Innkeeper Cooks Up Some Fun BY CATHY MOLITORIS

ancy Skee loves to cook, and now she’s passing that passion along to others. The owner and innkeeper of Olde Square Inn, 127 E. Main St., Mount Joy, released a cookbook in late 2020 and will release an online cooking course soon. “When COVID-19 hit in March, it affected my business, and I was looking for a way to keep my brand out in the public eye,” Skee said. “Over the years, people had asked me if I would ever do a cookbook, and this seemed like a great time to do it.” Working with Dave Schell of Main Street Mount Joy, Skee won a grant to help fund her project. Skee won the grant through the Hartbeat of Main Street Grant Program, created by The Hartford Small Business Insurance and Main Street America. She used the money to publish “Let’s Cook! With Nancy” and to create the website https://letscook withnancy.com. She also created Let’s Cook! With Nancy aprons that are for sale on the site. The cookbook features 40 recipes

Providing A Safe Space For Students BY CATHY MOLITORIS

For almost 40 years, Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) has been providing programs and services for students in the Mount Joy area. Although the pandemic has impacted its programming, the need for the organization is more important than ever, said Cristina Paden, executive director. “We give students a safe place to be where we can share the love of Jesus with them,” she explained. See REYS pg 2

“All small businesses appreciate the support of the community ... We are all going through trying times, and to have people embrace what I’m doing has been a blessing.” “I am a home chef. I get my cooking sense from my little Hungarian mother, who could make shoe leather taste like roast beef. She just had it when it came to cooking.” A retired teacher who taught arts as well as home economics, Skee purchased the inn six years ago. “It had been a dream of mine to own an inn for a long time,” she noted. When the pandemic began to impact her business, she had to think outside the box.

“I started doing cooking demos on Facebook, demonstrating the recipes I used at the inn and some others,” she said. “Our posts reached more than 3,000 people a week, and we have people watching from across the country.” Inspired by the success of her Facebook demos, she started exploring the idea of launching an online cooking series. Her first series will feature The Science of Cookie Baking. It includes four lessons on topics including reading recipes and measuring correctly, the purpose of ingredients and the chemistry of baking. Registration is currently open for the classes, which are set to start later this month. Skee said she’s grateful for the positive feedback she’s received about her cookbook and cooking demonstrations. “All small businesses appreciate the support of the community,” she stated. “We are all going through trying times, and to have people embrace what I’m doing has been a blessing.” For more information on the cookbook or cooking classes, readers may visit https://letscookwithnancy.com.

Nancy Skee, owner and innkeeper of Olde Square Inn in Mount Joy, released a cookbook of her recipes and is also launching a series of online cooking classes later this month.

for a few minutes to play a game or two and pick up some presents and food. “It was really important to us to hold our Christmas party in some way or another, so we came up with this idea where we could be safe but still welcome students,” Paden explained. Paden, who took over as executive director in July, said coming on board during a pandemic has been challenging, but she’s seen nothing but support from the community. “The pandemic has significantly impacted our fundrais-

“We provide opportunities for students in grades one through 12 such as games, homework help, free meals or snacks, lifeskills lessons, martial arts, oneon-one music instruction and special outings or field trips when we’re able to do those.” Before the pandemic, REYS offered programming for up to 200 students a week. In recent months, that number has dwindled some, Paden said, but the need for services has not. “With so many of our students learning online for school, they are looking for a place to find connections, friendships and mentoring,” she explained. “They can use in-person help with their homework. They are looking for extra support, love and personal interaction.” At one point, REYS had to cut its programming down to biweekly events for students, but recently, weekly programming began again. “ We knew it was really important that students have an opportunity to come in at least once a week and have that point of connection with other people,” Paden stated. This year has been difficult for REYS, with a major fundraiser and events canceled, but the staff has been working hard to continue providing for the community. In December, staff members held a “Christmas To Go” party for students to stop in

“Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.

Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems The only sleep systems that provide a Cuddle Zone in the middle, while raising or lowering head or feet sections. This solves common health problems for couples who sleep together. Here are some of the healthy benefits:

The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.

Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.

Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.

More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.

Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.

And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.

Now Explore Your Options At Gardner’s Mattress & More, we’ve curated over 24 Cuddle Zone sleep systems for you to see in person, 7 days a week. Private appointments are available. People enjoy our shopping experience, in part because there’s no sales pressure ever. And we have over 200 verified stories of customer delight for your review. Penn State Master Gardeners has announced that of all 67 counties in Pennsylvania, Lancaster County ranks first for certified pollinator-friendly gardens, with 100 certifications in the county out of 944 statewide. The Master Gardeners noted that Lancaster County also takes second place for the number of new certifications awarded in 2020. Penn State Master Gardeners created this certification program to encourage the gardening public to help protect pollinators, many of whose populations are declining. According to Penn State entomologists, pollinators are responsible for one-third of the world’s food supply. However, habitat loss, disease, and contact with pesticides continue to threaten pollinator populations. The pollinator-friendly garden certification program encourages people to provide food and habitat for pollina-

