ODC Small Group Participants Go To Work In Mount Joy By Ann Mead Ash

Daryl Strine, direct support professional with Occupational Development Center (ODC), 640 Martha Ave., Lancaster, is very proud of the crew he takes to Kinsey’s Inc., in Mount Joy, two to three days a week as part of ODC’s small group employment program. He cannot say enough about the ODC participants’ skills and work ethic. At the warehouse, part of Strine’s job is to move the boxes groups of up to four participants make as one of a variety of duties they complete, from the area where they are constructed to another location in the warehouse. The more boxes the participants complete, the more trips Strine makes. “They keep me moving,” he said. “On a busy day, I do 20,000 steps in four hours.”

According to ODC executive director Gregg Richards, the program is designed to give participants a chance to work in an integrated environment. “Small group employment is a crew of program participants who go to a workplace with a program supervisor and work side by side with employees of the local business, (where they) are paid at minimum wage or above,” explained Richards, who added that businesses may utilize a crew for seasonal work or on a regular basis. Strine said that ODC participants were carefully selected for the program based on skills. Over the course of a year, Strine worked to cull a list of 40 possible participants down to eight workers and four alternates. “They were competing for positions,” noted Strine, who added that the participants work four hours per day, clocking in and out and working alongside other Kinsey’s employees.

Red for Women, a social initiative designed to dispel myths and raise awareness of heart disease and stroke as the No. 1 killer of women, as well as to empower women to take charge of their heart health. Go Red for Women aims to encourage awareness of the issue of women and heart disease and also action to save

more lives. In 2010, the AHA set a strategic goal of reducing death and disability from cardiovascular disease and strokes by 20 percent while improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent by the year 2020. Joanne Ranck Dirks, assistant manager for the Farm & Gardens at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, is looking forward to the interactive segment of the upcoming workshop focusing on traditional seeds and Pennsylvania Dutch foods. “All of us eat food, and many of (the attendees) will be gardeners,” shared Dirks. “When we make space for discussion, everyone can join in.” The winter workshop, which will be held at the museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Feb. 23, will be broken into two parts. The 9 a.m. to noon session will include an interactive session on seeds native to the Americas and the Three Sisters garden method. The second session, which will also take place on Feb. 23, will run from 1 to 4 p.m. It will feature a lecture on the Pennsylvania Dutch kitchen garden and its influence on the distinctive cuisine associated with this ethnic group. Both sessions will be presented by William Woys Weaver, an internationally known food historian, who makes his home in Devon. He is the author of a number of cookbooks, including the award-winning “Pennsylvania Dutch Country Cooking.” According to Dirks, Weaver has donated seeds to the Landis Valley heirloom seed program. She shared that Weaver became interested in seeds when he discovered that his grandfather, an avid gardener, had been working to preserve seeds from traditional plants. “(Weaver) committed to growing (the seeds) and keeping them growing,” said Dirks, who added that heirloom seeds must be grown to keep the species alive. “When you talk about seed preservation, it means growing them in the garden on a rotating basis,” she explained. The morning session of the upcoming workshop will be divided into three parts. Part one will explore the impact of Native American seeds. “It’s amazing how many have origins in South and Central America,” said Dirks. “(The seeds) migrated north with the Native American peoples.” The workshop will include time for round table discussion and a presentation on Three Sisters gardening, which focuses on growing corn, beans, and squash. Dirks said that the practice originated in South America. “(Three Sisters gardening) is a Native American term and a practice the

early settlers would have learned from their Native American neighbors, and it still works,” she explained. During the afternoon workshop, Weaver will delve into the Pennsylvania Dutch kitchen garden and the foods that this type of garden brought to the tables of different regions of Pennsylvania. The four-part session will begin with the seeds the immigrants brought with them. “Some of those seeds had also come from South America,” said Dirks, explaining that Spanish and Italian explorers brought seeds back to their homelands and that those seeds moved north through Europe and then returned to America with Pennsylvania settlers. Another segment of the afternoon presentation will focus on the foods that are traditional among Pennsylvania Dutch families. “(The kitchen garden) was the woman’s garden close to the kitchen,” said Dirks, who noted that four-square gardens usually contained carrots, bush beans, and pole beans, with

a border of medicinal herbs, along with cooking herbs. Potatoes, cabbages, and onions that were used in bulk were grown in large fields. According to Dirks, Weaver will also spend time discussing the distinctions between types of Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine. “In the third part (of the afternoon session, Weaver) will talk about Pennsylvania Dutch cooking and how it’s not all the same,” said Dirks. “There are (foods) our grandparents and great grandparents

cooked, that we don’t cook so much,” she added, noting that schnitz un knepp, a dish made with ham, apples, and dumplings, is not cooked as often as it once was. There is a cost to attend each workshop. Readers who would like more information or would like to register may visit www.landisvalleymuseum.org and click on Education & Workshops or call 717-569-0401. Pictured on front: William

