Representing Chester County In Eye Drop 2022 BY FRANCINE FULTON
Even if it’s not, I will tell myself it will be easier (this time).”
Despite her fear of heights, Natanya Sortland will once again represent Chester County in Eye Drop 2022, a fundraising event held annually by VisionCorps, a nonprofit organization that provides services to the blind and visually impaired. During the event, participants are asked to rappel 120 feet from the roof of the Holiday Inn in Lancaster down 10 stories to the ground.
Eye Drop 2022, VisionCorps’ signature fundraiser, is set for Friday, June 10, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Lancaster, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster. Participants must commit to raising at least $1,000 each to support VisionCorps. This year’s goal is to raise $175,000.
Sortland said performing the feat is part of her personal effort to raise funds for VisionCorps and to make people in the county aware of how she personally benefited from the services that the organization provides, including training individuals on how to use a cane to navigate obstacles both at home and in the community. Natanya Sortland rappels down a building during Eye Drop 2021. “I went through the whole experience (of rap- independent life with courage and with that operated on a pulley system. “They pelling) and when I got pride.” cinch you up and put all the gear on. down, I realized it wasn’t Sortland’s vision was damaged after Right before, there is a room you are in as bad as the year I spent she suffered a subarachnoid hemor- and that’s where you get to practice indesperately trying to find rhage. This is the third year for Eye Drop, and this year, a new attraction will be an expo. It will include information about services provided by the agency, tips and demonstrations of equipment for those with impaired vision and information about ways to promote healthy eyesight. Also scheduled are technology demonstrations and talks by medical professionals, who will discuss healthy diets and how diet impacts eye conditions. Many people are drawn to motorcycles because of the intensity and excitement riding provides. What motorcycles add in terms of speed and excitement, they may lose in safety, especially when compared to cars and trucks. However, the risks associated with riding motorcycles can be reduced with some simple safety precautions.
on the open road.
Motorcycle riders can improve the barrier between themselves and the road with the proper gear. Quality leather jackets and pants, helmets, gloves, and nonskid boots can protect the body from severe injuries.
Riders should also remove distractions while on a motorcycle. Cell phones should be stowed away so one’s attention is not drawn away from the road.
Reflective tape added to clothing can help motorcyclists become more visible to other drivers. Otherwise, wearing bright-colored clothing and riding with others as a group increases visibility.
June 23. PA CareerLink PA CareerLink will be at the Coatesville Library at 3 p.m. to offer staff assist job searches, youth employment opportunities and personalized career counseling. Registration is not required. June 25. Live Reptile Show Coatesville Public Library, 10:30 a.m. Presented by the Forgotten Friends Reptile Sanctuary. Register at https://ccls.libcal. com/event/8994537
Motorcyclists need to be very careful about road obstacles such as uneven road surfaces, fallen branches, oil slicks, and wet spots. According to ConsumerSafety. org, a motorcycle has less contact with the road than a car, making it more likely to skid out of control or throw a rider.
By following the aforementioned suggestions, motorcyRiders should remain so- clists may stay safe on the ber and alert and never ride road.

Riding in the rain or in other difficult conditions is riskier since the roads are slippery. Riders should slow down or keep their bike at home in inclement weather.
Motorcycle riders are advised to not take an unfamiliar bike into busy traffic. If the bike has never been ridden before, the rider should become familiar with its handling and responsiveness in a controlled area that is not full of traffic before taking it

musings
A Few Of My (Un)Favorite Things BY FRANCINE FULTON Shoppers who don’t return their carts to the corral, crooked paintings, whistlers and people who litter are just some of the things that bug me, also knowns as pet peeves. The Cambridge Dictionary describes a pet peeve as “something that especially annoys you.” One researcher suggests that since peeve means “to annoy or irritate” and the word pet is used to designate a favorite, a pet peeve is a person’s favorite annoyance. Many pet peeves have to do with the spoken and written word. For example,
when people say, “I could care less,” they clearly mean “I couldn’t care less.” There is also the improper use of the apostrophe. “Thank God its Friday should be “Thank God it’s Friday,” and “Merry Christmas from the Smith’s” should be “Merry Christmas from the Smiths.” Drivers have their own set of pet peeves, like people who follow too closely, drive below the speed limit or don’t use their turn signals. Then there are the everyday pet peeves like people who talk during a movie, chew their gum loudly, don’t cover their mouth when they cough or sneeze or put their phones on speaker, forcing everyone to hear their personal conversations. Dining out has its own set of pet peeves, like people at a buffet who cannot wait to get back to their table and start eating from their plate as they walk. If you eat out, take a look around
WINDSOR BAPTIST CHURCH: 213 Little Conestoga Rd. in the village of Eagle/Chester Springs. Pastor: Ben OʼToole (610-458-5177) In-person or livestream. Sunday School all ages 9AM; Sunday Worship 10AM; Sunday Eve.: Youth Group for Teens, & Childrenʼs Group at 6PM; Wed. Eve. Prayer at 7PM. www.windsor-baptist.org
and you may see many diners on their phones and not even engaging in conversation. Home is also a breeding ground for annoyance: the empty toilet paper roll, the water or soda bottle in the fridge that has maybe one teaspoon left in it, overflowing trash cans, clothes that don’t quite make it into the laundry hamper, shirts in the wash that are turned inside out, the lid left off the toothpaste in the bathroom or the lid left off anything in the refrigerator, which is the one thing that always comes tumbling out when the door is open. Grocery stores are where people go through the express line with an overflowing grocery cart and block the aisles as they talk to friends whom they seemingly have not seen for years. While on speakerphone, husbands ask their wives what ingredients to buy and then read the labels out loud until they can decide
on the right choice. Then there are the people who pay with cash and search frantically in their pockets or their purses looking for the exact change. Modern technology has brought in a whole new list of pet peeves, such as people who use too many emojis in their texts or too many cute abbreviations. And what about those group chats, with no way to escape? Yes, there is quite a list of pet peeves, but interestingly what bothers one person does not necessarily bother another. It’s what makes us unique. And after that initial cringe, we can move past the annoyance and concentrate on the positive. We can put that shopping cart back as a favor to our fellow shoppers, we can straighten the crooked picture, we can try and enjoy the whistling and we can pick up that litter ... as long as we don’t talk about it while on speakerphone.
