According to Kim Beach, the library’s operations coordinator, the series promises to be interesting to both new and longtime residents. “We have a lot of people new to the area and people who have lived here forever but don’t know much about the history,” she said. “We want to get people talking and interested. We hope it will have a ripple effect and get people to be involved in their (local) historical societies.” Beach, who started as operations director in July 2018, said that the series is being offered at a perfect time as the library celebrates its 20th anniversary at its current location. “I never saw a series about the towns that comprise (our service area),” she said. “I thought it would be fun to do to learn about the history and how we all got here.” The guest speaker on April 15 will be Bob Lescallette. He is a graduate of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, now known as the United Lutheran Seminary, and was pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Maytown for more than 40 years. He co-founded the Maytown Historical Society, and, in 2010, he wrote a history of Maytown, titled “‘Round the Square: A 250th Anniversary History of Maytown, PA 17602010.” Lescallette describes himself as an author, a pastor, an historian and a “Maytowner.” “Mount Joy Memories” will be presented by guest speaker Jean Ellis, a native of Mount Joy. A retired legal secretary, Ellis has a Bachelor of Arts in English from Millersville University. She is president of the Mount Joy Area Historical Society and has written five booklets about Mount Joy history. Beach said that Ellis will likely discuss how the historical society acquired and refurbished the 1842 Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, a 900-square-foot one-room schoolhouse in Mount Joy, located next to the society’s museum. The two guest speakers on May 20 will be Catherine Tucker and Dave Haneman. Tucker, a longtime resident of Marietta, is

CASA seeks to ensure a qualified, compassionate adult will fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to learn and grow in the security of a loving family. The eight new CASAs are Annie Rose Ansley of Lancaster, Charles Blakinger of Lititz, Kelley Greiner of Lititz, Bonnie Horton of Lancaster, Ellen St. Cyr of Lititz, Leigh Trayer of Lititz, Kim Wallover of Lancaster, and Rebecca Nauman of Mount Joy. Brian Hartz, founder of HARTZ PT, was born and raised in Lancaster County. Following graduation from PT school and a few years working in the outpatient field of PT, he desired to start a physical therapy clinic that focused on providing the highest quality of patient care while giving patients excellent customer service. Still independently owned, HARTZ continues to grow through its excellent reputation in the community and vast word-of-mouth referral system. HARTZ recognizes the many options for physical therapy in Lancaster County, including large hospital- and physicianowned PT clinics as well as clinics owned by large national PT chains and investment groups. Still, HARTZ, a locally owned, independent physical therapy clinic, has continued a steady growth pattern through internal development of staff, starting from one location in Lititz and expanding to five locations. Noting that HARTZ PT has never lost a physical therapist to a competitor, Brian said, “We are very fortunate to have an outstanding staff. It’s my goal to create an environment in which my staff members enjoy coming to work each day, so they can in turn ensure our patients receive the best possible care.” According to HARTZ representatives, independent clinics can feature lower reimbursement rates from insurance companies, which can result in savings for patients. Customer service is also a focus at HARTZ. HARTZ PT Mount Joy features a full range of physical therapy equipment as well as a warm pool for aquatic therapy. In addition, a running clinic is offered, focusing on correction and improvement of form and function. The clinic director of HARTZ PT Mount Joy is Bobby Longenecker, DPT, who has been recognized for outstanding patient satisfaction. He has been clinic director of HARTZ’s Ephrata office and is looking forward to building the business’s newest office. “Movement is such a big part of our everyday lives,” he noted. “I enjoy helping my patients improve function so they can get back to what they enjoy doing.” Longenecker enjoys treating a wide variety of diagnosed conditions. Also trained to lead the running clinic, he is currently a competitive long-distance runner and has a goal to run a marathon in each of the 50 states.

