Community Youths Host Benefit Event Youths from the Bell Tavern community in Downingtown hosted their second annual fundraising event, Olympics for Little Hearts, on Sept. 29. Approximately 30 children planned, promoted, and volunteered, raising $4,000 for local nonprofit Chester County Futures through ticket sales, donations, and sponsorships. The event was held at East Ward Elementary School in Downingtown. It featured food and field day-style games. The children wanted to continue the tradition they started last year when they raised $2,000 for UNICEF. This year they sought out an organization working closer to home. The goal was to not only collect donations, but also to bring the community together and raise awareness for Chester County Futures. Chester County Futures is an independent organization providing academic, mentoring and scholarship support for motivated, economically disadvantaged Chester County students in middle through postsecondary school. YMCA Expands Youth And Government Program

“Surviving The Holidays” Program Planned

The YMCA of Greater Brandywine, an association of eight YMCAs across Chester County, is expanding its Youth and Government program this fall. The Youth and Government program aims to help young people in grades seven through 12 develop into strong citizens who are both knowledgeable and active in determining the future of their democracy. Students learn about the democratic system while being trained in parliamentary procedure, legislative committee process, debate, press relations and lobbying techniques. During the program, teenagers discuss and debate issues that affect citizens of their state, and they propose possible legislation to make government more efficient. Students then craft their own bills and serve as student delegates at the annual Youth and Government Model Convention, where they debate their bills on the floor of the State Capitol in Harrisburg. Last year, students in the program wrote bills on mandating medical kits,

Students and a mentor meet after school at their local YMCA branch a couple of times per week to debate, discuss and learn how to write and introduce a bill into government. The program has been offered at the Brandywine

YMCA for the last two years. This year, Kennett Area YMCA, Lionville Community YMCA, Oscar Lasko YMCA and West Chester Area YMCA have added the program. Each program is limited to 12 students. Registration and a Model Convention fee are required. Financial assistance is available. For more information, readers may contact Chris Hutelmyer at chutelmyer@ymcagbw.org.

The program, which is open to adults and children over age 14, will include the showing of a video that will offer practical survival tips told by people who have gone through the holiday season after the death of a loved one. Topics to be discussed will include dealing with emotions, what to do about traditions, how to handle loneliness, how to sur-

When greeting members of DeFroscia’s family, Tindaro noted that although the morning of Oct. 13 was quite rainy, the sun began to shine at noon - the exact time of the ribbon cutting. “Tom, you are missed, and thank you for bringing the sun out,” she remarked. “To Tom’s family, thanks for lending him to us all for too short of a time. Patty, you and your family remain in our thoughts and prayers.” Patty thanked those in attendance at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “As I look around to those people who meant the most to Tom, it is such an honor,” she stated. She then read a poem, which stated, in part, “We cannot make more memories since he is no longer here, so when you speak of him to me, it’s music to my ears. The greatest gift you can

Fitness Test from pg 1 the deputies braved several inclines, offering each other encouragement in the process. Cpl. Joseph Woulfe, the fitness coordinator who oversees the challenge, said the routine was created by Chief Deputy Sheriff Jason Suydam. Initially, it represented the first step in the application process to join the Fugitive Apprehension Unit before it was opened up to all deputies. Woulfe explained that the test accomplishes more than just an assessment of physical prowess. It also measures teamwork, dedication, and determination, qualities that come in handy when deputies attempt to apprehend fleeing suspects or respond quickly to someone in distress. The instructors - Woulfe, Deputy Sheriff Steven Price, Deputy Sheriff Enrique Garcia, and Cpl. Daniel Strathy - took the test a week earlier so that they could oversee this year’s

Halloween Safety Tips Come Halloween, youngsters’ attentions are understandably focused on costumes and candy. Their parents, however, are likely more concerned with their children’s safety. Parents should discuss costumes well in advance of Halloween. Many children are so enthusiastic about Halloween that they know which costumes they hope to wear long before Halloween. Parents can discuss potential costumes well in advance of Halloween before children even know what they want to wear. Doing so gives parents a

chance to encourage children to choose bright costumes that will make them more visible to drivers on Halloween night. Waiting to discuss costumes increases the likelihood that children will already have an outfit in mind, making it harder for parents to convince them to choose something safe. Adults should explain that some tailoring might be necessary to make gathering all that candy a lot easier. Superman does not trip on his cape in the movies, and youngsters dressed up as the Man of Steel should not trip on their capes

