Siblings Earn Scouting’s Highest Awards By Francine Fulton

In June of 2009, the Community Courier featured an article about 9-year-old Amanda Wisk of Downingtown and her younger brother, Jonathan, 8, who sold rocks and toys to benefit the Smile Train, an organization that provides cleft palate surgery to children in need of the operation. Combining sales with other donations, they raised $250, the amount needed for one operation. Now, nine years later, the siblings have earned the highest awards in Scouting, the Boy Scout Eagle Award and the Girl Scout Gold Award. Paws For The Pantry To Benefit EBBC To Celebrate 175 Years Animal House Project Of Sharing The Good News By Francine Fulton

Paws for the Pantry, featuring a dog trail walk, dog races, food and music, will be held at the Downingtown Dog Park at Lloyd Park on Sunday, Sept. 23, from 4 to 6 p.m. An admission fee will be collected. For those who bring a donation of dog food or cat food, the fee will be waived. All proceeds will benefit the Animal House Project’s Chester County Pet Food Pantry. The first-time event is being planned and organized by Malaika Furtado, Maggie Murphy and Lais Santoro, seniors at the Downingtown STEM Academy. “ We will have a dog trail set up around Lloyd Park,” Lais explained. “We’re also going to have dog races based on size and give out ribbons.

There will be food and music, and it will be a good community event.” She added that participating dogs must be leashed and well-behaved and get along well with other animals. Animal House Project will set up a tent at the event, and Yoshi, the organization’s spokespuppy, will be on hand. Light refreshments and dog treats will be available for purchase. Lais added that people without pets are also welcome to attend. “They can come out, see some cute dogs and play with them, and it all benefits charity,” she said. Lais explained that completing a community service project is part of a requirement at the STEM Academy. “At STEM, we have to do a graduation project; it’s called a CAS project, (which stands for) creativity, activity and service,” she said, noting that projects can See Paws For The Pantry pg 5

Deputy Sheriff from pg 1 On duty at the recent Citadel Country Spirit USA concert in Ludwig’s Corner, Chester County Deputy Sheriff Matthew “Jamie” Mendenhall was giving Nero, his K-9 partner, some exercise when a man initiated a conversation about the importance of K-9s. The man subsequently introduced himself as Doug Paisley, the father of country superstar Brad Paisley, who was

to perform at the concert on Aug. 26. As the two continued their discussion, Mendenhall noted that two area K-9 handlers had lost their lives in the line of duty in recent years: Plymouth Township Police Officer Bradley Fox and Berks County Deputy Sheriff Kyle Pagerly. Mendenhall, who came to Chester County from the Berks County Sheriff’s Office, had supervised Kyle

610-932-7420 in the K-9 Unit there. Doug asked if Mendenhall could supply photos of the two fallen heroes so that his son could pay tribute to them during his performance. Further, he asked if Mendenhall wanted tickets to the concert. Mendenhall shared that Kyle and his wife, Alecia, were both huge fans of Brad. In fact, Kyle’s special song for his wife was Brad’s “She’s Everything.” Mendenhall then contacted Alecia to let her know that “Brad Paisley’s dad says hello” and to see if she wanted to come to the concert. Alecia arrived 15 minutes before Brad Paisley took the stage; it was the first time she had seen him live. He sang “When I Get Where I’m Going” in front of a giant projection showing Kyle and Fox and their respective K-9 partners, Jynx and Nick. The country icon also performed Kyle Pagerly’s anthem to his wife. According to Doug, that song was added and had not been on the original play list. Alecia also reconnected with Chester County Sgt. Paul Bryant Jr., who was also on duty at the music festival. She had not seen Bryant since the day her late husband graduated from the Philadelphia Police K-9 Academy, where the sergeant had previously worked. At the end of the event, Mendenhall was unable to leave the concert grounds because his vehicle was blocked by a school bus bearing the number 27, which was Kyle’s badge number. Siblings from pg 1 Coatesville Service Unit and a graduate of Coatesville Area Senior High School (CASH), completed her Gold Award in the spring of 2018. Her project, titled “The Art of Being Unique,” addresses issues associated with autism. “Being on the spectrum herself, Amanda thought it was important to educate her school and community (about) how they could work with autistic students to foster acceptance and inclusion,” said the siblings’ mother, Tammy Wisk. “Amanda created paper puzzle pieces, which she gave to her classmates to fill out with something that makes them unique.” She noted that some students depicted comic books or musical instruments, while others drew their favorite sports teams or foods. Amanda collected the pieces and used them to create four murals, which are on display at CASH. She also developed pamphlets with data on autism that were made available to students and staff members at CASH. Amanda had to present information about both the murals and the pamphlets