The National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, will open its doors to members of the Lower Susquehanna Valley Modular Railroaders (LSVMR), who will present a special exhibit at the museum from Saturday, Feb. 2, through Saturday, March 2. The members of the LSVMR build, display, and operate layouts throughout central Pennsylvania, and the group has presented an exhibit at the National Watch and Clock Museum for the last several years. This year, another 4 feet have been added to the 40-foot display of previous years. Timekeeping has been integral to railroads and modern travel in general since the beginning of rail

travel, which allowed movement from place to place at a pace never seen before. Railroads and their time schedules forced the establishment of standard time zones and the development of highly accurate timepieces. The LSVMR display will allow the museum to honor the significance of railroads in the history of horology and provide a visual and auditory experience for its visitors. The LSVMR is a group of Ogauge enthusiasts from the lower Susquehanna Valley region of Pennsylvania. The group originated in July 2009 when some customers and employees of CoolTrains Toys and Hobbies in Salunga came together to form the LSVMR, and the group has

since expanded. “One of the nice things about our club is that we are just a group of people who share a mutual love of trains,” shared LSVMR president Travis Moody. “Unlike other clubs, we do not model any specific location or era. Everything we do is for the fun of the hobby, which is why you will see all kinds of different things on our layout. From carnivals to Lego towns to the drive-in movie theater, no two setups are the same, often captivating the imagination of many children. All our trains are memberowned, so there’s always something new rolling by.” LSVMR members look forward to showing off their model train

layouts to visitors to the National Watch and Clock Museum from Feb. 2 to March 2. There is no museum charge to view the railroad display. From December through March, the museum’s hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. From April through November, the museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the museum is also open on Mondays. Students Present Winter Projects Groundhog Day Event Posted Anchor Christian Academy students recently completed extensive Winter Term Projects. Students chose a topic that piqued their interest and worked under the guidance of a teacher in the appropriate subject area. The projects were presented during a recent Winter Term Project Night. Students were challenged to research their topic in detail in order to give an oral presentation as well as produce a written paper and visual aid to demonstrate what they learned. The research project gave students the opportunity

to grow in knowledge and to ex perience the process of researching, gathering pertinent information, producing a paper, constructing a visual aid, and being versed enough in the chosen subject matter to present to the public. Some of topics included knife forging, cheese making, sewing a historically accurate dress from the 1800s, creating a new language, the history of sailing ships, interior design and room makeovers, raising broiler chickens, the creation of economic systems, the production

of vinyl records, quilt making, comparing sneakers, improving running times, and visiting orphanages in Peru. Ninth-grader Katie Gunderson did a Winter Term Project on “A Day in the Life: 1805.”

Factory is an offshoot of the Lancaster Creative Factory and has been offering art classes and programming for children, youths, and adults since 2016. Mychal LaVia, who facilitates workshops at the Columbia Creative Factory, said that the use of the space had been donated to the organization for the past two years, but the building went up for sale in 2018. The Creative Factory team decided to begin the process of fundraising in hopes of purchasing it as a permanent location. Otherwise, the group will need to find a new location when the building sells. According to Andrea Campbell of the Columbia Creative Factory, the cost to purchase and make a few needed upgrades to the building will be $425,000, which means that the organization must raise $275,000 by