Deputies who successfully complete the challenge receive pins to wear on their uniforms. In addition to the four instructors, the 2018 Superior Fitness Challenge pin recipients are Deputy Sheriff Joel Buccialia, Deputy Sheriff Michael Cabry, Deputy Sheriff Mario Dioguardi, Deputy Sheriff Peter Gardner, Deputy Sheriff Sean Marasco,

either. It should be explained to children that costumes should be trip-proof, so they can seamlessly go from house to house in search of their favorite goodies. Depending on what children will use to carry the candy they accumulate this Halloween, parents can plan a bag or bucket design day a few days in advance. Children will enjoy this chance to get in the Halloween spirit, and parents can encourage youngsters to decorate their bags and buckets with reflective tape that will make them more visible to drivers. As Halloween approaches, parents can discuss how much fun children will have going door-to-

door with many of their friends. This is a good way to ensure children trick-or-treat in large groups, making them more visible to drivers. In addition, children trickor-treating in large groups might be too busy joking with their friends to notice when one or two parents tag along as chaperones. Parents can discuss Halloween safety with their children in ways that make it fun to be safe while trick-or-treating.

An uncommon sight greeted early-bird commuters in downtown West Chester on Oct. 10: more than a dozen deputy sheriffs on the run. Receiving some illumination from a Sheriff ’s Office truck with its lights flashing, the group was in the final stage of the 2018 Superior Fitness Challenge. The challenge began at 5 a.m. with 100 pushups followed by 100 sit-ups. Afterward, the deputies donned 30 pounds of equipment, including large shields, before they each dragged a 150-pound dummy up and down a long hallway, jumped over a 5.5-foot wall, carried a battering ram about a block, and then ascended and descended a nine-story staircase while wearing weighted vests. The ordeal preceded a fiveminute break. By 6:45 a.m., the deputies started the finale, a 2.5mile formation run around the borough of West Chester. As drivers and pedestrians watched,

Disaster Relief Auction Held

Schoolhouse from pg 1 During the Oct. 12 field trip to the schoolhouse, the students were hosted by three members of the Uwchlan Township Historical Commission Teddi Wright, Elyse Jackson and Pat Gaines - who were dressed in period costume. The students were welcomed by Gaines, who rang a handbell and taught them the song “Good Morning.” Once inside, boys were instructed to sit on

the left of the classroom while girls sat on the right, the way it would have been when the school was in operation. “Just think, you are sitting in a schoolhouse just like children sat 150 years ago,” Wright told the students. “You are the only grade level in here now, but 150 years ago there were children of all ages and all grade levels in this one room and taught by one teacher.”

Kindergarten students from Great Beginnings Christian Preschool and Kindergarten had an opportunity to play with blocks under the supervision of Pat Gaines (back), a member of the Uwchlan Township Historical Commission, during the students’ visit to the Edith P. Moore School House in Lionville.

Wright then explained some of the school rules. “The first rule was the Golden Rule, ‘Treat others the way you would want to be treated,’” said Wright. “Rule No. 2 was to exercise good posture, sit up straight in your seat and (fold) your hands. Rule No. 3 was if the teacher would ask a question, you would raise your hand (to be recognized).” She noted that Rule No. 4 was for students to raise their hands when asking to be excused and Rule No. 5 was to not look out the windows during the school day. “The teacher believed that if you were not looking at her, you were not listening and you were not learning,” Wright added. Jackson then provided a brief history of the schoolhouse. Located at 9 N. Village Ave., Lionville, the school was established in 1859 and operated as a township school for 100 years. It is named for the teacher who taught there from 1929 to 1956. The one-room schoolhouse features an 1880 slate chalkboard, original books, desks with inkwells and a cast-iron stove like the one that would have been used to heat the room. There is also a schoolbell, but it is not the original one to the school. Jackson asked the kindergarten students to look around the room for things that were different from their own classrooms. Differences included the stove, quill pens and a blackboard with chalk. The schoolhouse had wooden floors and

Novel Halloween Costume Ideas Nothing says Halloween like the perfect costume. Children may spend months thinking about what they will wear and how they can bring their favorite characters from movies, comics, and books to life. Clever costumes can be made from items already on hand. Billions of dollars are spent each year on Halloween costumes, advises the National Retail Federation. Many of these costumes are worn just once. The

environmental group Recycle Nation states that Halloween costumes are often made with low-value materials like petroleum-based polyester and a mix of other materials. Financially savvy environmentalists may lament that Halloween costumes can be wasteful and potentially harmful to the environment. Recycling and reusing these garments can quell such concerns. Pinterest offers many ideas for turning different materials into

homemade Halloween costumes. With a little creativity, items like boxes, paper bags, plastic water bottles, and more can be upcycled into costumes at little or no cost. Afterward, costumes can be broken down, and individual parts can be recycled. Parents also can look for items around the house that potentially can be used to make costumes. no electricity, and the students noted that it did not include a playground. “Sometimes the students helped the teacher sweep the floor and clean the blackboards,” Jackson noted. Following the talk, students divided into groups and went to three learning centers. Gaines showed the students toys, including blocks, a rag doll and corn husk doll, while Jackson helped the students play games, including bean bag toss and jump rope. Wright led the students in a science lesson, explaining about tree leaves, pine cones, Osage oranges and nuts. To conclude the program, students ventured outside, where they learned to use the water pump and gathered twigs in baskets like students would have done when getting ready to start

