Children’s book teaches about talking to God
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“Whenwe include God in our day, God shows us amazing things,” said author Krista Snyder. Krista, who lives in Elizabethtown, has published a book with this message. “Basil’s Blessings: My Special Day With God” is geared toward children ages 4 to 7. It tells the story of Basil, a little inchworm, and the adventures he encounters with a bluebird named BB.
Although the book was published in December 2021, the story was much longer in the making, Krista said. “This was a 20-year project for me,” she remarked. “When God wants something to happen, He makes it happen in His time.”
Krista’s original story wasn’t religious, although it was full of positive messages. Over the years, she kept coming back to the draft, tweaking and changing it. Teaching 4-year-olds at her church, St. Peter Catholic Church in Elizabethtown, helped Krista change the scope of her story. “God helped me to develop this story,” she stated. “Everything in my story, God helped me to write.”
During the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, Krista reached out to Caracyn Publishing, a Grantvillebased publisher, about her story. The finished product, illustrated by Nancy Landis, is a book that features multiple themes. “One of the themes is from 1 Thessalonians 5:17, ‘pray without ceasing,’” said Krista, who works as a purchasing agent for G.E. Richards Graphic Supplies in Landisville. “My job is stressful, and I pray my way through my day. My book shows kids how easy it is in every moment of the day to talk to God. My inchworm talks to God and includes God in his day.”
Another theme in the book comes from Isaiah 6:3, “The whole earth is full of His glory,” and the book also stresses the importance of loving your enemies and talking to others about God. The story also teaches a lesson about the power of God. “Who would think a bluebird and an inchworm would become friends?” Krista said. “But with God, anything is possible.”
Krista included three songs she wrote the lyrics for in the book as well as activity pages and facts about inchworms and dandelions. On her website, www.kristasnyderbooks.com,
readers may download several lesson plans she wrote that are connected to the book as well.
When she’s not writing, Krista enjoys spending time with her husband, Mike, and their dog, Buffy. A portion of the proceeds of each book sold will benefit Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtown-based organization that supports adoption of children with special needs.
Krista said she has ideas for more books, and she’d love to turn Basil’s story into a series. She hopes that anyone who picks up “Basil’s Blessings” will read it and come away with a renewed relationship with God. “I truly believe if a child learns to talk to God when he or she is young, they will turn into an amazing individual when they grow up,” she said.
“Basil’s Blessings: My Special Day With God” is available for purchase at Trellis Marketplace, 153 E. High St., Elizabethtown; Vintage & Co., 3545 Marietta Ave., Lancaster; Weinhold Chiropractic, 535 Farmview Lane, Mount Joy; and www.kristasnyder books.com. Krista will sell and sign copies of her book at an Art, Craft and Yard Sale at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry St., Columbia, on Saturday, June 3.
Bringing art outdoors
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
You’ll have a chance to see artists in action when River Towns Plein Air (RTPA) is held throughout the Columbia and Marietta areas. Sixty artists will compete for $5,000 in cash awards during the juried exhibition that concludes the event, and artists will paint en plein air - outdoors - leading up to the show.
RTPA is organized by Marietta Art Alive! The nonprofit is dedicated to cultivating art, heritage and recreation in the lower Susquehanna River Valley. The activities will begin on Wednesday, April 12, when artists will paint outdoors in locations along
the Lancaster and York sides of the Susquehanna River. Artists come from across Pennsylvania and as far away as Connecticut and New York, said Marita Hines, owner of MH Art Gallery and co-founder of Marietta Art Alive! Each artist will choose a location, paint his or her pieces between April 12 and Wednesday, April 19, and then display the resulting artwork from Friday, April 21, through Sunday, April 23, at Studio 264, located behind the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St. Gary Tucker will be the juror for the exhibition, which is open to the public and free to attend. People will also have the opportunity to purchase the artwork.

