Art Walk Will Showcase Student Work BY CATHY MOLITORIS
n Saturday, Jan. 23, artwork will fill the program room at the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, when the library hosts its third annual Youth Art Walk from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Although the event has been held in the past, this year’s format will be a little different, said Kim Beach, operations coordinator. “In prior years, we had art set up around the library, but this year it will all be in one area as well as in the display case in the lobby,” she explained. “ We’re using our large program room so we can keep everything socially distanced.” The Art Walk features the work of Donegal High School and Donegal Junior High School students. In past years, artists were invited to attend and talk about their art with visitors. Because of COVID-19 concerns, that is changing this year as well, Beach said. “We’re making a program for

Offering Hope Through Health When Anne Marie McAlester became executive director of Hope Within Ministries in October 2019, she started thinking about changing the sign outside the Elizabethtown organization. “I felt it didn’t communicate everything we are about,” she said. So last fall, she applied for a community awareness grant through Hershey Medical Center and received funding for a new sign. The sign, at 4748 East Harrisburg Pike, now reads “Hope Within Community Health, Counseling & Dental Center.” See Hope Within pg 2
“They have a place to showcase their work, and it’s also a good way for families to come in and support their students in a safe environment.” Artwork displayed at the show will vary from ceramics to paintings and drawings. “ We’re not sure what we’re going to get, but we’re excited about it,” Beach noted. “That’s part of the fun. It’s always a surprise.” The idea for the Art Walk came about after Mount Joy began hosting a Festival of the Arts. “ We
wanted to somehow be a part of that in our own way, even though we’re not located on Main Street,” Beach said. “The first year, we contacted the high school and asked if they wanted to participate. Last year, we also invited the junior high students.” Beach said planning for the Art Walk began in December, and organizers agreed they would hold the event even with the necessary changes. “Art shows at schools have been canceled, so this is a place where students can show the public their art,” she stated. “They have a place to showcase their work, and it’s also a good way for families to come in and support their students in a safe environment.”
The third annual Youth Art Walk will be held Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Milanof-Schock Library in Mount Joy. It will feature art from Donegal High School and Donegal Junior High School students.
Providing A Safe Space For Students
INSIDE THIS ISSUE

For almost 40 years, Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) has been providing programs and services for students in the Mount Joy area. Although the pandemic has impacted its programming, the need for the organization is more important than ever, said Cristina Paden, executive director. “We give students a safe place to be where we can share the love of Jesus with them,” she explained. “We provide opportunities for students in grades one through 12 such as games, homework help, free meals or snacks, life-skills lessons, martial arts,

