Walkathon Raises Funds, Promotes Fitness By Francine Fulton
Raising funds and promoting a healthy lifestyle were the goals of the ninth annual walkathon held recently at St. Joseph School in Downingtown. The theme this year was “Hawk-A-Thon,” in honor of the school’s mascot. The event began with a pep rally that featured entertainment by the school band and cheerleaders. Students were also given the opportunity to throw shaving cream pies at several of the school’s teachers. “Faculty members were nominated, and the students were chosen to give them a pie in the face,” explained Maria Read, media chairperson for the walkathon.
As is the walkathon tradition, participants from each grade, including students and teachers, were assigned to wear different colored clothing during the day. All students received Hawk-A-Thon T-shirts in their assigned grade color and were asked to add accessories such as colored knee-high socks, sunglasses, boas, tutus, colored wigs and hats. Following opening ceremonies, students walked around a simulated track in the front school parking lots. The event was held on an inclement day, but the rain held off long enough to allow students to walk outdoors. “We were able to get a little piece of sunshine and get them outside for a little bit,” said Read. Youngster To Represent Chester County Ministerium Churches To Offer Vacation Bible School Programs As Petite Miss Agriculture By Francine Fulton
By Francine Fulton
Margaret Jarvie, 8, a second-grade student at Uwchlan Hills Elementary School, was recently named Chester County Petite Miss United States Agriculture. In her new role, Margaret is promoting agriculture in the area through appearances at local events and by collecting fresh produce for people in need. Margaret’s mother, Meghan, explained that she and her daughter learned about the contest at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. “My daughter loves the Farm Show, and we go to the Farm Show every year and she always sees these girls (who are county agriculture queens), talks to them and she wanted to be involved,” Meghan said. “It is unusual because we don’t live on a farm and she is a little young for 4-H.” Margaret applied for the contest by sending in a photo and writing an essay about why she was interested in agriculture and how she would

Chester County Women’s Services (CCWS), a nonprofit pregnancy care medical center, raised $207,000 at its 34th annual fundraising banquet and silent auction, which was held on May 6. The event, which featured a silent auction of 75 gift baskets, hors d’oeuvres and a photo booth, was held at the Desmond Hotel and Conference Center in Malvern. “It was really a great night for the ministry,” said Michelle Maloney, CCWS development director. “We had 280 people attend.” Following the auction was a formal dinner and presentation featuring pastor Jason Houck from Mission Community Church of Downingtown and Lauren McComas, president and artistic director of SALT Performing Arts in Chester Springs, as masters of ceremonies. CCWS executive director Myriam Ruager and CCWS board member Dr. Aaron Chambers were the evening’s presenters. Even though the event was held in springtime, it reflected a Christmas motif, with a theme of “Light Up the Night.” The presentation focused on the idea that individuals can be the light in a dark world by bringing their personal best to
help others. The fundraiser began with a live rendition of the song “The Little Drummer Boy” with the singers situated around actors portraying the Little Drummer Boy and Mary, holding baby Jesus. “SALT Performing Arts provided the singers, and Mary was also an actress from SALT,” Maloney said, noting that the little drummer boy was portrayed by a local youth from the community. Later in the presentation, Chambers show a recorded ultrasound on-screen. Before closing, he shared a client testimony in which a client came to CCWS and ultimately chose to parent her baby after seeing her baby via ultrasound. Ruager explained the mission of CCWS is “to educate and empower individuals and their families to make life-affirming choices.” She then shared statistics regarding the growth of CCWS’s three Chester County-based centers. “Just as Jesus was the light to the broken world on Christmas Day, we too can be the light, but not just at Christmas, but 365 days per year,” she stated. She concluded her presentation with a client testimony. Live music was provided during the evening by harpists Samantha and Savan-

The goal of the program is to provide an organized approach to analyze and further develop a company’s safety and loss prevention. Participating ABC member firms measure their safety processes and policies on 20 key components through a detailed questionnaire with the goal of implementing or enhancing safety programs that reduce jobsite incidence rates. Participating companies score their level of achievement for each component on a weighted point scale and document their incident rates. Companies receive a recognition level of Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze, or Participant based on this data. Receiving Platinum recognition for the 2019 STEP Awards were Bertolet Construction Corporation, Wernersville; CB Construction Services Inc., Dillsburg; Flyway Excavating Inc., Mount Joy; Mowery, Mechanicsburg; and Wagman Construction Inc., York. Petite Miss Agriculture from pg 1 Margaret will now compete at the Pennsylvania Miss United States Agriculture Pageant in September at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. Contestants will compete based on their age in various categories. Since her crowning, Margaret has volunteered at a local Easter egg hunt and at the Down to Earn Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) facility in Downingtown. “We helped them with their salad exchange (for CSA members),” said Margaret. She has also collected produce for those in need and plans to continue the effort this summer. “When you donate to local food banks, it’s mostly canned foods. She is working with Chester County Food Bank to promote the collection of fresh fruits and vegetables to donate to local food banks,” Meghan explained. “She already collected carrots, onions, potatoes and peppers - items that will last more than few days in the refrigerator - and we donated them to the Phoenixville Community Center.” Margaret will hold a similar food drive during the Uwchlan Township Community
Day celebration on Saturday, July 13, at Lionville Park. “Chester County Food Bank has a truck they park there, and we will put up a tent and we will have different bins that people can drop off their donations,” said Meghan. “What we collect will go to the Lord’s Pantry in Downingtown. We will also print out a bunch of recipes to use with these fresh fruit items so people who come to the food bank know different ways to prepare them.” Margaret was also scheduled to appear in the Memorial Day parade in Downingtown, and she plans to attend a farm camp this summer at a working dairy farm, where she will be able to collect eggs from the chickens, learn about the milking process, make cheese and ice cream and feed the farm’s animals. “I love farm animals - especially cows,” said Margaret. In addition to serving as a Petite Miss, Margaret’s favorite pastime is dancing. “I do jazz, tap and ballet (along with) gymnastics and cheerleading,” she said, adding, “When I grow up, I want to be a dancer and a dancer who rides horses.”

