Girl Scout To Host Dance Parties For Youths With Special Needs By Francine Fulton
Youths with special needs are invited to enjoy dance parties that will be held at Grove United Methodist Church, 490 W. Boot Road, West Chester. Dances will be held several times each month beginning on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, from 10 to 11 a.m. The dance parties, themed “Everybody In,” are being presented by Lizzy Stahelek, who is organizing the event as part of a service project in conjunction with pursuing the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award in Cadette Girl Scouting. Lizzy, 13, is a seventhgrade student at Peirce Middle School and a member of Girl Scout Troop 4297, which meets at the school. “It will be a relaxed event that all people with special needs can attend and enjoy. Kids with special needs can dance their own way and enjoy the music in their own way,” Lizzy said. “The kids will not have to follow dance steps; it will be a dance party.” Lizzy’s 9-year-old sister, Ally, who has special needs, was the inspiration for the project. “My sister
likes a lot of music,” Lizzy said, noting that the family had previously attended a dance class for special needs students. “It was mainly (learning) a routine, and some of the steps were harder to follow. (For these dances), we wanted people to just have a party.” The girls’ mother, Margaret Stahelek, explained, “There wasn’t a place for someone like our daughter, so Lizzy wanted to create something where everyone can participate. I think it will be really fun.” Lizzy began planning for the dance parties this past summer, which included scouting for a handicappedaccessible location. See Dance Parties pg 3

The goal of the program is to provide youngsters an opportunity to read in a nonthreatening and safe atmosphere.
A First Day Hike will be held on Jan. 1, 2019, at Marsh Creek State Park, Downingtown. Other local hikes will be also be held on New Year’s Day.

OIC Tutoring Program Seeks Volunteers rs Online Training Available By Francine Fulton
The Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) is currently seeking volunteers willing to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills through its adult tutoring program. No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. According to Debbie Rikess, who is the new adult tutoring program coordinator, there is a current waiting list of 22 people located throughout Chester County who are in need of volunteer
she said. Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. “We ask them to meet at public locations,” Rikess explained. “We have a lot of people from Exton, West Chester, Downingtown and Coatesville that like to meet at the Chester County Library in Exton. “It’s a great location for people to meet.” She said that most student/tutor pairs meet twice a week for an hour and a half each time. In the past, tutors were required to attend a training workshop held at the library in Exton. Now, the program offers online training for tutors. “We recently switched to online training

Henry’s Helping Paws Program, the initiative founded by state Sen. Andy Dinniman and his wife, Margo, to keep people and their pets together, is now delivering free dog and cat food, along with vital veterinary medical services, to more local senior citizens in need and their pets. Recently, Dinniman was joined by his rescue poodle, Jagger, and representatives from the Pennsylvania Veterinary Foundation (PVF) to make the first delivery of dog and cat food to the Coatesville Area Senior Center. Named for Henry, the Dinniman family’s standard poodle that died in December 2014, Henry’s Helping Paws Fund was launched in conjunction with Meals on Wheels of Chester County in 2016. Dinniman said he came up with the idea for a mobile food pantry when he heard about senior citizens and disabled residents on low or fixed incomes who are homebound and struggle to afford adequate food, pet care items, and veterinary medical services for their pets. According to Dinniman, besides keeping people and their pets together in their homes, the program also aims to take the burden off rescue organizations that are overwhelmed with surrendered