The approximately 11,000square-foot space currently has a first-floor gallery and a community space that is utilized for programming, as well as basement storage and two levels of upstairs studio space that can be rented out to artists. The Columbia Creative Factory frequently partners with the Columbia Borough School District (CBSD), Our Lady of the Angels School, and other local businesses and community groups. Kevin Lehman, founder and director of the Lancaster Creative Factory, located at 580 S. Prince St., Lancaster, said that continuing to offer community work space and programming is a major part of the plans for the Columbia Creative Factory as the team dreams of owning its current operating space. Team members also hope to offer even more programming for adults and families in the Columbia area. LaVia said that seeing the difference the Creative Factory has made in the community during the past two years has been exciting, and he hopes to see the positive effect continue to gain momentum going forward. “We’re really interested in creativity and what it can do for people, even as far as its healing potential,” Lehman said. “People can use creativity, so wherever we can help them to do that we’d like to bring more opportunities. We’ve got ideas (for programming and other events), but it’s really flexible and based on what the community needs.” “It’s really a community space, and we really feel like we’re here for the community,” said Lehman, adding that the team members at the Creative Factory believe they can be a part of the spark that draws more people to Columbia for all that the borough has to offer. To donate to the Columbia Creative Factory building campaign, interested individuals may visit https://columbia creativefactory.org/. Community outreach manager Lori Shenk explained that when NWEMS was planning to organize its first food drive six years ago, February seemed like a good time of year. “This seems like a time of year when there is more need but less emphasis on

donating,” Shenk commented. Food drive organizers reached out to the local food banks to ascertain the greatest needs. In addition to nonperishable food items such as canned fruit, canned or instant potatoes, pasta sauce, crackers, canned tuna or chicken, jelly, ground coffee, and bottled water or juice, other donations that will be accepted include toiletry items, such as laundry detergent, shampoo, deodorant, and tissues. A full list of most-needed items can be found at www .manheimcentralfoodpantry.org or on the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown Facebook page. According to Shenk, volunteers gather in the first few days of March to sort the donations and divide them up between the food banks according to their needs. After sorting, approximately two ambulance loads of food will be delivered to each food bank. “People have been very generous,” Shenk said of previous years’ donations.

Shenk shared plans for a future program that NWEMS is working to create with Lancaster EMS. The program, still in its infancy, will strive to serve individuals with diagnosis-specific nutrition needs, specifically those with strict income limitations. Initial efforts will focus on developing the program in partnership with the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown. The service is slated to offer food items for individuals with diabetes, heart conditions, or other issues that require a specific diet. “Our hope is that we can develop a sustainable service that can be the model for expansion into other communities,” Shenk said. “This isn’t part of the February Food Drive, but we are starting to find ways to address these types of needs over the next year.” For more information on NWEMS and its service to the community, readers may visit www.nwems86.org.

Braving The Cold For A Polar Plunge It takes a special person to willingly run into the frigid waters of the Susquehanna River in February, but year after year the York County Polar Plunge draws a sizeable crowd of willing “plungers” - as the participants are affectionately dubbed. The 11th annual York County Polar Plunge is set to take place from 9:30

a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, along the Susquehanna River in front of John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville. Not only are folks willing to dip into the waters amidst sometimes freezing temperatures, but many also go all out and participate in the annual costume contest. “Last year the winner of the most original (costume) was a tree,” recalled organizer

Robyn Liggins-Smith, adding that the costume contest is her favorite portion of the event. “We have superheroes, ballet dancers, swimsuits, Hawaiian dancers, Where’s Waldo … just about anything you can think of has joined in the costume contest,” Liggins-Smith shared. York Revolution mascot DownTown joins the fun each year by helping to entertain the crowd, going so far as to actually plunge in his costume. Another staple is the team that starts the waves of plungers, which is made up of current and retired police officers from throughout York County and led by Lt. Dan Aikey of the York County Police Department. Registration and sign-in will open at 9:30 a.m., followed by opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. and the costume parade and contest at 10:45 a.m. Awards will be given for the best costume and most original costume. Plungers will begin assembling in waves around 11:45 a.m., and the plunge will start at noon. Special Olympics PA York County (SOYC) athletes will lead each wave of participants to the river. Plungers may dip in just a toe or go all in for a total of three minutes. Heated tents will be set up for participants to change into dry clothes afterward. Coffee, hot chocolate, water, and snacks will also be available. To register in advance - which organizers recommend for anyone interested in

Proceeds from the 11th annual York County Polar Plunge, set to take place along the Susquehanna River in front of John Wright Restaurant in Wrightsville on Feb. 2, will support the 360 athletes involved in the Special Olympics of PA York County. avoiding waiting in long lines - as an individual or a team, readers may visit www.specialolympicsyorkcounty.org. “There is no cost to register - everyone and anyone can plunge,” explained Liggins-Smith. “However, this is a fundraiser, so we ask that you get sponsors.” Participants who raise at least $25 will receive a T-shirt, and those who raise at least $100 will receive a hooded sweatshirt. Golden Plunger awards - which are actually golden plungers - are given to the individual and the team that have raised the most money. All proceeds will support the 360 athletes

