“Run For The Woods” from pg 1 In addition to the 5K “Run for the Woods,” which will start at 9 a.m., the event will include a 1-mile walk that will start at 9:15 a.m. “We are calling it a fun walk. (People can) bring their dogs, kids and kids in strollers,” said township supervisor Barbara D’Angelo, Trust president. “We will not only have water for the walkers, but we’ll have water for dogs and treats for humans and dogs when they are done. A lot of people walk their dogs in the parks and trails in Wallace Township. Making dogs a part of this will be fun.” All participants will receive an event T-shirt while supplies last. The 5K will be professionally timed, and medals will be awarded to the overall male and female winners of the 5K, as well as the first-, second- and third-place male and female 5K finishers of

the 5K in various age groups. There will also be first-, secondand third-place awards for firefighters who are wearing gear. “We have special ribbons for them,” said D’Angelo. Proceeds from the registration fees will benefit the Wallace Trust, an all-volunteer group that is funded entirely by private donations. “The Wallace Trust was formed in order to hold easements on open space,” explained D’Angelo. “People own property, and we hold the easements on parkland and on property that has trails on it. We are part of the township’s plan of protecting open space.” The idea to incorporate a firefighter’s fitness challenge was conceived in 2018 by D’Angelo and Andy Chambers, GMFC assistant fire chief, who promotes physical fitness at the fire company. Township Building, 2264 Strasburg Road, Coatesville, during the month of October. David’s Drive 831 was created in memory of David Turner Jr., who was born and raised in East Fallowfield Township. David worked at the Coatesville VA, where he learned that many of the veterans he served did not have necessities like underwear and socks. David wanted to buy every veteran at the VA a pair of underwear, but he never had the chance. On Dec. 16, 2009, David died at the age of 20 of a suspected heart arrhythmia. In 2010, family and friends of David created a nonprofit organization to fulfill his dream to support veterans. More information about David’s Drive is available at www.davids drive831.org and www.facebook.com/ davids.drive. We even provide a quiet place where they can get calmed down.” She said an added benefit of the event is that parents are able to talk with one another about their children and share their concerns and ideas. “That is a nice benefit that we are glad to see grow. (Parents of children with special needs) feel so isolated and they come to this and they learn that other people struggle with the same things,” Darnall stated. “They can share resources and network with other families and see that (they are) not alone.” Following the event, the church often hears from families whose children have enjoyed the day. “We have wonderful stories of kids and families. It is a blessing and so exciting,” Darnall said. “Much prayer goes into this, and we are always blessed when it all works out.” Sensory Play Day will take

The Forks of the Brandywine Evangelical Presbyterian Church will host its annual Sensory Play Day, which is free and open to children and youths with special needs and their families, on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. All activities will take place at the church’s ballfield, located at 655 Hibernia Road, Glenmoore, just off Route 322. Activities will be offered for children age 2 and up, as well as teenagers. Featured will be a climbing wall, pony rides and hayrides, face painting, team games and crafts. There will be live animals on hand, including sheep and a pony. “Mr. Spaghetti will sing. People will probably remember him from last year,” said Julie Darnall, one of the event organizers, noting that this is the 11th year for the event. “There will be a music tent with Marian Gans and her harps.” Children will also have an opportunity to try out various musical instruments. Free lunch will be provided, and there will be some glutenfree items available. If children

have specific dietary needs, families are invited to bring their own lunches to the event. Snacks and beverages will be provided throughout the day. New this year will be a duck pond where families may “purchase” a rubber duck. “People will be able to sponsor a duck and if their duck is pulled from the pond, they will win a prize,” Darnall said, noting that the duck pond event will take place at lunchtime. The day is open to children with physical and mental challenges, giving them an opportunity to enjoy activities with their siblings and other children from the community. Last year, more than 75 people participated. “We already have registered 100 people for this year; about 25 families have signed up,” Darnall noted. Parents must accompany and supervise their children during the day. Families are encouraged to bring other caregivers, relatives or friends to give them emotional and behavioral support. Darnall said that the day has become a tradition for many local families that have children with disabilities. “It is a safe