to put an innovative twist on general contracting. Using their 40 combined years of expertise in real estate and restaurant construction, renovation, and remodeling, Schoenberger and DeArment strive to create unique functional spaces using quality products and workmanship. As a Realtor and the owner of Homegrown Outdoor Finishes, DeArment has an eye for enhancing a property’s perceived value and improving its appeal. He noted that his realtime experience with design and interior trends has helped Four Walls quickly break into a competitive industry. Schoenberger has served as project manager for the design, construction, and opening of six restaurants, including quick service and upscale casual. The skills learned in that process can be applied to the management of any home improvement project. “As a restaurant general manager and owner, you learn to be very hands-on within your four walls. That’s how the (business) name was derived,” Schoenberger explained. “This necessity to save money drives you to

learn how to fix, repair, and build anything and everything you can.” Four Walls offers general contracting services, managing projects from start to finish. The business takes the lead in coordinating labor, materials, equipment, vendor partners, and outside resources necessary to complete all aspects of commercial and residential construction projects in Lancaster, York, Dauphin, and Lebanon counties. Four Walls operates with the understanding that listening, leading, and leveraging are critical aspects of positive and productive relationships with clients. “Four Walls takes the burden of calling three electricians, three plumbers, three carpenters, etc., to find the best price and most reliable service (off the customer),” Schoenberger said. “We line up the subcontractors, streamline all costs into one payment, manage the project timeline, and follow up with any issues that arise. From start to finish, we take the work out of your hands.” Schoenberger and DeArment grew up in Elizabethtown and live in the

area with their families. They are committed to serving their hometown and surrounding areas. The men are members of Elizabethtown Rotary Club and the Elizabethtown Chamber of Commerce. Schoenberger was a founder of Main Street Improving Business/Visit Elizabethtown, which was a downtown economic revitalization organization. DeArment has invested in several rental projects to help the community. “(We) both have a personal interest to use (our) experience to make the area better,” Schoenberger remarked. “Four Walls can help improve homes, which will bring more interest to our small town.” Readers are invited to visit www.fourwallsconstruction co.com or call 717-689-5260 for free estimates on their projects.

Since 2004

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) urges motorists to drive safely in work zones. Even though construction season is winding down in many places, PennDOT road crews are still working on the roadways. Drivers should not speed, never drive distracted, and always buckle up, especially in work zones. Pennsylvania law states that anyone stopped by law enforcement for violating the posted speed limit by more than 5 mph will face doubled fines. The fine is determined based on the amount the driver is traveling over the speed limit. Gov. Tom Wolf signed a law in 2016 that says any driver who causes serious bodily injury within a work zone could face a fine and a sixmonth license suspension, and a driver causing a death within a work zone could face a larger fine and a oneyear license suspension. Drivers who do not turn on their headlights in posted work zones face a fine. Additionally, in an effort to change unsafe driving behaviors in work zones, Pennsylvania’s Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement began earlier this year. The program uses vehiclemounted systems to detect and record motorists exceeding posted work zone speed limits by 11 miles per hour or more using electronic speed timing devices. AWZSE systems can be deployed in active work zones, where workers are present, on the turnpike as well as any active work zone on a federal aid highway this includes higher class roadways like interstates, major arterials, and numbered routes. Registered owners will receive a warning letter for a first offense and a violation notice and a fine for subsequent offenses. These violations are civil penalties only; no points will be assessed to drivers’ licenses. For more information on work zone safety, readers may visit www.penndot.gov/safety.

the most of this natural stress relief potential, pet owners may consider implementing a daily 15-minute break with their cat or dog to meditate. Owners should sit with their pet in a quiet, comfortable place and focus on being present, breathing deeply, and stroking their pet’s fur. Another option is to break out a yoga mat and do some poses with one’s cat or dog, which may not only ease stress, but also provides a gentle workout. In order to eat better this year, individuals can swap out fatty, sweet, or salty treats and start sharing some goodfor-you snacks with their pet. Dogs can eat raw sunflower or pumpkin seeds, plus produce like watermelon, blackberries, cranberries, blueberries, bananas, apple slices, and baby carrots, but no grapes or raisins, which can be toxic. Cats can get in on the fun, too. Felines are able to enjoy fish like salmon or mackerel, meats like plain boiled chicken, and even a bit of cheese or egg. Owners should keep in mind that only 10% of a pet’s daily calories should come from treats. A veterinarian can confirm which foods are appropriate for a particular pet. If people have been stuck at home and cannot take another day staring at the same four walls, they can venture out with their pet and hit the road for a day trip. Many beaches, state parks, and local landmarks are still open for sightseeing. Individuals who do not have a pet may consider adopting one. By adopting, not only will an animal’s life be saved, but new owners will get a great deal, as most pets are also spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and ready to go home for one fee. To get started, readers may visit www.bestfriends.org and find a local shelter or rescue.
