CCWS Holds Diaper Giveaway By Francine Fulton
Chester County Women’s Services held a free diaper giveaway on May 13 at its Coatesville office. During the event, staff members distributed more than 6,800 diapers.
Chester County Women’s Services (CCWS), a pregnancy care medical center, held a free diaper giveaway on May 13 at its Coatesville office. The giveaway was open to anyone in the community in need of diapers and wipes for their children due to the effects of COVID-19. Those who were interested in receiving the free diapers were asked to call CCWS in advance during normal business hours to reserve the size diapers that they needed. The event was promoted on CCWS social media sites, and information was distributed through flyers that were given out by partner organizations, such as the Community, Youth, and Women’s Alliance (CYWA); Gaudenzia; and The Bridge Academy. “In total, 100 families received this

The community was invited to contribute to the effort by donating money that was then used by CCWS to purchase the diapers. “We have a COVID emergency fund on our website, so people gave monetary donations through that,” Maloney explained. “We also have an Amazon baby registry and a Walmart wish list. People could go on and select what is on the registries and have it mailed directly to CCWS. We did not take physical donations (of diapers), so people could make a donation without contact. It was a tangible way to help.” On the day of the giveaway, CCWS staff members followed social distancing guidelines. “(People) drove up and popped their trunks (and the diapers were placed inside),” said Maloney. “For

Rotary Club Continues To Serve The Community

In previous years, The Arc of Chester County, a nonprofit organization that supports people with developmental and intellectual disabilities and their families, held a walking and running event that took place at West Goshen Community Park in West Chester. During the fundraiser, adults and youths alike walked through bubble stations along a 1-mile course or ran a 5K through adjacent neighborhoods. This year, however, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Bubble Walk, Run and Fun event went virtual. After registering online, participants were invited to walk in their own neighborhood, in parks, along trails or to any destination of their choice on May 17. Individuals and families shared photos of their activities throughout the day at www.facebook.com /arcofchestercounty with the hashtags #ArcCCWalkingStrong and #ArcCCRunningStrong. Through the efforts of the walkers and runners and title sponsor Communications Test Design Inc.
Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the Rotary Club of Thorndale-Downingtown has continued to serve the community. Club members traveled to the Honey Brook Food Pantry on May 27, where they presented a $2,100 donation to food pantry director Ken Ross. Part of the donation represented a matching grant provided through the Gundaker Relief Emergency Assistance Team (GREAT) Grant for COVID-19. Outgoing Rotary president Elva Wright explained that during a Rotary Zoom meeting, members agreed to donate $1,000 to the food pantry and then to ask
for a matching grant from the Gundaker Foundation. A Rotary member later added the extra $100 to make the total of $2,100 donated to the food bank. See Rotary pg 3

