Allen has starred in two “Apostles of Comedy” films; syndicated comedy series “Bananas”; his own one-hour comedy special, “Happy Wife, Happy Life”; and the Warner Bros. comedy film “Thou Shalt Laugh.” On social media, Allen’s “Dry Bar Comedy” videos have garnered more than 100 million views. “He will do the comedy piece as well as sharing some of his own personal story of the negative impact of his own life choices and transformation through Christ that came after that,” Hughes said. This will be the third year for REYS hosting a comedy act at its banquet. Hughes said the organizers received positive feedback following the performances by Jay and Laura Laffoon in 2019 and Gordon Douglas in 2018. “We want it to be a fun night out for people,” emphasized Hughes. People interested in supporting the fundraising needs of REYS are encouraged to sponsor a table at the banquet. Table sponsorships are available for a set fee and include tickets for eight guests and priority seating. A for-profit and not-forprofit collaboration has been formed in an effort to ensure that the community work being done at Columbia Creative Factory (CCF), 247 Locust St., Columbia, will be able to continue. An offshoot of the Lancaster Creative Factory, the CCF has been offering low-cost and free art classes and programming for children, youths, and adults since 2016. The building that housed the organization for four years on a donated basis was listed for sale in January 2019, explained CCF volunteer Andrea Campbell. At that time, Campbell and others at CCF organized a capital campaign with hopes of purchasing the building. Approximately $185,000 has been raised of the $425,000 needed to buy the building and make necessary upgrades, including ADA accessibility. The final deadline for the campaign is Saturday, Feb. 29. Individuals interested in making a tax-deductible donation to support the Columbia Creative Factory may visit www.columbia creativefactory.org. One supporter has offered to match the next $25,000 raised so that contributions will be doubled. If CCF purchases the building,
The Pottery Works, a paint-yourown-pottery studio located at 16 W. Orange St., Lancaster, plans to launch a new location at the site of the current CCF in the spring. “We see so much potential in Columbia as we did in (downtown) Lancaster in the early 2000s: great people, great history and architecture, and great budding arts community, shared Marcie Natale, owner of The Pottery Works. Campbell explained that with The Pottery Works as an anchor tenant in the building, the nonprofit-owned space will remain on the Columbia Borough tax rolls. Plus, the addition of The Pottery Works to the facility will guarantee the building is open to the public seven days a week. “The concentration of artists in this space, in a secure position to remain here for years to come, could be a huge economic driver, noted Campbell. The CCF building was once home to Heineman’s Department Store. “People walk in and they love the space. They love remembering what happened here when they were kids and shopping here, Campbell shared. “You’ve got the older generation coming in and having those memories that were here, and by reopening this iconic building on the main street to the public for
creative processes, what we expect is that once we own the building it will be a secure space so that 20 years from now they can come back in with their kids and they’ll have those memories just like the grandparents have the memories of Heineman’s. One CCF project that Campbell said received positive community feedback was a bike rack contest. Columbia Borough School District students submitted designs that were then displayed at CCF for the community to vote on. A mayfly design was selected as the winner to be constructed into a functional bike rack that is now located at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. Some current supporters of CCF include the Columbia Foresters Club, Columbia Lions Club, Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074, the Hinkle family, Kleen-Rite, Roger Sandt, Steinman Foundation, and Turkey Hill Dairy. Tours of CCF are available upon request. Anyone with questions may contact Campbell at 717-615-6615 or andrea@ naturallightfilms.com. Mon., Tues., Wed., Thurs. 7:30-6:00; Fri. 7:30-9:00; Sat. 7:30-5:30 Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Columbia, represented by members Jim Knapp (left) and Carol Shive, invite the community to place orders for plain and glazed fastnachts. Pickups will take place on 11 days from Feb. 24 to March 25. with the last bake on Wednesday, March 25. Doors will open at 10 a.m. for pickup each day. Any not picked up by 1 p.m. will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. “A lot of people freeze them to have all year,” remarked Carol Shive, who is in charge of the packaging and selling and has been volunteering with the bake for 20 years. Holy Trinity’s motto for its fastnachts is “A little bite of heaven,” revealing a hint of the love and pride that goes into the fried pastries. The labor-intensive process begins with volunteers who arrive at 4 a.m. each bake day to start hand-rolling, shaping and cutting the dough that has been prepared by the night crew, which carefully measures, weighs and mixes the ingredients. Additional volunteers arrive at 5:30 a.m. to operate the fryers, and others
handle the sorting, counting and packing in preparation for pickup by the public. Approximately 150 volunteers partake in the process. Last year, the crew made an astounding 6,775 dozen fastnachts - or 81,300 total. While many of the volunteers are members of the parish, still more people join in from throughout York and Lancaster counties representing a variety of churches. New volunteers are always welcome and needed. Anyone interested in helping may call Knapp at 717-475-3793. One more thing Knapp wants people placing orders to know: Regardless of the weather, the volunteers will be at Holy Trinity to make sure the fastnachts orders are fulfilled. “Rain or snow, it has to go on,” stated Knapp. “Period.”

