Chamber will award scholarships
BY CATHY MOLITORISEach year, the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce awards $4,500 to local students. Three scholarship opportunities are now open for Mount Joy students, students of Chamber members or members who are continuing their education. Chamber members and their students may live outside of Mount Joy.
Two of the scholarships are for $1,000 - one for a graduating high school student and one for a continuing education student. Additionally, the Chamber will award a $500 scholarship in memory of Dorothy Metzler and her support of nonprofits in the Mount Joy community.
BY FRANCINE FULTONCommunity members are invited to discover or rediscover many of the events, museums, attractions and getaways that Pennsylvania has to offer at the fifth annual PA Family Travel Fair, to be held on Saturday, April 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Calvary Church in Lancaster. The event, hosted by Where & When Pennsylvania, will also feature children’s activities, entertainment and food.
Those who visit the travel fair will also have opportunities to win prizes, including vacation packages. “The first 500 (attendees) will get a goodie bag to collect all of their swag from all of the vendors,” said Rachel Stebbins, marketing director at Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., one of the
event organizers. “There is a lot of opportunity throughout the event to register for prizes. Almost all of the vendors are bringing prizes to give away.” The grand prize will be a family getaway provided by the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau.
The event focuses on providing information about family-friendly activities that are available throughout the entire state, including locally in Lancaster County and as far away as the northern tier of Pennsylvania.
“When you are talking to vendors, they are not trying to sell you things. They are just providing information,” Stebbins emphasized. “The visitor’s bureaus will represent a lot of the (sites) in their areas, but we also have (representatives of) specific attractions that are coming to talk specifically about their places.”
Entertainment will include a magic show at noon by Papa Tater Magical Family Entertainment and a live show at 2 p.m. by Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland. Echo the Bat from Lincoln Caverns and Chipper from Herr Foods Inc. will greet visitors, and the Kids Cookie Break radio show will be on-site doing live interviews. Visitors will also be able to meet friendly service dogs from Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS).
Food trucks will be available offering breakfast and lunch, as well as snacks and ice cream. New this year will be Joe on the GO Coffee Co., which will offer coffee, tea and breakfast selections.
Stebbins hopes that people will attend the event to learn about local attractions they may not even
be aware of. “It’s nice to have options with what you can do without having to travel really far,” she stated. “You can have a nice, long weekend or you can go out and do some of these activities and be home at night because it’s just that close. People often don’t realize what is right around them.”
Calvary Church is located at 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Admission to and parking at the PA Family Travel Fair are free. The event will be held rain or shine. “We ask that each applicant submit an essay, no more than 200 words, that describes your life experiences that have helped shape your goals and career path,” explained Galen Dise, scholarships chair. “This essay is a significant portion of the decision-making process.” Candidates also must submit two letters of recommendation and copies of high school or college transcripts.
For the Dorothy Metzler scholarship, there is a focus on the student’s volunteer time in the community, and the scholarship is open to anyone of any age who is attending college. “Dorothy ‘Dottie’ Metzler was an individual Chamber member who loved giving support to her community,” said Kerry Meyers, Chamber executive assistant.