Walkathon from pg 1 While walking, students also had the opportunity to participate in several obstacle course stations, including a hula hoop race, limbo, a balance beam and a tire run while enjoying music provided Sister Diane Licordare, vice principal, who served as a disc jockey during the day. The walkathon ended with a healthy snack. Proceeds from the walkathon will be used to help fund STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math) resources to enhance the curriculum. The students raised money by asking for donations from family and friends. “The goal of the 2019 walk was to raise $15,000,” Read reported. “We came in at $18,456.” She said students obtained donations through a package sent through the mail, as well as through a walkathon fundraiser page, through which students could create their own websites. For the three weeks prior to the event, students had a contest to see which homeroom could raise the most money. Winners of the contest received prizes, including extra recess, a movie

Free Concert Series To Begin In Honey Brook By Francine Fulton
Honey Brook Borough will kick off its summer Concerts in the Park series on Sunday, June 9, at 5:30 p.m. with a performance by the Cabin Dogs. All concerts in the series will take place in the borough park and will be free and open to the public. Attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items for donation to the Honey Brook Food Pantry. There will be a collection bin at each of the concerts this summer. Cabin Dogs features twin brothers Rich and Rob Kwait, who will perform a blend of original music, along with covers of songs by artists such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead and Johnny Cash. Other band members include Ira Race, Stephan DiVincenzo, Lee Schusterman, Jeff Levinsohn and Jeanine Reed. “My brother and I head up the band, and we write the songs,” said Rob. “It’s classic country blues and groovy ’70s jams reminiscent of the Grateful Dead.” He noted that the upcoming concert will mostly be originals, along with a few covers. Rob said that the band is named for the brothers’ practice of writing music in remote locations in various states such as Tennessee, Virginia and New York, as well as Pennsylvania. “My brother and I rented cabins in the mountains (or used friends’ cabins) in the woods to write all the original music, and we sometimes take our dogs along,” Rob said. “We just combined the two (to form the band’s name).” The brothers, who have been performing for more than 15 years, find that writing music is easier when there are no distractions. “We are unplugged and inspired and there for one purpose. We come away with a bunch of songs,” Rob stated. He said that the band enjoys listening to established musicians like the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan, but also enjoys newer artists like country singer Kacey Musgraves, folk musician Ray LaMontagne and Philadelphia -based rock band Dr. Dog. This year marks the first time that Cabin Dogs will play as part of the Honey Brook concert series, but the band members are accustomed to outdoor venues and playing for diverse audiences. “We figure out what the crowd wants to hear. Maybe we will play a different style of music or maybe we jam out more,” Rob said. “We have a lot of songs to choose from. We make it an event that you have
Cabin Dogs, featuring twins Rob (left) and Rich Kwait, will perform on June 9 in the Honey Brook Borough Park as part of the free Honey Brook Concerts in the Park series. to be there to experience.” The band has played at the Newport Folk Festival and the Philadelphia Folk Festival, and last summer, it played as part of the concert series in the Eagleview Town Center in Exton. “We are really excited to play a new venue,” Rob said. “We play stuff that is very danceable and hummable. People have a good time listening to our stuff. It will be a good night under the stars and good early summer concert.” For more information about the band, readers may visit www.facebook.com/cabindogs or www.cabindogs.com. Following the opening performance, the concert series will continue on Sunday, July 7, at 5:30 p.m. with a performance by the Knotwork Band, a trio of Celtic musicians. The third concert of the series will feature Americana band Bovine Social Club on Sunday, Aug. 4, at 5:30 p.m. The fourth and final concert of the series will be on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 5 p.m. It will showcase Serene Green, a traditional bluegrass band. During all of the concerts, food will be available for sale by the Honey Brook Lions Club. Visitors should bring chairs and blankets for seating. In the event of inclement weather, the concerts will be canceled by 1 p.m. on the day of the show. There will be a recorded message on the borough office line at 610-273-2020. The Honey Brook Borough Park is located on Pequea Avenue (Route 10), directly behind the Honey Brook Post Office. For additional information, readers may call the borough office, email Jeanne Jenzano at jjenzano@hbboro.net or visit www.honeybrookborough.net/ Concerts.html.
