The annual spring Iron Furnace Walking Tour sponsored by Rivertownes PA USA will be held on Sunday, April 7, at 1 p.m. The tour, in its 17th year, will start at the Musselman/Vesta Iron Furnace Center, 26 Furnace Road, Marietta, in the Lancaster County Chickies Day Use Park. The tour will begin with an overview of the role that the Susquehanna River played in the Industrial Revolution during the mid1800s to early 1900s. The walk will include tours at the Henry Clay Furnace and the Musselman/ Vesta Iron Furnace Center. The Musselman/Vesta was nominated and received the Community Initiative Award from the Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Awards, which honor individuals and organizations that exhibited excellence in the field of historic preservation. The awards are presented by Preservation Pennsylvania, a statewide,
private nonprofit membership organization dedicated to preserving Pennsylvania’s historic places through creative partnerships, targeted educational and advocacy programs, special projects, and technical assistance. Several changes have taken place recently at the Musselman/Vesta Iron Furnace Center. The center has been given an extension of its lease to include the furnace ruins. This will allow Rivertownes to clear more of the ruins. Also, Rivertownes has installed eight self-guided panels in the area. These panels will guide visitors through the ruins when the center is not open. The Dr. June Evans Henry Clay Furnace Exhibit is a new addition at the Iron Center. The exhibit houses many of the artifacts dug up during the 1989 to 1994 summer field studies conducted by Evans and students from Millersville University. See Walking Tour pg 9

“When I picked up the script (for a read-through), I laughed multiple times,” Promise Players community Christian theater group director Doreen Creighton said of choosing this spring’s play, “Mobile Home Sweet Home” by Pat Cook. “There’s a lot of sarcasm, and Tim (Strawser) pulls it off very well.” At the center of it all is Strawser’s character, Loff DuVall, who has run the Hampton Court trailer park with his wife, May June (Linda Ross), for more years than he can count. Loff is hoping to take May June on a vacation to escape the zaniness of the residents. Vonell Rafferty (Laura Scott-Wise) tries multiple income schemes, the latest of which is searching for treasure with a metal detector. Lydia Spagway (Melody Risser) needs help removing her grandchild’s hand from where it is stuck in a toilet. Rhonda DeFalco (Wanda Jenkins) just wants to gossip, and Goose
Halford (Ken Hess) tells long stories, such as how his grandpa has a metal plate in his head. “The kids used to catch him asleep and put ‘frigerator magnets on his forehead,” Goose relates to Loff. Compounding the stress is a request from Loff’s future daughter-in-law, Anne (Christine Tedesco), who wants to film a reality television show in Hampton Court. And, to add insult to injury, Etta Frobisher (Creighton) has it in for Hampton Court. “She’s being nitpicky and trying to find anything to get this shut down,” Creighton said of her character. “She’s bossy and hungry for power. She’s just a bully.” Frobisher is not any kinder to her younger sister, Edith Maxwell, who is played by Creighton’s reallife older sister, Karen Ungemach. Ungemach is also a volunteer at the organization that will be benefited by the proceeds from the show’s performances. Limitless homemade chicken potpie will be on the menu at the Ruhl’s United Methodist Church Mission Outreach Team’s sixth annual fundraising dinner, to be held at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, on Saturday, March 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. or until sold out. Separate costs have been set for adults and for children ages 6 to 12; children age 5 and under may eat for free. In addition to all-youcan-eat potpie, meals will include green beans, coleslaw, applesauce, and a choice from a variety of homemade desserts. Assorted beverages will be available, as well. Attendees may eat on-site or take a meal to go. Quarts of potpie will also be available for purchase to take home. According to organizer Gail Ruhl, mission team members get together in the morning before the event to cook up the potpie, which includes 150 pounds of roaster chicken, potatoes, and homemade noodles as part of the famous church recipe. The team knows that “many hands make light work,” and organizers help the process move along. “Curt Diffenderfer is our go-to guy,” Ruhl mentioned. “He is the one who leads the kitchen and makes sure everything is running smoothly.” Funds raised from the event will help the mission work of the

Ruhl noted that some monies are earmarked for local organizations such as food banks, while additional funds are sent to worldwide missions. A focus for this year’s fundraiser is the Mission Outreach Team’s upcoming trip to Clendenin, W.Va., from June 15 to 22. The team plans to travel to the town in the Appalachia area along the Elk River, where participants will help rebuild several homes and buildings affected by catastrophic flooding in 2016. “This is a more impoverished area that is still recovering and in need of help,” Ruhl shared. The team, consisting of teenagers and adults, plans to help with construction and other odd jobs as needed.
Fundraisers like the potpie dinner are a key part of the Mission Outreach Team’s ability to serve locally, nationally, and internationally. W hile the events serve to offset the costs of travel and material assistance, the fundraiser gatherings are also a way for the local community to gather in fellowship and fun. “(The potpie dinner) really is a nice event where people can come and relax and just enjoy a good homemade meal and some fellowship with friends and family,” Ruhl said. “Folks can also get to know Ruhl’s Church and see what we’re about.” For additional details on the chicken potpie dinner, readers may visit www.ruhlschurch.org or call 717-665-3400.

