Rotary Club Builds Gaga Court At The POINT By Francine Fulton
As part of an ongoing effort to complete service projects that benefit the community, members of the Rotary Club of Thorndale-Downingtown volunteered their time on Aug. 10 to create a gaga ball court at The Parkesburg POINT youth center. A group of 10 volunteers constructed the octagon-shaped court, which is used to play gaga, a gentler form of dodgeball. During the game, players hit the ball, using just their hands, at or below their opponents’ knees to eliminate them from the game. The last one left is the winner. The club previously completed gaga ball courts at East Ward Elementary School

Samuels is friends with Bud Herman, facilities manager at The POINT. “There is an organization where you get blueprints and they send you yellow metal pieces (to frame the court) and they tell you how much wood you need and the lengths,” explained Rotary president Elva Wright. “Jack Hines, a woodworker, bought the wood and made sure it was seasoned.” The volunteers constructed the gaga ball court in a field next to The POINT, but it will eventually be moved when the facility’s parking lot is competed. “It See Rotary Club pg 6

Supporting healthy young hearts was the goal of the ninth annual 5K for Aidan J. held recently in Kerr Park by the Aidan’s Heart Foundation. State Sen. Andy Dinniman, who has been a supporter of the organization since its inception, was on hand to recognize the group for its work and discuss legislation in Harrisburg. The nonprofit organization was cofounded by Christy Silva in 2010 after she lost her young son, Aidan, to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Since then, the group

Glen Moore United Methodist Church (UMC) celebrated Heritage Sunday on July 28. The event was a look back over the 146 years since the cornerstone of the building was laid. The church is part of the historic district of the Village of Glenmoore, once known as Moorestown. On Heritage Sunday, a number of historic items were displayed in the community room, including lectionary Bibles from the past century, hymnals from as early as 1900, membership rolls, and a photo book of items donated over the years by various members.

At a meeting of the board of trustees of the Springton Methodist Episcopal Church held on May 10, 1871, the president pro tempore, J.S. Parker, stated that the business at hand was to purchase a site for a new church building. A plot of three and one-half acres belonging to Lucien Hoguett was purchased. The building’s cornerstone was laid on July 25, 1873, and the building was dedicated on Dec. 28, 1873. Current members include families whose ancestors were members of the original congregation. The history of Methodism in the United States dates back to the mid-18th century with the ministries of early Methodist preachers, among them Robert Strawbridge. Following the American Revolution, John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, sent Thomas Coke to the U.S., where he and Francis Asbury founded the Methodist Episcopal Church. In the early 20th century, many of the splintered Methodist groups joined together to form the Methodist Church (USA). In 1968, the Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren to form the United Methodist Church. The Glen Moore cemetery is a lesson in

That brings the total number of students in Downingtown trained by the foundation in hands-only CPR and the use of AEDs to 5,000. The Veterans Memorial Garden on the front lawn of the church also preserves the memory of members who served their country. The church office frequently gets calls from people who have tracked their ancestry back to the site and who are seeking information from cemetery sexton John Miller. The Chester County Adult Tutoring Program is seeking volunteers willing to give their time to help adults who are working on their English language, reading, writing and math skills and more. According to Mimi Burstein, assistant coordinator, the program is a partnership between the Chester County Library and Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC), a nonprofit organization headquartered in Coatesville. The OIC serves Chester County residents by providing free adult basic literacy education, life skills and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs that are designed to prepare individuals for employment and economic self-sufficiency. The OIC is funded entirely by grants and fundraising dollars.

Junior Firefighters from pg 1 Last school year, the Chester County Intermediate Unit’s Technical College High School (TCHS) students created a new advertising campaign to convince their classmates to join their local Chester County fire station as junior volunteer firefighters. This fall, the fruits of their labor will finally be on display. As part of its ongoing www.HelpFightFire.com volunteer recruitment campaign, the Chester County Fire Chiefs Association began collaborating with TCHS Brandywine Campus and TCHS Pickering Campus in September 2018. The goal of the project was for students to help develop marketing materials specifically focused on recruiting high school students across the county to become volunteer junior firefighters. Students created a branded logo and tagline, along with recruitment posters, and they edited together two one-minute public service announcements focusing on the need for junior volunteer firefighters and the benefits of serving the community in this way. Students in teacher Troy Campbell’s commercial and graphic arts class at TCHS Brandywine began by working with representatives from The Communication Solutions Group, the public relations and marketing agency hired by the Chester County Fire Chiefs Association to facilitate the project. Students started developing a brand and tagline specifically to attract high school volunteers. They settled on “The desire to serve. The courage to act. Volunteer today. HelpFightFire.com.” Then, students were asked to create recruitment posters incorporating the new branded logo that would eventually hang in the hallways of schools across the county. Student submitted their concepts and had time to revise them based on the feedback they received. The top three designs were then submitted for final review to the Chester County Fire Chiefs Association, before a winning design was selected. This past spring, the recruitment project moved to teacher Sean Hicks’ digital media and sound communications class at TCHS Pickering. Hicks’ students were tasked with editing together footage and photos of Chester County junior volunteer firefighters at a training session. Students assembled two one-minute public service announcements, which included the branded logo and tagline. To view the videos, readers may visit www.tinyurl.com/yyb5z6e2 and www.tinyurl.com/yyv7qlap. The recruitment poster and two PSAs have since been distributed to Chester County high schools, along with an editorial piece highlighting the importance and benefits of becoming a junior volunteer firefighter. Chester County high school students will have a chance see these finished products when school starts again in the fall. The hope is that students across Chester County will be inspired by the work done by their classmates and take action to become
junior volunteer firefighters themselves. To become a volunteer firefighter or for more information, individuals may visit www.HelpFightFire.com.