(CTDI), 200 walkers and runners raised $92,000 for The Arc. Participants included walkers and runners in Chester and Delaware counties and other areas of Pennsylvania, along with other states, including New Jersey and Delaware and as far away as Massachusetts. Many walkers and runners formed fundraising teams to raise additional dollars for The Arc. The Arc’s executive director, Jeanne Meikrantz, and board president, Stephen Potts, kicked off the Bubble Walk, Run and Fun event with live posts on Facebook. “I would like to thank all our sponsors and everyone who made the walk possible virtually this year,” Meikrantz stated. “Now more than ever, families, children,
and adults with disabilities and their families are relying on our supports and services.” Meikrantz then blew some ceremonial bubbles and took off for her walk. Potts noted that people ran and walked in different places, but were all united for the same cause. “The Arc Walk, Run and Fun event was an opportunity to be a champion for children and adults with disabilities, and it also made us feel more connected to one another during COVID,” he stated. Even though the virtual event has ended, donations are still being accepted. “We were nervous in the beginning having to go virtual, but the community really came through for us and we are still getting donations now,” said, Kelli Martino, development
and marketing manager, noting that the fundraising goal of $100,000 has been set by The Arc. The agency hopes to raise that amount by fiscal year end, which is on Tuesday, June 30. Proceeds from The Arc Bubble Walk Run and Fun event will support The Arc of Chester County’s programs and services, which include advocacy, children’s early learning, family support services, employment and transportation. The Arc provides services in Chester County and the surrounding area to 3,000 individuals and families a year. During the stay-at-home order, The Arc offices and preschool have been closed. Other services that have been temporarily suspended include Building the Basics through Learning Experiences (ABBLES)
classes for children with autism and adult transportation services and recreation events. However, staff members have been working from home and the agency has continued to operate. “The Arc continues to provide services as much as possible and safely,” said Potts. “Like other businesses and nonprofits, we are unable to do as much as we want or normally (do), but we are ready to (open) as soon as we can - as soon as we get the signal. “Our core mission continues to advocate, to educate and to provide services to empower individuals with disabilities and their families to enhance their quality of life,” he added. mortgage for the full purchase price of the home. “They are not given a home for free,” Wiseman explained. “They pay a mortgage at a muchreduced rate. The mortgage pays for the cost of the construction.” In his new role as executive director, Wiseman works closely with the board of directors, Habitat staff members, volunteers and Habitat families. “My role is to manage all of the operations of the organization,” he stated, noting that this includes three areas of responsibility. First, he oversees the home building process with help from the construction supervisor, and, second, he is responsible for the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Caln Township, located at 1853 E. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville. “(The store offers) slightly used goods and home products and is one of the few sources of constant revenue,” he stated. Thirdly, his job involves family services, which includes identifying families that quality for a Habitat home. “ We hold the
mortgage, so we are in constant communication with the families for the life of the home,” Wiseman noted. His goal as the new executive director is to not only build homes, but to renovate existing homes in local communities. “Rehabilitation is the goal of our board for the next year,” he said. “(After that) we will move to neighborhood revitalizations. We will look at neighborhoods and city blocks to see what we can help build to raise the value of all the homes in the community, whether it is (adding) parks or doing facelifts on buildings.” HfHCC currently has homes under construction in Coatesville, as well as West Grove, where a 40-townhome community is being built. These efforts have been limited over the past several months due to the coronavirus pandemic. “We always need people to support the organization through time, talent or treasure, (but) we have only been able to have a limited number of volunteers on-site

The foundation was named for Guy Gundaker, a charter member of the Rotary Club of Philadelphia, which is part of Rotary District 7540. Gundaker was president of Rotary International in 1923 and 1924. “Guy Gundaker is from the Philadelphia area, and it’s very rare and exciting to people when a person is chosen from your (district) to be the president of Rotary International. In his honor, the district made a foundation,” said Wright. As part of the GREAT Grant program, Gundaker Foundation District 7450 reported that more than 30 clubs in the district donated $56,120 to food banks and other organizations providing food for those in need. In addition, the Rotary Club of Thorndale-Downingtown donated a total of 700 pairs of headphones and earbuds to Caln Elementary School on May 21. These accessories are designed to accompany the Chromebooks that the school provides to students. “The donation was originally planned to complement the school’s Chromebooks but was put on hold when COVID-19 hit,” Wright noted. “With the students doing e-learning for the foreseeable future, the club reached out to the school district to make sure the headphones/earbuds are put to immediate use. We brought them to the school, and they took care of getting them to the kids. We know the kids needed them.” The money to purchase the headphones and earbuds was raised through the club’s 2019 Chester County Mac and Cheese Cook-Off held in Kerr Park in Downingtown. director at the Brandywine YMCA. “I knew Chip from my time working at the YMCA and I knew some board members and they invited me to apply,” said Wiseman, explaining how he heard about the job opening at HfHCC. “I was looking to come back to a nonprofit - to a community-based organization serving (people) in a significant way.” Wiseman explained that Habitat homeowners are selected based upon three criteria: the need for decent, affordable housing; the ability to repay the mortgage loan; and the willingness to partner with Habitat by participating in the sweat equity program. This requires the homeowners to work 200 to 400 hours on-site along with staff members and volunteer construction workers. Wiseman said one of the most common misconceptions about the organization is that people receive a Habitat home at no cost. In fact, each home is sold to a low-income family using a no-interest, 30-year