Celebrate Easter with pancakes and baby lambs
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For more than 15 years, St. John’s Episcopal Church in Marietta has been hosting a spring pancake breakfast. This year, the event, to be held from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 1, will feature some special guests - baby lambs.
“We were planning for this year’s breakfast, and our minister said, ‘A bunny really is not a religious symbol of Easter,’” recalled committee member Nancy Kulman. “He challenged us to come up with a better symbol than the Easter Bunny.” The group came up with the idea of a
lamb because the animal has a religious significance, she said, but then the real challenge began. “We had to find a lamb,” Kulman stated with a laugh.
It turned out the church organist raises sheep, and he had a mother ewe and baby lamb the church could use for the event. The committee also learned that a member of the vestry had a baby lamb as well. “We’re planning to have the mom and baby outside, weather permitting, and then we’ll have another baby lamb inside,” Kulman shared. “People can take pictures and pet the animals.”

Drawing on his talent
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Spend five minutes with Donovan Spencer, and you’ll walk away in a better mood. Donovan radiates infectious enthusiasm and positivity, and he’s channeled that spirit into his art, which he’s now sharing with the public. The 26-year-old from Columbia has published two coloring books, one featuring Christmas pages and one
called “Fun in the 4 Seasons.”
Donovan, who is the son of Crystal and Tony Spencer, has loved to draw since he was a child. “I watched ‘Blues Clues,’ and I loved that show so much,” he recalled. “It inspired me.”
Last September, he was coming home from his job at Walmart when his mom issued a challenge. “I said, ‘If you draw a page every day of October, a picture of something fun that
reminds you of Christmas, I’ll give myself the challenge of getting it published,’” Crystal said.
Donovan got right to work, and he completed 31 pages for the Christmas coloring book. “I wasn’t sure he was going to fulfill his part, but he did, so I said, ‘Well, I guess Mom has to fulfill her challenge now,’ so I started looking for publishers,” Crystal noted. A Google search led her to Arnold Printed Communications in Lancaster, and the company responded to her email inquiry almost immediately. “They said they wanted to make Donovan’s dream come true,” Crystal shared.
Beyond creating a coloring book, Donovan has always had a bigger dream, he said. “I wanted to open my own company and make things that make people happy,” he remarked. The coloring book was his first project under the name Uncontainable Entertainment. “To put it simply, I named it that because of my enthusiasm,” he said. “I can’t help but be enthusiastic, and I let it burst out.”
The Spencers ordered an initial run of 100 copies of the Christmas coloring book, and 10 sold to people at the printing company before Donovan had even seen the finished product. He sold the rest at his church, the Lord’s House of Prayer in Lancaster. “They sold like hotcakes,” Donovan commented. They were so popular, another 100 copies were ordered and also sold out.
W hile selling books at church, Donovan talked to a woman whose husband was part of a group from the church taking a mission trip to Kenya in mid-March. “She said she’d love for him to do another book, with proceeds going toward the trip,” Crystal said. “She wanted this coloring book to represent everyday things.” “Fun in the 4 Seasons” was published in late February.
With two successful coloring books completed, Donovan doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon. “I want to do a book series about animals in the stories in the Bible and fairytales,” he shared.
Donovan, who has autism, said drawing is a way to help him process the world around him. He can often be found sketching what he hears during the sermon at church. “He likes to call himself ‘the autistic artist,’” Crystal said.
When asked where he thinks his talent comes from, Donovan doesn’t hesitate to answer. “I give my thanks for all of this to He who is above all,” he said. “None of this would be possible without Him.”
To order a copy of “Fun in the 4 Seasons,” email Crystal at spncrus@yahoo.com.

