “Nature in Your Backyard” at 2:30 p.m. “She is a local retired professor who will inform us about how our backyards can be wildlife friendly,” Choc stated. All lectures will take place in the church’s Getman Hall. The day will conclude with a “Gardeners’ Wisdom Circle.” “It will be a meetand-greet to get people together who are passionate about nature, gardens and the

environment,” said Choc. “It will be at the end of the event around 3 p.m.” Also featured during the day will be a vendor tent. Organizations scheduled to participate include the Chester County Food Bank and the Beekeepers of Chester County. There will also be booths by environmental educators, local farms, energy suppliers and crafters. Snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase. A yoga and Qigong class will be offered at 9 a.m. “Qigong is an Asian form of martial arts. It is similar to standing meditation like tai chi,” Choc explained. The community garden was established at St. Paul’s in the spring of 2010. “We donate over a 1,000 pounds of food a year, primarily to the Chester County Food Bank,” Choc reported, noting that additional food is given to the West Chester Food Cupboard, the Salvation Army of Coatesville and other organizations. “We also grow herbs in bulk and take them to the Broad Street Mission in Philadelphia,” Choc added. “They use bushels of herbs at a time; it is a way to share our bounty.” He noted that garden beds are currently available to rent for community members who want to grow their own produce. Tours of the garden will be offered during the expo, and visitors will also be able to view the garden’s beehives and compost site. The expo is being sponsored by the Bradshaw-Knight Foundation, which presents grants to organizations that focus on land conservation, land stewardship, organic agriculture and more. people a day; now we average about 95 to 120 people a day,” Pierce noted. “Judging by attendance, I think (everyone knows) we’re here.” Seniors are asked to pay a yearly fee to join the CASC. However, membership is not required to enjoy programming, breakfast and lunch. Meal reservations are required by contacting the senior center five days in advance at 610-383-6900. The CASC serves the communities of Coatesville, Atglen, Elverson, Honey Brook Borough and Township, Modena,
Parkesburg, South Coatesville and Thorndale, as well as Wallace, Caln, West Caln, East Fallowfield and Valley townships. “CASC serves 14 municipalities around the city of Coatesville and is open to (people) age 50 and better,” said Pierce. Pierce pointed out that many members use Rover Transportation to travel to the center, while about 10 percent of members are within walking distance. Regularly scheduled CASC programs include a craft club, a chess club, a culinary club and a knitting/crocheting club
Ramon, who notes that he has a great of respect for older adults, said his goal is to have folks enjoy their time at the center every time they visit. “I value their experience. They are our connections to the past,” he stated. “We can learn from them. We should honor and value them, and we do that daily.” For more information about the CASC, readers may contact Ramon at 610-3836900 or george.ramon@coatesvillesenior center.org or visit www.coatesvillesenior center.org. called Knit Knots. Exercise programs are also offered, including Zumba, yoga and line dancing. Pierce said that in addition to recreational activities, senior centers have a responsibility to older adults to offer educational and informative programs as well. For example, as part of CASC’s Lunch and Learn program, a talk will be offered about older adults raising their own grandchildren on Friday, May 31, at 11 a.m. “The senior center has a place in the larger community conversation about things that are going on around us that affect the aging population,” he said. “We want to set the stage by having experts (available) in the field of aging.”
The Coatesville Area Senior Center is located in the former CareerLink building at 250 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (formerly Harmony Street), Coatesville.
“Salamander Saturday” Slated Salamander Saturday, which will include an informational presentation and a nature walk, will be held at Green Valleys Watershed Association (GVWA) at Welkinweir on Saturday, May 4, from 9 to 11 a.m. The workshop will be led by Patrick Gardner, Chester County coordinator for the Pennsylvania Amphibian and Reptile Survey (PARS) and a staff member at Natural Lands Trust. Attendees will learn the basics of salamander identification and how to support the animals on their own properties. Salamanders are similar in appearance to lizards, but salamanders are amphibians, while lizards are reptiles. After the talk, participants will practice their identification skills on a walk around Welkinweir’s 219-acre property, which includes forests, ponds, wetlands, a stream and a vernal (seasonal) pool, to search for salamanders and other creatures that call Welkinweir home. The observations will be recorded as part of a citizen science initiative. No salamander identification experience is necessary. The program is for 6-year-olds to adults; attendees should dress for the season and wear sturdy shoes. The program will run rain or shine unless severe

Fifth St. in Coatesville for more than 20 years. Spearheading the new programming is George Ramon, the program and activities director and assistant executive director, who began working at the center in December of 2018. His visible presence and interaction
with the seniors have helped make CASC a popular place for seniors to spend time. “You can come in, eat, hang, grab a cup of coffee and make a friend,” said Ramon. “What’s nice is that people have direct access to me, so if they are interested in doing (a program), we will put it on the schedule.” Pierce said that Ramon’s enthusiasm and the wide selection of programming have made the senior center grow and thrive since its relocation. “Not long after we moved in here, we averaged 15 to 20

The Moc Rocks Women’s Golf League is designed for women who want to have fun playing golf, no matter what their skill level. “It’s a nine-hole women’s golf league for women who want to improve their game,” organizer Maureen Bitner said. “If you’re planning for the LPGA, this league is not for you.” This is the eighth year for the league, which is open to women age 18 and over. Last year, the ages of participants ranged from 18 to 70s. The league is also open to a full range of skill levels. “We’ve had women (join the league) who have never picked up a golf club in their life,” Bitner said, adding that more experienced female golfers may also want to join to enjoy the chance to play with other women in a friendly environment. The group will meet each Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. from May 21 through Aug. 27 at Moccasin Run Golf Club, 402 Schoff Road, Atglen. Advance registration is suggested, but not required. League members will tee off as they arrive and have the exclusive use of the front nine holes on the course. Some will arrange to play in a group with friends, while others join in with whomever is waiting to play. “That is part of why I like the league so much. You meet such a
variety of people,” said league member Stephanie Eldreth. One feature that appeals to some members is the fact that the league is for women only. “At the course, there are no men on the front nine when we’re playing. The lack of men just makes it ... a little bit more relaxed because they tend to drive the ball farther. We make it womenfriendly,” Bitner said. “Some of the better players choose to go off to the back nine, which is more challenging. They certainly can do that, too.” Golf instruction is available for those who need help mastering the basics or for golfers who want to improve their game. The league also has occasional mini clinics with a pro, as well as games and challenges to make the round of golf more interesting. “We mix it up and have fun,” Bitner said. “Scorekeeping is optional, though this year we’re going to try to teach the girls a little about keeping score and getting a handicap if they’re interested.” There is a registration fee for the league, which covers the cost of the end-of-season banquet, prizes and other expenses. Weekly “Did You Know?” emails are sent to members, with information on golf rules, etiquette and facts. Everyone must bring their own equipment. Golfers also pay their green fees and cart rental fees each time they play. For those who are not sure they
