Time To Plant “Victory Over Virus” Gardens By Francine Fulton

During World Wars I and II, Americans were urged to plant “victory gardens” as the nation faced potential food shortages. At the time, fresh vegetables were grown in people’s yards and at public parks, churches and schools. Today, a new movement to create “coronavirus victory gardens” has begun locally and nationwide. Since nurseries and garden centers have been designated as essential businesses in most places, gardeners are able to purchase necessary supplies, including soil and starter plants. Locally, the Penn State Chester County Master Gardeners are promoting “victory over virus” gardens, a term used by Master Gardener Tony Buck. Local residents are

encouraged to plant vegetables for themselves and to share the harvest with neighbors. “Victory gardens were promoted by the government during World Wars I and II to increase people’s self-reliance in growing food at home,” said Meagan Hopkins-Doerr, Master Gardener coordinator. “Harkening back to that, it is about self-reliance, particularly as we go to the store and see empty shelves.” She explained that even those without large backyards can create gardens in containers. “Many plants lend themselves nicely to growing in containers, including lettuces, eggplants and tomatoes,” Hopkins-Doerr said. “It is crucial that any container have good drainage, so you need to make sure there are drainage holes. There are also some plants that are specifically marketed as container varieties as they stay smaller

and have other features that lend themselves to tighter spaces. An example is the compact eggplant.” She said that people can use locally purchased vegetables to plant, while some gardeners prefer planting from seed. “The cheaper option is to start from seeds,” she stated. “But before buying seeds, make sure you have enough time to germinate, transplant if starting indoors and harvest during their optimal growing environment.” Hopkins-Doerr notes that planting a garden in the ground rather than in a container requires some preparation. “The land will need to be prepared first. That means removing any existing plants, likely tilling the soil to break it up and adding compost to enhance the soil structure and fertility,” she advised. “It is best to do a soil test so you know your soil’s pH and if you should add any fertilizers. You can also build or

HIGH 5 Soccer Goes Virtual When the Glenmoore Eagle Youth Association (GEYA) canceled the spring session of the HIGH 5 Soccer program for special needs players due to the COVID-19 pandemic, coaches Matt and Jenn Wagner were determined to find a way to engage the players on a

weekly basis. During the time that HIGH 5 Soccer would ordinarily take place at GEYA’s Fellowship Field in Chester Springs, players instead took part in online soccer sessions via Zoom. The program was on Saturdays at 3 p.m. from April 11 through May 30. During the virtual program, which See HIGH 5 pg 3

The Downingtown Train Station box is located on the westbound or Lancaster Avenue/Route 30 side of the station, which is accessible from the parking lot. Another box is located in Dawkins Park in Caln Township, located next to the Coatesville Area High School campus, on Pennsylvania Avenue between North Caln Road and Veterans Drive near the park pavilion. The Abdala Park box is located between Ninth and 10th avenues in Coatesville on the south side of Business Route 30 next to Walgreens. The Ash Park box is located between Third and Fourth avenues between Kersey and Walnut streets in Coatesville. Three additional box locations are in the works for See It Takes A Village pg 6

RE-OPENING FRI., JUNE 5 @ 11 AM

HIGH 5 from pg 1 lasted between 15 and 20 minutes, soccer players took part in modified versions of their favorite soccer games, while wearing their HIGH 5 T-shirts. “We missed seeing our HIGH 5 players and buddies and getting out into the sunshine to play soccer. We thought, ‘How can we have HIGH 5 when we’re not even supposed to leave the house?’” said Jenn, explaining how the idea of virtual HIGH 5 Soccer came about. “Matt came up with all of the games.” As part of the HIGH 5 Soccer program, players (in red T-shirts), who range in age from 5 to 18, are paired with volunteer buddies (in blue T-shirts), who are predominantly local high school and middle school students. During the traditional HIGH 5 sessions, players and buddies do not actually play a full game of soccer. Rather, they take

