Library will host “Celebrate Seuss” BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Family Pack encourages camaraderie BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For more than four decades, Boy Scout Pack 263 had been providing opportunities for fun and leadership to youths in Mount Joy when the pandemic paused the pack. By the time activities started resuming in
the community, the pack had dissolved. Determined to see the organization come back, Bob Adams took action. Adams, who has been in Boy Scouts for more than 45 years, understood the value of Scouting. “I figured we had to get See Pack pg 5

Two months ago, Larry A. Derr of Mount Joy was installed as the 125th Right Worshipful Grand Master of the Masons of Pennsylvania. The role is an honor, he said, and offers him an opportunity to promote an organization that’s had a major influence on his life. “B e ing the 125th Grand Master means you are a part of a very long tradition of service, one I am extremely honored to continue,” he said. “I have been a member for more than 50 years, so Freemasonry has

been a significant part of my life and significantly shaped the man I am today. This is a way for me to give back for the lifelong learning, friendships and experiences this journey has afforded me.” In this role, Derr is responsible for leading the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, which oversees 388 lodges and approximately 87,000 members across the commonwealth, as well as the Masonic Charities, which include the Masonic Villages, the Masonic Children’s Home, the Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation, the Masonic Blood + See Light pg 6

“T
his is a fun and inexpensive way to have an awesome family night together,” said director of children and youth Jan Betty, describing the Milanof-Schock Library’s “Celebrate Seuss: A Library Adventure.” “We are a community space, and this is a great way to bring folks in from the community to relax and enjoy.” The Dr. Seuss event will be held on Friday, March 1, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the library, 1184 Anderson Ferr y Road, Mount Joy. Tickets must be purchased in advance in person at the library, and families will sign up for a time slot in order to stagger attendance and cut down on crowds. Betty, affectionately known as “Miss Jan,” said families can expect to interact with Seuss characters and pick up some fun prizes. “The adventure begins in the program room, where you pack your bag and prepare for your ‘trip.’ Our friends leave the room and travel from station to station throughout the library, where they will participate in activities in each of the seven stations,” she explained. “There are small prizes at most stations, and many of those stations include a Dr. Seuss character like Fox in Socks, Horton the elephant, the Grinch and Gertrude McFuzz.” Thing 1 and Thing 2 will be helping out, and people may take pictures with the Cat in the Hat. Each child will also receive a ticket to put in one of the prize baskets at the end of the trip. Putting together an event like The Cat in the Hat will be one of the characters featured at “Celebrate

this requires a team, Betty said, noting that the Seuss characters will be sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems and students affiliated with the organization will serve as volunteers. “Both Key Club and Builders Club will be participating in the event again this year,” she shared. “Most of the library staff and several library volunteers will also participate. It takes at least 24 people to run this event comfortably, and I am always encouraged by the number of volunteers who come out to help.” The Seuss event is popular, Betty emphasized, and space is limited. “Get your tickets early, because we always sell out,” she said. something going,” he said. “Scouts is an opportunity for kids to grow and learn. It’s a chance for them to develop leadership skills and learn to be productive citizens.” Adams formed Family Cub Scout Pack 39 in September of 2023. Open to boys and girls in kindergarten through grade five, the pack meets on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at Mary Mother of the Church, 625 Union School Road, Mount Joy. Adams explained that “family packs” are just that - for families. It’s a chance for families to have fun together and bond over Scouting activities such as the pack’s recent Pinewood Derby. The derby was held at The Gathering Place in Mount Joy and featured the Scouts racing miniature cars down a track built and donated by the Knights of Columbus. The Rotary Club of Mount Joy sponsors both the pack and Scouts BSA Troop 39. “The community has been very supportive of us, and we really appreciate it,” Adams said. Both kids and adults enjoyed the derby, which featured trophies for the winners. “The kids were just so excited,” Adams recalled. “We had a lot of parent involvement, too. It

really brought everybody together.” Adams encourages anyone who is interested to consider joining Scouts. Not only has he been a Boy Scout for decades, but both of his sons are Eagle Scouts. “Scouts provides lots of opportunities for camaraderie and fun and friendship,” he said. It also creates lifelong bonds. “It’s amazing to watch these kids grow from kindergarten through high school, and then they go off to college, and you run into them in the community and find out they are a doctor now or they are contributing to society in some other ways,” Adams shared. “It’s so nice to be involved in somebody’s life that way. It’s wonderful to see the kids grow and develop.”
