Two World War II Veterans Reunite By Francine Fulton

Two United States Army veterans who served together during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II have continued their friendship for more than 70 years. Eugene Morell, 92, was only 18 when the battle took place, and Ira Needham, 99, was 25. The pair recently met in person when Morell traveled from New York with his granddaughter and her family to meet with Needham in his home in Honey Brook. The two spent the day together sharing snacks and beverages and reminiscing about their time together in the war. “We were on a 105 Howitzer together,” said Needham, explaining that the large piece of artillery was brought into battle on the back of a truck. “We are the only two left from our outfit.” “There were five us that operated the See Veterans pg 7

The Frolic will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day except for Aug. 18, when the sale will close at 4 p.m. According to Jon Weaver-Kreider, used book manager for LMHS, who is helming this year’s sale, books that have been collected for the Frolic fit into more than 20 categories. “We have a lot of theology and religion, history and politics,” said

Bookworms from pg 1 When an organization collects 40,000 books for a sale and endeavors to sell all those books in four days, drastic sales measures may be employed. The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS) takes on such a challenge with by-the-box discounts beginning on the third day of its annual Bookworm Frolic. On the

final day, the box price will be even lower. Although LMHS provides boxes, bookworms may bring their own. “The rule is for it to count, you have to be able to lift (the box of books) yourself,” explained Joel Nofziger, LMHS director of communications, who added jokingly, “Don’t bring a refrigerator box.” This year’s LMHS Bookworm Frolic will take place at LMHS,

Items that are not purchased are recycled to raise funds for Mennonite Central Committee Relief and Development projects. A number of volunteers help make the Bookworm Frolic a success. Weaver-Kreider calculated that 20 volunteers are needed daily to help during the sale, and that about 100 volunteers are involved in the overall event. During the year, up to 30 volunteers help sort incoming book donations. The sale attracts about 4,000 visitors annually, raising up to $40,000 for the organization. All funds raised by the event become part of the general operating budget of the historical society. Readers who would like to learn more about the historical society may visit www.lmhs.org. Weaver-Kreider listed cookbooks, fiction, novels, and Christian fiction among the other categories that will be well represented at the sale. A number of foreign language books in German were also donated for the Frolic. While most of the books available for purchase will be set up outside the LMHS building under a tent, the music section and new books, which will be sold at special discount prices during the sale, will be located inside. Weaver-Kreider noted that food at this year’s sale will be provided by food trucks. “On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, we will have Italian sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, and hot dogs, and on Saturday, we will have breakfast burritos, burgers, sandwiches, saffron and jasmine rice, kabobs, and Costa Rican chicken sandwiches,” said Weaver-Kreider, who added that the food trucks were selected for the diverse menus they offer. to their club, as well as community service. Heilner served two years as president and was noted for her hard work and dedication to the EagleGlenmoore Lions Club. The Eagle-Glenmoore Lions Club always welcomes new members. For more information, visit https://e-club house.org/sites/eagle glenmoore/.

The outdoor event will begin with tailgating in the picnic area behind the church. “We will have grills going and offer Philly food - hot dogs and soft pretzels,” explained Dan Hepner, pastor of Discipleship Ministries at Hopewell UMC. After dinner and a time of fellowship, Cooley will give a talk in the church’s outdoor amphitheater, followed by a question-andanswer session. Serving as master of ceremonies of the program will be Philadelphia sports radio talk show host Chris Stigall, who will also interview Cooley during his radio program prior to the event. Hepner said the evening is open to all, including youngsters who may be considering a career in professional sports. ‘“The Biggest Win’ is about the Eagles’ magical season, but more importantly it is about these six players whose faith transcends their talent and abilities,” said Hepner. “We want young athletes to hear (the message). The book explains that these athletes put their faith ahead of their future and give glory to God for what they are able to achieve.” Hepner noted that the book has received praise from players and coaches alike and that it is being used by pastors and youth leaders as a study guide. He added that the Eagles’ victory is still being celebrated by fans. “ When (Eagles radio

The Chester County 4-H Fair, which gives youths an opportunity to display the many projects they have completed throughout the year, will be held at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook on Monday, Aug. 6, through Saturday, Aug. 11. The tabletop exhibits will open on Aug. 6 after 4 p.m. and will remain on display throughout the week. Veterans from pg 1 pushed us way back along that line, creating a bulge. We lost 7,000 men in one day - as prisoners or killed (in action).” “We were fresh from the United States,” Needham added, noting that his division had arrived in the area to relieve another outfit on Dec. 10, 1944. “They knew we were a green outfit. That is why they waited to start the Battle of the Bulge. We were scared to death. We had never been in combat before.” Both men remember being fired upon by German soldiers. “They had an 88-shell gun, and it could shoot almost twice the (number) of shells that we could shoot,” Needham said. “You got to that (point where) you could hear the shells coming through the air.” “They had a shell called the ‘Screaming Mimi,’” Morell added. “It made so much noise coming in it would disrupt (our efforts).

