finding unique ways to connect with parishioners over the past year. “We had already arranged to get DVDs of our recorded services to people who don’t have internet capability - and some portable DVD players to those who don’t have DVD players either so as many people as possible have access to worship while we are not meeting together.” For Ash Wednesday, Adams

Little ones are invited to make music at Florin Church of the Brethren during the Little Notes music ministry. The program is held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. on the second, fourth and fifth Thursdays of the month at the church, 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy, and is open for children up to kindergarten age and their caregivers. “Little Notes is a program we offer to introduce children to music,” said Jan Chavez, program director. “We’ll get out a variety of musical instruments for the children to play with.

I’ll play some sing-along songs. I like to include songs they know and pepper in some new ones for them to learn.” The program, which is free, also features play time and other activities. “We’ll have parachute time and snack, and I might play a DVD or do a simple craft or coloring page with the children,” Chavez stated. To stay as safe as possible during COVID-19, the program is held in a large space where participants can spread out, and all snacks are individually wrapped. Chavez also sanitizes all instruments between sessions.

encourages anyone to come out to receive ashes and Communion, adding that the distribution offers a way for the church to connect to the public and provide solace in a particularly difficult time. “Isolation has been such a problem for people throughout the pandemic,” she stated. “Any opportunity we have to safely offer some connection, we want to do that.”

“We’re planning to offer three one-hour blocks (for distribution),” she shared. Ashes will be distributed from 1 to 2 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. in the rear of the church. “We have a portico where people can drive through and receive ashes,” she explained. “And, if they would like, they can also receive Communion. We’ll have individually packaged Communion

for anyone who wants it.” From 3 to 4 p.m., the church will offer ashes in front of its building on Main Street. “This will be an option for anybody who would like to be marked with the cross as they come by,” Adams said, noting that logistics were still being worked out at press time for walk-ups and curbside options. Even though this year posed its unique challenges, the church wanted to keep its traditional Ash Wednesday observation, Adams stated. “Ash Wednesday is important because it’s the beginning of Lent, which is one of the two biggest seasons of the church year,” she remarked. “We wanted to give people the opportunity to have a communal experience as they begin the Lenten season.” Adams noted that all activities will follow COVID-19 protocols, with social distancing and mask wearing, as well as glove use for anyone making physical contact with the public. Along with distribution at the church, St. Mark’s will record a brief Ash Wednesday service of Imposition

“With a passion to serve seniors with lower incomes, Mount Hope is home to 50 residents who need nursing care, said Kris Wilson, director of advancement. “Most seniors at Mount Hope do not have financial resources to cover the cost of their care. A gap of approximately $150 exists between what a senior is able to pay and the cost of their daily care. The drive-through meal provides a way not only to support seniors, but also to serve a warm meal in a dreary season, Wilson noted. “Mount Hope has not done a large banquet-type drivethrough meal before this, but I thought up the idea because winter tends to be very cold and gray - the ‘winter blues’ and people might not feel totally comfortable yet with going out to a restaurant for dining, she explained. “This is a safe option and a nice way to help support a local nonprofit and of course enjoy some wonderful home-cooked Lancaster County comfort food on a cold winter day. This year has been particularly difficult on residents of Mount Hope, Wilson remarked, adding that the retirement community continues to look for creative ways to cover the unanticipated increased cost of safely providing care. Not only will proceeds from the meal help seniors continue to stay at Mount Hope, but the money will also cover additional expenses. “It helps with the purchasing of personal protective equipment, covering unfore-

“Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you?

VFW Posts Youth Singing Contest

4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy?

The VFW Auxiliary has announced a new contest, Get Excited for the Red, White and Blue. Youths ages 6 to 16 are invited to participate by making a video of themselves singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Youths may sing in the musical style of their choice, but they may not change the lyrics. State winners’ entries will advance to the national headquarters by Wednesday, May 5. At the national level, winners in each of the 10 program divisions will receive gift cards. One national winner will receive a gift card for a greater amount, and this student will be announced and his or her video performance will be featured at the National Convention 2021 in Baltimore. Participants may submit entries to youth activities chairman Gwen Avers by Wednesday, March 31, via DVD, flash drive, or an online perform such as YouTube or Vimeo. Youths may also give their entries to their school office, and an Auxiliary member will stop by local schools on Thursday, April 1, to pick up the entries. For the entry form and more details, readers may visit www.vfwauxiliary.org/resources and scroll down to “Youth Activities.” Questions may be directed to Avers at flavers@comcast.net or 717-419-8217.

Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems

If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.

The only sleep systems that provide a Cuddle Zone in the middle, while raising or lowering head or feet sections. This solves common health problems for couples who sleep together. Here are some of the healthy benefits:

The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.

Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.

Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.

More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.

Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.

And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.

Now Explore Your Options At Gardner’s Mattress & More, we’ve curated over 24 Cuddle Zone sleep systems for you to see in person, 7 days a week. Private appointments are available. Dayspring Christian Academy invites families with soon-to-be preschoolers, prekindergartners, and kindergartners to attend an open house on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m. at the school, 120 College Ave., Mountville. The kindergarten open house will feature a Winnie the Pooh Valentine’s Day party that will focus on Proverbs 17:17a. Parents will meet with teachers and learn about the Principle Approach, which is a method of thinking and living by God’s truth and which is the method of education used at Dayspring. Michael Myers, headmaster, noted that children learned this way during the Colonial and founding periods in America. Dayspring offers two distinct kindergarten programs. Children begin learning about a variety of subjects, including science, history, and geography, and they begin reasoning from the Bible, noted Myers. God is viewed as the author of all subjects. Both kindergarten classes use field studies to bring to life what children learn in the classroom. The prekindergarten program is appropriate for children who are 4 years old or who have just turned 5 at the start of the school year. The program is activity-oriented while introducing the

Jim Roberts Pat Paules (fourth from right), administrator of Mount Joy Helping Services, receives a donation of gift cards from employees of the Giant Food Store in Mount Joy.

One day a few weeks ago, Pat Paules almost broke down in tears. These were tears of joy, not sadness, as she accepted a donation to benefit the food bank she oversees as part of Mount Joy Helping Services. “We received $5,000 in gift cards from Giant,” she said. “I was not expecting it, and when they presented the gift, I almost cried.” Employees of the Mount Joy Giant Food Store collected money for the gift cards through at-register donations from customers. “The management team at Giant has always wanted to focus on the people who live in the community they serve,” Paules stated. “This was a way for them to give back. They have always been very supportive of us and everything we do.” In addition to providing financial support, Giant has encouraged employees to spend time volunteering at the organization, she said. The gift cards, which Paules emphasized will be used to purchase items for the food bank and will not be given

directly to clients, will help Mount Joy Helping Services provide items to people in need. “Last year, 1,105 households and 2,585 people used our services,” she remarked. “We had 111 new households sign up within the last year, and that’s the highest amount of new sign-ups we’ve ever had.” Mount Joy Helping Services, located at the corner of Mount Joy and Concord streets, provides food and household items such as toiletries. It also offers financial services and a furniture bank. “There is more need than ever for our services,” said Paules. “I want people to realize we are here for them, and if they need help or are in dire need of food for any reason, I want them to come to us.” Paules said she understands firsthand what clients are feeling. “My dad died when I was 14, and I know how hard my mom worked, so I realize what people are going through,” she explained. “I want them to know there is help available, and I want them to be respected in the community. Help is here.”

Museum Continues STEM Programming Pandemic response programming developed by the North Museum of Nature and Science attained a milestone shortly before Christmas, exceeding a reach of more than one million households. This program is designed to address the emerging educational needs which students, parents, and educators are facing. North Museum @ Home is the e-learning portal and curriculum designed to assist students, parents, and teachers. The program is science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) focused; multi-faceted; and mapped to Next Generation Learning Standards. It consists of downloadable STEM Learning Activity Packs which provide hands-on educational experiences for multiple subjects, including oceans, geology, nature,

dinosaurs, space, agriculture, and more. STEM boxes are a companion to activity packs for educational activities and games. A monthly subscription service was launched in mid-December for children to receive new educational resources by mail. Young learners also have access to many in-house education programs, presented virtually, like field trips and live animal room feedings. Another feature is STEM Storytime @ Home, a virtual book experience for children with STEM related themes. Programming also includes access to the museum’s YouTube channel and the North Museum @ Home Facebook group. The North Museum continues to seek funding from community members and local businesses to support

its pandemic response programming, as some local school districts have continued to operate with 100% virtual learning models to help combat the spread of COVID-19. For more information on