part in a series of soccer-related games, such as maneuvering a soccer ball through a series of cones and playing “Red Light, Green Light,” during which they stop and go while kicking a soccer ball across the playing field. For the virtual sessions, players ran in place for “Red Light, Green Light,” stopped when Matt displayed a red flag and danced when a yellow flag was displayed. HIGH 5 also includes “Buddy Bowling,” where the buddies act as human bowling pins that the players knock down with a giant soccer ball. For the virtual sessions, each player was called upon to “kick” and Matt and the assistant coaches fell down while on Zoom in their respective living rooms. Another favorite game, “Sharks and Minnows,” was also modified for the virtual sessions as players pretended to “swim”

and get “eaten” by sharks. Traditionally, each weekly soccer session culminates in a HIGH 5 tunnel in which the buddies form a tunnel and high-five the players as they run through. For the virtual program, players were unmuted at the end of the session and were able to offer greetings and the traditional high-five to other players and assistant coaches via Zoom. Jenn said the goal of the virtual program was “to connect to our players and share a little HIGH 5 spirit,” noting that the sessions were recorded and can be accessed anytime. “It was so much fun watching the kids play along,” she stated. Matt and Jenn are hopeful that the fall session of HIGH 5 will take place as scheduled. For more information about the HIGH 5 program or to obtain a link to the virtual sessions,

Another idea is to create egg carton insects using pipe cleaners for antennae. “Eyes can be drawn on, or (attach) googly eyes if you have them,” White said. To make a camouflage seed snake, youngsters will need sunflower seeds or small dried beans, along with glue. White said children can obtain coloring sheets of snakes or other reptiles from the internet, print them and glue on the seeds or beads for scales. “Most snakes around here are the colors of leaves or grass or dirt so they can blend in,” White noted, explaining why she suggests using seeds or beans. Another suggestion is making paper roll binoculars. “If you don’t have real binoculars, grab some toilet paper or paper towel rolls and pretend by having your child create their own,” White stated. “If you Google how to make them, you will find a variety of examples.” She also suggests making a bug hotel for insects that pollinate flowers and vegetables. COMMUNITYCOURIER - Downingtown/Exton Edition -

Hundreds of students, parents and residents showed their school spirit recently through Operation Decorate Downingtown. The initiative, created by Downingtown Area School District (DASD) athletic director Corey Sigle and assistant athletic directors Michelle Goss and Renee Harty, asked residents to decorate their home, doorstep or yard with DASD colors and athletics gear as a way to show support and solidarity throughout the district.

Operation Decorate Downingtown was not only a fun way to show district pride, but also one of the many ways DASD is supporting student mental health and wellness during the pandemic. School counselors and prevention specialists continue to provide services online, thousands of meals have been distributed to families in need, and teachers and administrators check in regularly with students. A video sharing all of the creative decorations can be found at www.dasd.org/ operationdecorate.

Then, when the restrictions really came into play, they (tutored) by telephone and sent their students things by mail.” Currently, student/tutor pairs meet via Zoom. Training was provided to the tutors. “We are on our third workshop that we’ve done in the past five weeks to help tutors become adept at virtual teaching,” Potrako noted. “It was a concentrated effort to get used to Zoom. We felt it was our responsibility to present to our tutors new ways of creating lessons and English language learning though all this technology.” The March training for tutors was done via Zoom, and in April, the organization moved its “Peer to Peer” workshops online. The workshops, normally held in person several times a year, focus on current trends or topics of interest to tutors. More than 40 people attended the virtual workshops. Potrako noted that the student/tutor pairs have adapted quickly to Zoom and frequently use the screen sharing feature. Students and tutors receive companion textbooks, so those can also be referenced during a Zoom call. “The other beauty of Zoom is

WCU Receives Donation As the COVID-19 pandemic closed businesses and higher education in March, West Chester University (WCU) students who lacked technology did not lack support. While staff in WCU Information Services and Technologies (IS&T) rallied resources - and their own determination - to ensure students could continue their courses remotely, the West Chester University Foundation addressed needs from behind the scenes. One of the early success stories involves nearly $20,000 in laptops donated by Lenovo through initial dialogue with Teresa Hudson, director of IS&T’s Educational Technologies and User Services. The IS&T Help Desk team was able to configure and get these laptops to WCU students in need so that they could continue their coursework remotely. WCU recognized Lenovo for donating 26 laptops to students in the university’s Promise Program, which supports

the face-to-face contact,” she said. “You are not losing that relationship connection. You are getting a better sense of listening and the visual you need to correct someone’s language, which is different from a phone (session).” Potrako added that students seem even more determined to learn English during this time. “It’s brought out a creative spirit,” she said, noting that staff members also meet via Zoom. “We are impressed by all the things that our students are doing and still making time for their tutors even if they are managing two or three children at home and are still working. It’s remarkable.” For more information about VEP, including how to become a volunteer tutor, readers may email volunteer.english@ volunteerenglish.org or visit www.volunteerenglish.org.

