David’s Drive 831 (DD831), a Chester County-based organization with the motto of “Helping Veterans Because We Should,” continued its charitable work during the coronavirus outbreak. For a period of six weeks, the charity purchased and packed nonperishable food items that were delivered to local at-risk veterans. DD831 is named for David Turner Jr., who was employed at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center when he passed away at the age of 20 in December 2009. His family members started the all-volunteer David’s Drive 831 charity to

benefit veterans by providing muchneeded goods and services. The 831 symbolizes the phrase “I love you,” because the phrase contains eight letters in three words that have one meaning. See David’s Drive pg 4

Over the course of six weeks, Sam (left), Joy (center) and David Turner Sr. from David’s Drive 831 (DD831) packed more than 400 bags of food for local veterans. The charity purchased the food at cost from local grocery stores. DD831 also announced that St. Joseph’s Parish’s fourth annual golf outing on July 13, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council 7208, will benefit DD831.

donate $1,000 to the food pantry and then to ask for a matching grant from the Gundaker Foundation. A Rotary member later added the extra $100 to make the total of $2,100 donated to the food bank. The foundation was named for Guy Gundaker, a charter member of the Rotary Club of Philadelphia, which is part of Rotary District 7540. Gundaker was president of Rotary International in 1923 and 1924. “Guy Gundaker is from the Philadelphia area, and it’s very rare and exciting to people when a person is chosen from your (district) to be the president of Rotary International. In his honor, the district made a foundation,” said Wright. As part of the GREAT Grant program, Gundaker Foundation District 7450 reported that more than 30 clubs in the district donated $56,120 to food banks and other organizations providing food for those in need.

In addition, the Rotary Club of Thorndale-Downingtown donated a total of 700 pairs of headphones and earbuds to Caln Elementary School on May 21. These accessories are designed to accompany the Chromebooks that the school provides to students. “The donation was originally planned to complement the school’s Chromebooks but was put on hold when COVID-19 hit,” Wright noted. “With the students doing e-learning for the foreseeable future, the club reached out to the school district to make sure the headphones/earbuds are put to immediate use. We brought them to the school, and they took care of getting them to the kids. We know the kids needed them.” The money to purchase the headphones and earbuds was raised through the club’s 2019 Chester County Mac and Cheese CookOff held in Kerr Park in Downingtown.

Zumba Gold from pg 1 “She emailed the neighbors (about participating) and I emailed my class since my gym is closed, and we had 14 people the very first Sunday.” Carl said the classes, which are offered free of charge, are easy to follow, even for those with no experience. “We (use) visual cues. We pat our right leg and then you go right,” she explained. “I choreograph everything myself to music. I have my phone attached to a speaker, and it is loud enough for the people in the back to hear.” She said Zumba Gold is designed for older people but is suitable for individuals of all ages. “Zumba Gold is a safer, slower (exercise),” she said. “There is no jumping up and down. It’s low-impact because we are on concrete.” People of all ages have been attending the classes, which feature music from artists ranging from Frank Sinatra and Britney Spears and Ricky Martin. The class on June 21 included an 80year-old who danced alongside a family with an 8-year-old. “It’s very accessible. It’s a follow-along dance not like what you see on TV for 20-year-olds,” said Carl. “We do the cha-cha and some pop songs and the tango but in a scaled-down and fun way. It’s inspired,

fun music. I do swing music and some belly dancing so everyone has a good experience.” Carl, who was a music teacher for 34 years, has also been teaching exercise for that long. “I was teaching high impact and yoga, but I got hooked on Zumba Gold because I can dance and it’s not too hard,” she stated. “People love it because there is not much offered for seniors. It is a bridge between exercising while sitting on a chair like Silver Sneakers (and) the high-impact stuff.” “It is easy to follow for people of all shapes and sizes, and (it’s) the most fun I have all week,” added Sitkoff, who has joint replacements and is thankful to have the class offered right at her doorstep. Carl said the classes will continue unless it is too hot to allow participants to enjoy the class safely. They will be notified via email early on Sunday morning if the class is canceled. “I am thrilled I can share what I do. I love choreography and making up dances,” she said, adding, “I never thought I would be teaching my Zumba class for three months outside.” For more information about the outdoor class, readers may email Carl at jean carlyoga@gmail.com.

