Cindi Selph set out to learn how to crochet after having a conversation with a friend about people who crochet plastic bags into sleeping mats. “I went online and got inspired by all of the YouTube videos,” recalled Selph. With sewing and knitting skills already under her belt, Selph was able to quickly teach herself how to crochet the plastic bag yarn more commonly referred to simply as “plarn.” Selph reached out to Mount Joy Helping Services to see if there might be a need for the 4-by-6-foot plarn sleeping mats locally, and she learned about the growing number of people in the immediate area experiencing homelessness. She invited people from her church, St. Mark’s United Methodist Church (UMC) in Mount Joy, to join her in creating the mats to then be

Who wants birthday cake when you could celebrate with green eggs and ham instead? That line of thought might not carry over throughout the rest of the year, but when the birthday of legendary children’s book author Dr. Seuss rolls around on March 2, libraries across the country take it upon themselves to celebrate with green eggs and ham breakfasts in his honor. The Milanof-Schock Library has been hosting an annual green eggs and ham breakfast for more than 25 years, said children’s librarian Jan Betty - best known to local See Green Eggs And Ham pg 3

Thus far, the St. Mark’s Mats of Love group has completed approximately 50 mats that have been given away and well-received. The technique for making the mats begins with flattening basic plastic bags - the two-handled ones used at grocery and convenience stores - and then measuring and cutting them into pieces that are rolled into balls of plarn. Next comes the process of crocheting the mats, each of which Selph said usually takes two weeks for her to complete, but it can take more or less time depending how much time per day someone has to devote to the project. “I usually spend a couple of hours each evening working on it,” shared Selph. Someone has chosen the fabric and crafted each one with their hands. They understand this is a gift of love.” For The Great Winter WarmUp, participants worked together to combine handmade comforter tops, warm batting, and sturdy backing fabric into durable comforters. The squares of fabric that make up the comforter tops had already been sewn together prior to the knotting sessions. At Erisman Mennonite Church, more than 80 volunteers worked together to complete a total of 111 comforters on Jan. 16 and 20. The original pieces choreographed by Kline and Faller will be performed by more than 20 dancers, including 12 apprentices. Dances for the family-friendly show have been kept intentionally short so that the performance moves quickly. As with “Bring Into Being,” “Veer” will be performed in the style of contemporary dance, which includes techniques pulled from modern dance, but the program will depart from the themes of “Bring Into Being.” “This year, we are incorporating some different themes,” Kline pointed out. “There will be similarities, but we both tried to branch out.” Faller agreed. “I think with the title ‘Veer,’ we both felt (the work) was jar-
ring,” she said, adding that the movement and music will be edgier compared to the calmer “Bring Into Being.” “This time we are trying to pack a punch with our movement and everything we are showing,” noted Faller. “Some movement is more animalistic,” said Kline, who pointed out that a piece called “Birds of Paradise” was influenced by tropical birds. “Some (numbers) are influenced by real-life events - even tragedies - and real-life relationships,” she explained. As with the debut of the company in 2019, Kline and Faller noted that dances will be quick moving and engaging, and the choreography will be colorful and upbeat. For “Veer,” the costuming will be brighter as well. “This year, we branched

This year, the pair has created “Veer” with a goal of distinguishing their dance company from other established organizations. “We want to be known for our thing, which is contemporary-style movement,” explained Faller. “We are veering off into our own direction.” “Veer,” which will include 10 dance pieces and last about an hour, will be presented on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 7:30 p.m. at

