“Anything Goes,” the 1934 Cole Porter musical extravaganza, has it all: high-energy dancing, toe-tapping jazz tunes, gut-busting comedy, and plenty of surprises. Student performers at Donegal High School (DHS) have put in a tremendous amount of work to stage the comedic and dance-heavy show, which will take the stage at the high school, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. The traditional senior citizen dress rehearsal performance will take place at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 7. Individuals age 65 and older are invited to attend free of charge, and light refreshments will be served in the cafeteria during intermission. Regular showtimes will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 10. Tickets will be for sale at the box office on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. in the DHS lobby.
Tickets will also be available for purchase one hour prior to performances on March 8, 9, and 10. According to vocal director Hollie Mendenhall, dancing will be a part of nearly every scene. “A few students are going to be tap dancing for the very first time (on stage),” Mendenhall shared. Janus Ambassadors Club Learns About Local Area By Diane Bitting
Laura and Jay Laffoon, known for their insightful, personal, and humorous family and marriage ministry, will be the keynote speakers at Rainbow’s End Youth Services’ annual fundraising banquet at WJTL’s Junction Center on Friday, March 29.
The sunny dining room at the Juniper Village assisted living facility in Mount Joy got a bit brighter on a recent Monday afternoon as artwork created by students at The Janus School was hung on the walls. Art teacher Beth Shook directed eight students from the Mount Joy school’s newly formed Janus Ambassadors club in hanging several framed pieces and arranging colorful papier-mache letters - spelling out “READ TODAY” - on two wall shelves. Two of the art pieces were created by club members. See Janus Ambassadors pg 6
Members of the new Janus Ambassadors club from The Janus School in Mount Joy recently visited Juniper Village in Mount Joy. Among those visiting were (front, from left) Emma Purvis, teacher and club co-adviser Christine Koslosky, Lilly Witmer, art teacher Beth Shook, teacher and co-adviser Patrick Pressley, (back) Madison Kauffman, Zoe Soderblom, Owen Richards, Anna Hession and Colleen Klahr.

When Emily Kline and Melissa Faller, the founders of Emme Dance Collective, work together to create a dance concert, they consider who might be in the audience. “When we create a show, we think of the dad in the audience who may not understand it,” said Kline. “We want them to leave entertained,” she added. “If they were entertained, we feel we have accomplished something.” With that goal in mind, Kline and Faller plan to present “Bring Into Being,” the debut dance concert that will showcase the style and aesthetic associated with their contemporary company. The pieces in the show, which will be presented on Saturday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m. at the Leffler Chapel and Performance Center at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown, will all be choreographed by Kline and Faller. The pieces will be performed by 10 company dancers, two apprentices, and a few students of Kline and Faller. According to Faller, “Bring Into Being” is designed to introduce Emme Dance Collective to the community. Kline noted, “We thought we’d create a show that (demonstrates to the audience) who we are … as artists and as choreographers.” The show will include a mixture of new pieces
and those created in the recent past. Kline pointed out that the nine pieces that will be included in the show will be performed in the style of contemporary dance, which includes techniques that pull from modern dance. “I would describe it as moving in the moment,” she said, adding that the music will be current and contemporary and even include lyrics. Faller Melissa Faller (left in left photo) and Emily Kline (right in left photo), added, “We try not to use music founders of the Emme Dance Collective, will present “Bring Into that is mainstream or recognizable because we’re trying to Being,” the company’s first dance concert, which will feature a dozen create something new, fresh, dancers, including Devon Groff (right photo), at the Leffler Chapel and Performance Center at Elizabethtown College on March 2. and different.” Kline noted that dances for the family-friendly show have been kept University in Center Valley. “In (college), we nity,” she said. “We aren’t just a perforintentionally short so that the performance concentrated on different areas,” explained mance group. In addition to the romantic drama, an incognito gangster, Moonface Martin, played by senior Ethan Salem, and a wealthy stockbroker, Elisha Whitney, played by Kevin Padilla, bring a heaping helping of comedy and intrigue to the plot. Additional lead cast members include Aubree Jones and Charis Alkinburgh. Although the show was written in the midst of economic depression and the end of the Prohibition era, the comedy translates well to the current day. “Some of it might seem oldfashioned, but it has a new vibe,” Rachel commented. “We are doing the original (1934) version with some of the feel from the 2011 Broadway revival.” Show-stopper musical num-