“ We are a free primary medical care clinic, and we’ve been offering that since 2006,” McAlester noted. “In 2014, we added counseling, and we hoped to add dental in (early 2020), but COVID pushed that back until we finally opened our dental clinic in July 2020.” McAlester said the nonprofit provides primary care for uninsured, low-income people in Lancaster, Lebanon and Dauphin counties. “These are people who work part-time hours without benefits or people who have lost their jobs or are unemployed,” she explained. Counseling is offered on a sliding-scale payment plan and is open to anyone, with no income qualifications. All medical services are provided by volunteers, including a volunteer psychiatrist who comes in twice a month.
“ We use a battalion of volunteer medical providers who work full time somewhere else but volunteer here a few hours a month,” McAlester noted. “We use graduate students under the supervision of licensed counselors for our mental health counseling.” She added that the organization hopes to expand its dental clinic but is in need of more volunteer dentists. Over the last year, Hope Within has seen a rising need for its services. “Across the board, we’ve seen huge increases. We’re seeing people who have lost their jobs, people who are afraid of losing their jobs. We’ve seen a major spike in requests for services. We have people who can no longer afford insulin or asthma medication,” McAlester remarked. “These medications are very expensive.” The organization typically
holds four fundraisers throughout the year, but had to cancel all of them in 2020. Hope Within is planning a Valentine’s Day fundraiser, she noted, with more information coming soon on the organization’s Facebook page. “We’ll ask people to donate to us, Hope Within Ministries staff memand in return, bers (from left) Jo Davidson, Anne we’ll send a per- Marie McAlester and Beth Moad sonalized card out show off the new sign that reflects on their behalf,” all of the organization’s offerings. that Hope Within will conMcAlester explained. East Hempfield Township Police Department (PD) has participated in the Bleed Blue Challenge since the initiative’s inception. “We want to support Penn Medicine LG Health in its quest to get donations, especially in a pandemic year,” explained Lt. Jen Brubaker. “The blood stays local. It’s a way to give back to the community.” The Bleed Blue Challenge is a program of the Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LG Health) Blood Donor Center and is running from Jan. 4 to Friday, Jan. 29. During the initiative, participating police departments are encouraging members of their staffs and their communities to give blood at LG Health blood drives and at the center, 2104 Harrisburg Pike, Suite 202, Lancaster. Blood donor recruiter Anita Blizzard introduced the Bleed Blue Challenge with four PDs two years ago. It has grown to include 15 PDs this year: Manheim Township, East Hempfield, East Lampeter, Columbia
Borough, Millersville Borough, Millersville University, Lancaster City, Lititz Borough, West Hempfield, Northwest Regional, Mount Joy Borough, Pequea Township, Quarryville Borough, Strasburg Borough, and Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J. A total of 80 units were received during the challenge in 2020, with Millersville University PD receiving credit and a plaque for the most donors. LG Health aims to keep 200 units in stock at all times, Blizzard noted. “What they did last year was really good. With more police stations involved, you’d assume that you’d do even better (this year),” she said. Brubaker and other police officers planned to donate blood during the Bleed Blue Blood Drive on National Law Enforcement Day, Jan. 7. “Our first responders and police are great leaders in caring for our community. This effort is one more contribution they are willing to make,” said LG Health director of laboratory operations Brian Stambaugh. To participate in the Bleed Blue Challenge, individuals

may make an appointment by visiting http://lancaster generalhealth.org/lgh/our -services/blood-bank/about -us/blood-drives.aspx or by calling 717-544-0170, option 1. Donors must be age 16 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health, have no history of hepatitis, and not have received tattoos or body piercings within the last three months. Individuals should be well hydrated and have eaten a substantial amount within four hours before donating. Those who have had COVID-19 may donate if it has been at least 28 days since diagnosis and they have no symptoms. Blizzard noted that COVID-19 is not spread through blood, but the donor center wants to reduce risk of infecting staff members and other donors. All potential donors will receive a thermal screening and be asked a series of questions. Everyone must wear a mask. Masks will be provided for those who do not have them. Readers who have questions or concerns may call the blood donor center at 717-544-0170, option 2.

one-on-one music instruction and special outings or field trips when we’re able to do those.” Before the pandemic, REYS offered programming for up to 200 students a week. In recent months, that number has dwindled some, Paden said, but the need for services has not. “With so many of our students learning online for school, they are looking for a place to find connections, friendships and mentoring,” she explained. “They can use
in-person help with their homework. They are looking for extra support, love and personal interaction.” At one point, REYS had to cut its programming down to biweekly events for students, but recently, weekly programming began again. “We knew it was really important that students have an opportunity to come in at least once a week and have that point of connection with other people,” Paden stated. This year has been difficult for REYS, with a major
fundraiser and events canceled, but the staff has been working hard to continue providing for the community. In December, staff members held a “Christmas To Go” party for students to stop in for a few minutes to play a game or two and pick up some presents and food. “It was really important to us to hold our Christmas party in some way or another, so we came up with this idea where we could be safe but still welcome students,” Paden explained.

Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.
Neighbors Group Slates Meeting
Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems
The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.
Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.
Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.
More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.
Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.
And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.
Now Explore Your Options At Gardner’s Mattress & More, we’ve curated over 24 Cuddle Zone sleep systems for you to see in person, 7 days a week. Private appointments are available. People enjoy our shopping experience, in part because there’s no sales pressure ever. And we have over 200 verified stories of customer delight for your review. Paden, who took over as executive director in July, said coming on board during a pandemic has been challenging, but she’s seen nothing but support from the community. “The pandemic has significantly impacted our fundraising abilities, and I’m really hoping and praying that we’re able to do events and activities this year,” she stated, noting that the nonprofit relies heavily on community donations. “I’m new to this job, and I’m new to the Mount Joy area, and it has been wonderful to see the buy-in here for everything we do. I don’t have to sell REYS to the community, because people know us and love us, and they support our mission.” For more information on REYS, including programming schedules, readers may visit https://reys.org.
Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Jan. 26, from 9 to 10:45 a.m. A special section will be provided for those who wish to socially distance and/or wear masks. LuAnn Wise will speak on the topic “Think About W hat You Think About.” Wise will talk about rejecting unhealthy, negative thought patterns that control one’s actions and reactions and replacing them with God-honoring thoughts so that one may experience peace, joy and contentment even in difficult times. Plans for the annual Rose and Shamrock Celtic Festival and Feis, slated to occur in February, have been suspended due to the uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Each year, the festival brings thousands of dancers, musicians, and fans of
Celtic culture to downtown Lancaster. It is possible that the dance and music competitions can still take place in an altered form to reduce crowding and prioritize everyone’s health and safety. All other elements of the festival, including
bands, vendors, cultural presentations, and food, have been canceled for this year. The festival board, led by chair Esther Pujol, plans to bring back the festival in 2022. Updates will be posted at www.roseandshamrock.org.

The group, supported by Landis Communities, will continue to meet on the fourth Sunday of each month. Meetings will be held via Zoom until further notice and will return to Landis Communities as soon as it is again possible. The monthly meetings provide a place for those who have a loved one living with mental illness to learn and share their experiences. This is the first time the church will be holding an event featuring free soup but not the first time the church has offered a drive-through format. The organizers were inspired by a free takeout ham dinner offered during the church’s drive-through Nativity in December, said organizer Kris Gray. “The free ham dinner was so well received that we wanted to offer another free food event to share the love of Jesus with our community,” Gray noted. “Homemade soup is a great comfort food and perfect for warming up during these cold days.” The event will feature chicken corn noodle soup. “A family in the church makes

By focusing on its roof, the Associated Builders and Contractors Keystone Chapter (ABC Keystone) is working to go green. The chapter installed a rooftop solar array on its 31,000-square-foot training facility at 135 Shellyland Road, Manheim, in December. The solar panels will provide ABC Keystone with 60% to 65% of its electrical energy and represent a trend for efficiency throughout the building, said G. David Sload, chapter president-CEO. “It is always our goal to be good stewards of our resources and energy consumption, and we strive to do our part for the environment,” he said. W hen the training facility was built in 2015, it was not initially costeffective to install solar panels, he noted, but advances in technology have now made it possible. At the time of construction, builders planned ahead and constructed a roof with a slope and direction to maximize sun exposure as well as materials to bear the additional weight of the array. In addition to the solar array, the training facility features LED fixtures throughout the building as well as motion sensor-controlled room lights and large windows to allow shop and classroom spaces to be used without lights. The facility’s HVAC equipment was also designed to be energy efficient. “We are confident that by now utilizing solar energy as well, we are keeping our carbon footprint to a minimum,”
Sload said. The training facility hosts students in apprenticeship programs across nine trades in the construction industry. The solar panels are not only allowing the facility to be greener but are also providing a unique learning experience for students, Sload noted. “Part of the electrical curriculum is about solar (power),” he explained. “This will give us a great opportunity to have access to an actual real-life array instead of just learning through a book. We’ll actually be able to take students onto the roof to see how everything operates and have a hands-on experience.” As systems age throughout the building, Sload said he expects more energy-efficient solutions to be installed. “Our goal will always be to replace outdated systems with modern technology,” he stated. “We are committed to using green energy sources.”

Part of the vision of Mennonite education in general and Kraybill Mennonite School in particular is to serve others, especially during the Christmas season. Every year the school chooses a local organization to support with gifts in lieu of children exchanging gifts in their classrooms. This year, the
school decided to partner with Mount Joy Helping Services, located on the corner of Mount Joy and Concord streets in Mount Joy, to provide various food and household items for people who are experiencing hardship this winter. Students and their families contributed food items, gift cards, and The fourth-graders displayed the donated items in household supplies. Kraybill Mennonite School’s lobby.