Volunteers at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry St., Columbia, will be hard at work in the kitchen in the coming weeks as the church’s 96th annual Fastnacht Bake commences. Fastnachts were traditionally made on Shrove Tuesday as a way to use up all of the fats in the kitchen before Lent, which runs from Ash Wednesday to Easter. At Holy Trinity, the Fastnacht Bake started with a group of ladies from the parish that decided to make and sell fastnachts as a fundraiser for the construction of the church building. Jim Knapp, who runs the fryer room, emphasized that the Holy Trinity fastnachts are made with yeast and a “very little bit” of lard and are fried to golden brown perfection in vegetable oil. “A true fastnacht cannot be a cake doughnut,” noted Knapp. Plain and glazed options are available, but according to Knapp the glazed fastnachts are the bestsellers year after year. “The glaze is a top-secret recipe,” he added. All fastnachts must be preordered at www.holytrinity columbiapa.com. The website opened for online orders on Jan. 19 and will remain open until sold out. Plain or glazed fastnachts may be ordered by the dozen and picked up at the church on any of the bake days. Fastnachts will be baked on Monday, Feb. 24; Tuesday, Feb. 25; and Wednesday, Feb. 26. After that, fastnachts will be baked on Mondays and Wednesdays during the four weeks of Lent,

Columbia Public Library To Host Decluttering Workshop By Chelsea Peifer
Kala Denlinger has always been a tidy person by nature, but it was not until a few years ago when more and more friends started asking for her help with home organization projects that she considered turning her penchant for organizing into a business. In 2019, Denlinger launched Simply D-Cluttered, offering her skills as a decluttering coach to anyone who may benefit from help as they attempt to get the spaces in their home or business in order. “People know how to tidy up, but it’s overwhelming to start and that’s often where I come in,” shared Denlinger, who resides in Mount Joy. “It’s sort of like with physical fitness: It’s not necessarily about not knowing how to do it. We all just need guidance sometimes in certain areas of our lives.” On Thursday, Feb. 20, the community is invited to join Denlinger for “Simply Declutter,” a fun night of organizational motivation and tips, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Columbia Public Library, 24 S. Sixth St., Columbia. The workshop is free, and no registration is necessary. Denlinger will share some of the road blocks that prevent
people from decluttering their homes and spaces. She will also discuss solutions and practical tips for moving past those obstacles. Finding or prioritizing the time to declutter is a common issue for people, along with dealing with emotional attachments to items. “I have people start by focusing on one room at a time and taking a room-byroom approach,” said Denlinger. “You can’t transform it all overnight.” She explained that taking small steps tends to yield greater success versus attempting to tackle everything in one fell swoop. But what about the person who may not see the need to declutter or the value in getting rid of excess? “Less stuff, less stress,” emphasized Denlinger. “When you have a lot around you, it means you have a lot to do, whether that’s dusting or maintenance or whatever it may be … and once it’s gone, it’s a huge relief off your back.” “Life is stressful enough; we don’t need anything extra weighing us down,” added Denlinger. To learn more about Simply D-Cluttered, interested individuals may contact Denlinger at 717333-9858 or kala@simply dcluttered.com. For details on additional programs coming up at the Columbia Public Library, readers may visit https://columbia publiclibrary.org.