doctors that the lump was a blocked milk duct. “She was nursing at the time, and the doctors said it was going to go away,” said Jacquelyn. “She was misdiagnosed.” Megan’s pain continued to increase to the point of being unable to lift her son. She returned to the doctor weeks later and was directed to a breast care clinic where she had a mammogram, ultrasound, and biopsy completed within the week. She was diagnosed with a pregnancyrelated breast cancer five days after her 30th birthday. Inspired by the sense of support she received from her community and other women battling cancer as she began undergoing treatment, Megan wanted to start an organization with the goal of creating awareness, donating toward research, and supporting others battling breast cancer. Megan and Jacquelyn established Thrive and Grit in 2017 with a mission of pushing people to thrive under extraordinary circumstances with grit and perseverance. “She really wanted other people to hear her story,” said Jacquelyn. “Just because you’re young doesn’t mean it can’t happen, and there definitely needs to be that awareness. Be your own advocate and push for testing if something isn’t right.” Thrive and Grit kicked off its

efforts with a Pups in Pink event at Lancaster’s Buchanan Park in 2017 and started Megan’s Fund at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute in Lancaster to financially support women under the age of 40 by helping to pay for mammograms, ultrasounds, genetic screening, early detection tools, and more. Jacquelyn noted that oftentimes insurance companies require women to be 40 years or older to qualify for assistance, and Thrive and Grit aims to fill that gap. On Nov. 13, 2018, Megan passed away at age 31. “Through everything she never lost faith. She had such strong faith, and that was her rock through everything,” said Jacquelyn, who is continuing the work of Thrive and Grit. Megan embodied kindness and had wanted to host a catered meal for the doctors and nurses at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute to thank them for the wonderful care she received. Her family and Thrive and Grit were able to make her idea a reality last December, and Jacquelyn hopes to repeat that event in the future. Pink Packages are another signature effort of Thrive and Grit. Jacquelyn and other volunteers create and deliver uplifting boxes filled with gift cards for cleaning services and meal deliveries and other helpful items and goodies to assist women of all ages going through breast cancer treatment. “Sometimes you’re in there for hours and you just need something to eat or something encouraging,” noted Jacquelyn. Thrive and Grit also donates to metastatic (stage four) breast cancer research at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, a cutting-edge research hospital Megan traveled to. “She really wanted us to continue (Thrive and Grit), and it is healing to keep it going,” reflected Jacquelyn. “She wanted to help people and tell her story. If we can help just one person (by sharing Megan’s story), it’s worth it.” To learn more about supporting the mission of Thrive and Grit, readers may visit www.thriveandgrit.org.