Since a limited number of chairs will be available, attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating during the speaker presentations. A food vendor will be on-site. The rain/cloud date for StarFest 2019 is Sunday, Aug. 25. The tentative backup date for the event will be Saturday, Aug. 31, with a rain/cloud date of Sunday, Sept. 1. Cordivari hopes that the event will be a success, noting that last year’s event was rained out. “We were 0-4 last year,” he said. “We are hoping for clear skies this year.” Visit the club’s website or search for “Chesmont Astronomical Society observing+” on Facebook. There are also dried beans that are not locally grown but can easily be used with the fresh produce. There are recipes available that help provide shoppers with new meal ideas, along with recipe bundles that provide the ingredients to make that week’s featured dish. “Everything’s seasonal, so as the seasons change so will our produce. When we get to the fall, all of those leafy greens will come back; they just don’t like the heat,” Steinmetz said. “We also have a lot of really nice other things like the hot peppers and the carrots with the stalks attached.” The Fresh2You Mobile Market reaches every corner of Chester County. Rotary Club from pg 1 came together rather quickly; it took us about an hour to put together,” Wright noted. She said that the Rotarians were also given a tour of The POINT, which is a youth center open to boys and girls ages 8 to 18. The newly renovated facility offers a safe place where youths can enjoy games, video games and sports and also receive academic support. The facility includes a full-size gym, a kitchen, a dining area and offices. “I was so impressed with the campus when they gave us the tour, with the gym, the music room (and more),” said Wright. The club also recently held its annual canoe/kayak races at Kerr Park on the Fourth of July as part of Good Neighbor Day. The club also distributes dictionaries to thirdgrade students in the Dowingtown Area School District. The club sponsors the annual Chester County Mac and Cheese Cook-Off each spring in Kerr Park. During the event, individuals and restaurant owners compete against each other to create the best macaroni and cheese dish in the county. Proceeds are given to a local charity. Past recipients have included Alert Fire Company and the Chester County Hero Fund. A local artist also does a painting with a mac and cheese theme that is given away at the event with
proceeds going to the Lord’s Pantry of Downingtown. Each year, the club presents the Jay Edge Memorial Scholarship to a Coatesville Area High School senior. The fund was established to honor the memory of the club’s founder. The motto of Rotary is “Service Above Self.” “Each Rotary Club has a local emphasis and an international emphasis,” Wright stated. “We’re always looking for projects.” The first Rotary Club was founded in 1905 by Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer who wanted to form a club of business professionals who could work together and exchange ideas. Club members used to rotate their meeting locations, which is where the name originated. Today, Rotary is open to men and women from various professions. “(Local businesspeople) are a driving force, know what is going on in the community and how to get things done,” Wright said, noting that Rotarians pay an annual club fee. “Some are salespeople, so they get the sponsors; others are good event planners. Some are good at organizing things. Those are the skills we are looking for as Rotarians.” The Rotary Club of Thorndale-Downingtown meets every Friday from 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. at the Thorndale Craft House, 300 N. Bailey Road, Thorndale. Prospective members are invited to attend. For more information, readers may visit www.thorndalerotary.org.

Giant Launches Product Line For Children Giant Food Stores has announced the launch of a new private brand product line for children. Nature’s Promise Kids is an extension of the current Nature’s Promise line of “free-from” products, which includes many organic options. Select items are already in stores, with more launching over the next year at all 181 Giant, Martin’s Food Markets and Giant Heirloom Market stores. The new line builds on Nature’s Promise, a line of plant-based food products that contain only non-GMO ingredients, and many items are certified organic. The Nature’s Promise Kids line, designed for children age 4 and up, features products designed to be nutritionally equivalent or better than similar traditional products. Nature’s Promise Kids products do not include any synthetic colors, artificial flavors, artificial preservatives, sweeteners, MSG or
high-fructose corn syrup. In addition, Nature’s Promise Kids products contain no more than 500 mg of added sodium per serving; no more than 40% of calories from added sugar; no more than 10% of calories from saturated fat, except for nut, meat, poultry and dairy products; and one or more vitamins and/or minerals at 10% daily value or higher, if relevant to product category. The first two items to hit store shelves are Nature’s Promise Kids Sparkling Seltzer Water and Nature’s Promise Kids Squeezable Fruit Pouches. Giant will introduce additional Nature’s Promise Kids products, including apple slices, fruit snacks, cereal and more, over the next several months. Giant has committed to removing all synthetic colors, artificial flavors, artificial preservatives, sweeteners, MSG and high-fructose corn syrup from all private brand products by 2025.