bers include “Blow, Gabriel, Blow” and the title song, “Anything Goes,” which cast members describe as the big tap number at the end of act one. “There is so much more dancing (than any other DHS musical),” Ethan shared. “We have had more rehearsal time because it is a heavy-dance and heavy-ensemble show.” The stage crew also worked overtime to create the impressive set, which includes a large section that reaches out into the audience and creates the visual of the boat. The crew constructed the set bit by bit each evening after rehearsal, completing the look by the third week. The cast and crew are enthusiastic about “Anything Goes” and hope audiences will enjoy the energetic production and hard work that students have put into the show. Attendees can also expect a surprise ending, though the cast was tightlipped about specifics. For additional information, readers may call the school at 717-653-1871.
Rehearsing for “Anything Goes,” to be performed at Donegal High School in March, are (from left) Kevin Padilla, Joey Piatt, Rachel Snyder, and Charis Alkinburgh.
Donegal High School students (from left) Clark Mummau, Aubree Jones, Ethan Salem, and Mackenzie Shirk will present the dance-heavy comedy “Anything Goes” in March.

The unofficial kickoff of the local yard sale season will take place on Saturday, March 2, when Ruhl’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, will host an indoor yard sale. Shoppers are invited to search for bargains at the 20th annual event, which will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. in the church’s fellowship hall. “Spring starts soon after (our event), so we are the first ones in the yard sale circuit because we have it inside,” said Kris Gray, one of the event organizers, noting that a variety of goods will be available for sale. “People bring all kinds of stuff from clothing, books, puzzles and games to collectibles - you name it.” Gray noted that more than 40 standholders will participate in the yard sale. “Most are church members, but we also have friends in the community that come
every year,” she said. Additionally, a food stand will be open, offering items such as soup made by church members, homemade baked goods, hot dogs and sauerkraut, fried egg sandwiches, coffee and other beverages. Proceeds from standholder donations and the food stand will help fund the activities of the Sunshine Sunday school class at Ruhl’s UMC. “We have four adult Sunday school classes, and that is one of them,” Gray explained. “We use (the proceeds) for our ministries and mission work. We support a Compassion (International) child and local missions in our church and local projects.” The Sunshine Sunday school class also purchases Bibles that are distributed during the church’s clothing giveaway, God’s Clothing Closet, held annually in August. “We have a senior citizens banquet that

The entire task took little more than half an hour. But it was another opportunity for these students to leave their campus, located on Lefever Road, and experience a different aspect of the Mount Joy community and, if needed, lend a helping hand. The idea behind the club, formed in January, is to help students develop communication and leadership skills while becoming better acquainted with the town where their private day school is located. “Our school is an independent school, sitting in the middle of the community, (but) we’re not hooked into the community in the same way a public school is,” stated club co-adviser Christine Koslosky, who teaches Spanish and language arts at Janus. “The big idea is to have them being able to get out and interact with adults in the community and practice social skills,” said co-adviser Patrick Pressley, who
teaches history and language arts. The school, with a current enrollment of 63 pupils in grades one through 12, draws students from several surrounding counties. In fact, of the club’s eight student members - seven high-schoolers and one fifth-grader - only ninth-grader Zoe Soderblom is from Mount Joy. The others hail from Wrightsville, Hershey, Palmyra, Wyomissing, Lancaster and Shrewsbury. One of the club’s outings was to the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce, where the students learned about the western Lancaster County town. The school, which is a member of the Chamber, also ran a notice in the Chamber newsletter, describing the club and seeking hosts. The club meets after school on Mondays and will be active into March, with plans to continue next school year. In addition to the Chamber and Juniper Village, the club has visited the
Milanof-Schock Library, where the students learned about using online databases and went on a treasure hunt. The students also were slated to return to Juniper Village for a sing-along with residents. Another excursion will be a visit to the Olde Square Inn, where they will get a lesson in etiquette. “I didn’t really know a whole lot about Mount Joy,” said Madison Kauffman, a ninth-grader from Wyomissing. “It’s really helped show me a lot of the places in the community of Mount Joy.” “We believe firmly in our school that we need to get the kids out,” said Koslosky, who used to run a global studies program that saw students travel to Spain, Costa Rica and Italy. “If we can’t get them to Costa Rica, we should at least try to get them out in Mount Joy.” Koslosky noted that the club is valuable in that the students “understand that they have a connection to the community
that goes beyond the doors of our school.” So far, the club has gotten good reviews from the students. “We’ve all learned ... to work together and to try to help the community as much as we can,” said Emma Purvis, a 10th-grader from Wrightsville. “It’s such an amazing time to make people so happy whenever we’re around them. And we just make their day and it makes me happy,” stated Colleen Klahr, a 10th-grader from Wyomissing. It is especially gratifying for Zoe, who moved to Mount Joy a couple years ago. “I love it. It’s awesome,” she said. “I love going out into the community and helping people and getting to know other places, like Juniper.” Any Mount Joy businesses or organizations interested in hosting the Janus Ambassadors in the future should contact Koslosky at 717-653-0025, ext. 126, or ckoslosky@thejanusschool.org.