Girls On The Run from pg 1 from more than 200 other GOTR locations as the recipient of the GOTR PaceSetters Award. The award was given in the GameChanging Relationships category based on a number of examples of ways GOTR of LancasterLebanon has built partnerships with community members and organizations. Among these are a two-year program involving nine Elizabethtown College students who have completed a service project with the program, and the production of the GOTR documentary “Run With Your Heart,” which was created in 2018. The program also worked with a local author on a book that is used to supplement the organization’s curriculum and has partnered with Penn Medicine/LG Health to showcase the GOTR participants in various presentations.
The curriculum and training session culminates in the GOTR spring 5K, when the participants complete a local course with a buddy. This year’s run will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, at Sponaugle-Williamson Field, Franklin & Marshall College, 415 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster. “We encourage the community to join us,” said Johnson of the run, which is open to the public and offers a fairly flat course in Lancaster city. The run will start on College Avenue and turn left on West James Street and then right on North Water Street. Runners will then turn right on West Lemon Street, which becomes Buchanan Avenue. Participants will proceed right onto State Street and go right again on West James Street. The course will turn left on Race Avenue before taking a left on West Clay Street. Run-
ners will then turn left on State Street and left again on West Frederick Street before returning to the Franklin & Marshall campus and ending on the school track. Funds raised by the event support scholarships for girls who need financial assistance to participate in the GOTR program. More than 6,000 girls have received this assistance from the Lancaster-Lebanon program. The atmosphere prior to a GOTR 5K is always unique because it includes pre-race primping for the girls, but this year, Johnson said that runners will see evidence of the 10-year celebration on T-shirts and through activities. The organization will also hold an Evening of Gratitude event on Friday, March 22, to celebrate those individuals who have contributed to the program’s success. “We just want to

health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. WellSpan Philhaven was one of just two mental health organizations in the state to receive a Mental Health Awareness Training grant from SAMHSA in 2018. The other one is NAMI in Erie County. WellSpan Philhaven will use the funds to expand two of its training programs: Mental Health First Aid and QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer). Both programs teach people how to
recognize and respond to someone who is having mental health problems or crises. The training shows people how to respond to someone in a way that may help prevent a tragedy. Eight partner community organizations will initially receive the training, including For the Love of a Veteran in Hanover, the Lebanon County Correctional Facility, Warwick School District in Lititz, and the We Matter Coalition in Hershey. The grant-funded training will
be offered in addition to WellSpan Philhaven’s ongoing Mental Health First Aid and QPR training, which is particularly geared toward suicide prevention. WellSpan Philhaven’s certified trainers have taught more than 2,000 people in the two programs to date. The training is offered at no cost as part of its community benefit programs. Donors also help to fund the training programs. To learn more, readers may visit www.wellspan.org.

Strength does not always lie in numbers and the small group of Donegal swimmers definitely prove that point. While Donegal does not officially have a swim team, a handful of athletes do compete as nonswim school participants and are able to qualify for the post-season and boy have they made a splash this year. A mix of nine boys and girls make up the group of Indians that took to the pool in the District Three 2A meet that was held at Cumberland Valley High School from March 2 through March 3. Of those nine, 11 medals were won and five swimmers qualified for the PIAA meet which will be held this weekend at Bucknell University. “The District (meet) is a very intense swim meet, the swimmers either perform well or not, stated head coach Alison Kreider. “I had a few swimmers that worked so hard all season long and I wanted them to do better than they did and that hurts. They have next year to do it. It’s a learning experience for them all on how to deal with the ups and downs of swimming. Add Jake Houck to the list of those that most definitely performed as he collected two gold medals over the two days of competition and earned an automatic ticket to states in the 100 butterfly as well as the 100 freestyle with the latter proving to be a split-second win for the junior. In that race he

was challenged by Bishop McDevitt’s Josiah Lauver who, with a time of 46.50, was only a hair away from Houck’s first place finish in 46.47, while Indian teammate Aeden Wilkinson (50.76) finished 11th to complement his ninth-place finish of 2:07.20 in the 200 IM. That was Houck’s second gold medal of the weekend and preceded his victory in the 100 butterfly where he outswam the field with a time of 51.00. In that same race, Grant Leibfried clocked a time of 56.31 to finish behind his teammate in sixth place and then proceeded to earn another sixth-place medal the following day in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.99, only a half-second ahead of Logan Fry (1:03.49) who placed 10th. Fry also finished 13th in the 200 freestyle in 1:54.89. Ethan Shonk joined Houck as the only other boy to qualify for the PIAA meet and did so in the lone event he was entered. His time of 55.47 in the 100 backstroke placed Shonk third and earned him a trip to the big stage in the process. A total of three girls qualified for the PIAA meet in two events each and in doing so, two Donegal school records fell by the wayside. Sisters Jordynn and Jenna Park swam well enough to make the cut as did Claire O’Neill whose second-place time of 2:10.40 in the 200 IM, a new school record, and fourth place finish of 5:18.48 in the 50 freestyle punched her ticket. Jordynn also found herself in a