animals. Dr. Tom Garg of Hope Veterinary Specialists worked with Dinniman to develop the program and assists the PVF in running the program. Henry’s Helping Paws Program currently delivers pet food to several dozen senior citizens who are homebound or lack transportation. The program is administered by the PVF with the help of donations from PetSmart Charities. Last year, the program began deliveries of pet food and care items to the Phoenixville Senior Center to meet the need of local seniors in feeding and caring for their dogs and cats. Pet health care events are scheduled to take place in the 2019 in both Coatesville and Phoenixville. This year, Dinniman and PVF announced they are not only expanding Henry’s Helping Paws to serve additional senior centers in Chester County, but they are also expanding its scope to include health care vouchers that can be used at designated veterinary hospitals and mobile veterinary practices. Seniors in need, identified by the senior centers and/or Meals on Wheels, will be eligible to receive a voucher, valued at $250, to cover costs for their pet’s health care at Pennsylvania Veterinary Association designated hospitals. Participants whose pets require more extensive medical treatment can have their veterinarian request additional assistance from PVF’s Last Chance program. Pet food, care items, and veterinary services for Henry’s Helping Paws Fund are funded by private and corporate donors through the PVF, the charitable arm of the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association. Both Meals on Wheels and the senior centers distribute the food to the participants. In addition, representatives from local senior centers, senior housing facilities, and other nonprofits identify eligible homebound pet owners in need. The W hitford Charitable Fund Committee and representatives of 10 Chester County organizations attended a luncheon at the Whitford Country Club in November to celebrate the success of the eighth annual Whitford Classic Event in September. More than $130,000 was distributed to this year’s beneficiaries, which included Safe Harbor of Chester County, West Side Community Center, Uptown Entertainment, Lasata Farm, Coatesville Area Senior Center, CVIM: Smiles for Jackie, Downingtown Library, Phoenixville Area Children’s Learning Center, Great Valley Community Organization and North Star of Chester County. Whitford Country Club members gathered together on a weekend in September to raise funds at their event. A morning round robin tennis tournament for ladies kicked off the weekend. Among the other activities was the Friday night gala held at Whitford Country Club. Members, friends and guests from the beneficiary organizations danced to live music, enjoyed food and participated in silent and live auctions. On Saturday, the golf sponsors’ event featured 124 golfers. The Pro-Am on Sunday was canceled, but members and participating PGA professionals enjoyed lunch and the Eagles’ victory. The Whitford Classic Event was created eight years ago by a
few members who wanted to create an opportunity to give something back to the community in which they work, play and raise their families. To date, the Whitford Charitable Fund has granted a total of more than $900,000 to local nonprofits. The Whitford Charitable Fund’s mission is to “connect people who care with causes that matter.” The Whitford Charitable Fund is a fund of the Chester County Community Foundation. The Chester County Community Foundation works to connect people who care with causes that matter, so their legacy philanthropy makes a difference. The foundation holds nearly $60 million in trust and annually awards $2.5 million in
grants and scholarships. For more information, readers may visit www.chescocf.org. Pictured on front: Attendees at a luncheon in November included (front, from left) Tom Curran, Dawn Nunciato, Elizabeth Hess, Meghan Lyons Cowan, Karen Weinreich, Kim Nuelle, Alberta Landis, Ryan Ens, George Carlino, (back) Angela Scully, David James, George Powers, Joyce Lacy, Jim Terry, Bill Powers, Janna Sherrill, Ed Hart and Tom Skelley. The proceeds of the eighth annual Whitford Classic Event, totaling more than $130,000, were distributed to this year’s beneficiaries.

After the opening event on Jan. 5, upcoming dances will be held on Jan. 19; Feb. 2 and 16; March 2, 16 and 30; and April 6 and 20, 2019. It is not necessary to register for the events, and participants can attend as many dance parties as they choose. All attendees must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian who must stay with them during the hour-long session. Siblings are welcome. No snacks will be provided, so dancers are encouraged to bring bottled water or other beverages. Lizzy has prepared a playlist with dances such as the hokey pokey. “We have to tailor it to who is there, and we have multiple playlists,” said Lizzy, noting that there will also be some surprises. “Once (the dance parties) start, we will make changes as necessary,” Margaret added. “We want the kids to feel part of a group and have them go to an event that they enjoy.” Lizzy noted that the dance parties are modeled after High 5 Soccer, which Ally participates in. High 5 is a program offered each spring and fall by the Glenmoore Eagle Youth Association (GEYA). The program, run by coaches Jenn and Matt Wagner, offers children with special needs one hour of soccer each weekend, during which players pair up with a teenager or adult buddy for activities and games that are adapted to their abilities. “The dance will not have assigned buddies like High 5, but there will be volunteers dancing with them,” said Lizzy. During High 5 Soccer while the children are on the field, parents frequently network and talk about their children’s needs and discuss programs that are offered in the area. At the dance parties, the goal is to foster a similar support system. “If parents do want to dance, they can, but they don’t necessarily have to, and hopefully they will talk to the other parents like they do at High 5,” Margaret said. Upon completion of the project, Lizzy will present a report about the dance parties to the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania for final approval before receiving the Silver Award. For more information about the dance parties, readers may email lizzy.stahelek@gmail.com. More information about High 5 Soccer is available at www.geyasoccer.org and www.facebook.com/GEYASoccer.

