Donegal will present “The Wizard of Oz”
BY CATHY MOLITORISIt may be 85 years since “The Wizard of Oz” first hit movie screens, but the story’s message is as relevant today as when it debuted, said Nathan Frey, a sophomore who plays the Wizard and Professor Marvel in Donegal High School’s production of the musical.
“I think a big part of this show is going out and figuring things out on your own,” he said. “Dorothy is a young girl, and she goes out and has this wild and crazy adventure with little to no help, and she comes back and has this realization that where she wanted to be was
where she left in the first place.”
“The Wizard of Oz” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 8; at 2 and 7:30 p.m. on

While audiences can expect to see iconic characters on stage, they are also in for a treat with special effects and unique staging, said Rachel Wallace, a sophomore who plays the Wicked Witch of the West.
“There’s going to be lots of smoke, lots of fire,” she said. “I’m going to shoot fire balls while flying on my broom.”
Rachel is just one of several characters who will be flying on the stage, and the cast spent time with a professional crew to learn the basics of using the harnesses.

BY CATHY MOLITORISIt’s been a season of transition for Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) in Mount Joy, and the nonprofit organization is ready for something new.
In mid February, Mark Unger became the new executive director of REYS, bringing with him a rich
background in service.
“Mark is a natural leader, a go-getter, and most importantly, he’s passionate about Jesus and bringing people to Him,” said Jill Meador, REYS board chair.
Last fall, three of the organization’s five staff members announced plans to leave for other positions, Meador said,
BY CATHY MOLITORISAccess to emergency services is an essential part of any community, and for residents of six municipalities in Lancaster County, a new system will ensure services continue.
After a two-year process of study, public meetings and planning, the Municipal Emergency Services Authority of Lancaster County (MESA) debuted in February, providing 911 emergency medical
ambulance services in the northwest region of the county previously provided by Northwest EMS.
“As far as we know, MESA is the first municipal authority in Pennsylvania that is publicly funding EMS services by charging a fee,” said Debra Dupler, MESA board chair. “In fact, we have already been contacted by other municipalities in the commonwealth and across the United States interested in the authority model as a

Friendship and family in “The Wizard of Oz”
BY CATHY MOLITORIS“This is one of those shows that makes you feel good,” said director Dena McKell, describing “The Wizard of Oz.” “Everybody loves this show and how it brings that aspect of family and home together.”
“The Wizard of Oz” will be performed by Encore Home School Productions at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, through Saturday, March 16, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 17.
Although the musical is based on the iconic movie, the directors encouraged the students to make their characters their own.
“We’re not imitating the movie,” said assistant director Jill Panyard. “We wanted to shape the
characters a little differently than the movie. We are shaping Dorothy a bit more like a tomboy, like a hardworking farm girl.”
The cast features about 40 students, ranging in age from 5 to 18. Students represent 12 school districts, including Elizabethtown, Donegal and Columbia.
Rehearsals for “The Wizard of Oz” began in November with character sessions, offering students an opportunity to delve into their characters’ back story to help create in-depth characters on stage.
“Those nuances of the characters are what take good shows and make them great shows,” Panyard said.

