“It’sso important to give kids a taste of the outdoors,” said Scot Harlacher, a member of the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA). That’s the goal of the organization’s annual Kids Fishing Derby.
The event will be held on Saturday, April 15, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the reflecting pond on the grounds of Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy. The derby is open to all youths age 11 and under as well as all handicapped anglers who possess a current Pennsylvania fishing license.
“This is a really fun event,” Harlacher noted. “We have kids who this is like Christmas morning for them. It’s that same level of excitement.”
He also noted that the event is a multigenerational experience. “We have parents who went to this as kids and now they’re bringing their own kids,” he stated, noting that the event has been held at the church since the late 1990s.
The DFCA will stock the pond with more than 300 brook, rainbow, golden and brown trout. Participants will have the opportunity to catch up to five fish per person to take home. All fishermen must bring their own equipment and clean their own fish. DFCA members will be on hand until 11:30 a.m. to help fishermen, but all fishing will stop at 11 a.m.
The church will host a pancake breakfast during the event, and the meal will be open to the general public. It will be served from 7 to 11 a.m. in the church fellowship
hall and will feature a menu of pancakes, sausage and juice, with coffee available for a separate charge. Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit the church’s annual mission trip to upstate New York. “This is one of our main fundraisers for that trip,” said Harlacher, who is a member of the church. “We’ve been going on this trip for more than 20 years to perform home rehabilitation projects.”
He noted that the fishing derby will be held rain or shine, and he encourages participants to come out no matter the weather. “Come early, bring your own equipment and come prepared to have fun,” he said. “Even if the weather is a little unfavorable, you can come in and warm up in the church, have breakfast and head back out to fish some more.”
All participants must register with the DFCA on the day of the derby. Parking will be permitted only in the Donegal Presbyterian Church parking area, with no street parking.
The DFCA is a local nonprofit organization focused on restoring the Donegal watershed to its original state. On Tuesday, April 18, the organization will dedicate a bridge at 617 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, to Ken Depoe, the DFCA’s founder. Depoe started the organization in 1965, said Brandon Crouser, president of the organization. State Sen. Ryan Aument will be present at the dedication ceremony, which will take place at 11 a.m.
For more information about the DFCA or to help with the derby, contact Crouser at 717-538-4370.

W hen New York Times bestselling author Maria V. Snyder visits the Milanof-Schock Library this month, she’ll give readers a taste of her books - literally. Presenting the program “Ideas, Influences and Poisons,” the author of “Poison Study” will not only talk about her books and her writing process, but she will also offer participants a “poison” tasting, said Kim Beach, operations coordinator for the library.
You’ll have to attend for yourself to see just what that poison is, but Beach said she expects a fun and entertaining event at the library, located at 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. Snyder’s talk will take place on Monday, April 17, from 6 to 8 p.m.
“This is a great opportunity for budding authors to learn more about the writing process,” Beach noted. “It will be another fun evening at the library.”
Snyder, a meteorologist turned novelist, is the author of multiple novels and short stories. Her Study Series, about a young woman who becomes a poison taster, includes “Poison Study,” “Magic Study,” “Fire Study,” “Shadow Study,” “Night Study” and “Dawn Study.” She has also written the Glass Series - “Storm Glass,” “Sea Glass” and “Spy Glass” - as well as the Insider books “Inside Out” and “Outside In,” among other titles.

Donegal baseball blanks Eastern York, 8-0
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
The combined efforts of Caden Evans, Brock Hammaker and Zachary Park proved too tough for EasternYork’s baseball team on Friday, March 31 as the Donegal Indians defeated the Golden Knights 8-0.
Hammanker drove in one of the Donegal runs in a five-run second
inning. Coy Allman and Ale Eisenberger also helped drive the offense in the big frame.
The Indians scored seven runs in their Lancaster-Lebanon League game at Elco on Monday, April 3. They edged the Raiders 7-6, improving their record to 3-1. The Raiders fell to 2-1.
The two-run home run by Nolan Book proved to be the difference
maker in Manheim Central’s 3-2 defeat of Donegal on Wednesday afternoon, April 5.
The Barons scored those two runs in the top of the third inning of the L-L League game at Mount Joy. They made it a 3-0 lead before the Indians battled back with a two-spot in the home half of the sixth inning. Central’s Cael Martin came on late in the game to record the save.
TRACK
Coming off a defeat at the hands of the Elco Raiders, the Donegal
boys’ and girls’ track teams dominated their meet against Northern Lebanon. In the Monday afternoon Section Three meet at Donegal, the boys’ team recorded a 99-51 victory over the Vikings while the Donegal girls dominated by a 111-39 margin. Both squads improved to 1-1 on the year.
The Raiders had won by nearly identical scores of 86-64 and 89-61 in the boys’ and girls’ meets respectively back on March 28.
“We have a lot of new student athletes this year and our inexperi-
ence showed in our first meet with Elco,” Philip Koser, the Indians’ head coach, said.
“There were many great individual results,” added the coach. “Caleb Kendig won the shot put with a personal best 46-foot-6. He also won the javelin and was third in the discus.”
Another bright spot came in the girls’ meet with 4x100 relay teammates Faith Garber, Sophia Floyd, Peyton Mansfield, and Anna Brubaker.
“They ran the eighth fastest time in school history,” Koser noted.
The girls’ team captured all three relay events. Sophomore Kathryn Fernald, who also won the 800- and 3,200-meter individual events, was part of the 4x800 relay team that also included Kendall Finicle, Lucia Angeles, and freshman Molly Myers.
The 4x100 relay team included 200-m winner Faith Garber as well as Mansfield, Floyd, and Brubaker, who also anchored the 4x400Myers, Jayanna Morant, and Gleib.
events, junior Nya Bantum took first. Mahagony Hunter had the longest discus toss with Bantum taking second in the event.
Sydney Snyder, Claudia Taylor, and Emily Slobozien finished 1-2-3 in the triple jump. Snyder won the 400 with McKyla Bantum and Morant behind her. Hannah Slobozien took second behind Garber in the long jump while Taylor took third.
SOFTBALL
With Grace Graham’s three hits and five runs batted in, the Donegal softball team topped Manheim Central 13-1 on the road, Wednesday afternoon, April 5. Graham had a triple and two singles.
A trio of Tribe teammates drove in two runs each - Ruth Myers, Emma Garber and Natalie Colwell with Myers stroking a double and scoring two runs. Bella Mackison also scored two runs as did winning pitcher Cara Biesecker.