The puns are practically unavoidable: Donegal Trout Unlimited (DTU) is fishing for support; DTU hopes to lure supporters to its annual banquet and auction; DTU members are hooked on cold water conservation. Puns or no puns, the work the group is doing is necessary to the health of Lancaster County’s streams and waterways, as well as larger bodies of water like the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay. “We’ve spent approximately $3.5 million in about seven years on stream restoration projects,” said Bob Kutz, co-chair of DTU’s conservation committee, board member, and fundraising committee member. “Through these projects, we’ve greatly reduced the sediment going into the Conowingo Pond.” DTU is one of 53 chapters of Trout Unlimited in the state. The chapter was started in 1967 with about a dozen members and was named for its original meeting location. Now, more than 750 people are members of DTU, and the organization holds board meetings at the Millport Conservancy in Lititz and general meetings at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster. The group first worked on restoring Donegal Springs and Donegal Creek, and its work has spread throughout the county. The restoration completed on Lititz Run has become nationally known, said fundraising committee member Vicki Wilson. Currently, DTU has projects in process on Fishing Creek in southern Lancaster County. As a result of the group’s efforts, streambanks are holding their shape, water temperatures are dropping, and aquatic life is thriving. “A buffer of 100 feet filters out all pollutants,” Kutz explained, adding that hardwood trees planted in riparian buffers even a few dozen feet wide make an impact on streambank stability. DTU maintains a nursery at the Millport Conservancy for use in future projects. “We will have thousands of trees to plant (in buffers) in the next three or four years,” Kutz said. “Even after all the flooding we had this year, the (creek banks) where we planted are still there. The others are blown out,” fundraising committee chair Ruth Roulston reported. The group is thankful to have received grants to cover the costs of its work. However, there are expenses involved in operating the
chapter. Fundraising committee co-chair Barry Witmer noted that when new members join, a portion of their membership dues stays local, while the remainder goes to the national organization. Thereafter, the entirety of a member’s dues is paid directly to Trout Unlimited. Exclusive of conservation projects, DTU’s yearly operating budget averages to $33,000. The budget includes facility rental fees, speakers’ fees, sponsorships for youths to attend conservation camps, training and supplies for the Trout in the Classroom program, tree nursery stock and planting supplies, printed materials, and costs associated with fundraising. The annual banquet and auction is DTU’s largest fundraiser. This

