Mount Joy Minnie To Deliver Forecast The stretch of daylight hours each day is already starting to increase as the calendar flips closer to the official start of spring, but groundhogs soon will have their annual moment to shine and declare whether the weather itself will yield six more weeks of winter or an early spring. Mount Joy Minnie will make her prognostication on Groundhog Day, Sunday, Feb. 2, at the Rotary clock located at the intersection of Marietta Avenue and East Main Street in downtown Mount Joy. The community is invited to attend the festivities, which will begin with an See Minnie pg 5

theme will be “The Heart of the Forest.” The event will honor young congenital heart disease survivor Shiloh Moran of Mount Joy. Shiloh was only a few weeks old when she underwent open heart surgery to correct four congenital heart defects. Children born with critical congenital heart defects like Shiloh’s have a much greater chance to enjoy a long and healthy life than they could only a few decades ago thanks to the advanced detection and surgical interventions available today. Shiloh’s parents, Austin and Addie Moran, will share their story as part of the annual Open Your Heart appeal. The Lancaster Heart Ball will also include silent and live auctions, a special performance by See Heart Ball pg 3

Addie and Austin Moran, whose daughter Shiloh is a congenital heart disease survivor, will share their story at the Lancaster Heart Ball.

“Tim, I know today is a workday for the project, but can I go to the Bible teaching this morning instead?” When Friends In Action (FIA) executive director Tim Johnston was approached with this question by a Rama Cay villager named Pete it was a moment to rejoice. Headquartered in Middletown, FIA supports mission work in areas of limited infrastructure worldwide by using construction projects and other practical service to spread the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to people who have never heard it before. FIA has been at work among the Rama Cay people of Nicaragua since 2004, when village leaders invited volunteers to help with community See Friends In Action pg 3

Restaurants, caterers, breweries, bakeries, wineries, chocolatiers, and other food and beverage vendors from throughout the region will be vying for prizes and bragging rights at A Taste of Western Lancaster County. The 12th annual celebration will take place from 4:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, at the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. Proceeds from the 21-and-older event will benefit the library and the service projects of the Elizabethtown Rotary Club. Throughout all three levels of the library, people may sample appetizers, entrees, soups, salads, side dishes, snacks, desserts, and beverages from local businesses serving the greater Elizabethtown area. Elizabethtown Public Library staff member Meghan Phillips, who is cochairing the event with Rotarian Kevin Engle, explained that attendees will each receive tickets to vote for their favorites in various categories by placing a ticket in the container at the vendor of their choice. “We have a lot of favorites coming back this year,” noted Phillips. Winners at last year’s event included The Gathering Place for Best of Show and Best Appetizer, Fuego Latino for Best Entrée, Cox Brewing Company for Best Beverage, and Spence Candies for Best Dessert. “It’s a lot of fun because the returning vendors know what to expect now and are very competitive,” said library staff member Aimee Nelson, who has been on the planning committee for five years. Live music will be performed by local artists on two levels of the library, adding to the ambiance of the event, which is

referred to by many as “an Elizabethtown reunion.” “It’s a really solid partnership between the library and the Rotary,” noted Phillips, adding that numerous people throughout the community pitch in to make the event a success. On the day of the event, members of the Elizabethtown Area High School football team volunteer their time by coming in to the library to remove extra furniture and rearrange things as needed - turning what could be a long, labor-intensive undertaking into a quick project. “They’re the unsung heroes, because they’re not here on the night of the event, but they really help to make it all possible,” Phillips remarked. Elizabethtown DeMolay members faithfully volunteer their time by running the coat check each year at A Taste of Western Lancaster County. “The biggest way to support the event is to come,” Phillips added. “We’ve sold out of tickets early for the past few years.” Tickets for A Taste of Western Lancaster County may be purchased at the Elizabethtown Coffee Company, located in the library; from a Rotarian; or by visiting http://tinyurl.com/twlc2020. Tickets are limited. Kiwanis Club members have been working with Mount Joy Borough on plans for the proposed pavilion, which will be located at the site of the former tennis courts that were removed in 2015 due to deterioration. “Because of how much the field is used almost all year long for baseball and softball, a picnic pavilion will get a lot of use, too, Osterhout said. Architectural plans and graphics of the pavilion will be on display at the Denim & Diamonds event. Kiwanis International is a global community of clubs dedicated to improving