Ken Mueller, public relations and development manager for ODC, said that the skill set of participants has been a good fit with Kinsey’s, which makes archery supplies and outdoor

gear. Mueller added that many businesses have a variety of tasks that might also be a good fit for ODC individuals, including light assembly, collating mailings, and putting kits together. Strine

day and during lunch breaks,” said Russell, who first suggested ODC participants help with box production in early 2016 based on her sister’s 40 years of experience at ODC. “The crew from ODC arrives with a positive attitude that’s contagious throughout the building,” Russell continued. “The way they support one another to accomplish the goals we’ve laid out for them is inspiring. We should all learn a lesson from them.” Strine complimented Kinsey’s employees, saying, “Interaction between Kinsey’s employees and participants has been excellent.” According to Mueller, integrating participants into community businesses is an ultimate goal for ODC. Strine agreed, saying, “All (participants) have designated disabilities, but I like to look at what they can do.” Russell added that ODC crew members have been willing to try new tasks, following instructions compiled in a binder. “The binder was made up so that each crew could work independently, making the final projects consistent for Kinsey’s and giving (the participants) a feeling of success and independence,” said Russell. “We’re so proud to be working with such a wonderful organization.” Emerson said he likes the work, but he also enjoys receiving a paycheck. His favorite thing to spend his money on is pizza. ODC is actively seeking more employers who could benefit from the talents and abilities offered by participants. Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.odcenter.org or call 717-397-4269.

noted that the ODC participants in the small group program have also folded and packed items such as T-shirts, archery equipment, traps, and gloves. Emerson, one of the small group participants, said that his favorite job is making boxes, especially the large boxes. “We try our best (to make as many boxes as we can),” said Emerson, who also folds T-shirts. Emerson appreciates the excitement of meeting new people, but he said he does get nervous sometimes when talking to people he does not know. The infamous chicken dance, set for 11:15 a.m., will be performed by all of the chicken plungers in attendance. Liggins-Smith said that last year’s 10th anniversary Polar Plunge raised a total of $76,000 for SOYC. “The weather was actually nice, if you consider 34 degrees nice, and that was the air temperature,” recalled Liggins-Smith. “The water temperature was about 21 degrees.” Nevertheless, approximately 750 plungers stepped up to - or into - the challenge.

Donegal Matmen Host Manheim Central by Vaughn Brown

With the 2018-2019 regular season at an end, save for a few matches here and there, the Donegal Indians (4-3) found themselves in the middle of the

pack at fourth place in Section Two last week. They finished up at home where the Green and White hosted the Barons of Manheim Central (6-1) who proved to be unwelcome guests, hanging a 45-19 defeat on the Indians.

At one point, down by only six, and later cutting a 16-point deficit to nine, Donegal had no answer for Manheim’s upper weights which closed the door on any hope of an Indian comeback. In all, Donegal won six

bouts but did no better than Will Small’s 14-6 major decision of Owen Von Stetten at 182 pounds. With Donegal already trailing 27-12, Small scored the only points of the first period with a takedown. Working from the bottom to start the second, he leveraged a reverse into two near-fall points before conceding the escape for a 6-1 lead. While Small was able to work two more takedowns in the period, Von Stetten proved tough to hold down, escaping both times before the buzzer sounded on Small’s 10-3 advantage. Von Stetten chose to work towards his strength in the third as he took the down position and was rewarded with yet another escape, one of two for the Baron in the period, however Small’s two takedowns ensured victory. Donegal’s next win came four bouts later when Ethan Herr closed out the match at 106 with a 10-3 decision over Uriah Warner. Herr built a five-point lead heading into the final period before giving up any points when Warner worked to neutral but found

the mat again thanks to Herr’s third takedown of the bout. His reversal pulled him to within six at 7-3, but Herr escaped and took him down once again to end the night. Dylan Bowers first put Donegal on the board with a late reversal in the third period of his 126-pound bout with Dakota Thomas to break a 5-5 tie and eventually hold on for the decision making it 9-3. Back-to-back falls by Manheim at 132 and 138 opened the lead to 21-3. Donegal answered with consecutive decision wins beginning with Joseph Fox at 145 who used a takedown and doubled up on two-point near falls to score the only six points of the second period against Logan Hess in a 10-4 win. Mason Ober followed at 152 and blew open a 4-3 lead in the third by hitting a reversal and turning Clay Bedil for a two count and then earning an escape as well as a takedown for the 11-5 victory. Cael Rapp’s three takedowns resulted in a 6-1 win at 170, setting the stage for Small and Herr.