Donegal Matmen Qualify Three to Districts by Vaughn Brown `
Wrestling’s post-season officially got under way with the District Three 3A Sectional tournament which was held over the weekend of February 15-16 at four different locations. Donegal took part in the Section 2 portion of the action which was held at Hempfield High School with 12 Indian wrestlers taking part. In District Three, the top four wrestlers from each weight class in sectionals qualify for the District Championship which was held this past weekend in Hershey at the old Hersheypark Arena. Three Donegal wrestlers made the cut and took part with an opportunity to advance to the PIAA tournament with their results to follow in next week’s issue.
Ethan Herr, Dylan Bowers, and Will Small all finished in the top four in their respective weight classes and while none of them claimed gold, Bowers finished second at 126 pounds, Small took third at 170, and Herr landed in fourth at 106. Each earned a first round bye and didn’t take to the mat until Saturday’s action in the quarterfinals which followed Friday’s opening round and first round of consolations. Bowers opened at 126 against Clay Gainer of Hempfield whom he major decisioned 10-2 to reach the semifinal round. There he met up with Manheim Central’s Dakota Thomas who reached the semis with a 2:43 fall over Solanco’s Chase Charles after a 5-1 decision in Friday’s opening round over Mark Lavelle from Hershey.
Advancing to the championship bout by scoring a 6-0 decision over Thomas, Bowers took on Andrew Bliss from Lampeter-Strasburg who steam rolled his way to the finals with two technical falls. Despite foiling Bliss’ attempt at a clean run of three in a row, Bowers fell 12-2 to the champ while earning his silver medal. Small’s qualifying effort took a short run through Saturday’s consi’s when Milton Hershey’s Darius Briggs handed the junior Indian a 14-6 loss in the semifinals following his 5-2 decision over Penn Manor’s Cole Shenk in the quarters. Wrestling back, Small earned two major decision wins to claim bronze, first with a 15-4 win over Luke Higgins of Palmyra and then a 12-3 victory against Warwick’s David Hnasko in the third-place bout. Likewise, Herr also took a short ride through the consolation bracket before defaulting in the third minute of his third-place bout with Micah Sams from Manheim Township to place fourth overall. He began action with a fall over Elizabethtown’s Wyatt Mummau in 4:25 of their quarterfinal bout, but lost a close 4-3 decision versus Dominic Flatt of Solanco. A 7-2 victory over Hempfield’s Gio Luciano in the consi semis pushed him into the matchup with Sams. Meanwhile, six Donegal wrestlers made it to the consi quarterfinals before bowing out of the competition. Jansen Flohr at 113 pounds and Garrett Blake at 160 both received first
round byes before losing consecutive bouts, while Joe Fox (145) and Mason Ober (152) followed opening round losses with one win and a loss in the wrestle backs. Cael Rapp (182) and Joel Grillo (195) won their opening round bouts before taking losses in both the championship and consi quarters, while in other action, Taj Younger (120), Jeff Flores (132), and Jeremy Algoe (138) all suffered back-to-back losses to end their seasons as well. SWIMMING Spanning Friday, February 8th to Saturday February 9th, the Donegal swim team took part in the L-L League meet and met with very favorable results. The Indian swimmers came away with a total of ten medals including four League championships, two second place finishers and two in third. They also claimed a League meet record and two Donegal school records as well. “Over the two days we had 16 swims and 15 personal best times,” exclaimed coach Alison Kreider about the team’s accomplishments. “Districts here we come!” In Friday’s action, Jenna Park defended her crown in the 50 freestyle and won her first of two gold medals with a top time of 24.40 while Jake Houck earned gold in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 50.22. That not only won him the title but gave him the League record as well by a mere .07. Park, who entered the 100 freestyle on Saturday as the fourth seed, earned
her second top finish when she touched in 52.92 ahead of Warwick’s Catherine Chen (53.35), while Houck also brought home his second medal of the weekend in the boys 100 freestyle with a time of 46.85. In a tightly contested race, the junior swimmer just missed his second gold of the meet when Manheim Township’s Charlie Gingrich (46.63) touched just a hair before. Mining Donegal’s final gold of the weekend was Jordynn Park who entered Saturday’s 100 breaststroke as the defending champ and came away with her title still intact in a time of 1:04.79, missing the League record by only .18, while claiming a Donegal school record.
That came after her second-place time of 57.64 in the 100 butterfly Friday night in which she was the number two seed. Joining in the fun was sophomore Claire O’Neill who came away with two bronze medals for her efforts in the 200 IM (2:12.49) as well as the 500 freestyle (5:14.51) where she also set a school record. Hailey Fry (1:09.51) placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke and Grant Liebfried (1:04.54) took sixth in the boy’s portion of the same race. All in all, with the success of her team, Kreider has reason for high hopes heading into the District Three meet, stating, “I am so proud of all my swimmers!”

The Laffoons will speak at 7 p.m. According to https://jayandlaura.com, Jay and Laura met on a blind date 35 years ago and married shortly thereafter. Over the years they have gained insights into youths and marriage as they ministered with Youth for Christ and interviewed countless couples. They founded Celebrate Ministries in 1995, are authors of many books, and are known to be inspiring, engaging, and humorous conference speakers. During the banquet, guests will be given an opportunity to provide financial support for the ministry of REYS. Funds raised will support the multifaceted programming offered to Mount Joy-area youths through the youth center. Sponsorships are still available for tables of eight at the banquet. Individuals who are unable to attend the banquet but would like to contribute financially may go to www.reys.org for more information on how to donate. REYS Youth Center, located at 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy, is celebrating its 37th year of ministry to youths. Hughes stated, “The ministry is designed to be a safe place for young people to go after school and a safe place to learn about Christ.” To those ends, the programs offered by REYS to the children and youths in the area include academic assistance, music classes and piano lessons, Kids Club, open gym time for teenagers, martial arts, and small group meetings for teenagers. Readers may find more information about REYS’ programming at https://reys.org/ programs/.

