New Takes On Education By Leah Sintic
You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who hasn’t felt the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and one of the areas experiencing a massive adjustment is the education system. Public school, private school, student, teacher, parent - no one is exempt from the far-reaching repercussions after a statewide mandate closed schools in mid-March. School administrative teams across Lancaster County have had to adjust quickly, all while keeping the safety of students and the community at the forefront of their decisions. School districts countywide have ramped up their online communication portals, offering educational resources, food assistance information, answers to frequently asked questions, and critical updates. While
the game plan moving forward varies by educational institution, concern for the welfare of students presides across the board. For Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS), a private institution in Elizabethtown, a brick-and-mortar shutdown has caused education to morph into a completely different format. However, it hasn’t changed the school’s mission to “Pursue Christ and Prepare Students,” which the administration and faculty are committed to fulfilling. Guided by an administrative team, the MCCS faculty members have spent countless hours transitioning their traditional classroom format into an online delivery. The new initiative rolled out effective March 23, allowing the entire student body to continue coursework online. “ We feel it is important to
challenge our students to keep moving academically,” explained MCCS superintendent Dr. Daniel Sheard. “We look at this as a new way to build student-teacher relationships.” Though the plan of action would be re-evaluated in the event the school closure mandate is lifted, MCCS faculty members are prepared to complete the duration of the year via the new remote delivery if necessary. Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS) also went live with its online format on March 23, providing assigned coursework for students in kindergarten through 12th grade in five core courses along with optional enrichment activities. The LCCS executive team shared its intent in a press release, stating, “LCCS is committed to providing a high-quality academic experience Schools around the county have adjusted their educational methods as part of the even during this time of crisis.” The response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and many students, such as those from See Education pg 5 Mount Calvary Christian School, are doing their learning from home.

Dr. Clair Dale Treese, tournament director, is hopeful that social distancing restrictions will be eased in time for the tournament. “The consensus right now is that sometime after April 30 the restrictions will be lifted, so we are planning this as a stillgo,” he stated. “We are hoping to be able to hold the event. It’s an all-day event, so it would be hard to reschedule.” Treese explained that the Pinnacle Cup is a match play tournament, which is a nontraditional format for a charity golf tournament. The golf event is composed of teams of two players in a match play competition utilizing a scramble method of play. Rather than counting strokes, each hole that is played is either won or lost. “Every hole is important,” Treese stated. “Golfers like the challenge of this format.” This year, for the first time, there will be two divisions offered at the golf outing - a tournament division and a senior division. “The tournament division is for (golfers) age 59 and younger. The tournament division will play three matches of nine holes - 27 overall,” explained Treese. “The senior division for (golfers) age 60 and over will play two matches of nine holes each.” Teams are paired based on their combined handicaps and indexed according to the United States Golf Association (USGA) rating of the course. The tournament is limited to 64 teams. “I’ve had teams from Florida and Texas,” Treese noted. “We’ve had 15- to 82-year-olds playing.” On the day of the event, team registration will open at 7:30 a.m. Matches will begin at 8:15 a.m., and lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. The championship rounds will start after lunch. Qualifying teams from the tournament division and senior division will be seeded and play in
championship match play rounds, where each team will play a best-of-three holes match. The final two teams will play a best-of-three holes match to determine the overall tournament champions. “At 3 p.m., desserts will be served, and the group prizes (for optional contests) will be announced,” Treese added. “At 3:30 p.m., the champion match will begin.” The presentation of the trophy and prizes for the champions, along with the second- and third-place teams, will take place at approximately 5 p.m. Team registration and sponsor forms are available by contacting Treese at 717-367-9144 or cdtreese@centurylink.net. The team entry, which must be postmarked by Friday, May 29, will include access to a practice range, the use of a cart, prizes and the luncheon. There is an early registration discount for teams whose forms are postmarked before Friday, May 8. Proceeds will help Camp Ladybug offer its summer program to those with mental and/or physical challenges at no cost to the participants. GEARS conducts Camp Ladybug in conjunction with the Elizabethtown Area Services for Special Needs. This year’s camp will be held at the Elizabethtown Park Pavilion 5 from 9 a.m. to noon on weekdays beginning on Monday, June 15. The tournament is supported by the Pinnacle Foundation, a nonprofit corporation that provides assistance and support to special needs and critically ill adults and children. Treese noted that golfers will enjoy the Royal Manchester Golf Links. “It is a relatively new course - only 12 years old,” he stated. “However, it is ranked in the top five in Pennsylvania and it’s in the top 50 public courses in the country.”