and REYS had to pivot. The center paused programming and refocused while preparing for the departure of executive director Cristina Paden, who stayed on through early 2024 to help ease the transition.
REYS has since hired a new office assistant and a community engagement coordinator, along with Unger.
“We truly felt God’s hand throughout the process,” Meador said. “I also want to thank the REYS board and staff for all of their effort to make this next season possible.”
Unger brings with him more than 25 years working in child welfare, including 15 years with Bethany Christian Services.
“REYS appealed to me because it’s a Christian ministry and because it focused on reaching kids in the Donegal School District,” Unger said, noting that his two grown daughters graduated from Donegal High School. “I also felt aligned
with the organization’s mission, vision and values.” He may have just started in his new role, but Unger hit the ground running. He’s focused on a new three-year strategic plan for REYS, including a rebranding of the organization’s name, which will be revealed soon.
REYS also created a new mission statement, streamlined to highlight the organization’s goal. “Our new mission statement is ‘To reach local youth with the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ,’” Unger said.
Now that REYS is fully staffed again, the organization will resume programming five days a week starting Monday, March 11, serving youths in grades one through 12.
Unger, who lives in Elizabethtown with Stefani, his wife of 41 years, enjoys spending time with his five grandchildren, getting outdoors and playing the harmonica. He’s excited about the opportunities he sees at REYS.
“REYS is a safe place for kids to come after school, to have fun, play games, learn about God and connect with staff and volunteers who really care about kids,” Unger said, noting that students receive a meal during their time at REYS and that all programs and services are provided free of charge. “It’s wonderful to have a community center like REYS right here in Mount Joy.”
Meador is excited to have Unger on board and to offer more opportunities to serve the wider community.
REYS will host a community worship night on Tuesday, March 19, from 7 to 8 p.m.
“I felt like the Lord put it on my heart to host a worship night at REYS,” she said. “I would love to see the churches of Mount Joy be unified and come together. This is an opportunity for pastors and staff to come and not be in charge - just come and worship. The community can come for a night of worship and praying in small groups.”
Registration is not required for the worship night, Meador said, and plenty of parking is available behind the building at 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy. For more information on REYS, visit https://reys.org.
well-known character and portraying their own interpretation has been a focal point of rehearsals.
“Finding the witch voice was kind of a struggle,” Rachel admitted. “I’ve looked to the movie for inspiration in how she acts and the different tones, moods and facial expressions.”
For Hannah Slobozien, a senior who plays Dorothy, inspiration is coming from Judy Garland mixed with her own elements.
“All of my past roles have been much crazier, so I’m trying to find the stillness of Dorothy, but also the youthfulness and the playfulness that Dorothy would
have,” she said. “At the same time, she does grow and develop and mature, so showing that side of her and the maturity she ends up having is important, too.”
Donegal’s production features a cast of students ranging in age from young elementary school kids to high-school seniors. The role of Toto, Dorothy’s dog, will be portrayed by Lily Graybill, who will operate an oversized marionette of the pup.
For Hannah and Nathan, getting to work with the younger students has provided an opportunity to come full circle. Both were
in Donegal musicals before they entered high school, and they are enjoying the chance to serve as role models and mentors to kids they hope will be a part of Donegal Performing Arts (DPA) when they get to high school.
Among the special effects, flying and puppetry, audiences can expect to see a timeless message of friendship and the meaning of home in the show, Nathan said.
“When you say ‘Wizard of Oz,’ everybody immediately knows what you’re talking about,” he said. “When you say ‘yellow brick road,’ everybody
immediately knows what you’re talking about. I’m hoping we can put our own little DPA spin on this and make people appreciate the story in a way they haven’t before.”

of the West, said audiences can expect to see a polished, elaborate performance.
“They will be blown away by the dance numbers. They are amazing,” she stated. She added that learning to perform the show to recorded music has been challenging, but the cast members are up to the task.
“We have to work with the music, and we have a very limited amount of time to get lines in before the music switches to something else,” she explained. “With a live orchestra, they can slow it down if they need to, but we have to be sure we’re on pace.”
Josiah Evans, a senior from Elizabethtown who plays The Cowardly Lion, said he challenged himself not to be influenced by the movie or the well-known character he’s portraying.
“I had to tell myself that every depiction of this role is going to be unique,” he said. “I wanted to create my
own part.”
He encourages audiences to see the show, adding, “It’s centered on friendship and the values of having good friends and the values of appreciating all you have in your life and being grateful. People should come see the show because it’s going to be very heartwarming.”
Grace emphasized that it takes a team of parents and students to pull together a show full of elaborate props, costumes and sets.
“When you see this show, you’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg. The parents and the kids have spent countless hours on behindthe-scenes work, and you only see the end product,” she said. “To know the full extent of what has gone into creating this show, it’s really amazing to think about that.”

