St. Mark’s United Methodist Church,

By Chelsea Peifer

Every weeknight evening in the foyer of the James Buchanan apartment complex at Masonic Village at Elizabethtown, a dozen or so individuals gather to loom knit. Known as the Masonic Village Loving Loomers, the group began meeting together two years ago after two women discovered a common interest in loom knitting and helping others. They began meeting casually in the library to create hats to donate for local, national, and international needs. As more people noticed what the women were doing and wanted to take part, they decided to move their nightly meetings to the roomier foyer to accommodate the growing group. “It’s friendship, getting together and laughing,

and it’s a wonderful social outlet to do something good for someone else,” said Mary Jean Risser, who helped to establish the club. Not everyone attends every night, but there is always a group knitting together for about an hour - give or take. “We are a very close-knit group,” said Betty Deibert with a laugh. Club members Donald and Emma Hoover have taken on the role of providing a bit of entertainment for the knitters, whether that be a song or a brief reading to open their time together. Other members of the group include Ann Colangelo, Dianna Taggart, Lynne Brenneman, Joan Firth, Dee Molinari, Twila Shreffler, Jean Saam, Millie Jamison, Lilly Campbell, Edna Sloan, Chris Hornberger, Carolyn Matthews, and Wanda Roth. Room To Grow Service Dog Program Moves To Larger Facility By Ann Mead Ash

Sully, the newest UDS Foundation service dog trainee, was named in honor of the yellow Labrador that served President George H. W. Bush. Sully is in need of a sponsor to fund the completion of his twoyear training before going to work helping to provide independence to a person with a disability.

When UDS Foundation moved from its previous home in Greenfield to 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, the space available for the service dog program more than doubled. The new facility includes a kennel with space for 12 dogs, a cuddle room for puppies, and a large training room. According to Lori Breece, UDS service dog program manager, 12 puppies per year are brought into the program, which takes several years to turn an eight-week-old ball of fluff into a dog capable of giving a person with a disability a chance for greater independence. In addition to serving individuals, many UDS dogs are being sent to schools where they provide student support. “Since we have been here See Service Dogs pg 5

The members of the Masonic Village Loving Loomers, a resident-organized club that loom knits hats and other items to donate to folks in need, have completed a total of 1,759 hats since they began meeting two years ago.

Elizabethtown and the surrounding areas are rich in resources and opportunities, but sometimes finding and sorting through all of those options can be overwhelming - especially for parents scouting out potential schools for their children. That is why the MOMS Club of Elizabethtown hosts a preschool fair every year. President Erica Leilous stated that the purpose of the event is to highlight educational offerings of local preschools in order to help parents make the right choice for educating their young children. The ninth annual MOMS Club of Elizabethtown preschool fair is set to take place on Saturday, Jan. 19, from 9 to 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. Admission is free. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 26. Leilous noted that preschools typically begin sign-ups and enrollment for the fall in the spring of the same year, so exploring options early is key. “While most schools start when the child is age 3 or 4, some, such as Elizabethtown Community Nursery School, can start as young as age 2,” added Leilous. “Those attending Children’s Playroom of Lancaster County can start as infants.” Schools and organizations scheduled to take part in the event include Bossler Christian Preschool, Children’s Playroom of Lancaster County, Elizabethtown Child Care Center (ECCC), Elizabethtown Community Nursery School, Fishburn Flock Christian Day Care and Early Learning Center, GEARS Kids Center, Kids Playhouse at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, Kraybill Mennonite School, Lancaster Mennonite School - Hershey Campus, Mount Calvary Christian School, Play 2 Learn, Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary School, Susquehanna Waldorf School, Tiny Timbers Christian Preschool, and Under the Willow Preschool. “It is a great opportunity to explore all the schools at one time, in one location, versus

researching all the options on your own,” Leilous remarked. “It is great to have the faceto-face interaction and to meet individuals that could possibly be working with your child.” Additionally, the MOMS Club of Elizabethtown will hold a bake sale at the fair. A local business that offers educational classes and camps for toddlers, preschoolers, and schoolage children will have a table of science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) activities set up for attendees to try and purchase. Plus, a local school bus service will have a bus parked outside for another Touch-A-Bus experience, which Leilous said was a popular part of last year’s preschool fair, too. Leilous described the MOMS Club of Elizabethtown as a group of mothers that are currently at home raising their children. Members must have an Elizabethtown, Mount Joy, Bainbridge, Marietta, Maytown, or Lawn address to join officially, as the club is an official chapter of MOMS Club International. The group gathers monthly at an official Club Connections meeting, typically held on the first Friday of each month at a location in Elizabethtown. “This meeting is where club news, planning, and event discussion take place while children play,” said Leilous. Members also take turns planning and hosting play dates, activities, outings, and child-friendly field trips to local places. “It is a great way for moms to make friends with other moms in the area that are also currently home and gives children opportunities to interact and play with others,” commented Leilous. For more information on MOMS Club of Elizabethtown, interested individuals may stop by the membership table at the preschool fair or email etownmomsclub@gmail.com.