Books lovers of all ages are invited to “take a book and return a book” at three Little Free Libraries that were recently installed locally by Simon Crew as part of his required Eagle Scout Service Project. Simon, a member of Boy Scout Troop 140 of Knauertown and a 2018 graduate of Owen J. Roberts High School, placed the Little Free Libraries at three parks located within the North Coventry Township park system. Those who visit the libraries can choose from a variety of books, including hardbacks and paperback books for adults, as well as children’s books for youngsters of all ages. People may return the books when they are done or donate other books to the libraries. The libraries are located at Kenilworth Park, 1206 Scherfel Blvd., Pottstown; Riverbend Park, 845 S. Hanover St., Pottstown; and Coventry Woods Park, 1954 Saint Peters Road, Pottstown. Simon said that he saw a Little Free Library on the boardwalk at the beach this past this summer and decided that he could re-create the idea locally. His first step in making the project a reality was to consult with officials from North Coventry Township. “I attended one of the Parks and Recreation meetings and presented my idea and blueprints,” Simon explained. “I suggested which parks I wanted to place the libraries at. From there, the chairman accompanied me to scout out potential locations, and we eventually decided on final locations.” He said that the project evolved from placing one library to placing three and that he

He also designed the wooden boxes that house the books and held a book drive to fill them. Some books were collected at the North Coventry Township building where Simon placed a donation box. The boxes are self-contained and were placed on sturdy posts that were cemented into the ground. “I created the plans myself,” Simon said. “There are kits online, but they can be expensive and show less work by the Scout to fundraise money for materials. The troop members
assisted on multiple workdays on the completion of segmented parts for each library.” Simon, who is currently a student in West Chester University’s Honors College, checked on the boxes while on Thanksgiving break, and he is currently working to have the three sites listed at www.littlefreelibrary.org. “The libraries all have official charter signs but are yet to have their GPS locations officially registered with the Little Free Library program online,” he added. “That portion (of the project) will be completed within the next month.”

“We’ve had parents who said that their kids who had trouble reading (have improved after reading to Paddy),” Zee stated, noting that children of all ages are invited to participate. “If they don’t read, I tell them to make up a story.” During the session at the library on Dec. 15, Mordekai Snouffer, 8, enjoyed reading with a Christmas book with Paddy. “He doesn’t have a pet at home, so he was a little afraid at first, but he adapted to her very easily,” Zee stated. Paddy has been a therapy dog for eight months and has been visiting the library since September. “We also go to Bryn Mawr Rehab,” Zee reported. “My husband is an outpatient at Bryn Mawr, and I saw the dogs come through, so I decided to get (Paddy) certified since we are spending time there. “(All the patients) gravitate toward her,” she added. “We love to hang out there.” In addition to visiting libraries, Lily is the wellness and stress relief dog for Chester County. In that role, she visits with employees at the Chester County Government Services Center and at the 313 West Market Street Building. “During their lunch hour, (employees) visit with (Lily) in the training room. People come in and they don’t want to leave,” Alakszay stated. She noted that Lily also visited with students from West Chester University. “Places like West Chester University and Drexel (University) have office hours for stress relief dogs. During exam week, students secure time to come out,” she explained. Lily and her owner also visit elementary schools upon request. “(One school in Downingtown had) two students who
had bullying issues, and they were afraid to come to school,” Alakszay said. “The kids hung out with the dog for six weeks, and it made a world of difference. It was amazing how these kids turned around and are now able to communicate through interaction with a dog.” Alakszay pointed out that one of Lily’s favorite places to visit is the Barclay Friends senior living facility in West Chester. “Depending on where they are with Alzheimer’s or dementia, (the residents) come to life when they see her. It is very gratifying,” she added. Since she has a full-time job as the staff development and advocacy coordinator for the Chester County Library System, Alakszay said she tries to visit as many places as possible as her schedule allows. “From now to the end of the year, we have about a dozen requests,” she said. “I love animals and I love helping people, so it’s a really nice mesh.” Alakszay, who is a member of the board of directors at the Dog Training Club of Chester County (DTCCC), recommends that those who feel that their dog has the right temperament to become a therapy dog visit w w w. d t c c c . o r g / a d v a n c e d / CGC-Therapy.htm for more information. Leashed, vaccinated pets will be welcome. The event is free, and no registration is necessary. For more information, readers may call the park office