to the school board at its monthly public meeting. Tammy said this was a proud moment. “When the crowd heard about her acceptance to West Chester University and her plans to become an author/illustrator of children’s books for kids with autism, they gave her a standing ovation,” Tammy reported. Amanda is currently attending West Chester University (WCU), studying art and communications. “She wants to be that advocate who goes around to schools and tries to (promote) autism acceptance,” said Tammy. Jonathan, 17, officially earned the rank of Eagle Scout at his Board of Review on July 24. He is a member of Troop 2 in Downingtown in the Horseshoe Trail District, which is part of the Chester County Boy Scout Council. Since he joined Scouting in the fall of 2007 as a Tiger Cub in first grade, he has participated in Scouting for Food drives, popcorn sales, five pinewood derbies, camping trips and other outings, as well as the troop’s annual Easter flower sale. Jonathan earned numerous awards and recognitions over the years and held a number of leadership positions in Troop 2.

A senior at Bishop Shanahan High School in Downingtown, he is currently serving as junior assistant Scoutmaster. For his required Eagle Scout service project, Jonathan spent more than 120 hours installing benches on the grounds of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, where the family attends. He researched and then ordered maintenance-free, recycled plastic benches, raising the funds to buy the benches, gravel, cement, mulch and other needed materials. Jonathan then led a group of 15 volunteers, including Scouts, friends and adults, in the assembly and installation of two benches - anchored to cement pads - on each side of a path leading to a statue of the Holy Family. He purchased flowers from the troop’s Easter flower sale and placed them in large planters next to the benches, creating an area for meditation and prayer. Jonathan plans to attend a college in the Washington, D.C., area to dual-major in political science and computer analysis with a minor in psychology. He aspires to one day become an FBI agent. For example, there will be an equine basket with horse grooming items.

Pippin noted that 4-H youths will provide assistance at the auction, serving as runners and helping display items for auctioneer Bill McCauley. Food will also be available for purchase throughout the event, and offerings will include a dairy cart selling milkshakes and ice cream. “We will also have chicken sandwiches and pulled pork sandwiches and mac and cheese, Pippin said, noting that a diner in southern Chester County will prepare the food. There will also be a cash-and-carry table where people can purchase donated items directly to take home. “We started this last year for random items that did not fit into the live or silent auction, Pippin explained. “Last year we had a lot of antique items and some books. She noted that only cash will be accepted for food sales and for the cash-and-carry table. Bidders will be able to purchase auction items with cash or credit cards. Organizers are seeking donations for the auction. “We are asking for donations of any kind, said Pippin. “Past donations have included services, handmade items, antiques, gift certificates, farm products, collectibles, artwork, used and new equip-

Be the Glory. A family center, including a gym, Sunday school rooms and a kitchen, was completed in 1988. The present church building was dedicated on June 12, 2011. Remodeling and redecorating efforts have continued more recently. The 1968 cornerstone is on display in the current church building along with the original cornerstone from 1842. Throughout the years of new buildings, projects and renovations, the church’s motto has remained, “The Gospel Changes Everything. For more information about EBBC and the anniversary events, readers may visit www.ebbcpa.org or contact the church office at 610-269-8651. Those with old church photos or other memorabilia that can be displayed during the open house are asked to contact the church.

EBBC remains respectful of its history and has placed a plaque on the church grounds where the old church once stood. The plaque explains the history of the original church, stating, “The first East Brandywine Baptist Church, located on Route 322 near Corner Ketch-Lyndell Road, was built in 1842 under the pastorate of Rev. Thomas S. Griffith. Additionally, the plaque states, “Just to the east of the original church building, a circle of trees honors the ‘local boys’ who served in WWII. The center tree honors Clarence Krauss, who was killed in action. Near where the old church once stood is a cemetery where many of the church’s original members are buried. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new church building were held on Aug. 20, 1967. The cornerstone for this building, finished in 1968, is inscribed, “To God

worship service will be held at 10:45 a.m. when attendees will focus on the church from 1968 to the present. The senior choir will sing on both Sept. 30 and Oct. 7. According to a written history of the church, EBBC was originally known as the Brandywine Meeting House. The original 1.5 acres were purchased from the Kerlin family for $1. The church was planted by a 49-member delegation from Windsor Baptist Church in Eagle. EBBC still maintains a relationship with the congregation at Windsor Baptist through joint services. The initial church building survived a fire in 1856 and over the years underwent several renovations and dedications. The church purchased an additional 10 acres of land that surrounded the building in 1964. The original church building remained on the property until it was torn down in 1991.