the lives of children. One of the last major projects the Norlanco-Rheems chapter assisted in fundraising for was the playground at Rotary Park in Mount Joy completed in 2015. The Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems meets at 7:15 a.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at the Wallick-O’Connor House reception center, 16 E. Main St., Mount Joy. businesses, churches, and individual donors, in 2019 FIA brought clean water to more than 14,000 West Africans through well-drilling efforts; provided medical, dental, and vision assistance to more than 1,200 Bolivians along the Amazon River through the El Misionero riverboat ministry; and taught life and trade skills and God’s word to hundreds of students from Papua New Guinea, Nicaragua, Vanuatu, and Moldova through educational sponsorship efforts. The organization also impacted more than 215,000 villagers from remote bush regions of Brazil and Bolivia through the 24/7 broadcasts of Christian teaching and music on Inspiracion’s radio; provided more than 4,000 inmates in Papua New Guinea with water, biscuits, and prison ministry; and assisted nearly 150 Rama Cay through community transformation efforts in Nicaragua. Volunteers are welcome to sign up for trips in 2020. People with construction skills may be interested in volunteering to complete a Rama Cay laundry and shower house in May or to help develop a conference center in Vanuatu in June. In August, FIA will break ground on a massive five-year Water And Sanitation Health (WASH) project to bring 3,500 NiVan villagers of Vanuatu clean water. Mother-daughter teams are invited to host vacation Bible school and family teaching sessions in Nicaragua this July. rebuilding efforts. The greatest concentration of Rama is a group of 1,400 people who reside on a poverty-stricken island almost forgotten by the mainland. The World Health Organization reports that malnutrition is increasing each year for Rama children. They face widespread malnutrition, inadequate water and sewage systems, and sporadic public health measures. One of the Rama Cay Villagers whose life has been touched by FIA is Pete. Pete used to live in a 10-by-10-foot thatchedroof hut with his common-law wife, four children, and many extended family members. His days alternated between binge drinking and trying to fish and subsistence farm his small plot of depleted soil. When FIA workers invited Pete to learn trade skills, he jumped at the opportunity. For the past eight years, Pete has worked alongside FIA’s volunteer teams to dig wells, install boat docks, construct a pedestrian bridge, and clear land for a community playground and laundry/shower house. The masonry, carpentry, and construction skills Pete learned eventually enabled him to make his own clay bricks and build a new house for his family to move to the mainland. Pete also began attending ongoing Bible classes led by FIA volunteers. Pete’s story is just one example of the thousands of lives impacted through the efforts of FIA. In 2019, more than 70 workers from Pennsylvania traveled with FIA to impact more than 250,000 destitute people in six remote locations around the globe. Thanks to the generosity of local

Minnie from pg 1

Rohrer-Hotaling sought permission from Myers’ wife, Sharon, to bring Minnie back into commission. Each year, attendees are encouraged to use their imagination for the Crazy Hat Contest. Prizes will be awarded for the first-, second-, and third-place winners as voted on by the level of applause and cheering from the crowd. Past years have seen everything from cowboy hats to bonnets to top hats and more. Organized by the Chamber, the event’s advertising and hat contest prizes are sponsored by Keystone Lawn Company. Spot Light Media will sponsor the sound system, and Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185 will serve hot beverages

and refreshments. Shonk, who serves as Minnie’s handler and master of ceremonies at the event, said that Minnie’s prediction last year for six more weeks of winter turned out to be accurate - but it did of course mean that Shonk and Minnie were met with resounding booing. As for this year’s forecast, people will just have to wait and see what the now-beloved puppet declares come sunrise on Groundhog Day. For more information, readers may call Shonk at 717-989-6452 or Meyers at 717653-0773. In the case of inclement weather, the crowd will gather under the portico at Northwest Bank, 101 E. Main St., Mount Joy.

Nancy Shonk is the handler for Mount Joy Minnie, who will make her prediction on Groundhog Day, Feb. 2, at 6:45 a.m. at the Rotary clock inMount Joy.

opening ceremony at approximately 6:45 a.m. Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce executive director Kerry Meyers said that a large number of observers and a lot of noise are the key ingredients needed to wake Minnie from her hibernation. Minnie - a furry brown puppet - was Lancaster County’s first female groundhog to deliver a Groundhog Day prognostication, thanks to the vision of the late Bob Myers, a fun-loving Mount Joy businessman who hosted Minnie’s first Groundhog Day appearance in 2007. Myers died unexpectedly in July 2008, and the festivities took a hiatus before returning in 2010 when Nancy Shonk, then executive director of the Chamber,