In that same race, Hailey Fry (1:10.49) finished 10th, adding to her 16th place time of 2:02.26 in the 200 freestyle. Older sister Jenna used two third place finishes to advance to states beginning with Friday’s 50 freestyle in which she tied Skyler Strunk of
Brandywine Heights with both girls clocking in at 23.94. In her second event of the weekend, the senior found herself challenged as well by Gallagher (53.45), but snagged the bronze by less than a second when she touched in 53.34. “I am excited to see what my swimmers will do at States, said Kreider. “Jenna is going for her last time and I want her to do well and finish her high school swimming career on a high note. She will continue her college swimming career at Bloomsburg and I look forward to see what she can do there next season.

IU 13 Posts ESY Summer Job Fair By Ann Mead Ash
According to Noel Johns, human resources recruiter for the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU 13) Extended School Year (ESY) program, the summer program offers employment not only for special education teachers, paraprofessionals, speech therapists, occupational and physical therapists, and nurses, but also for high school graduates who are considering going into the social work or education field. “We need people who have an interest and a heart and a love for working with students with special needs,” said Johns. To help fill the job roster for the five-week program, which will run from Monday, June 24, through Thursday, July 25, IU 13 will hold an ESY Job Fair on Wednesday, March 20, at the Conference and Training Center, 1020 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, from 3 to 6 p.m. Most programs, which are based out of more than a dozen locations, run from 8 a.m. to noon on Mondays through Thursdays, but one location will hold a full-day program. Classes will not be held on Thursday, July 4. According to Katie Schultz, ESY program supervisor, the program is for students determined to be eligible based on their individualized education plans and their local school district’s team. Students who are matriculating within the IU 13 go through a similar process. “Students who are eligible are selected for referral based on regression and recoupment skills,” said Schultz. “(Eligible students) receive instruction in areas where their teams

The Shaarai Shpielers will perform their 21st annual Purimshpiel, “HAME-an,” on Sunday, March 24, at 1:30 p.m. at Congregation Shaarai Shomayim, 75 E. James St., Lancaster. The Purimshpiel is a comic production with participants wearing costumes that depict the characters in the story in the Book of Esther, the central text and narrative that describes what transpired on Purim and why it has become an important Jewish holiday. Each year the Shpielers take the songs from a particular American musical, parody the lyrics of those songs, and merge the themes of that musical with the story of Esther. This year the musical is “Mame.” The major roles are played by Elliot Sterenfeld (Mordechai), Josh Schwartz (King Achashveyrosh), Kevin Babione (Esther) and Melanie DeSantis (Haman). Other cast members include Ellie Blumen-

have determined they need to maintain to be successful in the next school year,” she stated, adding that students in kindergarten through 12th grade and up to age 21 in certain circumstances will be served by the program. “We keep the (student’s) placement the same as during the school year, so if they’re in a self-contained classroom, we keep that the same and by grade level and location,” explained Schultz. In 2018, ESY served 600 students, but Schultz noted that this year more than 1,000 students may take part because districts that previously ran their own programs have decided to partner with the IU 13. Johns stated that the expanded program will mean that increased staff must be hired. “To support the number of classrooms and students, we will need more than 400 staff members,” said Johns, who added that although a number of IU 13 staff members will probably sign on, more employees will be needed. “It’s a nice summer job, and it’s an opportunity to get some experience,” shared Johns. “We provide a lot of training prior to the onset of ESY on working with students on the autism spectrum, those in multiple disabilities classrooms, first aid, and CPR,” she said, adding, “We make sure we have staff that is a mix of experienced with newer staff.” Readers who are interested in more information may visit www.iu13.org. Lancaster Farmland Trust’s (LFT) Pedal to Preserve (P2P) bike ride will change form in 2019. For more than 20 years, cyclists have enjoyed scenic rides of 6, 20 or 50 miles over Lancaster County’s rural roadways as part of LFT’s charity bike ride. This year, though, LFT will hold a virtual event that encourages riders to set out on
their own favorite loop around the county. Along the way, LFT is asking riders to snap pictures of the classic Lancaster County scenery and share them on social media. Details for the virtual event are still being finalized. Readers may visit www.lancasterfarmlandtrust.org in early April for more information and to register to participate.