The John Shrader Chapter 21 of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology invites the public to celebrate International Archaeology Day on Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Mouns Jones House in Morlatton Village, 31 Old Philadelphia Pike, Douglassville. The free program will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. In the case of rain, the program will take place on Saturday, Sept. 29. Attendees may tour the Mouns Jones site and participate in hands-on archaeology activities. Archaeologists will demonstrate sifting of dirt saved from the newly constructed handicapped-accessible sidewalks. The sifting may reveal Colonial American artifacts. Attendees who plan to participate should be prepared to get dirty and wear suitable clothing, bring gloves, and wear closed-toe shoes. The John Shrader Chapter 21 has been working at the Mouns Jones Site for seven years. The Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology was established in 1929. Its aims include promoting the study of the prehistoric and historic archaeological resources of Pennsylvania and neighboring states. Morlatton Village is owned and operated by the Historic Preservation Trust of Berks County. The village represents pieces of a Swedish settlement begun in the early 1700s, when Berks County was still the frontier. Structures constructed slightly later in the 1760s are also included in the village. For more information, readers may visit www.historicpreservationtrust.org.

PA CareerLink Office Expands Hours The PA CareerLink - Chester County office, 479 Thomas Jones Way, Suite 500, Exton, is offering expanded hours for customers on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month, effective Sept. 12. On these days, the center will remain open until 7 p.m. for access to services including the Welcome Center, workshops like CPR/AED certification and soft skills training, and events like job fairs, employer panels, seasonal hiring fairs, and the United Way Financial Stability Center budgeting workshop. In addition to job seeker information, workshops, and events, PA CareerLink Chester County offers job seekers and employers access to job training, education, and employment services. The organization’s Welcome Center provides an orientation service for customers to create a tailor-made assessment for basic career, individualized career, and employment support services. It also helps to determine program eligibility and career pathway plans for county residents. According to site administrator Walter Urban Jr., more than 18,600 visitors stopped by the center last year, with 2,300 attending workshops and 2,100 participating in the Welcome Center orientation service. Upcoming workshops and events, set for Wednesdays, include an Employer Panel for Job Seekers on Sept. 26, a Customer Service Job Fair on Oct. 10, a Seasonal Hiring Fair on Oct. 24, a Soft Skills Training Workshop on Nov. 1, and a United Way Financial Stability Center Budgeting Workshop on Nov. 28. For more information about the center’s programs and services, readers may visit www.pacareerlinkchesco.org or call 610-280-1010.

Solid Waste Authority Posts Recycling Update The Chester County Solid Waste Authority (SWA) reminds local residents of the “When in doubt, throw it out message that applies to recyclable materials and curbside collection programs. According to the SWA, overzealous recyclers may contaminate recyclables with trash, which ruins the ability to market the materials. Properly prepared and collected recyclables are valued commodities sold on the global market. However, when too many nonrecyclables are mixed in with the recyclable material, it all becomes trash because it is too costly to separate and requires disposal at a landfill. This results in more money being spent on collecting, transportating, and processing material that was not worth

collecting in the first place. Material such as hangers, scrap metal, pieces of rope or hose, pieces of wood, yard waste, and children’s toys are just a few of the items that contaminate recyclables. Scrap metal may be taken to a scrap dealer, yard waste should be composted, and children’s toys may be donated or thrown away if they are broken. These items, along with Styrofoam, polystyrene, and other foam materials, should not be placed in recycling bins. In addition, plastic bags present a problem because they are not recyclable in most curbside programs. The bags jam the source separating equipment at recycling facilities. Therefore, plastic shopping bags should be returned to a local grocery store, where

recycling containers for the bags are typically located at the entrance of the store. Most curbside recycling programs in Chester County collect mixed paper, flattened corrugated cardboard cut down to 18 by 24 inches, glass bottles and jars, steel and aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and containers with recycling numbers of 1 through 5, as well as 7. SWA programs also collect clean aluminum foil, pie tins, and empty steel aerosol cans. Only plastic containers and bottles with recycling symbols can be recycled. If there is no recycling symbol, it should be thrown away. For more information, readers may contact their local hauler or municipal recycling coordinator or visit www.chestercountyswa.org.