Pennsylvania law requires that patients have a choice where they would like to go to physical therapy, even if their physician refers them to an in-house clinic. Additionally, through Direct Access, patients do not need a physician’s referral to come to physical therapy. Indians Top Barons 6-2 In Season Opener by Vaughn Brown

on Manheim in a road contest last Tuesday, March 26, the Indians complemented a four-hit effort by Sierra Neiss with 12 hits of their own on the way to a 6-2 victory over the Barons. Out dueling Manheim pitcher

Jordan Walter, Neiss threw a complete game with nine strikeouts and While the early spring weather only three walks while holding the wreaked havoc on the opening of a Barons hitless into the fourth inning new sports season, it did little to when Gabby Wettig, who was 1-2 slow down the Donegal softball on the day, doubled into center team in its delayed opener. Taking field to open up. She eventually scored to put Manheim on the board, 5-1. The Indians struck in the second when courtesy runner Lydia Miller, running for Neiss (3-4) who led off with a double, scored from second when Cheyenne Livelsberger’s grounder to second was booted. Livelsberger (1-3, RBI) eventually scored on a fielder’s choice by Aysha Gibbs (1-3, RBI) to make it 2-0. In the third, Donegal scored two more runs beginning with Steph Reider’s single to center which plated Morgan Biesecker (1-4, RBI) who opened the inning by reaching on an error and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Two more sinPhoto by Bob Diller gles by Neiss and Morgan Creek (1Morgan Biesecker takes an at-bat for the Indians during their 6-2 3) loaded the bases for Summer Section Three victory over host Manheim Central last Tuesday.

Steffy (1-4, RBI) whose ground ball to first brought Reider (1-4, RBI) home from third for the 4-0 lead. Emma Miller (1-3) extended the lead to 5-0 in the fourth by reaching first on a bunt to Walter before heading to second on another bunt by Gibbs and then crossing home plate on the throw to first when Biesecker grounded out to short. Manheim added another run in the fifth inning to make it 5-2 before Donegal answered in the sixth on an RBI single into center from Maddie Gohn (2-4, RBI) that sent Gibbs home with the final score of the game. Donegal improved to 2-0 the following Thursday with a shutout of Garden Spot on the road. Neiss held the Spartans to only one hit in a 4-0 victory. The junior hurler recorded 13 strikeouts while walking only two and joined Gibbs in going yard to pace the Indians who got to Spartan pitcher Elizabeth King for six hits. Quickly getting started, the Indians scored a run in the first on a sacrifice fly to center field by Neiss (1-2, 2RBI) that plated Biesecker (14) who doubled on a line drive to right earlier in the inning to make it 1-0. That score held through four innings until Gibbs (1-4, RBI) cleared the left field fence with one

out in the fifth inning with her solo shot for the 2-0 lead. In the sixth, Neiss homered to center on a 1-2 count with one out to extend the lead to 3-0. A Lydia Miller (1-2) sacrifice then advanced Creek to second, who had walked in the previous at bat, before Livelsberger (1-3, RBI) brought her home on a single to short to make it 4-0. TENNIS The Donegal’s boy’s tennis team got off to a strong start this season by climbing atop of Section Three with two wins last week over Red Lion and Northern Lebanon. Hosting the Lions last Tuesday, the Indians got the upper hand on the visitors with one doubles win and two in singles play to pull off the 3-2 victory. While Aaron Rugh and Tanner Bowers handled business with a 64, 6-3 win, Luke Yunginger and Noah Hoffmaster battled and stretched their match into third set tie breaker. After dropping the first set 6-3, the duo answered with their own 6-3 win but eventually fell 7-6. Nathan McNece’s hard fought 63, 4-6, 6-3 singles win was accompanied by a solid performance by Evan Stehman whose 6-1, 6-3 win was enough to put the Indians over the top. Meanwhile, Austin