a fire in the stove. Chuck Jackson, a member of the historical commission, was also in attendance to provide assistance. In addition, Sam Matthews, who accompanied his grandson on the field trip, actually attended the school when it was in operation; his teacher was Edith P. Moore. The schoolhouse, as well as the John Cadwalader House, 21 N. Village Ave., Lionville, are open to the public free of charge on the first Sunday of every month from April through November from 2 to 4 p.m. The final open house of the season will be on Nov. 4. For more information, readers may visit www.uwchlan.com/ 170/Historical-Commission or www.facebook.com/Uwchlan History.

The 42nd annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction, held at the Lebanon Expo and Fairgrounds on Sept. 21 and 22, concluded with an estimated preliminary total of $420,306. Some of the highlights include the following: a Landis Myers table that sold three times to bring in $4,000; two quilts, “Have a Little Faith” and “Diamond Lite,” were resold for a total of $7,200; a theme basket, “A House Divided,” sold for $560; a copper kettle sold for $400 and a Trek bike for $370 in the pole barn auction; two gold coins sold for $2,600 each in the coin auction; contributions and matching funds totaled $110,000; baked goods sales totaled $10,000; contributions and donations, including an earlier bequest, exceeded $110,000; matching funds totaled $25,000; quilt sales totaled $33,000; and food sales generated nearly $34,000. The auction, the largest of its type in the world, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $15 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year.

and holding a hammer can signify a construction worker. Another way to get more mileage out of costumes is to swap them with other people. This way another family can benefit, and the costume will not end up in the garbage after a single use. Parents can also consider turning the idea into a fundraiser for a school or sports organization. People can donate their costumes to the cause, and then others can shop the selection and pay a donation for a costume. The school or organization keeps the proceeds, and children get gently

used costumes. Petroleum-based Halloween costumes that go into landfills will sit there a long time. Choosing costumes made from natural materials can help prevent this problem. Clothing and textiles are notoriously hard to recycle, but some items on costumes may be recycled into new things. Theater groups perhaps can use pieces of old costumes to create wardrobes for their productions or children can use items for pretend play. Crafters with a creative eye may take apart pieces of costumes

and turn them into artwork or home decor. Parents can try selling a costume through an online site like Craigslist. Otherwise, a thrift store or consignment shop may be a good option. Costumes may bring in foot traffic for these retailers, and they will be happy to take costumes in good condition prior to the Halloween season. Accessories like tiaras, swords, hats, and cloaks also can be sold or swapped. Halloween costumes are easy to enjoy, and those who want to think a little greener can find new ways to get more use out of costumes.

A Safe And Fun Halloween

New Pastor from pg 1 By Francine Fulton

The congregation at Living God Lutheran Church (LGLC) in Honey Brook recently welcomed its new pastor, the Rev. Justin Nickel. Nickel is the first permanent pastor that the church has had in several years. The congregation was previously led by a series of interim pastors. “They are a remarkable group of people,” Nickel said of the church members. “In the four years without a steady pastor

not only did they survive, they thrived. They were adding members before I got here.” Nickel is a graduate of the University of Colorado and earned a Master of Divinity from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. He is completing his doctoral work at Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey. He and his wife, Mary, who reside in Thorndale, recently welcomed their son, Max, who is 7 weeks old. Nickel, who was a pastor for three years at a small church in

stick close to the assigned readings for the day,” he said. “The goal is that people walk away feeling like they encountered God’s love.” The church will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Sunday, Oct. 28. Bishop Patricia Davenport will preach at the service, which will be followed by a congregational meal. “The slogan back then was ‘A church for people without a church,’” said Nickel. “While we are Lutheran in our theological identity, I think it’s a place that is easy to come to even if you’ve never felt at home in a church.” Nickel noted that the church is a busy place. Country line dancing is offered on Sunday nights, and the church maintains a walking trail, which is popular with area residents. The church is also a meeting place for Alcoholics Anonymous. The new pastor encourages people to attend a Sunday service to see first-hand what the church has to offer. “A lot of people know us as the church with the walking trail,” he said. “We would love to invite the people who walk on the trail to come worship with us. Everyone is welcome. (The congregation members) are the friendliest group of people.” LGLC is located at 3200 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. when Halloween is done so it will not get in the eyes. Only safe cosmetic contact lenses should be purchased. Parents should speak with an eye professional to purchase colored or novelty lenses. Improperly controlled contact lenses can cause eye injuries like sensitivity to light and bacterial infections. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says decorative lenses purchased without a prescription may not fit properly, leaving eyes more susceptible to scratches on the outer layer of the eye. Decorative lenses also may contribute to ulcers, or open sores, on the cornea, which is the clear covering over the front of the eye. Discuss the safety of various lenses with your eye doctor and go over the proper handling of contact lenses. Children should be encouraged to trick-or-treat in daylight. Visibility is better during daylight hours, and sunlight makes youngsters less vulnerable to tripping over obstacles in their paths. Particularly for younger children, parents should avoid hard, plastic swords, staffs, and other objects that can poke the eyes or cause bodily injury. Parents are encouraged to opt for bendable foam choices instead. Children should be made to be as visible as possible. Parents can use reflective tape, glow sticks, and other tools to make children more visible to drivers and pedestrians.