With only three games remaining on the regular season, the Donegal boys’ basketball team is still looking for its first league win. Donegal (0-10, 2-15) went 0-3 last week with nonleague losses to West York, 73-34, and Susquehannock, 78-49, and a 58-34 defeat at the hands of Section Three rival ELCO (8-2, 15-3). Led by Gavin Hawk’s 10 points, the Indians struggled to find an offensive edge on the road against the Raiders who had three players score in double digits. Playing from behind early, Donegal was doubled up in the first quarter and trailed 20-10 before ELCO stretched the lead to 34-20 at the half. Donegal found some success from long range as Patrick Summers and

Luke Yunginger drained two three pointers apiece while both Ryan Zuch and Hawk had one each. The Indians struggled with foul shots, however, shooting 15 percent as they went 2-9 at the line in the loss. WRESTLING While the Section Two crown was out of reach for the Indians, they were able to gain a position in the rankings when Donegal (4-2, 8-2) downed Manheim Central (4-2, 4-4) last Wednesday to claim third place behind Lampeter-Strasburg (6-1, 6-1) and champion Garden Spot (7-0, 9-1). Donegal’s 38-28 victory saw the Barons erase a 29-6 lead as they rolled off two consecutive pins and two technical falls to pull within one point at 29-28. Wendall Jones cemented the win when he got the fall over Ethan Himelright at 1:07 of

their 126-pound bout, making it mathematically impossible for Manheim to pull off the comeback with the score 35-28 with only one bout remaining. After Ian Brown opened things up by accepting a forfeit at 138, the two teams swapped decisions with Andrew Small getting the better of Rocco Dougherty at 145 to make it 9-0 before Mason Ober’s 11-1 major decision over Bryce Dombach at 160 put the Indians up 13-3. Maliki Rivera’s decision victory at 170 doubled the Baron’s score, but Ethan Halbleib’s major decision win at 195, which was sandwiched between pins by Will Small (182) and Garrett Blake (220) put Donegal comfortably ahead 29-6. Manheim’s four bout win streak set up Jonas for his match sealing victory before Taj Younger ended the

night with another Indian win, this one an 11-7 decision over Uriah Warner at 132. Over the weekend at Manheim Township High School, four Donegal wrestlers earned medals in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championships. Wrestling began Friday night and concluded on Saturday with the semifinals and finals as well as the completion of the consolation brackets. Garrett Blake turned in a successful weekend as he wrestled his way to a championship matchup with Solanco’s Nick Yannutz which he won with an exciting 3-2 decision. Wrestling up from last year’s tournament where he placed second at 160, Blake claimed 195-pound gold when he secured a takedown in the third period while trailing Yannutz 2-1 and was able to control him the rest of the way. His path to the title included a pin in the opening round over Damien Wolf of Cocalico followed by consecutive technical falls over Ceaser Liniano of Lebanon and ELCO’s John Ball to reach the semifinals. Blake’s 5-0 decision over Parker Owens of L-S in that bout propelled him into the finals and a trip to the podium. Mason Ober (160) and Will Small (182) both fell just short in their respective quests for gold as they claimed second place medals and ended their weekend in agonizing fashion. Ober took on Hempfield’s Ian Edwards who earlier turned in a semifinal upset of number one seed Kole Marley to reach the finals, pinning him in just under a minute. Tied

at 3-3, Edwards used an escape and subsequent takedown in the third period to pull out the 6-4 win. On his way to Edwards, Ober earned a technical fall in the round of sixteen over Conestoga Valley’s Nate Kirchner, a 12-10 sudden victory over Garden

Ruhl wrestled back with a fall over ELCO’s Ben Wargo and Warwick’s Hayden Benner following a loss in the quarterfinals to Zachary Shelley from LampeterStrasburg which was preceded by a round of sixteen fall over Jesse Lonon from Conestoga Valley. Picking up a first period fall over Warwick’s Blake Minnich in the round of sixteen at 170 pounds, Joel Grillo fell into the consolation bracket following a quarterfinal loss to Manheim