BASKETBALL That elusive W remained outside the Donegal boys’ grasp as the winless Indians gave up two more losses in two weeks. They came within five points of Northern Lebanon on January 15 in a 48-43 defeat to the Vikings and then met a tough West York squad which had its way with the Indians during a 92-45 loss. Reed Licopoli and Logan Nauman each hit double digits in the game with Northern Lebanon, scoring 11 and 10 points respectively, but it was not enough to prevent the Vikings from holding on for the slim victory. Josh Bower’s 17 points and Alex Folmer’s 12 led Northern Lebanon’s attack. Donegal opened up a 12-8 lead in the first quarter, but then watched the Vikings go on a 25-12 run spanning the second and third to lead 33-24 heading into the final frame. While the Indians were cold shooting from outside the arc with only two threepointers on the night, Northern Lebanon’s sharp shooters were active,

hitting on seven from downtown to help during that stretch. In the fourth, the Indians put up a spirited effort, doing four better than the Vikes at 19-15, but could not overcome the damage inflicted in the quarters prior. Jacob Shoemaker scored six points on the night followed by Luke Yunginger (5), Ryan Zuch (4), Conor Wilken (3), Zion Gibbs (2), and Joe Turbedsky (2). West York had too much offense for the Indians who, despite scoring 45 points, did not have the defense to slow down the Bulldogs. All five starters scored in the double digits for West York while Nauman (14), Licopoli (12) and Zuch (11) answered in kind for Donegal. Trailing 49-22 at halftime, the Indians were victims of deadly long-range shots by the visitors who drained an amazing 11 three-pointers to light up the night. Donegal’s best quarter, offensively, came out of the break when the Indian’s put up 16.

Licopoli, who accounted for Donegal’s lone three pointer in the game, also was 5-9 at the foul line with Zuch (3-4) picking up the remainder of the free throws for the team. Shoemaker added four while Gibbs and Gavin Hawk each scored two apiece. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL It was a difficult stretch for the girls who dropped into fourth place in Section Four with two losses of their own. Donegal (3-6) played Northern Lebanon January 18 and lost 62-42 before dropping a 55-47 contest to Elizabethtown. Donegal caught a red-hot Northern Lebanon team who, with the victory over the Indians, were 4-1 over their prior five games. Zara Zerman torched the ladies for 28 points and helped the Vikings to a 33-19 lead at the break. On Donegal’s side, it was Kiera Baughman (16), Cheyenne Livelsberger (10) and Summer Steffy (10) who led the charge. The Indians trailed by only five at the end of the first quarter of play, but a

Donegal’s Cael Rapp works to complete a takedown of Manheim Central’s Connor Carvell during his 6-1 win at 170 pounds in a Section Two pairing in Mount Joy last Wednesday.

20-11 run in the second by Northern Lebanon dug the hole that was too deep for Donegal to get out of. From there the Vikings were able to coast through until the end. Hurting the Indians was a paltry 7-13 effort at the foul line while the Vikes drained all but two of their 19 attempts. Baughman accounted for the only three-point shot Donegal made while Livelsberger went 4-7 from the line and Steffy was 2-4. Morgan Creek, Alexandra Daly, and Victoria Burton all added two points each. Another high roller loomed for Donegal in their game with Elizabethtown and she did not disappoint, the Bears that is. Marena Lonardi, dropped a career-high 33 points on Donegal. If it

is any comfort, Lonardi has been recruited by Loch Haven University and recently landed a spot in the 1000point club. She accounted for 11 of Elizabethtown’s 15 first quarter points and helped build a 26-19 lead by halftime. Donegal fell further behind in the third quarter but pulled to within five at 51-46 at the end of the fourth before Lonardi stepped in for the final four points of the game. Baughman scored 17 points to lead the Donegal charge and was the only representative to hit double digits for Donegal. Livelsberger poured in eight as did Steffy while Creek added six and Maddie Gohn and Daly hit on four.