Since it began, the volleyball tournament has raised $50,000 for the fund. Denlinger noted that the tournament, which started with family and friends of Glen, has grown over the years and that last year, a few teams had to be turned away. This year, MCC, which still has a presence in Afghanistan,
will have a display at both events that will include photos of Glen and testimonials. Representatives will be with the display to answer questions. Readers who wish to learn more about the tournament may visit http://glenlappvolley ball.weebly.com. John Denlinger, advancement associate with Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS), feels that the annual volleyball tournament that benefits the Glen D. Lapp Endowment for Student Aid is unique. “We organize the tournament ‘Glen-style,’” said Denlinger. “(Glen Lapp) was so laid-back and relaxed.” “Glen-style” means there are no officials. “Everybody calls their own game,” explained Denlinger. “If they touch the net, they make their own call. If it’s out, you make your call. That’s how Glen would have wanted it.” Denlinger added that the Glen-style play is explained to the teams prior to each tournament. This year’s fundraiser will be held on Saturdays, Jan. 5 and 12, 2019, at Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS), 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The tournament will be divided into two divisions. Division B will play beginning at 9 a.m. on Jan. 5, and Division A will play beginning at noon on Jan. 12. A maximum of 20 teams will play in each division. The tournament is organized by Mark Leaman and Kevin Groff, with help from Glen’s cousin Joel Lapp. Leaman and Groff played volleyball for Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) and were coached by Glen in 1992 and 1993. The initial tournament held in Glen’s honor was organized by his cousin Tim Lapp.
Glen was killed on Aug. 5, 2010, when he and nine others were ambushed after holding an eye and dental clinic in a remote area of Afghanistan. Glen, a nurse, traveled to Afghanistan in October 2008 through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in partnership with International Assistance Mission. Eye care is a pressing need in Afghanistan. To reach the village where the clinic was held, members of the group first flew, then drove, and then walked, packing their equipment on hired horses. Before becoming a nurse, Glen attended Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), where he played volleyball and earned a degree in math. Following graduation from EMU, Glen was not quite sure what he wanted to do next. He worked as the dorm supervisor at LMHS and coached volleyball. Eventually, he decided to become a nurse, completing a Johns Hopkins accelerated course to become a registered nurse in one year. During his adult life, Glen lived in six states, serving people from all walks of life as a registered nurse working at Lancaster Regional Hospital and with the Traveling Nurses Association, which took him to New York City and Oregon. He also worked in a government clinic on a Native American reserve in Supai, Ariz. In December of 2011, LMS began the endowment, which - in honor of Glen’s work overseas - is