bethtown, Rheems, Bainbridge, Mount Joy, Marietta, and Maytown area. In 2018, the Loving Loomers were recognized for their volunteer efforts by Lancaster General Health - Penn Medicine. All of the yarn that the Masonic Village Loving Loomers use is donated, and each member of the group provides his or her own loom to use to create hats. Looms of various sizes are used, depending on whether the hats are for babies or adults. Some members work on scarves, quilts, and other projects at the meetings as well. The time that it takes to complete a single hat can vary based on a person’s level of experience and the complexity of the chosen design, explained Deibert, who joined the club after noticing and becoming intrigued by the members’ regular meetings. “I like the friendship and caring and the camaraderie,” shared Deibert. “It’s a family, really.” The Loving Loomers is one of the many resident-organized clubs on the campus of Masonic Village. The first session will run from Monday, June 17, to Friday, June 28, and session two will be held on Monday, July 8, to Friday, July 19, both with options of half-day hours from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and full-day hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A third session scheduled for Monday, July 22, to Friday, Aug. 2, will offer half-day hours only. “That third session is usually made up of new families who want to try it out for the first time,” noted Aaron’s Acres executive director Risa Paskoff. Interested individuals may register at www.aaronsacres.org by Sunday, March 31. Scholarships are available. New families will be scheduled for a face-to-face meeting in order for everyone to get acquainted and for staff to become familiar with the camper’s strengths, weaknesses, and capabilities. Having professional staff, including special education teachers and a nurse, as well as a 1-to1 or 1-to-2 staff-to-child ratio, enables Aaron’s Acres to accept any child, regardless of medical or behavioral challenges. “Having that individualized attention makes for a great relationship and experience for the child,” Paskoff stated. Counselors are needed, and interested individuals age 18 and over may apply at www.aaronsacres.org by March 31. Paskoff noted that serving at Aaron’s Acres summer camp is great for undergraduate and graduate students studying subjects such as social work, special education, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, but the organization is also thrilled to have anyone with a heart for the campers.

“We love when people without those majors do it and get comfortable interacting with our campers,” added Paskoff. “It’s great hands-on experience for people who want hands-on experience, and they’re always supervised by professionals.” Unpaid positions are also open to high school students age 14 and up who would like to volunteer as buddies at camp. Buddies act as

positive role models for campers under the supervision of the group leader. Activities at camp include swimming every day, music therapy, therapeutic horseback riding, arts and crafts, group games, and sports. “The staff give 200 percent, and they always say they feel like they learn more than they feel the campers do,” Paskoff stated. “They are really energetic, passionate people who will do whatever it takes to make (camp) an exceptional experience.” See Aaron s Acres pg 11

Service Dogs from pg 1 (in the new location), we have added several clients in less than a year, including three or four schools,” said Breece. “We are so pleased with the pups-in-the-classroom opportunity. Our vision would be a dog in every school or at least every district.” In schools, dogs serve students with multiple disabilities, but they also serve in learning support classrooms. Kristy Smith, service dog program coordinator with UDS, said that dogs help with physical therapy or with fine motor skill issues, but they also aid students struggling with “the emotional aspects of school and life’s challenges.” Breece added that in some classrooms, time with a dog can be an incentive. “For some of those students who are more challenged, it’s a calming influence, and they can work toward time with the dog as a reward,” she said. Smith noted that currently UDS dogs are present in Cocalico, Ephrata, Penn Manor, and Northern York County school districts. “Each dog has a teacher or principal they go home with each night as the main handler, but we ask the schools to have a group of handlers,” she explained. Having a group of handlers allows a dog to work in multiple rooms. Breece noted that having a dog in a school affects the atmosphere of the building. “It changes the lives of the faculty by changing the environment behind the cement walls,” she said. “We’d like to see more dogs in schools.” A service dog’s training begins when it becomes part of the BARKS Prison Program, through which it is trained by an inmate at a Pennsylvania correctional facility. Puppies live with their inmate handlers around the clock, learning up to 50 commands. At the age of one year, the dogs return to Lancaster. For the next six months, they live in a volunteer puppy home. “(The dogs) attend weekly outings and training sessions, and they will go out in the community so they can get socializa-

tion,” explained Breece. At the age of 18 months, the dogs are sent to trainers for six months of specialty training. Smith explained that many of the tasks the dogs perform are extensions of actions that come naturally to Labradors, such as retrieving and tugging, which make up 95 percent of the working service dog force. “A lot of the main job is retrieval from the floor or the counter or helping pay,” she said, adding that dogs tug open doors, carry bags that are too heavy (for their client), and remove articles of clothing, such as socks. “They push elevator buttons and handicapped-accessible button, and turn light switches on and off.” The newest puppy in the UDS program has been named Sully in honor of the yellow Labrador that served President George H. W. Bush and was photographed lying near his master’s casket during the funeral services in early December. UDS’ Sully is in need of a sponsor, which can be a local individual, organization, or business, to cover his two-year training. Breece is also looking for a sponsor for the dog program’s new training room. Readers who would like to learn more about sponsorship and volunteer opportunities with UDS may visit www.udservices.org.