Pictured on front:

Children’s eye health is just as important as other aspects of their physical and mental wellbeing. According to a recent report from the National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness, vision plays an important role in a child’s physical, cognitive, and social development, and visual functioning is a strong predictor of academic performance in school-aged children. While there are certain risk factors that can affect eye health, come the autumn, fall sports and Halloween are two areas where parents may have to extend extra caution to protect their children’s vision. Fortunately, there are many things parents can do to prevent visual and other injuries from affecting their children. A few simple precautionary measures can make this Halloween safe and fun. Parents should choose Halloween masks and accessories that do not impair the ability to see clearly and keep children’s vision unobstructed. Costumes that do not have masks, wigs, or accessories that impede the child’s ability to see should be chosen. Hats and scarves should be tied down, so they do not slip down over the eyes. Parents should exercise caution with cosmetics. Warnings on Halloween makeup should be read to see which products are safe to use on the face and around the eyes and which are not. Only hypoallergenic makeup should be used, and it should be removed carefully

the Denver, Colo., area, learned about LGLC while completing his doctoral work at Princeton. “We really liked it here, and I was interested in the church from the profile I was given at the bishop’s office. In the first interview, we clicked right away,” he recalled. “I think the people at this church really made the difference (in my choice). They are a kind and open-hearted group of folks.” Nickel explained that in the Lutheran denomination, churches are matched with pastors. “I first had to apply through the synod office, which is out of Philadelphia,” he said, noting that he applied to be pastor this past spring. On Aug. 19, he preached at LGLC and was named the pastor after a congregational vote. For the past several weeks, Nickel has been going out to visit congregation members in their homes. “The most immediate goal is for us to get to know one another,” he said. “I feel (visiting homes) is the best way to get to know people.” He has also visited the Tel Hai Retirement Community, where several congregants reside. Nickel plans to continue the programs already established at the church. “What is great about this place is that if people have an idea, they pursue it,” he said. He noted that the church is currently collecting supplies for Thanksgiving food boxes that will be distributed by Steeple to People. The Sunday service at LGLC, which includes a blend of contemporary and traditional hymns, is held at 9:30 a.m. The pastor’s sermon revolves around the Scriptural reading. “I try and

that would like to participate are asked contact Kristy Harper at inmotionkristy@hotmail.com. Finegan said the name “This Run’s Personal” refers to the fact that many participants run or walk to honor someone they know who is fighting cancer or to honor someone who has died. “When you register, there is a spot on the registration form to fill in the name of the loved one you are running for,” she explained, noting that the names are written on signs that line the entire course. “When you see all the signs, it is very moving,” she said. Team CMMD was founded by Dr. Christine Meyer in January of 2013. The name of the group reflects Meyer’s initials and credentials. In 2012, Meyer, who found that many patients in her practice were suffering from cancer, and some friends took part in the Broad Street Run in Philadelphia to raise money for the American Cancer Society (ACS). That first year, Team CMMD raised more than $67,000 for ACS and also formed a nonprofit foundation. “This year, we are well past the $1 million mark of funds raised for the American Cancer Society,” Finegan reported. Proceeds from the upcoming event will help local cancer Many participants in the CMMD Foundation’s “This Run’s Personal patients. “The monies we raise 5K” run in memory of or to honor a loved one. Individuals may also register on race day, but T-shirt quantities will be limited. New this year is that people may create a team of 10 people or more to walk or run in honor of a loved one. “This is an incentive for people who work together or go to church or school together,” Finegan explained, noting that high school track teams have participated in the past. Teams will be eligible to win prizes. The prize for the largest team will be a donation to the charity of its choice. Teams

Same-day registration will open at 7 a.m., and the 5K and 1mile walk will begin at 9 a.m. The 5K will be professionally timed, and prizes will be awarded for the top three overall male and female finishers, as well as top finishers in various age groups.