For 2019-20, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) West Chester - Chester County has supported four Chester County shelters through the county’s Decade to Doorways (D2D) program. Each year, the local AAUW branch selects a recipient for its annual Gateway to Equity Award, which honors an individual, group or organization that has shown by action and philosophy the promotion of the AAUW mission to advance equity for women and girls though advocacy, education and research. D2D was the recipient this year. Through its selection of the D2D program, which aims to prevent and end homelessness in Chester County, AAUW supported county shelters that house women: Community, Youth and Women’s Alliance (CYWA); Friends Association for the Care and Protection of Children; Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC); and Safe Harbor. At each monthly meeting of AAUW, members contributed household and personal items, monetary donations, gift cards and/or volunteer support to a different shelter throughout AAUW’s program year, September through May. Jane Schultz and Fran Pierce, liaisons to Friends Association, arranged for decorating help for the Friends Association’s December gala, in addition to donating items. Liaisons to Safe Harbor were Peggy Staarman and Kim Levan, and Mimi Jones and Elaine Burgess were liaisons to CYWA. In lieu of donated items, the DVCCC requested volunteers to help with its spring gala, a major fundraising event. Eva Kaufman and Cathy Palmquist, DVCCC liaisons, arranged for phone calls, and several mailings to donors, businesses and supporters. They also lined up a Boy Scout troop to help with parking. Unfortunately, the gala had to be canceled due to the pandemic. The branch’s final fundraising event for the program year is its Teapot Fundraiser, where members decorate and fill porcelain teapots with loose change for donation. These funds will

Chester County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell and Michelle Kichline recently announced the awarding of $5 million in grants to 248 Chester County small businesses and agricultural enterprises. The individual grants, made available through the Chester County Main Street Preservation program for small businesses impacted by COVID-19, range from just under $1,500 to $25,000. The Chester County Main Street Preservation grant program was created at the request of the Chester County commissioners in May to provide funding for small businesses and agricultural enterprises impacted by COVID-19. The Chester County Economic Development Council
(CCEDC) administered the Main Street Preservation grant program on behalf of Chester County with support from county government departments. The program invited forprofit small businesses and agricultural enterprises formed and active in 2019 or earlier, with revenues of $500,000 or less to apply. The other requirement was that the businesses must be physically located and headquartered in Chester County. The Chester County Main Street Preservation grant program received 674 applications from small businesses and agricultural enterprises, and from those applications, the 248 grants were awarded. The Chester County commissioners recently launched www.RestoreChesterCounty.o rg, a comprehensive online toolkit that offers guidelines specifically designed for Chester County’s more than 15,000 businesses and 525,000 residents who moved from the red phase to the yellow phase on June 5. Visitors to the new website will immediately be presented with access to a Business & Org Toolkit as well as a Resident Toolkit. The Business & Org toolkit lists guidelines that span industries, including a checklist for knowing if one’s business is ready, how to get it ready and how to find resources for obtaining personal protective equipment. Business and organizational leaders can also access information for 20 different business and organization sectors, including agriculture, office settings, restaurants, personal care, schools, and religious organizations. All information found on www.RestoreChesterCounty.org is drawn from federal, state and county guidelines. Feedback from Chester County’s nine chambers of commerce and businesses was compared with Pennsylvania mitigation recommendations to make sure the toolkit includes coronavirus
prevention strategies that are realistic and therefore will be followed by county businesses. The guidelines are designed to supplement, not replace, requirements from any level of government, safety laws, or rules and regulations applicable to a particular industry segment. Restore Chester County is an initiative launched by the county’s COVID-19 Business Task Force, a collaborative of business, economic, education and government leaders formed by the Chester County commissioners in April to focus on reopening and restoring Chester County’s economy in the wake of COVID-19. Chester County businesses have been sharing their innovative ways to safely offer services by emailing the task force at business@chesco.org, and many of those strategies are shared throughout www.RestoreChesterCounty.or g in vignettes that feature the business owners and their stories. The stories will be shared in the social media campaign #RestoreChesCo throughout the summer. Chester County businesses and residents are encouraged to share their reopening experiences, tips and insights using the hashtag #RestoreChesCo.