Although the cook-off is normally held in the spring, the 2020 event has been rescheduled to Sunday, Oct. 4. Previous Rotary projects with Caln Elementary School have included donating book bags to students in need and providing meals and gifts for families during the holiday season. The club has also donated dictionaries to Caln third-graders for the past 10 years. The club normally meets every Friday at the Thorndale Craft House, but since the pandemic, the group has been meeting

virtually. Wright reported that two new members have recently decided to join the club. “We had two people coming to our meetings because of this (pandemic) because they wanted to do something (in the community) and participate,” she said. For more information about the club, readers may visit www.thorndalerotary.org or www.facebook.com/Rotary.ThorndalePA or email info@thorndalerotary.org.

4-H To Offer Virtual, Interactive Summer Camps By Francine Fulton

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Penn State Extension 4-H Youth Development program will offer interactive events this summer via Zoom, including virtual day camps and self-guided activities. The virtual camps are being offered free of charge for any youths ages 8 to 10 who are currently enrolled in the Pennsylvania 4-H program. For youths who are not 4-H members, there will be a one-time fee, which includes 4-H membership. The online programs are being offered in lieu of in-person camps held throughout the county, including those at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook. “At this time, everything will be virtual,” said Logan Hall, Extension educator. He noted that 4-H activities continued during the stay-at-home order. For example, the annual summer beef show normally held in early June at the 4-H Center was done virtually. “During COVID-19, a lot of our 4-H clubs have been meeting virtually. They are still active and still involved. 4-H has not stopped by any means,” Hall stated. “We are still providing educational

David’s Drive from pg 1 DD831’s effort in partnership with the Coatesville VA began on March 30. On that day, the Turner family picked up cases of food products that were ordered from Triple Fresh Market, where David was once employed. With the help of staff members, the food was loaded into the DD831 pickup truck. “(Triple Fresh) provided the product at cost,” said David Turner Sr., DD831 founder and president. “(We then) traveled less than a mile away to East Fallowfield Park, where David was a volunteer and his memorial bench is located.” Members of the Turner family sorted and separated all the canned goods into green reusable David’s Drive tote bags. Each bag included items such as tuna fish, boxed macaroni and cheese, canned chicken, peanut butter and jelly, juice, canned soups, nonperishable milk, juice and applesauce. On March 30, the family, assisted by Jennifer Lilly, chief of volunteer services at the Coatesville VA, packaged 48 bags con-

taining approximately 20 food products in each, totaling close to 1,000 products. The packages were then transported to the Coatesville VA to be distributed by health care personnel to at-risk veterans in the community, including those who receive home health care and others in the HUDVASH (Housing and Urban Development VA Support Housing) program. Over the course of six weeks, David’s Drive donated 450 bags, totaling $6,000 worth of food. “When the weather cooperated, we met at the park, but for the last couple weeks we (sorted the food) at the Great Hall at the VA,” Turner reported, noting that Crop’s Fresh Marketplace in Downingtown also joined the effort by offering groceries at cost. Turner also announced that the annual David’s Drive picnic and clothing collection, which was scheduled for May 17, was canceled. As part of the event, lunch is provided to those who bring donations of new men’s and women’s underwear, socks and T-shirts, which are given to

homeless and hospitalized veterans from the Coatesville VA. The first David’s Drive picnic was held on May 22, 2010, which would have been David’s 21st birthday. Instead of the picnic, DD831 hosted a donation drive in the park on June 14, Flag Day. “We just provided a safe dropoff for people because veterans need this stuff,” Turner said. “People were very generous. We ended up receiving donations with an estimated (worth) of $10,000.” Additionally, St. Joseph’s Parish’s fourth annual golf outing, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council 7208, will benefit DD831. The event will be held on Monday, July 13, at Applecross Country Club, 170A Zynn Road, Downingtown. Golf will begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. For more details and to register, readers may contact Joe Cutolo at JCutolo@gmail.com or Brian Roselli at Brian@brianroselli.com. in a significant way.” Wiseman explained that Habitat homeowners are selected based upon three criteria: the need for decent, affordable housing; the ability to repay the mortgage loan; and the willingness to

munication with the families for the life of the home,” Wiseman noted. His goal as the new executive director is to not only build homes, but to renovate existing homes in local communities. “Rehabilitation is the goal of our board for the next year,” he said. “(After that) we will move to neighborhood revitalizations. We will look at neighborhoods and city blocks to see what we can help build to raise the value of all the homes in the community, whether it is (adding) parks or doing facelifts on buildings.” HfHCC currently has homes under construction in Coatesville, as well as West Grove, where a 40-townhome community is being built. These efforts have been limited over the past several months due to the coronavirus pandemic. “We always need people to support the organization through time, talent or treasure, (but) we have only been able to have a limited number of volunteers onsite to keep them safe,” Wiseman noted. “We hope to open up that more soon. There will be (volunteer) opportunities to work at the home sites, at the ReStore and in the office.” For more information, readers may call 610-384-7993 or visit www.hfhcc.org or www.facebook.com/chescohabitat. More information about the ReStore is available at www.facebook.com/HFHCalnReStore.