Wrestlers Open Season With 3 Straight Wins wrestling where forfeits can earn a team upwards of half its total score in a match. In the month of December the Indians benefitted from 15 of them while only surrendering three as they downed Ephrata 54-15, Lebanon 62-18, and Cedar Crest 61-18. Tied with Garden Spot (3-0, 4-0) and Manheim Central (3-0, 3-0) for first place, Donegal hosted the Pioneers (2-0, 2-0) last week and despite a slow start which saw L-S post three straight pins, fought back to take a one-point lead before the visitors closed the door on a 45-26 defeat. In all, nine of the 14 bouts were decided by a fall. After falling behind 12-0, Mason Ober put Donegal on the board with a 17-6 major decision win over Hector Colon at 152 to make it 12-4. Two consecutive pins by Garrett Blake (1:12) and Will Small (2:58) put the Indians over the top at 16-15, but the L-S upper weights took control with falls at 182, 195, 220, and 285 to reclaim the lead at 39-16 and ensure that with only four bouts remaining, Photo by Bob Devonshire Donegal’s Taj Younger controls Lampeter-Strasburg’s Arik Harnish during the 120-pound bout in Donegal could not recover. Ethan Herr’s 14-0 major decision last Wednesday’s Section Two match at L-S. over Austin Reiff at 106 and Dylan Bower’s late fall over Riley Eckman in 4:54 seconds of their 126-pound contest represented the final team scores for the Indians. With the loss, Donegal fell into sole possession of second place heading into a showdown with the undefeated Spartans. GIRL’S BASKETBALL Donegal (2-2, 6-3) began its regular season with mixed results as it came out of the gates with a 67-51 non-league victory over Columbia (2-2, 4-5) but dropped its next two against Solanco (2-2, 7-3) and Lampeter-Strasburg (4-0, 8-1) with respective scores of 63-49 and 70-58. The lady Indians rebounded, however, with a 57-51 win over Manheim Central (0-3, 1-8) and a 74-62 victory at home over Garden Spot (1-3, 4-6). With three players averaging double figures in Kiera Baughman (22.44), Cheyenne Livelsberger (12.89), and Summer Steffy (11.78), the team as a whole was scoring 56.22 PPG heading into last ThursPhoto by Bob Devonshire day’s home game versus Hempfield. Last Thursday the Indians traveled to Dover for a non-league matchup and had a tall task on defense in trying to contain Elijah Sutton who entered the game with 959 career points. Dover jumped out to a big 22-5 lead by the second quarter before Donegal’s offense picked it up and outscored the Eagles 15-12 for a 34-20 score at halftime. Sutton, however proved too hard to defend as he hit 11 field goals, three from

Donegal scored 10 in the third while defensively they held Dover to 11, and then put up 20 in the fourth, but the home team answered with a 20-point outburst as well to deny any chance of a comeback win by the Indians. Jacob Shoemaker scored eight on the night followed by Patrick Summers (4) who was 1-2 at the line with a three-pointer, Luke Yunginger (3), Zion Gibbs (2), and Logan Nauman (2).

Elizabethtown Mennonite Plans Pizza Baking Contest

Apple Expert from pg 1 By Dayna M. Reidenouer

As work on the renovations and addition to Elizabethtown Mennonite Church were well underway in 2018, the board members realized that the budget no longer allowed for the immediate inclusion of volleyball nets and basketball hoops in the new multipurpose gymnasium. “All I was looking forward to was the basketball hoop and volleyball net,” recalled 13-yearold Colin Miller with a smile. Colin, who attends Elizabethtown Mennonite Church with his family, mentioned his disappointment to pastor Conrad Kanagy when they were both volunteering during a community-wide service day in July. The two talked about potential solutions and came up with the idea for a pizza baking contest fundraiser based on their common love for making - and eating - pizza. “I said, ‘Why don’t we propose it to the board as a fundraiser?’ and Colin took off with it,” Kanagy shared. After Colin’s slideshow presentation and explanation of the idea, the board members agreed it was a great suggestion and planning for the event began. The pizza baking contest fundraiser is set to take place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, in the new multipurpose gymnasium at Elizabethtown Mennonite Church, 300 S. Spruce St., Elizabethtown. Community members are invited to attend and may make reservations by calling 717-682-1907 or 717-669-0074. Admission is by donation, and proceeds will go toward purchasing sports equipment. Any additional funds raised will be put toward the building fund. Ten groups will be baking pizza, and attendees will have the chance to sample all 10 pizza entries. A full salad bar and beverages will also be available. People will be able to vote for their favorite pizza for the People’s Choice winner. Colin also reached out to Sal Bellia, owner of Sal’s Pizza in Elizabethtown, to serve as a local celebrity judge for the contest. Bellia was