Township’s Cade Clancy. After earning a 15-7 major decision over Garden Spot’s Ethan Eberly, Grillo dropped his next two, the second of which came in the seventh-place match against Maliki Rivera which landed him in eighth place. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Donegal’s struggles continued as they lost the first two games of the week before getting a much-needed win over McCaskey (1-9, 3-16) on Saturday. The lady Indians lost a nonleague matchup with Elizabethtown (6-4, 13-6) 60-41 on Wednesday and then dropped a 65-50 contest to section rival ELCO (6-4, 10-8) on Friday before earning a 79-48 victory over the Red Tornado to end the week. Kiera Baughman scored 18 points and Victoria Burton added 12 against the visiting Bears who went on a 15-4 run to open the game and led 24-14 at halftime. Donegal managed to gain a n advantage in the fourth, scoring 17 to the Bear’s 13, but were outscored 36-27 over the second half of play. Taking on the lady Raiders at home on Friday night, the Indians looked prepared to turn things around as they opened a 13-8 lead, but ended up trailing by two at the end of the first half. Baughman led the team with 25 points and went four of six from the foul line, but the host Indians were slowly left behind as ELCO went on a 40-27 tear

through the second half. Saturday provided some muchneeded relief for the ladies as they took it to the Red Tornado on the road and broke a five game losing streak. Baughman scored a game high 25 points and along with Rylee Smith’s 15 and 14 from Lydia DeBruin, Donegal broke open an 18-18 first quarter tie, outscoring McCaskey 61-29 over the final three to run away with the victory.

Joseph Hess takes the ball to the basket for the Indians during their 73-34, nonleague setback at West York last Monday.

Elizabethtown College professor of political science and endowed chair of international studies Oya Dursun-Ozkanca recently published the book “Turkey-West Relations: The Politics of Intra-alliance Opposition.” Dursun-Ozkanca’s book provides an examination of Turkey growing further apart from its Western allies. Since 2003, Dursun-Ozkanca has been researching and writing about Turkish foreign policy. In her book, she dissects six case studies regarding Turkish foreign policy over the past nine years, exploring an array of topics including Turkey’s foreign policy in relation to various nations and organizations, the refugee crisis, defense procurement, energy policies, and more. According to DursunOzkanca, the book draws on extensive fieldwork and more than 200 semi-structured elite interviews conducted with

On Monday, Feb. 3, the community is invited to experience A Taste of Manheim Christian Day School (MCDS) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the school, which is located at 686 Lebanon Road, Manheim. Food, live entertainment, and a scavenger hunt will be among the family-friendly activities planned, and people will have an opportunity to tour the school and meet faculty and staff members. The evening will kick off with a free taco dinner being served from 6 to 7:30 p.m. or while supplies last, followed by an ice cream social starting at 7:30 p.m. Clown and juggler duo Cissy and the Man, of WJTL Kids Cookie Break Fest fame, will be at the school to greet and interact with children. MCDS guitar students will play acoustic music. Children may participate in a scavenger hunt - with variations geared toward different age groups - to receive a prize. All guests will be eligible to enter a drawing to win four free tickets to “Queen Esther” at Sight & Sound Theatres in Ronks. Those tickets will be valid for a performance between March 14 and Dec. 31. MCDS principal Jennifer Knecht, who has been serving at the school for nine years, said that MCDS wanted to offer something new in lieu of their traditional winter open house. “We want to have a community event so that people can come in and see our school, and they can meet our teachers and see some of the things that we do - in a fun environment,” shared Knecht. “We’re really excited about it.”

Teachers will lead art, physical fitness, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) activities for children throughout the scavenger hunt. “It’s free to the community,” emphasized Knecht. “It’s also important to us that people will realize that we are more than just the Manheim community. We love the fact that we are embedded here in Manheim, but we serve students from all over.” MCDS began in 1952 and offers a Christian education for children from prekindergarten age through eighth grade. In addition to Manheim, Knecht noted that students attend from Elizabethtown, Landisville, Lebanon, Lititz, Mount Joy, and beyond. Currently, approximately 200 students are enrolled at the school, which has 30 faculty and staff members. “We truly do believe that this is a family atmosphere,” Knecht shared. “We love these children like their parents love them.” “We do a great job of connecting with families, and we walk what we talk. We’re going to do everything we can to make sure that their children’s needs are met,” continued Knecht. “We are a lot more than just academics. Our foundation is Christianity and without the promise of eternity, it doesn’t matter how good your academics are.” Enrollment for the 2020-21 school year at MCDS opens in February. People may ask questions and learn more about registration and tuition at A Taste of MCDS. For more information on the event or the school itself, people may call 717-6654300 or visit www.manheimchristian.org.