Crew members sail the ship on Marsh Creek Lake each year, and they also make appearances at various festivals and events throughout the year, including the Scandinavian Folk Festival at Jamestown Community College in Jamestown, N.Y., held this year on July 18. On that day, the crew sailed on Lake Chautauqua, launching from Long Point State Park. LEVS members also bring the ship and present educational programs at elementary schools in the Downingtown Area School District. Presenters are dressed in authentic Vikingstyle clothing and display various artifacts. Most recently the crew visited fifth-graders at Brandywine Wallace, Pickering Valley and West Bradford elementary schools, with plans to also make an appearance at Lionville Elementary School. “(The students) love it. They asked a lot of very good questions,” Lindstrom said, noting that the crew also did a presentation at York College of Pennsylvania last November. For more information about the ship and LEVS, readers may visit www.facebook.com/ LEVS.Norseman or email Lindstrom at proudvikinglady @msn.com. The event at Marsh Creek Lake will be held rain or shine, unless there is a downpour or high winds. “If there is a storm or it’s really raining, it will be a ‘no go,’” Lindstrom said. “But if it’s a little iffy, we’ll be good. At noon, there will be introductions of honored guests, as well as the reading of a proclamation from the president of the United States and the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” LEVS highlights a different Scandinavian country each year. Since this year’s honored country is Sweden, its national anthem will also be played. At the conclusion of the ceremony, a wreath will be dedicated in honor of the life and accomplishments of Leif Ericson. Visitors will be invited to take a closer look at the Norseman in the water and talk with the crew. LEVS, a Chester Countybased nonprofit, is a living history educational organization that was formed to educate people about Leif Ericson and the Viking people, who were merchants, navigators, shipbuilders, artists and warriors. The group also owns and sails the Norseman, which is modeled after the ninth-century Viking Gokstad ship, to re-create the experience of traveling on water as the Vikings did 1,000 years ago. LEVS also aims to educate Americans about Leif Ericson as the first European known to have discovered and settled on the North American continent. Heritage Day Art Show Slated Charlestown United Methodist Church and the Charlestown Historical Society are co-sponsoring the Charlestown Heritage Day Art Show, displaying works from past and present Charlestown area artists, on Sunday, Oct. 13, from 2 to 5 p.m. The artworks will be on display at the church in Charlestown village and also at historic Charlestown Woolen Mill across the valley. As visitors travel between these two venues, they will enjoy self-guided walking tours of the village, as well as the beauty of the autumn countryside. Light refreshments will also be served. Among works of other past artists, the church will feature Henry Soulen, a former village resident and church member. As an illustrator for Curtis Publishing in Philadelphia, his work was frequently published in the likes of Saturday Evening Post, Ladies Home Journal and Country Gentleman magazines. He also illustrated several articles about archaeological digs in the Middle

East in National Geographic. One of the highlights of the art show will be his art-deco and bas relief style “Madonna and Child,” published in Ladies Home Journal in January 1937. At the art show, visitors will see the work itself, a copy of the published magazine and the original mold that Soulen constructed to cast the work. Attendees will be able to trace the work from start through finish. The show will also include works by other deceased artists such as Milo Winter, Lucius Crowell, John Pierce and Geraldine Berg. Finally, living artists will display their works, and many of them will be present to talk about and answer questions, even though nothing will be sold that day. Charlestown United Methodist Church was founded in 1830 and is located in historic Charlestown Village at 650 Church Road, Malvern. For details, readers may email charlestown.umc@ gmail.com.

Environmental And Energy Advisory Board Established

PUBLIC AUCTION

The Chester County commissioners presented plans for the county’s new Environmental and Energy Advisory Board on Sept. 20. The plans were presented when the commissioners spoke to an audience of municipal representatives at the county’s annual stormwater management conference. The commissioners approved a resolution to establish the advisory board at a recent public meeting, with the goal of creating a Climate Action Plan for Chester County. The Environmental and Energy Advisory Board will enhance the county’s commitment to preservation and protection of the environment and focus on the balance, interplay, and impact of energy related initiatives and issues. Commissioners chair Michelle Kichline noted that efforts are already underway to protect the environment and preserve energy. These efforts include a 15-year energy performance contract with energy service company Constellation that is implementing water and energy conservation measures within county facilities that are projected to save millions of dollars and help the county reach its environmental goals. A second initiative is an agreement with C-PACE, a clean energy financing program for commercial properties that supports family-sustained jobs and the Chester County business community and aims to improve the sustainability of the county’s built environments. According to the commissioners, Chester County was the first county in the region to sign on with C-PACE. Last year’s Chester County Citizen Survey revealed that county residents ranked “maintaining the quality of our water” as their No. 1 issue. Additionally, two goal areas of Landscapes3, Chester County’s comprehensive plan, focus on preserving and protecting the