Renovation of the new Columbia Animal Shelter, located at the site of the former Vigilant Fire Hall at 265 S. 10th St., Columbia, is nearly complete. Executive director Tammy Loughlin said that the state-of-the-art shelter is slated to officially open to the public in mid-February. Demolition and renovation of the approximately 8,000-square-foot structure began on June 6, 2018. Initial plans were to renovate the interior without making extensive changes to the exterior, but Loughlin noted that as work began it was determined that major alterations to the exterior of the building would also be necessary. Support beams that were signed by previous builders and firefighters still remain intact in order to fulfill the goal of preserving the history of the original structure. The shelter is being funded by the Harold and Judy McKonly Family

Foundation and will operate as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Opening a topnotch cat shelter had been a dream for the late Judy McKonly, and after her passing in August 2017 the McKonly family set things in motion to turn her dream into a reality. According to Loughlin, the mission of the Columbia Animal Shelter is to rescue and rehome at-risk companion animals while providing quality health care and adoption services. “Our goal is to collaborate, communicate, and educate about animal cruelty prevention and the importance of animal rescue and welfare,” stated Loughlin. “Residents will be able to come to our shelter and leave with a new best friend, while also being educated with the knowledge to care for their newest family member.” The shelter is tentatively set to be open on Tuesdays through Sundays, and it will offer a low-cost spay/neuter clinic one day a week by appointment only. It will function primarily as a cat shelter, with accommodations for up to 100 cats. The

cat rooms will feature doors to an enclosed outside area, enabling the animals to go inside and outside at their will and providing space to roam. Initially, the shelter will only allow animal intake from within Columbia Borough to focus on reducing the feral cat population. “There is such a high need here in Columbia that we feel we need to start here before we branch out,” explained Loughlin. Adoption opportunities will be open to all, whether or not they live in Columbia. “Adoptions will be on best fit, not firstcome, first-served,” noted Loughlin. Every animal will receive the necessary shots and vaccinations and will be microchipped before it leaves the shelter. Space for a maximum of 10 dogs has also been allotted at Columbia Animal Shelter. Loughlin said that at least two of those spaces have been reserved for housing dogs rescued by members of the Columbia Borough Police Department. The shelter also features office space, adoption areas where people will be able

to meet with their potential pets, and an isolation department where animals will be temporarily placed before their initial exam in order to prevent any potential spread of disease. Loughlin is excited about utilizing the shelter’s community room for youth programs and informational seminars. “Part of what we’re going to offer is a lot of community programs,” she noted. Loughlin was hired as the shelter’s executive director in June 2018 after managing an animal shelter in Westerly, R.I., for more than seven years. Additional staff positions at the facility will include an assistant director, two veterinarians, two veterinary technicians, and two part-time caretakers. Volunteers are welcome, and applications are currently accessible at https://columbia animalshelter.com. Information about the shelter’s grand opening and upcoming events will also be posted on the website and on Instagram at @ColumbiaAnimalShelter.

The Columbia Animal Shelter, located in the former Vigilant Fire Hall, is currently slated to open in mid-February with a grand opening celebration to follow. The shelter will offer animals for adoption and a low-cost spay/neuter clinic one day a week.

The day will begin with a recollection of the past 50 years of Lancaster Cattle Feeders Day and the Lancaster Stockyards by Chet Hughes, former Lancaster County livestock agent. The history of the Virginia Cattlemen’s Association (VCA) and its part in the history of Lancaster County’s beef industry will be reviewed by Reggie Reynolds, member of the VCA board of directors. Next, Dr. Sara Place, senior director of sustainable beef production research at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), will discuss beef sustainability in her presentation “Beyond the Headlines and Toward the Facts.” Later, Dr. Tara Felix will give an update on Penn State’s Calf-Fed Project and

talk about feed efficiency tools. The meeting will also serve as Beef Quality Assurance recertification for attendees who need to update their certificates. Colin Woodall, senior vice president of government affairs at NCBA, and Dr. Steve Loerch, senior associate dean of the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences, are also slated to present at the event. The day’s speakers will be available to converse with attendees individually. Additionally, a trade show with a number of vendors will be part of the event. Registration will open at 8:30 a.m., and coffee and doughnuts will be available. Lunch will be served at 1:15 p.m. A cost has been set per person whether or not the participant stays for lunch. Attendees are asked to register at https://extension.psu .edu/cattle-feeders-day or by calling 877-345-0691 by Monday, Feb. 4. Same-day, walk-in registration will also be available; payment by check or cash will be accepted. For more information, readers may call Fairbairn at 610-696-3500. No dress code has been set for the celebration, but attendees are asked to keep bio-security in mind and wear clothes and boots that have not been in any barns.