New Year’s Day Ride To Support Veterans By Chelsea Peifer
When Tyler Stumpf, Billy Hecht, and a few of their friends from the Mount Joy American Legion got together 10 years ago to plan and host a New Year’s Day motorcycle ride to raise funds to support local veterans, they had no idea how far-reaching the event would grow to be. “We thought maybe it’d be one or two years,” recalled Stumpf. Instead, what started out as a fundraiser with 11 riders in year one has grown to more than 450 participants. Some folks travel from as far as Philadelphia, Baltimore, the Poconos, and Philipsburg for the ride, and each year a prize is given Mount Joy American Legion members (from left) Tyler Stumpf, to the rider who wins the Long Nicole Tipping, Billy Hecht, and Roland Geib invite the commu- Distance Award for making the nity to a motorcycle ride on New Year’s Day, followed by a longest trek to participate. hearty pork and sauerkraut meal. Bake Sale Helps To Bring Christmas To Christ’s Home It began with a conversation about foster care, and it blossomed into a church bake sale that raised more than $1,000 to help provide presents for Christ’s Home in Paradise. Zephaniah Doutrich, age 8, son of Eric and Nykiah Doutrich of Bowmansville, spearheaded the effort. On Nov. 4, Zephaniah and his family brought a large number of baked goods with them to church at Bethany Grace Fellowship, 400 Reading Road, East Earl, ready to sell them to attendees by donation to raise funds for Christ’s Home for Christmas presents. The sale raised $1,033, which was combined with receipts from another fundraiser for a total of $1,056. Zephaniah’s first efforts to raise funds for children in foster care began in mid-summer after his parents told him and his siblings that they were interested in fostering children. “When we got into the foster care journey, our children wanted to know where (foster children) come from,” explained Nykiah. “We sat down briefly and told them some children come from homes where parents don’t have the resources to take care of them, and that’s what sparked him.” Zephaniah’s concern for children in foster care quickly moved him to action. “One Saturday, he was out with his little sister, and he set up a table for a yard sale (because) he wanted to sell his toys,” said Nykiah. “He came in, and he said that he prayed for God to send people to buy his toys, but no one came.” Nykiah turned the occurrence into a teaching moment by explaining how to advertise a yard sale, but she was curious. “I said, ‘Oh, sweetie, why are you selling your toys?’” Zephaniah responded, “I want to buy toys for other children.” From there, the family decided to search for area organizations that support children in need.
Nykiah explained that it was important to Zephaniah to make contact with the home. “He wanted to physically buy the toys and go in there and drop them off,” she said “Christ’s Home in Paradise was one of the few homes that would allow us to do that.” In late August, the family held a special Honk for Foster Care at their home. “People honked and received fresh lemonade by donation,” said Nykiah. The event raised $23 and spurred Zephaniah forward toward organizing the bake sale. In the fall, Zephaniah approached Bethany Grace pastor Adam Nagle. “I told him I wanted to do a bake sale,” said Zephaniah. Nagle responded positively to the idea. “I love encouraging (children) to dream of the difference they can make,” said Nagle. “I’ll serve and stand with any (child) whose heart is captured by a cause and (who has) a plan to do something about it. I was thrilled to help him make this happen.” Nagle explained that Nov. 4 was chosen to hold the bake sale because it was National Orphan Sunday, which aims to draw attention to foster care and adoption concerns. On that day, Zephaniah joined Nagle at the front of the church to announce the fundraiser. The Doutrich family came to the church that day with loads of baked goods for attendees to purchase by donation. “My mom helped me bake some cookies, pumpkin bread, brownies, and gluten-free cookies,” said Zephaniah. Nykiah reported that the family prepared 30 loaves of pumpkin bread, three batches of brownies, and about 250 cookies, including monster cookies. Zephaniah explained that monster cookies have colored chocolate candies in them. All the items the family planned to sell had sold out by the end of the second service. A representative of Christ’s Home provided the family with a list of needs for the children and
Veterans from pg 8 few vendors will offer items for purchase including commemorative shirts and patches for vests. Organized by members of Post 185, the ride is open to the public and not only to motorcyclists, but to drivers of any other vehicles who would like to participate to honor veterans. The approximately 25- to 30-mile ride follows a scenic route along the Susquehanna River through Marietta and Bainbridge. The ride will finish at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, located at 240 N. Hanover St., Elizabethtown, where a traditional pork and sauerkraut meal will be served in the banquet hall. More than 100 pounds of mashed potatoes and 160 pounds of pork and sauerkraut were prepared last year, and any leftovers go up for bids at the close of the event. Attendees may also bid on items at a Chinese auction, including motorcycle merchandise, gift cards, and more.
Stumpf and Hecht said that in the past nine years, the charity ride has raised more than $125,000 for the veterans who utilize services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Organizers attribute the ride’s success to its timing - not a lot of other local rides are scheduled on New Year’s Day - and also to the fact that all of the funds raised go directly toward local veterans, with no overhead or administrative costs. Organizers would like to raise at least $25,000 this year to reach or surpass the $150,000 mark. Icy conditions and freezing cold temperatures last year meant that it was the first time the ride portion of the event had to be canceled, but Stumpf said that nearly 200 people still showed up for the meal at the Legion and raised more than $23,000. For more information, readers may call Stumpf at 717-468-6197 or Hecht at 717-283-6379.
Zephaniah Doutrich, age 8, son of Eric and Nykiah Doutrich of Bowmansville, recently organized a bake sale that raised more than $1,000. Zephaniah used the funds to purchase toys and other gifts for children at Christ’s Home in Paradise. the cottages. “They have nine children there ages 6 to 20,” said Nykiah, who added that the toys were purchased and taken to Christ’s Home by Dec. 10. “We thought (that this effort) was something
small and that we were just being obedient to the Lord, but it just really took off,” said Nykiah of the response to the fundraiser and opportunity to purchase the gifts. “We are super happy about it.”