Conestoga Herb Guild slates spring programs
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDFor many in Lancaster County, gardening is an integral part of daily life. Every grower relies on certain tips and methods, from amateur gardeners to seasoned horticulturists who tend to plants for fun or rely on the soil for meals. The Conestoga Herb Guild provides a space for those with green thumbs to share tips with each other, trade supplies and hone their skills together.
“So many of our members grow their own herbs and cook with them. The guild focuses on utilizing and growing herbs in
everyday life, as well as the health benefits that herbs provide for people,” said Mary Ann Steinhauer of the Conestoga Herb Guild.
The Conestoga Herb Guild hosts its programs and meetings at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. Although certain meetings are limited to members of the guild, several meetings are open to the public for a nominal fee. Each meeting revolves around a specific topic or activity, and many meetings feature a guest
speaker. At the guild’s meeting on March 8, Steinhauer shared hacks that she has found to be effective for peeling, preserving and drying ginger root. Members often bring their own potted herbs to meetings so that others can take a piece to plant in their own gardens.
The guild will host its next meeting on April 12. The topic for the meeting is “Creating Year-Round Interest With Native Plants,” and the gathering will feature a presentation from guest speaker Adam Barkafski. Barkafski, a Master Gardener from Penn State, will discuss topics such as the importance of sustaining native herbs and how to select plants to extend the duration of time that a garden remains in bloom.
On May 10, the Conestoga Herb Guild will host its annual
plant and seed exchange. During the program, members will bring a variety of harvested plants and herbs from their gardens to trade with others. For this program, members will be considered the guest speakers and will share their favorite gardening techniques and advice pertaining to gardening safety and time efficiency. “Certain members are very experienced with specific herbs and have acquired little bits of knowledge from years of experience,” Steinhauer said. “Our main goal is to educate people on herbs you can grow or buy locally and using them in a way that it becomes part of their lives.”
For more information about the Conestoga Herb Guild, including how to become a member, contact Steinhauer at flygirl1947@outlook.com.
Akilan Murugesan and Landon Keller led things off with a win. The rest of their teammates followed.
Their win and the team’s vic-
Donegal tennis sits at 3-2 overall
tory was a 7-0 triumph - that of the Donegal boys’ tennis team playing a match at Elizabethtown on Friday, March 24.
Keller and Murugesan, both seniors, paired up for an 8-1 victory over Luke Risser and
Emery Morgan of E-town at the first doubles match.
At number two doubles, Noah Rohrer and Alex Monchik formed a winning Donegal duo as they posted an 8-1 win. James Turbedsky, who was Rohrer’s basketball teammate during the winter, teamed up with Bo Moose for an 8-3 win at number three doubles.
In singles play, Murugesan held on for a 6-4 win at the first set against Risser before making it a straight sets win on a 6-2 second set victory. Keller (6-0, 6-1) also won in straight sets. Moose eked by Finn Grinnell 7-6, 6-0 and Rohrer took the fourth singles 6-1, 6-3.
Donegal improved to 3-1 with that win but lost 7-0 to Lancaster Country Day on Wednesday, March 29. The loss dropped the Indians record in the LancasterLebanon League to 1-1. Rohrer and Monchik gave a great effort at number one doubles, falling short 8-4. The number three doubles with Moose and Turbedsky was an even closer finish at 8-6.
The Cougars took the four singles matches in straight sets.
SOFTBALL
The softball team opened the week of March 27 with a trip to Pennsboro for a nonleague game with the Panthers. Donegal drew first blood, scoring in the top of the first. Upon relinquishing the lead in the fourth frame, the Indians regained the lead only to have Pennsboro even the score in the home half of the fifth.
The see-saw game ended with Pennsboro putting up three in the sixth inning for a 5-2 win.
With a single and a double, Cara Biesecker drove in one of the Indians runs and scored the other.
Biesecker also started and went the distance, striking out four batters and giving up 10 base hits.
Natalie Colwell, who also had a run batted in, and Esther Myers, who scored the other Donegal run, both went 2-for-3 on the day. The Indians collected seven hits.
BASEBALL
The Elizabethtown Bears
clawed out a victory in a close Lancaster-Lebanon League baseball game at home, defeating Donegal 3-2 on Wednesday, March 29. Tied at 1-1 after two complete innings, Donegal pushed ahead with one run in the seventh on Brock Hammaker’s two out single to left that plated Devin Bailey.
The Bears, however, took advantage of three walks and a game-winning single to center that pushed across two runs
Hammaker and Bailey both collected two hits and one RBI in the loss..
The loss dropped the Indi-
ans’ record to 1-1 on the year.
“I think we will have a strong Section Three this year from top to bottom,” Jeff Hartman, the Indians’ head coach, stated. “Manheim Central will be the team to beat again.”
Hartman would be looking at key returning seniors Alex Eisenberger, Caden Evans, Landon Baughman, Landon Robertson and Jaden Fabian to help lead the team.
“Fabian was a first team allstar,” Hartman pointed out. “He was all-section pitcher and is a projected top of the rotation starter.
“Evans is projected at num-
ber two, but is pushing toward the top,” Hartman said of the Widener University commit.
The previous week Donegal had a solid 10-0 win at West York, posting the non-league shutout on Wednesday, March 22.
Fabian picked up the win on the hill with five strikeouts over five innings. Ryan Shepard fanned two in the sixth.
The Indians pounded out 10 hits and took advantage of four walks and four errors. They led 2-0 after three complete but broke the game open with eight runs over the final three innings.

Engagement with the Clover Award Program is generally a multiyear process and consists of planning and implementing a service-learning project in the community.
Representing Lancaster County was Caleb Miller of
Marietta. Miller is the first 4H member in Lancaster County to achieve the high honor of earning the Diamond Clover Award. For his project, Miller installed livestock gates on the cattle barn at the Elizabethtown Fair to protect the safety of the cattle and bystanders. In order to complete this project, Miller gathered nearly $4,000 in donations from local businesses, drew plans, presented his vision, installed the gates and
hosted a ribbon cutting to present the gift of cattle gates to the Elizabethtown Fair.

HDC MidAtlantic to develop a portion of the former UPMC/St. Joseph Hospital site on College Avenue. The hospital site is directly across the street from Milagro House’s current location on the corner of West Chestnut Street and College Avenue. This offered Milagro House the opportunity to remain in its current location while allowing for expansion at the former hospital site.