environment. Kichline also noted the comprehensive plan also indicates the need for a resilient and clean energy network. Commissioner Kathi Cozzone said the advisory board will use the comprehensive plan for guidance. The Environmental and Energy Advisory Board will provide both reviews and recommendations to the commissioners and county departments. These activities will include recommending best environmental and energy practices in the areas of buildings, facilities, and operations; fuels, vehicles, and transportation; food; responsible purchasing; housing; energy sources; air quality; stormwater management; natural resource protection; and climate change. Further reviews and recommendations include identifying environmental and energy policies that the county has adopted and recommending ways to promote and educate about Chester County’s environmental and energy initiatives; identifying and recommending voluntary actions, projects, and programs for municipalities, businesses, nonprofits, and other partners to implement county environmental and energy policies; reviewing and providing input into a Climate Action Plan; and recommending environmental- and energyrelated actions, projects, and programs to the commissioners for implementation. The board will also review and advise on making strides toward the Sierra Club’s “Ready for 100” initiative, the national movement to achieve 100 percent clean, renewable, and just energy across the U.S. by the year 2050. The creation of the Climate Action Plan will be one of the board’s first tasks. The county is working on this project with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and

its contractor, ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability. The Chester County Planning Commission also will receive assistance from Dr. Kathleen Schreiber’s Environmental Impact Assessment class at Millersville University. The greenhouse gas inventory portion will be completed in the fall with the Climate Action Plan development next spring. In addition to the Climate Action Plan, the Environmental and Energy Advisory Board will recommend ways the county can commemorate April 22, 2020, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. The board will consist of Chester County residents along with representatives of businesses, energy initiatives,

municipalities, land conservancies, utility companies, and county departments. The term of each of the board members will be two years, except that, when the board is first created, half of the members shall be appointed for three years and half for two years. The Chester County commissioners will accept resumes and cover letters from people who are interested in being considered for a position on the board. Materials may be sent to deputy county administrator Kara Rahn at krahn@chesco.org by Friday, Oct. 18. The commissioners will review the applications before making appointment recommendations.

State Sen. Andy Dinniman recently met with representatives from Search and Rescue Dogs of Pennsylvania, a Chester Countybased nonprofit organization that assists local and state law enforcement in responding to the recovery of lost or missing persons. The organization, now in its 29th year, also provides highly trained search and rescue dogs and handlers to voluntarily assist in a variety of searches and services, including disaster recovery, evidence searches, recovery of human remains, vehicle searches, wilderness and urban trailing, search management, water searches, and searches in the wake of a disaster, fire or building collapse. All services are provided free of charge. Founded by Vicki and Chuck Wooters of East Goshen, Search and Rescue Dogs of Pennsylvania has supported the successful recovery of numerous searches and ultimately saved the lives of missing, injured, emotionally distressed, and disoriented individuals and children. Over nearly three decades, the group has assisted in searches throughout Pennsylvania and as far as Idaho, Colorado, and Canada. Currently, Search and Rescue Dogs of Pennsylvania is supported by a core staff of four volunteers and five dogs. While Wooters said that any dog can be trained to search, her team consists of German shepherds. The dogs are obtained by the group through purchase or donation and trained for two to three years before they become operational. Each dog specializes in certain types of searches or purposes. Some dogs are trained in multiple purposes or tasks. The dogs live and work with Wooters and, upon retirement, usually at about age 10, live out the rest of their days as family pets. Wooters recounted the many dogs the group has trained over the years and how hundreds of deployments have resulted in dozens of “live finds,” in which missing persons were located and brought to safety. In addition, the location of crucial evidence has helped bring criminals to justice and the recovery of human remains has brought some sense of closure to victims’ families. Wooters and her team are also working with Dinniman to develop state standards to guide the estimated 50 search and rescue dog groups operating in the commonwealth. While Wooters and Search and Rescue Dogs of Pennsylvania have amassed dozens of credentials and certifications over the years, there are no uniform state standards. Dinniman said that he and his staff are currently looking at laws in place in other states, like Virginia, to guide the process and will reach out to additional partners in the search and rescue dog community for input.