YMCA Schedules Camp, Child Care drop-off and pickup with a YGBW staff member accompanying each child to his or her group or classroom. All staff members will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks and gloves during this process. Parents of infants are welcome to come into the facility to drop off and pick up their children, so long as they go through YGBW’s health screening process. Also, camp and child care groups will be smaller than in previous years. These groups will function as a cohort, staying together throughout the day. For information on additional changes to summer camp and child care programs at the YMCA, readers may visit www.ymcagbw.org/YGBW. As always at the YMCA, before- and after-camp time is included at no additional cost and financial assistance is available. Sibling discounts are offered. Swimming in the YMCA’s indoor pools will be available at most camp locations this summer. Weekly camp activities include arts and crafts, nature and STEM, drama, field games, sports and movement, water play and theme-related activities. YGBW is also working to intentionally incorporate language arts and math opportunities into activities to support students academically during the summer months. Summer camp is open to children ages 3 to 15. Offerings vary by location and include traditional day camp, as well as several specialty camps. Child care is open to children beginning at 6 months. Following Gov. Tom Wolf ’s announcement that Chester County moved to the yellow phase on June 5, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine’s (YGBW) camp and child care programs reopened on June 8. For several weeks, YGBW has been preparing to safely offer camp and child care in light of COVID-19. Many new protocols and procedures have been implemented in accordance with the latest directives from the CDC and American Camping Association, and staff members have undergone extensive training to prepare. YGBW staff members have trained in the latest cleaning and disinfection protocols provided by the CDC, as well as in social distancing, stable groups and virus spread reduction. In addition, all Y staff members receive training annually in child abuse, first aid, CPR and workplace safety. Children will also participate in an orientation covering personal space, handwashing and other best practices to protect their own health and safety. In addition, more frequent hand-washing breaks and enhanced disinfecting procedures are being implemented, including the addition of more sinks and hand sanitizing stations. All children and staff members will be screened daily. Anyone with a temperature over 100.4 and/or exhibiting other symptoms of illness will not be permitted to attend. Visitors will not be allowed on-site without special approval. Parents and guardians will remain in their cars during
AAUW Awards Scholarship time, she fostered children in addition to raising her own children. She adopted a foster child who is now 15 years old. Still, she did not give up her dream of pursuing higher education. Bridgett enrolled in Community College of Philadelphia, earning her Associate of Arts with high honors in 2009. That fall, she enrolled at Temple University in the Bachelor of Social Work program but was unable to continue because she had reached the maximum in allowed loans. Again, she persevered, working to clear her debt. In 2019, Bridgett enrolled at WCU, where her academic adviser rates her as exceptional in all areas, including initiative, motivation, reliability, creativity, leadership, communications skills and intellectual abilities. Bridgett’s adviser praised her for her “extraordinary social justice and advocacy skills,” in addition to her “strong commitment to and knack for academic excellence.” Bridgett said her experience as a mother and foster mother have shaped her educational path and choice of career. Her hope is to provide a group home

Bridgett’s daughter is a student at the University of Virginia on a full academic scholarship and is scheduled to graduate in 2021. “Even if my daughter beats me to the punch and graduates first, I will proceed,” said Bridgett. “After graduation, I hope to pay it forward to someone else.”