Both took lessons at a local dance studio and, following graduation, majored in dance at DeSales University in Center Valley. At DeSales, Kline focused on choreography, while Faller was more interested in performance. The pair launched Emme Dance Collective in Lancaster at the end of June 2018. Emme Dance Collective is sponsored fiscally through Fractured Atlas in New York. In the past, Kline and Faller have used their talents to give back to the community by contributing to other local organizations, an effort they plan to repeat. At the end of the event, Janet delivered the comforters to the MCC Material Resource Center in Ephrata. From there, the comforters will be distributed to people in need throughout the world as a tangible sign of compassion in whatever crisis they may be facing. For instance, comforters have been delivered to people in Syria, Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon in recent years in the wake of war in Syria and other violence in the region. Indians Battle Top Teams in Section Four by Vaughn Brown
2-19), to its credit, did face two of the top three teams in Section Four last week when they hosted both Octorara (7-6, 13-8) and Lancaster Catholic (11-1, 18-2), losing both games by respective scores of 61-41 and 71-56.
Trailing 13-8 against Octorara last Tuesday, the Indians failed to find Last week proved to be another any traction in the second quarter as unsolved piece of the puzzle that is the Braves outscored them 17-11 for Donegal’s season as the boys’ basketa 30-19 halftime lead. Despite Gavin ball team unsuccessfully hunted its Hawk putting up the second highest first league win. Donegal (0-12, total of the game at 11 points, Octorara went on a 17-8 run in the third before Donegal righted the ship, somewhat, by equaling their output in the fourth with 14. Patrick Summers (7), Ryan Zuch (7), Luke Yunginger (7), and Peter Steinkamp (3) all hit once from long range as well in the loss. Facing the section leading Crusaders on Friday, three Indians hit double digits led by Zuch who put up a game high 20 points with three from beyond the arc while hitting five-of-eight free throws. Summers added 12 and one three pointer while Hawk tallied 11 and was three-of-five from the line. Donegal only trailed by four heading into the second quarter, but was not able to plug the leaks as Lancaster Catholic slowly pulled away for a 33-24 lead at halftime which they extended in the third for a 53-34 advantage. Gathering themselves somewhat in the fourth, the Indians were able to find some offensive success, although a little too late as they went on a 22-18 run to end the game. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Putting together back-to-back wins for the first time since they put away ELCO and Octorara three weeks prior, the lady Indians followed up a decisive win over McCaskey on January 25 with another dominant performance in an 81-45 victory last Tuesday, again, versus Octorara. adjustment with our defense and pick up our intensity. Our defense began to turn into our offense and things just started to click for us,” commented coach Thomas Baughman. “Kiera was able to get to the rim and open things up while Victoria became aggressive on the boards and we began our 49-18 second half.” Nearly doubling Octorara’s output in the third quarter, the ladies went on a 23-12 run in an offensive push that was too much for the Braves to handle as Donegal steamrolled its way through to the end of the game. Fueled by Kiera Baughman’s game high 33 points, and strong rebounding from Victoria Burton, the Indians outscored the Braves 26-6 over the course of the fourth quarter. “This was the type of half we needed for momentum going into Friday night’s game against Lancaster Catholic,” added Baughman. And that momentum definitely carried over for the lady Indians who, despite a 73-51 loss, gave the Crusaders all they could handle. “The focus of the team right from the tip off was unlike any other game this year,” explained Baughman. “It was another face guard, double and triple team kind of night for Kiera but her will to compete and lead her team has been unrivaled this season. She was able to push the pace of the game and force Catholic to play from behind, which is something they are not used to doing.” Donegal’s inspired play did indeed put the Section four champs back on their heels as the visitor’s gritty play led them to an early, 14-10 advantage after one quarter of play. Leading by 11 points partway through the second, Donegal was forced to make some adjustments when Burton got into foul trouble after picking up her third of the game and Catholic was able to take advantage, slashing the
Indian lead to 30-28 at halftime. “We opened the second half up by two and still battling hard but as time went on it wasn’t enough to match Catholics bench and we began to run out of gas,” said Baughman who also had praise for one of his younger play-
ers on the roster. “Rylee Smith really stepped up big tonight, handled the ball really well through pressure of the Catholic Defense allowing Kiera to run free and get open. Rylee has shown some real growth and determination this season and it really showed

The beauty of the project is that people of all ages can help, Selph said, whether they have crocheting skills or not. Some members of St. Mark’s UMC assist by donating bags, and the church has a box designated for plastic bag donations. Others cut strips of plastic and roll plarn balls at home in their leisure time. “Some people find it very therapeutic,” commented Selph. Mats of Love participant Mary Rost agreed, chiming in, “It’s truly cheap therapy.” “There are a lot of people that just donate the bags, which is great because we’re happy to have them,” said Rost. Colorful bags are especially appreciated as Rost explained that it adds dimension

and interest to the overall design and look of the mat. The concept of making and giving away the plarn mats is not new or unique to the Mats of Love group at St. Mark’s UMC, emphasized Selph. “There are lots of people doing it, even here in Lancaster,” she shared. In addition to giving mats to Mount Joy Helping Services, Mats of Love participant Deb Rupp delivers mats to Lancaster First Assembly of God, where the mats are given out as needed to homeless people who attend a free monthly meal hosted by that congregation. Even the excess of the plastic bags used in the process - the handles and very bottom portion of each bag - are put to good use, as they are donated to the Mount Joy Lions Club to later be used in making recycled benches.