Hughes anticipates that the Junction Center will have room for the many guests who will want to hear this year’s keynote speakers, Jay and Laura Laffoon. “Jay and Laura are well-known for their conferences and are experienced speakers for youthfocused organizations,” Hughes noted. He explained that last year’s keynote speaker successfully combined comedy and inspiration, so the Laffoons were an obvious choice for the 2019 banquet due to their experience in family ministry and ability to share in a humorous style. “We want everyone to have good fun!” Hughes said. The community is invited to celebrate the ministry of REYS by joining the board, staff members, and volunteers at the banquet, which will include a family-style dinner featuring local favorites of hamloaf, chicken, potatoes, vegetables, and dessert. Complimentary tickets for the event are available by calling the youth center at 717-653-9511 or emailing office@reys.org. Reservations are requested by Friday, March 15. The program will begin at 6 p.m. with dinner, testimonies, and a new ministry video designed to offer guests a snapshot of the ministry and needs of REYS. Hughes noted that his hopes for the event are that REYS’ mission to impact youths for life will be clearly communicated, that the REYS support base will expand as guests hear the annual ministry update from the board and staff, and that volunteers will be encouraged to continue to reach out in Christian love to local youths.

Basket BINGO hours of research, planning and design. In September, Christina Hess and fellow instructor Bill Dussinger brought their senior illustration students to Garden Spot Village to experience the community and learn about the project. Scott Miller, chief marketing officer, and Brandon Adams, graphic designer, presented the vision for
the spring 2019 issue as a recap of Garden Spot Village’s envisioned future. They shared the five goals for the envisioned future, fielded questions and provided feedback on thumbnail concepts the students prepared for the day. In October, 20 students submitted covers for consideration. After a careful
review of the submissions, the creative team selected Troller’s digital painting. The spring/summer 2019 Destination Garden Spot Village will be released in March. For more information about PCA&D, readers may call 717-396-1032 or 800689-0379 or visit www.pcad.edu.

St. Peter’s Catholic Church, South Second and Union streets, Columbia, will begin its Lenten Friday Fish Fry on Friday, March 8, in the Parish Center. The event is open to the public. Food will be available for eat-in or takeout every Friday from March 8 through April 12 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Parking is available adjacent to the Parish Center. Forty years ago, Joanne Haberstroh, Jane Mable and Kit Seibert came up with the idea to hold a Fish Fry every Friday during Lent. The event quickly became popular not only with parishioners but also with other
community members. The Fish Fry has been held annually for the past 40 years. The menu has grown and changed, but it still features a variety of fish platters and other non-meat dishes prepared by the women of the parish with assistance from the men, who help serve and clean up each week. Included in the price of the fish platters are coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, a vegetable, french fries and coffee or tea. Homemade soups, weekly specials, a la carte items and desserts are also available. Popular items include fish sandwiches and the baked
haddock platter. Pictured on front:

Almost 300 teams from 242 high schools across Pennsylvania will compete in district and regional levels of the Statewide Mock Trial Competition sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar Association Young Lawyers Division. Pennsylvania’s mock trial program, now in its 36th year, is recognized as one of the largest in the nation. During the competition, eight-member student teams are given the opportunity to argue both sides of the case in an actual courtroom before a judge. The students, who play the roles of lawyers, witnesses, plaintiffs, and defendants, are assisted by teacher coaches and lawyer advisers in preparing for competition. Lawyers and community leaders serve as jurors for the mock trials. The juries determine the winners in each trial based on the teams’ abilities to prepare their cases, present arguments, and follow court rules. The district and regional levels of the competition will continue throughout February and March. At the conclusion of the local competitions, 14 high school mock trial teams will advance to the Pennsylvania Bar Association Statewide Mock Trial Championships, scheduled on Friday, March 29, and Saturday, March 30, in Harrisburg. The winning team of the state championship will represent Pennsylvania in the national mock trial finals to be held from Thursday, May 16, through Saturday, May 18, in Athens, Ga.