Batting out of the lead-off spot, Biesecker went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. She pitched five innings with two strikeouts and two walks.
The Indians were coming off a 19-4 thumping of the Elco Raiders the previous day. Garber had five RBI’s in this win, slugging two doubles on a 3-for-3 afternoon.
Esther Myers, who drove in three, also doubled while Mackison blasted a solo home run in addition to drawing two walks and scoring another run.
Colwell went 2-for-3 with two RBI’s.
Biesecker’s pitching effort needed to go for only four innings in the mercy rule game. She recorded one strikeout and allowed four runs on three hits.

Akilan Murugesan and Landon Keller earned the team’s only team point with an 8-5 win at number one doubles. Noah Rohrer and Alex Monchik played at number two doubles. The pair falling just short in an 8-4 match was the same fate as Bo Moose and James Turbedsky at number three doubles.
Murugesan not only teamed up with Keller for an 8-1 victory over their Annville rivals at number one doubles, Murugesan also won 6-2, 6-2 at first singles. Keller bounced back from a 6-4 loss to win 6-3 102 and claimed the number two singles for Donegal.
Rohrer, who won the number four singles 6-0, 3-6, 10-2, was Monchik’s teammate in an 8-5 doubles win. Moose and Turbedsky also won 8-5.

Getting a hands-on introduction to construction
By Cathy Molitoris
For three days in March, more than 200 middle school students got a firsthand look at careers in the construction industry at ABC Keystone’s Construction Wars. The students had the opportunity for hands-on work with industry professionals in the
carpentry, masonry, sheet metal fabrication, electrical, plumbing and HVAC trades.
Represented schools in Lancaster and York counties included Garden Spot Middle School in Eastern Lancaster County School District; Gerald G. Huesken Middle School in Conestoga Valley
School District; Manor Middle School in the Penn Manor School District; Warwick Middle School; Eastern York Middle School; Elizabethtown Area Middle School; Donegal Junior High School; The Janus School in Mount Joy; and La Academia Partnership Charter School. Construction Wars was held at ABC Keystone’s headquarters, 135 Shellyland Road, Manheim.
“We offer this event to provide middle school students with exposure and awareness of our industry and hopefully spark their interest as they are making decisions moving into high school,” shared Stephanie R. Larkin, vice president of education, safety and workforce development for ABC Keystone. Larkin explained that students created a variety of take-home projects during
the event, including a sheet metal toolbox and a wooden bench. Additionally, they wired lightbulbs and created a circuit, laid brick, were introduced to basic safety and CPR and learned about refrigeration.
Now is the time for students to consider careers in construction, Larkin said, noting that the demand for trade skills grows annually. Average wages for some
trades are $70,000 per year, and apprentices participate in earn-while-you-learn programs, allowing them to access educational opportunities while working, with the potential to graduate debt free. She also emphasized that the industry provides multiple education and career pathways, ranging from apprenticeship to journey-level worker to business owner.
ABC Keystone has held the
event for more than five years, and Larkin remarked that it requires support from the community to pull it off.
“The event is only possible because we have 30 to 35 volunteers each day and very generous member sponsors who provide hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, T-shirts, construction materials and lunches, along with items for goodie bags,” she said.

Historical society sets meeting
The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will host Jean Ellis as the guest speaker at its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 17, at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy. Refreshments will follow the program. The meeting is free and open to the public.
The topic of the presentation will be “Seven Degrees of Separation: The Lancaster County Roots of Celebrity.” Ellis will share about a genealogical research project that unearthed an unexpected connection between Lancaster County and an international celebrity, who will remain unknown until revealed at the program. The presentation is designed to be educational and entertaining.
Ellis lives in Mount Joy, is past president of the Mount Joy Area Historical Society and has written and edited five historical journals for the society. A graduate of Millersville University, she is currently editing the organization’s next publication, “Gone, But Not Forgotten: A Compilation of Mount Joy’s Lost Buildings.”
The society building is open every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Visitors are welcome to stop by to conduct research and see the many displays of Mount Joy memorabilia. For more information, visit www.mountjoy history.com.

Seven locations to
At the library program, Snyder will talk about how she gathers ideas from a variety of sources and turns them into novels. Additionally, she will teach participants how to be a professional food taster using the knowledge she gained from researching “Poison Study.” She will also discuss her newest novel, “The Study of Poisons,” which will be released on Saturday, April 15. A stickler for research, Snyder takes a deep dive into her subject matter, learning how to ride a horse, how to pick a lock, how to fence and how to work with molten glass among other skills to give her novels a realistic feel.
The evening at the library will feature a question-and-answer session, and books will be available for sale. Participants are also welcome to bring their books from home to be signed by the author.
Beach noted that she had not read Snyder’s work before Kirstin Rhoads, community relations coordinator for the library, suggested bringing the author in, but she’s now a fan. “I was hooked from the first book I read, ‘Poison Study,’” she remarked. “We all need to branch out and try new things sometimes.”
Registration is required for the program. To register, call the library at 717-653-1510 or sign up on the calendar page at www.mslibrary.org.