Art frompg 1
On Saturday, April 15, RTPA will feature a Quick Draw event from 10 a.m. to noon. Open to artists of all ages, this competition will challenge community members to choose a location from a map and paint for two hours before framing
their art and setting the finished product up on an easel in the block of the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St. Matt Allyn Chapman, co-owner of Curio, will be the juror for the Quick Draw. “Children are invited to participate
this year, and we’ll be giving them free art supplies while they last,” Hines commented. Children’s artwork will be unframed, and children do not need to register for the Quick Draw. Participants age 18 and older may register at the Columbia Market House onthe morning of the event or at www.mariettaartalive.com/qd. The rain date for the Quick
Draw will be Sunday, April 16.
Proceeds from RTPA will be used to fund more art events in the community, Hines said. “The plein air event brings in hundreds of new and returning visitors to the river towns,” she noted. “The quality of the artwork at the show continues to get better each year, draw in more patrons and art lovers.”
This year, in addition to the plein air event, Marietta Art Alive! was able to fund two themed juried art shows“Song for Autumn” and “Spaces Within.”
RTPA also provides an opportunity for collaboration with other local organizations, Hines remarked. “Create Columbia organized the Quick Draw for us this year,” she stated. “All pro-
ceeds from that event go to their nonprofit organization. Over time, it is our desire to get more organizations and businesses in the river towns involved in this event.”
The exhibition and sale will run from 5 to 9 p.m. on April 21; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 22; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 23. For more information, visit www.mariettaartalive.com.

Houck, Wilkinson represent Donegal at states
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
Sierra Houck and Kylie Wilkinson represented Donegal at the PIAA Class 2A Girls Swimming & Diving Championships, which were held at Bucknell University on March 15-18.
“They trained with their club, Elizabethtown Aquatic Club, and left Tuesday for Bucknell,” said Isaac Greene, the swim coach for Donegal - a school without a swim team.
“I’m both their high school and club coach,” Greene added.
Wilkinson swam the 200-yard freestyle but came up short for the consolations or the finals. She registered a time of 2:04.60
“Sierra swam a personal best
24.54 to make the consolation finals, just missing out on the finals - 10th place,” Greene said of Houck’s time in the 50-freestye.
“She did compete in the B finals, earning a nearly best 24.79.”
The second day of competition had Houck competing in the 100 freestyle.
“She had a personal best 54.41, just missing the A Finals,” Greene noted.
“Both girls were very proud and enjoyed their final high school meet,” said Greene. “I am very proud of their hard work, dedication, and commitment. I’m honored to have been able to coach them.”
With the two seniors leaving the program, including Wilkin-
son’s commitment to Messiah University, according to the coach, Greene spoke of next year’s prospects.
“Donegal looks to compete again next year at PIAA’s,” he said. “Even with four departing seniors, we anticipate at least two freshmen swimmers next year.”

Wellness Call program launched
Jeff McMenamin, community and customer support manager at United Disabilities Services (UDS), launched a Wellness Call program, using grants and donations to help provide wellness calls to individuals free of charge for a limited time. Realizing how much the COVID-19 pandemic brought isolation upon the population, especially the aging community and those with disabilities, the idea for the Wellness Call program was born.
With the rapid onset of technology that makes it easier to stay home, the risk of isolation is growing. The
calls provide security to individuals who may be isolated and offers peace of mind that someone cares and is actively checking on them.
Check-in calls make sure individuals are comfortable and completing daily living activities such as taking their medications and eating properly and also assesses the mood for safety in the home. Conversational calls offer a more in-depth conversation about family, hobbies, and current events and provide a sense of connection.

Kinetic expands fiber broadband service area
Nearly 2,200 homes, businesses and schools in Berks, Chester and Lancaster counties are now eligible for fiber broadband, high-speed internet provided by Kinetic.
The service was announced during an event held at the Caernarvon Township Municipal Building in Morgantown, which also included a ceremonial ribbon-cutting for fiber broadband. Participants included Pennsylvania Telephone Association president Steven Samara; Lydia Messner, an aide for state Sen. Scott Margin; Kinetic state public affairs vice president Jeanne Shearer; Berks County community and economic development director Pamela ShuppMenet; Twin Valley School District superintendent Patrick Winters; Kinetic state opera-
tions president Susan Schraibman; and Caernarvon Township supervisor Paul Whiteman Sr.
About 900 customers in Berks County, 750 in Chester County and 550 in Lancaster County are now eligible for fiber. That total of nearly 2,200 customers will likely increase to more than 3,100 by this time next year, Kinetic esti-
mates. Kinetic’s fiber-optic broadband lets users upload and download at up to 1 gigabit per second, or 1,000 megabits a second, providing what is known as “next-generation access.”