He will be judging pizzas based primarily on taste, as well as on shape and appearance. Employees from Scenic Ridge Construction, the company that completed the work on the church, will also serve as judges. Winning pizzas will be auctioned off for folks to purchase once the sampling and voting have ended. “This facility was always intended to be used by the community, and we feel that we’re here to serve the community. This (pizza baking contest) is a good fit with that,” Kanagy stated. In the near future, free weekly workouts for men will be offered in the gymnasium by two church members with personal training and weightlifting experience. Kanagy said that, once finalized, the details on that will be posted on the church sign. Groundbreaking for the addition to Elizabethtown Mennonite Church took place on May 12, 2018. Renovations were also made to the interior of the building. The

sanctuary now has seating capacity for 213 people, and the wooden benches were replaced with chairs. Rain delayed construction somewhat, but Kanagy said the majority of the work has been completed at this point. An official dedication service for the new space will take place on Sunday, Jan. 27. Kanagy and his wife, Heidi, who serves as the minister of care, are thankful for how supportive Elizabethtown Borough has been of the project as well as for how the congregation took initiative with the entire process. “We have had excellent leadership from within the congregation,” said Kanagy. “We really felt like God’s spirit has led and directed all of this, and we’re really grateful.” Elizabethtown Mennonite Church offers weekly Sunday services with classes for people of all ages at 9 a.m. and worship at 10 a.m. All are welcome. “The only apple I remember from my childhood was the Red Delicious someone gave me at Halloween. I felt ripped off that they didn’t give me candy,” recalled author and Maine apple historian John Bunker. “(At that time), I thought apples came in only red and green.” After Bunker grew up, graduated from college, and moved to Super Chilly Farm in Palermo, Maine, he discovered apple trees, specifically those ancient specimens that grow in backyards and in far-off fields throughout rural Maine. Appreciating a potential source of free food and seeing as no one did anything with the fruit, Bunker sought for and received permission to collect the windfalls. In the course of his collections, Bunker began learning about apples from the owners and soon came to a surprising realization. “I realized pretty quickly there were more than red ones and green ones. There were thousands (of varieties),” Bunker recalled. Thus began a lifetime of fascination with the heirloom apples of Maine. Bunker has spent nearly five decades on Super Chilly Farm, developing an off-the-grid homestead and community-supported agriculture program. He has collected information about as many of the different varieties of apples

Every seed that he planted was genetically unique. From those millions of seedlings that were planted in the United States (by Appleseed and other Europeans), they would graft (preferred types) onto a root stock to give to their neighbor or have a second one. Around the Civil War, we had about 25,000 varieties of apples.” Bunker noted that commercial fruit growers have focused on apples ideal for eating raw, so many of those varieties have either died out or become rare, and folks are missing out. “There are so many uses for apples: cooked, baked, in sauce, or cider,” Bunker said. “I eat apples daily. I make sauce every morning. The apple (variety) doesn’t look pretty, but it stores well in the cold cellar, and

“We take every moment, and even though you think of it as just camp, we’re working on socialization and other skills at all times,” added Paskoff. Special activities, theme days, and community service are other significant aspects of camp. Through the Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (AAAOK), campers ages 13 to 21 have the chance to take part in community service projects such as running an Alex’s Lemonade Stand, playing bingo at Pleasant View Retirement Community and Danner Home, and having a car wash to raise funds to donate to a local nonprofit selected by the campers. Optional programs for parents are also offered during camp, ranging from guest speakers to pampering days with manicures, pedicures, and massages. Aaron’s Acres has hosted its summer camp in Manheim since 2013. It merged its Dauphin County camp site with Manheim in 2017 and its Berks County site in 2018. Transportation to camp from Dauphin and Berks counties is available. Aaron’s Acres is currently in the process of looking for a property or space to purchase as a permanent centralized facility for its offices, summer camp, and year-round programming.

The Mount Joy Rotary Students of the Month for December are Hunter Williams (second from left) and Mackenzie Allessie (second from right). They were recognized by William Rosengrant (left), Donegal High School counselor, and Rotary president Mark Rorabaugh.

Each summer, thousands of children from New York City’s low-income communities visit suburban, rural, and small-town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program. By volunteering as a host family for summer 2019, children can enjoy a variety of summertime activities. Fresh Air children are boys and girls who live in New York City. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. Fresh Air children also participate in year-round leadership and educational programs.