Hollinger took his first set 6-2, but then fell 6-1, 6-1 to close out his day. Traveling to Northern Lebanon the following day, Donegal easily handled the Vikings in a 7-0 shutout for their second win of the week with Kyle Bidding and Addison Jones putting away Josiah England and Liam Powell 8-0, while Rugh teamed with Austin Bailey to defeat John Moore and Tyler Boltz 8-4, and Hollinger and McNece defeated Dominic Gattone and Bhavya Patel 8-1 to sweep in doubles. In singles, Bowers won 6-0, 6-0 over Boltz while McNece defeated Patel 6-1, 6-0, Stehman put away Moore 6-1, 6-0, and Hollinger closed out Gattone in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. TRACK Donegal’s season opened last Tuesday with a longer than usual road trip as the Indians traveled to Octorara for their first dual meet with the Braves. Both squads came away with wins as the boys earned an 85-63 victory and the girls came away with a 79-62 win. While Octorara took all three of the relays in the boy’s competition, Donegal swept the jumps while splitting with the Braves in the running events and going 1-2 in the

BASEBALL In their only game played last week, the Indians got five strong innings out of starting pitcher Noah Karichner as they took out the Garden Spot Spartans 7-3 on Thursday in Mount Joy. Karichner surrendered two runs on two hits with four strikeouts before Will Small took over in relief, throwing two innings in which he gave up one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Donegal scored first in their half of the opening frame after Drew Bechtold (1-4) doubled to left field followed by a Kyle Burger (2-3) walk which put runners on first and second, setting up Matt Wallace’s sacrifice bunt which advanced both runners into scoring position. Small’s line drive into center then sent both runners home for a 2-0 lead. A wild pitch by Garden Spot hurler Wallace and an RBI double into left field by Zach Leid (2-3, 2RBI) in the bottom of the inning put the Indians back in the driver seat with a 4-2 lead that Donegal extended in the fifth when Leid singled into left scoring Colin Ekinger and then was brought home on a double by Xavier Cannon (1-3, RBI). An RBI single in the sixth by Small (2-3, 3RBI) made it 7-2 before Garden Spot added another run in the top of the seventh with one out but left a runner stranded at third to end the game.

Aaron’s Acres is searching for a year-round facility to accommodate its growing programs. A nonprofit organization in central Pennsylvania, Aaron’s Acres provides individuals with developmental disabilities ages 5 through 21 year-round, therapeutically based, age-appropriate recreational programs focused on enhancing socialization and communication skills. The search comes after the announcement of the Manheim Community Pool’s potential 2020 close. Aaron’s Acres has based its programs at the pool for the past five years, and pools have been a staple of Aaron’s Acres’ programs since the organization’s start in 1998. The programs focus on including all participants in every activity regardless of ability level, meaning the organization has special

requirements for a future facility. In addition, Aaron’s Acres hopes to consolidate its current facilities, including administrative offices and storage units, which are scattered across Lancaster County. The nonprofit is open to either developing a new building or repurposing an existing site. During Aaron’s Acres’ 20th anniversary gala in December 2018, the organization unveiled conceptual designs for its future facility, but the group remains open to discussion. The project is estimated to cost between $4 million and $5 million. Aaron’s Acres is seeking the public’s help in its search for a new location. To help, readers may call Aaron’s Acres’ Lancaster office at 717-917-6101. More information can be found at www.aaronsacres.org.

Prince St., Lancaster. The performance, in its eighth year, will highlight the talent and diversity of Lancaster County and will feature selections from classical ballet and from Eastern European, Indian, Middle Eastern, Filipino, and West African dance. Coordinated by Valerie Henry and committee members Marylin Beittel, Lynn Brooks, and Cynthia Burkhart, this community dance event aims to foster goodwill among diverse dancers, groups, and schools. Henry, who has performed and choreographed around the world, started dancing and teaching in the area in 2005. Looking for a way to connect with the larger dance community, she started “Celebrate Ballet and World Dance” at the behest of Harvey Owens. This year’s concert is dedicated to the memory of Pat Kautter, who passed away in August 2018. Kautter founded Hempfield’s Dance Theatre program, directing