That was the very beginning of the Battle of the Bulge.” The battle was also called the Battle of the Ardennes because it took place in the Ardennes forest region of Belgium, France and Luxembourg. During the Battle of the Bulge, which lasted from Dec. 16, 1944, through Jan. 16, 1945, the Army was assigned to cover a 27-mile front that was being attacked by German soldiers. The battle was a surprise attack on the Allies by the Germans, who created a “bulge” in the Allied front line. “A division normally covers a 5- or 6-mile front, but we were covering a 27mile front. Hitler surprised us, and we were not ready,” Morell explained. “They call it the Battle of the Bulge because Hitler

It was the first thing we heard at the beginning of the battle. We heard artillery, but nothing like this. It made a terrible noise. We had to pull ourselves together and keep shooting.” At one point in the battle, Needham got separated from Morell and the others and got lost with three other men in the forest of the Ardennes mountains. “It had snowed for a week, and the snow was up to our knees,” he recalled. “We (were freezing).” Eventually, the group made it back to safety. Morell and Needham, the latter of whom returned to his job at Lukens Steel in Coatesville, served until the end of the war because they were single. Married men with children were the first to be sent home. “ We were discharged by a point system. For a wife, you (received) five points. For kids, it was five points each,” Morell said. “We were young, single men who had to stay because we

The program will be offered this year on the campuses of Lycoming College or Pennsylvania College of Technology, both located in Williamsport. Lexy is attending the session offered from July 29 to Saturday, Aug. 4, on the campus of Lycoming College. raised turkeys, he noted. Hall continued in 4-H throughout his career at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown. “In the Pennsylvania 4-H youth program, you can (participate) from age 8 to 18. I continued into my freshman year of college, he recalled. “Then, once I aged out, I started a collegiate chapter. It is very different from a traditional 4-H Club because we don’t carry a project; it was more service-based. Prior to joining the Chester County staff, Hall was a 4-H youth development educator in the Penn State Extension of Cumberland County office and he served as the deputy communications director, as well as acting communications director, during his tenure at the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. In his new role, Hall joins extension educator Toni Stuetz to provide educational programs

and activities for youths throughout Chester County. “The opportunity to work with 4-H in Chester County aligns with my animal science background and it aligns closely with what I enjoy in the program, he stated. “A lot of the program areas I will handle will be the livestock and equine programs. Just like Toni, I will put together camps for the public to come to and for 4-H members. Hall recently toured the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook for the first time. The 4-H Center includes an outdoor riding ring with a full course of jumps, as well as a pole building. The main building has a large conference area, with restrooms and showers. “It was my first opportunity to see the property, he said. “It illustrates the dedication people have to the 4-H program in Chester County.

The public is invited to meet Hall and other staff members from the extension office in Chester County during an open house at the Chester County 4-H Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. The fair will be held at the Romano 4-H Center, 1841 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. Hall, who is finalizing plans for the fair with other staff members, said that so far it has been an easy transition from Cumberland County 4-H to Chester County 4-H. “Part of my degree was to be a student-teacher, so I was a student-teacher for four to five months, he said. “I taught all the ag classes at Octorara High School, so in a way I’m coming back to Chester County. For more information about Penn State Extension and its 4-H program in Chester County, readers may visit www.exten sion.psu.edu/chester or contact the office at 610-696-3500.

The Chester County commissioners and the director of the county’s Department of Children Youth & Families (CYF) have announced the statewide recognition of CYF staff members for their efforts to place children eligible for adoption into permanent loving homes. At this year’s Pennsylvania Department of Human Services Adoption and Permanency Conference, Shadell Quinones, manager of the CYF Adoption Unit, was awarded Permanency Professional of the Year for her commitment to finding permanent homes for children through

adoption. Quinones has been a part of Chester County’s CYF team for 18 years. In addition to adoption and post-adoption support, she heads the National Adoption Day program for the county every year. CYF supervisor Kristin Terrell and caseworker Briana Stinson were part of a group that was awarded the Permanency Teamwork recognition for their collaborative effort to promote permanent homes for children with special needs. The Wild Hymns will take the stage on Sunday, Aug. 5, at 5:30 p.m. as part of the free Honey Brook Borough Summer Concert Series. The concert will take place in the borough park and is open to the public. In lieu of an admission fee, attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items for donation to the Honey Brook Food Pantry. There will be a collection bin at each of the concerts this summer. The Wild Hymns, from the York area, perform the original songs of lead singer Megan Woodland Hewitt, who also plays the guitar. Also featured in the band are Megan’s husband, Jeff Hewitt, who plays lead guitar; Alex White on drums; Robert Shuckle on keyboards; and Cindy David, who plays bass and sings harmony vocals.