Stephen Glaus, who began offering individual 12-week training sessions in the MS Fitness Challenge at the Lititz recCenter in January, is living proof that the program, which utilizes focused exercise and nutrition, can have positive results. In 2018, Stephen experienced significant mobility impairment and blurred and double vision from multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disease that causes nerve damage and interferes with communication from the brain to the body. In the fall of 2020, he completed a virtual Ironman swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles from Reading to Marietta, and running 26.2 miles. Stephen’s journey with MS began in July 2018. At the age of 27, the Elizabethtown native was working in his dream job as a drone salesman in California. “On a business trip to Japan, my left foot went completely numb,” he recalled. Three weeks later, Stephen had lost the ability to walk unaided, and he was dealing with other complications. monthly Commodity Supplemental Food Program for low-income seniors. Arthur said that the food bank and its programs were able to thrive with additional assistance. “ We have had extra help from the big federal programs that came down, like the CARES Act, and there was extra funding and food that came from the USDA and our state Department of Agriculture,” he noted. From the start of the pandemic, the food bank began to prepare for a long-term crisis. “Back in March, we knew it would be big, and we started sending out (donation) letters and we received immediate response,” Arthur stated. “Our appeals for extra help have (resulted in) a lot of generosity. It has been inspiring - the response we have received from people, foundations and businesses that are doing OK.” The community is invited to continue to help the food bank through donations or by volunteering to help sort and pack food. Since in-person food drives are currently suspended, people may take part in a virtual food drive by visiting www.centralpafood bank.org/ways-to-give/give -funds/virtual-food-drive. Arthur said that area residents should also support their local food banks in the next few months, when the need is especially strong. “We call it the ‘heat or eat’ season - when people decide whether to buy food or pay their heating bill,” he added. For more information about the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and volunteer opportunities, readers may call 717-564-1700 or visit www.centralpafoodbank.org or www.facebook.com /CentralPAFoodBank.

Christmas Tree Contest Winners Posted The third annual Christmas Tree Lane presented by BCF Group has come to an end and the winners have been announced. This event, coordinated by the Lancaster Barnstormers with the help of businesses and hosts across Lancaster County, raised over $24,000 to give back to area nonprofit organizations. Christmas Tree Lane celebrates the holiday season with businesses sponsoring and decorating themed Christmas trees to raise money for local nonprofit organizations. This holiday season, in partnership with Fig Magazine, the Lancaster Office of Promotion, Discover Lancaster, and the Lancaster City Alliance, decorated trees were placed in businesses throughout Lancaster County in an effort to draw traffic into small businesses and inspire shopping local. Members of the Lancaster community were invited to vote for their favorite trees by making a donation. All

proceeds will benefit the nonprofit organizations the trees represented. The three trees with the most votes earned additional donations for their nonprofit organizations. They are Ooh La Lashes/East Donegal Constable/EDC Medical Services benefiting Walking Forward Together in first place with 2,638 votes; TMobile benefiting A Tail to Tell in second place with 2,295 votes; and Medan Initiative benefiting Medan Initiative in third place with 1,656 votes. The tree benefiting Walking Forward Together was hosted at Zoetropolis & Lancaster Distilleries, and Walking Forward Together will receive an additional $1,000 donation. The tree benefiting A Tail to Tell was hosted at T-Mobile in Park City Center, and A Tail to Tell will receive an additional $750 donation. The tree benefiting Medan Initiative was hosted at New Holland Coffee Company and will receive an additional

$500 donation. A judging panel also determined its favorite trees by decoration and creativity. This year’s Christmas Tree Lane judges were Annie Weeks, director of LOOP; Marshall Snively, president of Lancaster City Alliance; and Rick W hite, president of the Atlantic League. The judges’ top three favorite decorated trees are Blake Collins Group benefiting YWCA Lancaster hosted at Our Town Brewery and receiving an additional $1,000 donation, first place; Ream Jewelers benefiting American Cancer Society, which will receive an additional $750 donation, second place; and Lancaster Behavioral Health Hospital hosting a tree benefiting NAMI, which will receive an additional $500 donation, third place.
