Creating Art “En Plein Air” or the next few weeks, don’t be surprised to see artists painting at spots all throughout Marietta, Columbia and Wrightsville. They are part of the first River Towns Plein Air event. The event will feature artists painting “en plein air,” or outdoors, through Wednesday, April 21. The public is invited to watch the painting, and the final products will be displayed at an art show and competition at Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., on Friday, April 23, through Sunday, April 25. The show will run on Friday from 5 to 9 p.m.; on Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. River Towns Plein Air is a project of Marietta Art Alive! (MAA), a group that promotes the enjoyment, creation and awareness of visual arts and has partnered with Rivertownes PA USA for this event. “Plein air is becoming a really big
Covering Veterans With Kindness BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“You are not forgotten.” That’s the message behind Blankets of Honor, an organization that works to recognize veterans and their supporters. Blankets of Honor began as a subcommittee of the Marietta Legion Riders Post 466 about a year ago, said David Chobanoff, chief marketing officer. “We give a blanket to a veteran, a Gold Star parent or a vet supporter, and we do a presentation,” he explained. “We hand them a blanket depicting the branch they (or their loved one) served in.” See Veterans pg 9
drawing session from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on April 24 outside across the street from the exhibit space. The rain date for the class will be April 25. Hines said painting en plein air provides artists with a unique way to create their works. “It’s a challenging way to paint,” she explained. “Factors like the weather and wind can make it challenging. The shadows change, too, so what you’re painting may look one way and then an hour later, it looks very different.” For more information on River Towns Plein Air, visit the aforementioned website or www.facebook.com/ MariettaArtAlive, where updates on artist locations will be posted daily during the event.
Marietta Art Alive! member Marianne Calenda creates art en plein air, or outdoors. Marietta Art Alive! will hold an en plein air event throughout the month of April, culminating in an exhibit at Marietta Community House.
New Director Takes The Reins At Milanof-Schock Library
Joseph McIlhenney became executive director of the Milanof-Schock Library on March 15.
Joseph McIlhenney, the new executive director of the MilanofSchock Library, feels right at home in the library. He practically grew up in one. “My mom worked at a hometown library, and I didn’t go home after school,” he recalled. “Instead, I went to the library. I spent a lot of time in the stacks and at the tables.” He spent most of his career in academic libraries but was eager to get back to the hometown atmosphere of a public library, so when the opportunity arose in Mount Joy, he took it.
INSIDE THIS ISSUE
“When I was thinking about librarianship as a career, that was my ideal - being a librarian in a hometown library,” he explained. “The winds of my career took me other places, but this was an opportunity to get back to a library that was very much like the one I grew up in.” McIlhenney, who is originally from New Jersey, most recently worked as the library director for the Lancaster campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. He said he’s excited about his new position, but he knows there will be challenges.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to witness and participate in a oneof-a-kind living history event,” said Roberta A. Freeman, public events coordinator for Stone Gables Estate. Friday’s activities will include a VIP experience, featuring a Civil War encampment, demonstrations, and exhibits by re-enactors and historians, as well as a narrated train ride on the Harrisburg, Lincoln and Lancaster Railroad. “Visitors who purchase train ride tickets will have an opportunity to walk through the world’s only fullscale replica of President Lincoln’s funeral car,” Freeman noted. Additional activities include a reception and dinner, featuring some of Lincoln’s favorite foods, as well as a presentation of the Gettysburg Address delivered by Abraham Lincoln portrayer Fritz Klein from the original lectern Lincoln used in November of 1863. Visitors will also see the unveiling of a Titanic model. “Two tragic events occurred on April 14, 47 years apart: President Lincoln’s assassination in 1865 and the sinking of the Titanic in 1912,” Freeman said.
The Lincoln Funeral Train Commemoration will take place at Stone Gables Estate on Friday, April 23, and Saturday, April 24.

5K from pg 4 piece of this is you have the option to honor or dedicate your race to a mother figure - any woman you respect - and we will write a Mother’s Day card and send it out on your behalf,” she explained. “It’s a nice Mother’s Day gift to your mom or any influential woman in your life.” Sahd said although this is the first time Brittany’s Hope is doing a 5K this way, she has set lofty goals. “We would be absolutely thrilled to get over 400 participants to accept the challenge, establish 40 teams and together raise $30,000 for Brittany’s Hope,” she stated. “In chal-
lenging times like these, the work of high-impact charities like ours is critically needed. We are their only lifeline.” She added that 100% of the funds raised go directly to caring for vulnerable and orphaned children. This year’s race has a special significance for Sahd. Her 5-year-old son, Peter, will be participating. “He told me, ‘I want to race to help boys and girls who need mommies, daddies and toys,’” Sahd said, adding that Peter even picked out a unique team name - Team Dinomite - to reflect his love of dinosaurs. While Peter will be racing in honor of his grandmother, Sahd encourages anyone with a desire to give back and also honor women to participate in the event. “We can’t all get together as a community like we have in the past, but we can still bring people together in a different way, united for one cause,” she stated. Race Your Way For The YWCA BY CATHY MOLITORIS
YWCA Lancaster will host its annual Race Against Racism with an interactive/educational twist, as this year’s event will offer a history lesson along with the race. The Race Your Way Race Against Racism will run from Saturday, April 24, through Saturday, May 22. “This is an opportunity to use our 5K course through Lancaster with an opportunity to learn about various historic sites or make your own race in your neighborhood, on your treadmill or any other way that works for you,” explained Stacie Blake, CEO of YWCA Lancaster. This is the 23rd consecutive year for the race, making it the longest-running Race Against Racism in the country, she noted. As always, the race is a fundraiser for the YWCA’s programs. This year’s race supports the new Center for Racial and Gender Equity. “This is a division of YWCA that focuses on education, advocacy and community engagement in our quest to create an equitable community for all residents,” Blake stated.