Lincoln Highway, Coatesville. “(The store offers) slightly used goods and home products and is one of the few sources of constant revenue,” he stated. Thirdly, his job involves family services, which includes identifying families that quality for a Habitat home. “We hold the mortgage, so we are in constant com-

the YMCA and I knew some board members and they invited me to apply,” said Wiseman, explaining how he heard about the job opening at HfHCC. “I was looking to come back to a nonprofit - to a community-based organization serving (people)

“They are not given a home for free,” Wiseman explained. “They pay a mortgage at a much-reduced rate. The mortgage pays for the cost of the construction.” In his new role as executive director, Wiseman works closely with the board of directors, Habitat staff members, volunteers and Habitat families. “My role is to manage all of the operations of the organization,” he stated, noting that this includes three areas of responsibility. First, he oversees the home building pro-

partner with Habitat by participating in the sweat equity program. This requires the homeowners to work 200 to 400 hours on-site along with staff members and volunteer construction workers. Wiseman said one of the most common misconceptions about the organization is that people receive a Habitat home at no cost. In fact, each home is sold to a low-income family using a no-interest, 30-year mortgage for the full purchase price of the home.

Following Gov. Tom Wolf’s announcement that Chester County moved to the yellow phase on June 5, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine’s (YGBW) camp and child care programs reopened on June 8. For several weeks, YGBW has been preparing to safely offer camp and child care in light of COVID-19. Many new protocols and procedures have been implemented in accordance with the latest directives from the CDC and American Camping Association, and staff members have undergone extensive training to prepare. YGBW staff members have trained in the latest cleaning and disinfection protocols provided by the CDC, as well as in social distancing, stable groups and virus spread reduction. In addition, all Y staff members receive training annually in child abuse, first aid, CPR and workplace safety. Children will also participate in an orientation covering personal space, handwashing and other best practices to protect their own health and safety. In addition, more frequent hand-washing breaks and enhanced disinfecting procedures are being implemented, including the addition of more sinks and hand sanitizing stations. All children and staff members will be screened daily. Anyone with a temperature over 100.4 and/or exhibiting other symptoms of illness will not be permitted to attend. Visitors will not be allowed on-site without special approval. Parents and guardians will remain in their cars during drop-off and pickup with a YGBW staff member accompanying each child to his or her group or classroom. All staff members will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks and gloves during this process. Parents of infants are welcome to come into the facility to drop off and pick up their children, so long as they go through YGBW’s health screening process. Also, camp and child care groups will be smaller than in previous

The YMCA of Greater Brandywine opened summer camp and child care programs on June 8 with new safety protocols and procedures. years. These groups will function as a cohort, staying together throughout the day. For information on additional changes to summer camp and child care programs at the YMCA, readers may visit www.ymca gbw.org/YGBW. As always at the YMCA, beforeand after-camp time is included at no additional cost and financial assistance is available. Sibling discounts are offered. Swimming in the YMCA’s indoor pools will be available at most camp locations this summer. Weekly camp activities include arts and crafts, nature and STEM, drama, field games, sports and movement, water play and themerelated activities. YGBW is also working to intentionally incorporate language arts and math opportunities into activities to support students academically during the summer months. Summer camp is open to children ages 3 to 15. Offerings vary by location and include traditional day camp, as well as several specialty camps. Child care is open to children beginning at 6 months. Camp registration is available at www .ymcagbw.org/camponline. Those interested in child care can complete the interest form at www .ymcagbw.org/preschool-childcare -ymca-greater-brandywine. Chester County Commissioners Award Grants Chester County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell and Michelle Kichline recently announced the awarding of $5 million in grants to 248 Chester County small businesses and agricultural enterprises. The individual grants, made available through the Chester County Main Street Preservation program for small businesses impacted by COVID-19, range from just under $1,500 to $25,000. The Chester County Main Street Preservation grant program was created at the request of the Chester County commissioners in May to provide funding for small businesses and agricultural enterprises impacted by COVID-19. The Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC)

administered the Main Street Preservation grant program on behalf of Chester County with support from county government departments. The program invited forprofit small businesses and agricultural enterprises formed and active in 2019 or earlier, with revenues of $500,000 or less to apply. The other requirement was that the businesses must be physically located and headquartered in Chester County. The Chester County Main Street Preservation grant program received 674 applications from small businesses and agricultural enterprises, and from those applications, the 248 grants were awarded. The businesses receiving the grants are located throughout all of Chester County.