“If there is a single word that describes the Alice Lawson Scholarship winner, Mykia Bridgett, it’s ‘determined,’” said Deb Liczwek, co-chair of the scholarship committee along with Diane Dougherty. Bridgett received a $1,500 scholarship to West Chester University (WCU) from the West Chester - Chester County branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). The scholarship is awarded annually by the AAUW to a nontraditional female student. It is named for the late Alice Lawson, a lifelong AAUW member who joined AAUW branches wherever she and her husband moved. Lawson had a special empathy for young women who faced financial challenges in pursuing a college degree. Lawson was offered an opportunity to enroll in college by a nun at Seton College when her family did not have money for college after educating her four older siblings and the Depression came along. Bridgett started her journey in higher education in 1993. Marriage and children interrupted her schooling, and, for a

In 2016, House of His Creation (HOHC) became Family of Restoration Ministries (FORM). Shortly thereafter, the ministry moved from its location on Lititz Pike to 541 W. 28th Division Highway, Lititz. At the time, House of His Creation still existed as a maternity home on the new property, serving women age 18 and older. Loving and Caring Resources, which also came under the FORM umbrella, held on-site classes including The Parenting Journey and the Beautiful You events. In December 2019, the ministry decided to make another change. “We will be back to solely operating as HOHC,” read a letter from Matthew Neff, executive director. Loving and Caring Resources services will continue to be present and active at the site. Callie Neff, housing support specialist with HOHC, explained the transition. “We had become more of a teaching, training, and equipping kind of ministry (as FORM),” she noted. “We wanted to focus back on our primary mission, which is housing.” Over the nearly 50 years since HOHC was founded, the ministry mainly offered maternity housing with a mother and child component. The Neffs served at the house on Lititz Pike in that capacity. “We were living with young teen moms,” recalled Callie, “(but) who was calling (for help) changed.” Women who are in need of help now are usually between the ages of 18 to 24 and come from a variety of backgrounds, but they have a common need - a short-term safe place to regroup. While there are an abundance of services in the Lancaster area, there is also great need. “For a woman to be told we should have an opening in two weeks that’s too long,” said Matthew. “We can fill in those two weeks,” added Callie, who noted that HOHC will function with two different on-site models. First, the stone house will remain available for pregnant women. Bedrooms are available in the house where women can be served in a family model. “They live with our family
and we offer case management, transportation, and the whole gamut of social services and support,” said Callie. The second model will be apartments located on the property that can fill the gap for women who need a safe place to stay for a few weeks. “The apartments are being shifted so that some of the rooms are designated for ministry purposes for women escaping (exploitation, human trafficking, or abuse),” said Callie. “They need that first stop to work through the crisis and figure out what’s next.” Matthew noted that as apartments become available, more will be open to the increased need for women in the Manheim, Ephrata, Warwick, and Manheim Township areas who have been seeking help in the last year. Once the crisis has passed, the ministry can help a woman begin to work toward goals. “It may be finding a program or housing,” said Callie. Matthew added that a woman need not have children to turn to the ministry for help, but he noted that children are often a motivating factor in leaving an unsafe situation. “(We can offer a place) for her and the children to sleep safely, and they have the chance to plan the future while being out of the (unsafe) circumstances,” Matthew said. Callie summed up the changes in the ministry, saying, “It has expanded beyond the limitation of calling just because of a pregnancy. A lot of the same factors are at work in the lives of these women, and the path to finding a way out is generally the same.” She added that a safe place and healthy supports are available to clients of HOHC. “We have the added bonus of the years of experience walking through pregnancies. That’s been our foundation,” she said. Current needs of the ministry include new doors for the apartments. “I would love to have a new door campaign,” said Matthew. “Doors cost up to $300 each, and we need 14 for six apartment units.” He noted that individuals could sponsor a single door or builders could donate excess inventory. Readers who would like more information about the ministry may visit www.hohc.org.
Matthew Neff (left), executive director of House of His Creation (HOHC), and Callie Neff, housing support specialist, stand beside the sign at the ministry’s location in northern Lititz. After using the name Family of Restoration Ministries for several years, HOHC is returning to its roots by providing housing for women in certain circumstances.

The Gateway to Equity Award honors a local individual, group, or organization that has shown by action and philosophy the promotion of the AAUW mission. Former WCU president Madeleine Wing Adler was the first recipient of the award in 2008. In 2019, the award supported Decade to Doorways, a Chester County organization dedicated to eliminating homelessness, through which AAUW supported four homeless shelters in Chester County. AAUW West Chester-Chester County Branch was organized and founded in 1959 by faculty from WCU and community leaders.