Brown’s work at the plate also kicked off a fourth inning surge with a single. Alex Eisenberger followed with a RBI double, and Colin Eckinger singled to send another run home, giving Donegal a 4-1 lead after four. A series of walks in the fifth set the stage for the seven-run Donegal blitz, featuring a two RBI double from Eckinger and singles from Landen Baughman and Eichelberger. Eckinger finished the day with three RBIs and two hits, and Brown collected both a pair of hits and pair of RBIs. On Monday, April 5th, the Tribe came up just one run short in a 3-2 loss at Exeter Township. Donegal pitcher Jaden Fabian took the loss, striking out four batters over the course of four and a third innings. Exeter gained the early momentum with a two-run homer in the first inning and scored their third run in the second. Donegal rallied with an answer in the fifth, plating their two runs after hits from Brown and Eckinger. With two outs against them, Brown scored on a passed ball and Eckinger was brought in by a hit from Xavier Cannon. Unfortunately for the Tribe, Exeter was able to close out the inning before the Indians were able to score the equalizer. Baughman provided the Indians fourth hit of the evening. “We are young and inexperienced, but I love the way the kids are working and getting better each day,” pointed out head coach

to nominate a veteran or someone to receive a blanket,” he stated, adding that World War II vets and anyone who has deteriorating health is moved to the top of the list. “Anyone is eligible to receive a blanket as long as they served or are connected to someone who served. It doesn’t matter if they served in combat, in peace, overseas or on U.S. soil the whole time. They are a veteran to us, and they deserve our recognition.” Blanket presentations are open to the public, and Chobanoff added that participants are moved by the ceremony. “It’s very emotional,” he stated. “Sometimes, we try to surprise the vet with help from a family member, but even if the vet knows we’re doing this, it’s very moving and special.” Currently, Blankets of Honor has made presentations in Lancaster, York, Lebanon and Chester counties, but Chobanoff said the organization has lofty goals. “We’d love to have every veteran in the nation covered in a blanket,” he stated. “It’s a huge goal to set, but we’re trying to get there one county at a time.” For more information on Blankets of Honor, readers may visit www.blanketsofhonor.org.

The blankets not only represent comfort and warmth to the recipient, but also have a deeper meaning, he stated. “The threads of a blanket are intertwined, and that represents how we are holding the person up. We are supporting them,” he said. “We want to do everything we can do for the people who need us. Once they receive a blanket from us, they become part of our family.” Blankets of Honor began as a Facebook group, and the response has been overwhelming, Chobanoff said. “We now have over 1,200 people in the group,” he remarked. “We have given out more than 50 blankets. … The whole project has been very well received.” As a nonprofit organization, Blankets of Honor relies on donations from the community as well as proceeds from the sale of apparel and accessories at https://blanketsof-honor.creator-spring.com. “We are always looking for donations,” Chobanoff said, noting that the blankets are costly since they are quality, queen-size blankets. The group also gives out challenge coins at presentations and often includes decals or other items depending on the recipient. “We are also looking for people

Joanna Spicer believes art can bring people together. “Community outreach and work is important to me,” said the textile artist. “Art is a therapeutic, friendly and fun way for me to connect with others.” Spicer will showcase her work in an exhibit titled “A Spice of Life” in the cottage at Mount Bethel Cemetery, 700 Locust St., Columbia. The exhibit will be held on Friday, April 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Sunday, April 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. Spicer’s exhibit will be a fundraiser for the cemetery, which relies on funding for a variety of reasons. “Nonprofit organizations such as the Mount Bethel Cemetery had to cancel all fundraising events (this past year) due to the pandemic,” said Claire Storm, a member of the cemetery board of directors. “Although most of the work to keep the cemetery in pristine condition is performed by volunteers, there are other expenses that are supported by fundraisers.” Money from the event will be raised by the sale of Spicer’s artwork as well as by donations and will be used for
groundskeeping and landscaping, among other projects. Spicer, who teaches art at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School in Columbia, has helped the cemetery committee with numerous fundraisers over the years, although this will be her first time exhibiting her own work at the cottage. “I’ll be showcasing a variety of weavings and fabric pieces and possibly some prints,” she said. In addition to working with the cemetery committee, Spicer has organized other art events for local individuals and organizations, and she works with the Lancaster Office of Aging and Lancaster Creative Factory as an online art instructor for senior classes. She also completed two murals in Columbia - one at Coffee and Cream café and one at Locust Street Park. Spicer said supporting the Mount Bethel Cemetery is important because the site has historic significance in the community. According to the nonprofit’s website, the cemetery dates to the 1720s and is the oldest burial ground in continuous use in the Columbia area. “Not only is the show a great