solution to their own EMS funding challenges.”
MESA emerged as a solution to challenges facing Northwest EMS and its ability to serve the community.
“MESA’s public funding model addresses two primary problems. The first is that health insurance reimbursements for EMS services only occur on a per-call basis and cover only about half of the total cost of service. Insurance doesn’t pay for ambulances to be staffed, equipped and ready 24/7,” Dupler explained. “The second is that fewer than 40% of residents participated in Northwest EMS’ voluntary subscription program. This combination of inadequate insurance reimbursements and a lack of voluntary subscriptions left Northwest EMS deeply underfunded. The annual fee paid to MESA ensures that ambulances are ready to respond 24/7 and that EMS services can operate on a fiscally sustainable basis.”
MESA will provide services to residents in Conoy Township, East Donegal Township, Elizabethtown Borough, Marietta Borough, Mount Joy Township and West Donegal Township.
“Municipalities are responsible for many things - recreation facilities, police services, stormwater management and snow removal to name a few. In Pennsylvania, municipalities are also required by law to ensure the provision of emergency medical services,” Dupler explained. “As a municipal EMS authority, MESA provides this essential public service. MESA is municipal-led, publicly funded and dedicated to providing outstanding emergency care to people in its member municipalities on a sustainable basis.”
GEARS sets programs
GEARS will offer activities to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person cost, with a discounted rate for residents. To register or for more information, visit www .getintogears.org or call 717-367-0355.
March 14. A class for beginners will be held from noon to 1 p.m., and an intermediate class will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. Lessons will cover basic techniques, rules, and strategies. All equipment will be provided.
The annual fee community members pay will provide a variety of benefits, she said, including no residual bills for EMS services if the patient’s insurance pays, 50% off EMS bills if the patient does not have insurance coverage and 50% off EMS bills if the patient’s payment applies to an insurance deductible.
The path to forming MESA began in 2018 when Northwest EMS was facing insufficient revenue and rising costs. A committee of local municipal leaders pursued the solution as a way to meet community needs.
As MESA gets underway, the organization plans to continue not only providing emergency services, but also offering community engagement opportunities.
“Northwest EMS is tremendously grateful for the community’s partnership through the years,” Dupler said. “MESA looks forward to serving the community with the same outstanding service for which Northwest EMS is known, and community involvement and public safety education will continue to be an important part of our mission.”
For more information on MESA, visit www.mesalan casterpa.gov.

The purpose of Camp Ladybug is to provide a fun atmosphere where campers may build socialization skills and participate in recreational activities. The organization’s mission is simple: to create a platform where both performers and community can unite, fostering a shared love and appreciation for the art of theater.
“All levels of performers are welcome to join as MPACT is where you go to learn and grow,” Charito said.
The organization currently rents space in a local church gym to practice, and performances are held at the Junction Center.

“Participation is open to students from any school district, as this is a community organization,” said Charito Faulkner, MPACT director and board president. Performers will sign up for an audition timeslot and should come prepared with a 30- to 60-second song and a 30- to 60-second monologue.
Charito and her husband, Karl, formed MPACT after volunteering for an organization called iStage Performing Arts. “Around 2018, the owners had to dissolve the organization for personal reasons, and we approached them to take over the organization,”
When she’s not at MPACT, Charito is an elementary school teacher. She indulges her love of performing, including a background in chorus, cheerleading, color guard and musical performance, as a volunteer with MPACT. “The passion for performing has always been a part

She hopes students will try out for the musical and encourages anyone who isn’t already a part of MPACT to consider joining.

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) has planned several programs, which are free and open to the public.
The LCBC will hold a meeting on Thursday, March 14, at 7 p.m. at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster.
Todd Underwood, a professor of biology at Kutztown University (KU), will present Migration Patterns and Overwintering Locations of Veeries in South America.
Veeries are songbirds that breed in dense, moist forests of eastern North America and are easily recognized by their distinctive song. Using the latest tracking technology, Underwood followed the migration of veeries from their breeding grounds to their overwintering sites in South America. The presentation will discuss patterns of veery migration and describe the overwintering locations and habitats of these birds in South America.
Underwood earned a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Manitoba in Canada. At KU, he teaches courses on topics such as ornithology and animal behavior, and he studies the behavior and ecology of birds. For the past 25 years, his research has focused on host defenses against avian brood parasitism. Recently,
he began a long-term study of the ecology of veeries breeding at French Creek State Park. Christopher M. Heckscher from Delaware State University served as a co-author on this presentation.
For more information, call 717-856-3851 or 717-725-2717.
The LCBC will also offer two field trips in March. Preregistration by 6 p.m. the day before the trip is required.

As part of its On Screen/ In Person series, the Arts at Millersville University will present a screening of the documentary “Our American Family” on Wednesday, March 13, at 7 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster.
“Our American Family” is a portrait of a closeknit Philadelphia family grappling with the legacy of generational substance abuse. Captured at a pivotal time over the course of a year, the footage shows the five family members
struggling to find hope and explore what is possible through love.

Ashworth, president judge of the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas and founder of the Lancaster Drug Court; Kayla Weiler, manager of addiction medicine at Penn Medicine; and Chris Dreisbach, CEO of Blueprints for Addiction Recovery and
addiction survivor.
After the film showing, there will be a question-and-answer session with the film’s director, Hallee Adelman, and the mother of the family featured in the documentary, Linda Geraghty.
Tickets are free but required for entry. They may be reserved at www .artsmu.com, by calling 717-871-7600, or in person at the Ware Center or at the Student Memorial Center on the campus of Millersville University.