Hundreds of Downingtown Area School District residents participated in Operation Decorate Downingtown.

According to Terri Potrako, VEP executive director, the organization already had plans in place that could enable staff members to work remotely. “We had a continuity plan, which is more on the lines of what a business would anticipate. It could be anything from power outages to a natural disaster,” she stated. “No one expected a pandemic, but we had a structure in place, and we were building up the ability for our staff to work remotely. We had our own laptops and phone system and database secured via a web platform.” Even before the pandemic, VEP was offering remote services for its students as well. “Traditionally, over 34 years, VEP mostly had adult immigrants come to the office, be interviewed, take tests and meet their tutors in a physical location,” Potrako explained. “Over the last several years, we needed to be mobile because the adult learners don’t always have cars and they are trying to fit in learning English in between life’s demands. Instead of people coming to West Chester, we were going out to Coatesville and Phoenixville - anywhere there was need. We called it ‘ VEP Without Walls.’” She said that the VEP staff members and tutors immediately stepped into action when the office doors closed. “We adapted overnight. We physically stopped

It Takes a Village has also recently started a campaign to help people in need directly by asking for donations on its Facebook page. “If someone is really impacted by the coronavirus, they can fill out a form and volunteers will coordinate donations to those people,” George explained. “They will say exactly what they need, (such as) what type of food and what type of cleaning products they need. We will have a coordinator pick up donations. It’s a tangible way of helping.” She said that the organization will also refer those in need to social service agencies if it cannot meet a family’s or an individual’s request. “We only help a family or individual once every two years,” said George. “We’re not in the position to offer longterm solutions. We are a bridge to get people past this point of extreme need.” It Takes a Village has also been awarding grants to people who have been affected by coronavirus. “They tell us what their

Health Department Adds Data To Website In its effort to continue providing comprehensive public information regarding coronavirus cases in Chester County, the Chester County Health Department has added new data to its COVID-19 web pages. The new data, focused on long-term care facilities and personal care homes, can be accessed at www.chesco.org/coronavirus. One of the key roles of the Chester County Health Department as it relates to COVID-19 is the assistance to long-term

care facilities and personal care homes in identifying cases, reviewing practices and managing the spread of the coronavirus. In addition to this support, many of the facilities have reached a point where staff, residents and families of residents also need emotional and mental health support. Chester County Health Department director Jeanne Casner noted that this support is being provided by the Health Department in conjunction with the county’s

Department of Human Services, Department of Aging Services and Department of Mental Health Services. As long-term care facilities and personal care homes are licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health or Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, the Chester County Health Department does not provide details of COVID-19 cases or deaths to specifically named long-term care facilities or personal care homes.

Hospital Receives Donated Masks Members of the Plain community have answered the call from area medical centers to increase their supplies of needed personal protective equipment (PPE). A contingent of helpers from Lancaster and Chester counties have sewn cloth masks to specifications for health care workers, patients and families. As of late April, more than 3,000 masks have been delivered to Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital in Wilmington, Del., where many Plain children receive care. Cindy Bo, operational vice president and chief strategy officer for Nemours, is co-leading the hospital’s efforts to procure PPE as well as personal cloth masks. When the Clinic for Special Children in Strasburg, on whose board Bo serves, heard about Nemours’ need for masks, it notified the

Plain community. Within days, volunteers had produced hundreds of masks, which were collected and delivered to the hospital. Julia Martin, who also works at the Clinic for Special Children, personally delivered scores of masks to the hospital. In addition to duPont Hospital, Nemours provides pediatric care at more than 30 sites across Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