Animal Rescue Benefits From Event LaMancha Animal Rescue in Unionville recently received a donation of $2,460 as a result of an event conceived and managed by a Pennsylvania College of Technology student. Victoria A. Sosar of Berwick is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a focus on sport and event management. As part of an internship this summer with Beale Manor in Parkesburg, a special events venue in Chester County, Sosar was given the opportunity to plan and hold an event of her own. Sosar planned a Sip and Drool Festival to benefit LaMancha Animal Rescue in Unionville. The family-friendly event included activities for both children and pets. Sosar also lined up several food vendors, 20 craft and product vendors, a variety of gift baskets that were given out as prizes, musical entertainment and a special presentation by the Chester County K-9 Unit. The event not only raised funds for

LaMancha Animal Rescue, but also promoted pet adoption. The animal rescue brought adoptable dogs to the event, and four LaMancha dogs were adopted as a result of the festival. Sosar’s planning began well before her summer internship officially commenced in May. She sought vendors, a disc jockey, and other entertainment. She also developed a logo and began a Facebook campaign months before the July 14 event. During the spring semester, when she began formulating her plans, Sosar was enrolled in a Professional Event Planning course taught by chef Frank M. Suchwala, associate professor of hospitality management/culinary arts. The course teaches students to manage successful events, beginning with comprehensive planning that encompasses resources, site specifications and audience accommodations. LaMancha rescues and finds homes for

horses, dogs, cats, goats and the occasional exotic animal. More information is available at www.lamanchaanimalrescue.org.

An officer from the Chester County K-9 Unit provided a demonstration during the Sip and Drool Festival, an event created and managed by Penn College student Victoria A. Sosar as part of an internship at Beale Manor in Parkesburg.

Women Invited To Neighbors Caring And Sharing For more than 30 years, women have enjoyed getting together for prayer, fellowship and a speaker or program as part of Neighbors Caring and Sharing, a group that meets weekly at Conestoga Mennonite Church in Morgantown. Although attendance has expanded from just church members to women from the community, the objective of promoting friendship has remained the same. “We welcome everyone who is looking for a place to connect with Christian women and wants to make new friends,” said program chair Tina Essick. “A lot of people come to the group who might be new to the area, and it helps in that way, too.” Neighbors Caring and Sharing will begin its 32nd year on Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 9:15 to 11 a.m. The theme of the meeting will be “Caramels - Oh So Sweet,” and it will feature homemade baked goods and a presentation titled “Sweet Talk” by guest speaker Cindy Petersheim. “We’re going to bake a couple of desserts and snacks with caramel,” Essick explained, noting that the dishes will include caramel apple bundt cake and German chocolate cake with caramel, which will be served with ice cream. Meetings will continue each Tuesday from 9:15 to 11 a.m.

through April 16, 2019, with a break during the Christmas holiday. There will also be two outings scheduled by the group in May and June of next year. Each meeting begins with refreshments and a prayer time, followed by a guest speaker. “We are going to try a different format this year,” Essick noted. “In the beginning of the morning there will be more social time - a time allotted for fellowship, so the ladies get to know each other and enrich their friendships.” Child care is provided for infants through kindergarten-age children. While their moms are at the meeting, children enjoy stories, crafts and age-appropriate activities under the supervision of a teacher. Snacks are provided. All programs and child care are offered free of charge, but donations are welcome. When a craft is the focus of the meeting, registration is required, and a small fee is charged to cover the cost of supplies. Essick said that the calendar of events this year features a host of new guest speakers. “On Oct. 9, there will be a program by North Star Initiative that will be about women who are trying to get out of human trafficking and get back to normal society,” she said. On Nov. 6, Jeff Leath from Global Aid Network (GAiN) in Lancaster County will be the presenter. Attendees will be asked

to bring in bars of soap that will be used by the organization to create care packages. In lieu of a meeting on Dec. 4, Carrie Warner will perform a Christmas concert in the church sanctuary. A new program, “My Favorite Things,” will be presented on Jan. 15, 2019. “You bring three favorite things (valued) under $5 each to share with the group,” Essick explained, noting that the items will be given out through a random drawing. “I think it will be fun. And we will sing the song from ‘The Sound of Music.’” The Neighbors’ planning committee includes Sue Sutter, Norma Denlinger and Beth Random. “Beth will also be a speaker for us again on Nov. 13,” Essick noted. The title of Random’s talk will be “The Gift of Gratitude Colossians 2:6-7.” Two final outings are planned after the regular meetings have concluded. On May 14, 2019, the group will carpool to the Welkinweir estate in Pottstown. The final outing will be on June 18, 2019, when the ladies will meet for lunch at Historic Poole Forge in Narvon. Conestoga Mennonite Church is located at 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown.