The Center for Traffic Safety, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, Safe Kids Lancaster County, and the Manheim Township Police Department will distribute car seats to Lancaster County police departments. Funded by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, 39 car seats were slated to be provided to 21 municipal police departments by the end of January. Law enforcement agencies often have child passengers during calls, and they need to have resources available to safely transport children. Every child must be properly restrained when riding in a motor vehicle. In order to uphold this Pennsylvania law, police officers need to have the means to transport children safely before leaving a scene. According to Safe Kids, a correctly installed child restraint can greatly reduce the risk of injury or death in an automobile accident. Safe Kids Lancaster County offers car seat checks at locations through Lancaster County. To learn more, readers may contact Natalie Oster, Lancaster County coalition coordinator, at 717544-3807 or natalie.oster@ pennmedicine.upenn.edu.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced that its two Columbia Branches (Spanish) are now recognized as independent congregations of the Church. Located in York and Lancaster counties, these groups were divided into two independent Spanish-speaking branches and organized with new leaders on Oct. 29, 2019. The Spanish-speaking branches have grown enough to be recognized as independent congregations. Previously, the branches shared one branch president and two counselors. Now each has a branch president and two counselors. The former Columbia Branch (West) of York County, 2100 Hollywood Drive, was renamed the Queen Street Branch (Spanish). President Ángel Díaz was sustained as branch president, replacing president Matthew Gogna. Diaz’s counselors are first counselor José Jiménez and second counselor Ricardo Ureña. Applications will be accepted from students continuing their education in the 202021 school year with the intent of majoring in a curriculum that focuses on natural resources and/or conservation. Examples of acceptable programs of study include environmental sciences, wildlife and/or fisheries biology, environmental resource management, or other related programs. Acceptable programs should lead to an advanced degree (two-year associate degree or four-year baccalaureate degree). The completed application must be received in the LCCD office by Tuesday, March 31.
The scholarship committee of LCCD will conduct a review of the applicants. The basis for selection will be determined on past performance and activities, current school and community involvement, future purpose and direction, and communication skills. The scholarship committee, prior to the final selection, will interview the top candidates. An announcement of the successful candidates will be made by Friday, May 15. The scholarships are made possible through an initial Ann Brown bequest, an annual fundraiser at the district banquet, and contributions from individuals. For more information and to obtain a scholarship application, readers may visit www.lancaster conservation.org or call the office at 717-874-2559.
The Queen Street Branch presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints consists of (from left) branch clerk Vladimir Miranda, first counselor José Jiménez, branch president Ángel Díaz, and second counselor Ricardo Ureña.

prince invites everyone to the ball and that overtakes (the activist’s) stump speech. Something superficial overtakes what everyone should be caring about.” The production also utilizes physical movement and music to tell parts of the story. “We have some fabulous dancers, and we are using their dance ability to create the magic of the transformations,” said DePaul. “There will be dancers in costumes that suggest animal characters who through their dancing become footmen,” she explained. As a Rodgers and Hammerstein show, “Cinderella” delivers a variety of music, much of which audience members will recognize. Ella will sing “In My Own Little Corner.” Other familiar numbers will include “The Prince Is Giving a Ball” and “Impossible/It’s Possible,” sung by the fairy godmother. Hannah and Alex will also sing “Ten Minutes Ago” about the joys of spontaneous love. Newer songs will include “Me, Who Am I?” and “Now Is the Time,” which will be sung by Joe. DePaul hopes individuals who see the show will relate to the transformations they see in the characters on stage. “I really want the audience (members) to find themselves in Cinderella’s shoes and know they’re worthy,” said DePaul. “(Ella) struggles with her self-worth, (but) her fairy godmother is there to let her know she is beautiful and capable and smart. She ends up helping to bring change to her kingdom. We all have the potential to be beyond ourselves.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.Cavod Academy.com or by calling 717-354-3355 on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets may be available at the door for a higher price.

Monica DePaul, director of the upcoming musical production of “Cinderella” at Cavod Theatre, admits she has not always been a fan of fairy tales in recent years. “They were fun when I was 8, but now I want to watch a girl who has dreams beyond the prince,” mused DePaul. Fortunately, the 2013
Broadway revival production of “Cinderella” gave DePaul a heroine with depth. “We still have a prince and a love story, but there’s self-discovery for Cinderella in this version and friendship and forgiveness,” said DePaul. “Even with a modern retelling, it doesn’t lose that old-fashioned charm.” “Cinderella” will play at the Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Feb. 28 and March 6; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Feb. 29 and March 7; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, March 1 and 8. “Cinderella” is based on the age-old tale of the same name. This version focuses on the main character, calling her Ella, played by Hannah Rau, but adds revolutionary JeanMichael, played by Joe Kelly, and a woman known as Marie, played by Kylie Nabers, who will transform on stage into the fairy godmother. Meanwhile, the prince, played by Alexander Weaver and known as Topher (short for Christopher), worries that slaying dragons is not important enough work for a future king. According to DePaul, the cast of about 20 is also taking to the unique takes included in the revised show. “There’s humor,” stated DePaul. “When people think of Cinderella, they don’t think of the comedy, but this version is very funny. (The cast is) embracing it, and I am loving what they’re doing.” DePaul noted that the comedy should appeal to both adults and children. “There is satire,” she said, noting that the show plays with stereotypical characters in fun ways. “(JeanMichael) is a political activist, and he wants to call the people to focus on what’s important, (such as) land or food, but the