Race Against Racism from pg 1 water bottle. The Kids’ Fun Run, for children age 12 and under, will also be held. Youngsters are asked to participate in a virtual 100-yard dash to earn a bandanna and ribbon. Adults and children who wish to participate are asked to register at https://ywcalancaster.org/race againstracism/ and download a virtual race bib. Those who had already registered for the race will be automatically transitioned to the virtual race. There is a discount for those age 14 and under who run, and the fee for the Kids’ Fun Run is nominal. The race encourages team participation, and there is a special link at the site for virtual race registration for team captains. The site suggests those wishing to form teams invite employees, friends, and family. Awards will be given out to the largest teams representing a number of categories, including place of worship and large and small businesses. Normally, the race, which traditionally begins in Musser Park, includes the annual Humanity Fest, a multicultural festival designed to celebrate the diversity of the local community. Since Humanity Fest cannot be held this year, organizers hope that virtual racers will encourage each other by posting photos and videos experiences on social
media. They may search for “Race Against Racism” on Facebook and @RARLancaster on Instagram. People should utilize the hashtags #RARLancaster and #VirtualRace. “We can’t wait to see your creative videos and photos of how you are running your race,” said Blake. The YWCA is planning to hold a community celebration on a date that has not been determined. Participants in the virtual race will be able to pick up their race swag at that event. Funds raised by the event are used to address racism issues, through efforts such as the YWCA Lancaster’s Social Justice and Advocacy programs, as well as supporting those who seek peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. Blake said that she is grateful to the Lancaster community for rallying around the event. “We thank our generous sponsors and supporters for standing with us during this unprecedented time,” she noted. The Lancaster YWCA has been a fixture in Lancaster since 1889. The organization provides services to help empower women, and it is also dedicated to eliminating racism and promoting peace, justice, and freedom. More information about the organization and its mission may be found at https://ywca lancaster.org.

The Giant Company recently announced several updates as part of its efforts to continue meeting the needs of its customers and communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, including modified hours intended to help care for older members of the community. In order to allow more time for team members to sanitize, unload deliveries, stock shelves, and better serve customers throughout the day, all store hours were adjusted to 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. beginning on March 19 until further notice. Effective March 19, all Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are open from 6 to 7 a.m. to customers who are age 60 and older only. This age group is especially vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus, according to the CDC. The schedule change will allow customers in this age category to shop in a less crowded

statement went on to explain, “The school day is set up to be asynchronistic so that students can learn and study at their own pace in a schedule that meets the needs of their families.” The school utilizes an online hub called Community Corner to provide a central location for communication and interaction. Hempfield School District also geared up to deliver online learning, with March 30 as its launch date. By implementing programs that were already in place within its system, the district hoped to expedite the process while expanding its format to incorporate a broader range of online options. “At Hempfield we have an application called Schoology, which allows teachers to post updates, assignments, discussions, videos, assessments, and more,” explained secondary teacher Ryan Martin, noting that the district planned to transition to using the application virtually. “I believe strongly in the power of relationships in the school setting. I’m hopeful we will also be able to use a video conferencing program so that I can interact with my students in a live setting.” Conestoga Valley (CV) schools also enacted measures to move

Addressing parents and students via the school’s website, CV superintendent Dr. David Zuilkoski stated, “I’ve always believed that a successful educational experience must include the schools, the family, and the community. I can say without question that CV should be proud of the way that all three parts have come together in this
time of crisis.” “Neither our teachers nor our students signed up for this type of learning, so we will maintain our growth mindset and appreciate a ‘yet’ mentality,” Zuilkoski continued. “Throughout this process, all teachers will be providing feedback to ensure a more personalized learning (experience) occurs.” In a show of solidarity, many communities have banded together to partner with schools and churches to provide pickup locations for bagged lunches for students. Local libraries have kickstarted operations that include sanitizing methods and drive-through services for books and resources. Countless organizations with online platforms are also stepping up to do their part, providing tutorials, virtual museum and zoo tours, and other educational resources free of charge. For parents, this new time of social distancing outside the home creates a uniquely opposite effect inside the home, as they must mesh the logistics of multiple adults working from home, siblings having extensive time to interact only with each other, and numerous demands for inhome technology. Three of Bethany Eaby’s four children attend school in the Manheim Township School District. With the closure of schools
in March, suddenly her fifthgrade, third-grade, and kindergarten students joined her and their youngest sibling at home. Tapping into her elementary education background, Eaby has implemented online learning initiatives and incorporated some of her own teaching strategies to keep her children engaged and productive. “I’m trying to be really creative with activities for the kids to do together and also trying to keep our days scheduled so that they know what to expect,” elaborated Eaby, whose husband had also joined the picture by working from home. “We’ve made newspapers, art projects, and sewing, baking, and science experiments. Manheim Township has sent out resources for parents to engage in, which are not mandatory but extremely helpful,” she added. Another creative outlet for communication has gathered momentum, as students nationwide have taken their artistic skills outside to “Chalk the Walk.” The initiative includes covering sidewalks with uplifting messages and artwork to encourage those who pass by. Citizens have also rallied in an effort to minimize the physical distance and connect generations by organizing art and card collections that comply with sanitation protocols. The finished products are then delivered to senior

Coping Kids & Teens, a program with the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss at Hospice & Community Care, is a local resource to support the needs of children, teenagers, and families impacted by serious illness and loss through individual and group grief support services. As a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and in an effort to ensure everyone’s health and safety, the center is temporarily suspending events and in-person support groups. The Pathways Center is offering virtual counseling sessions and support groups through Zoom, a web-based video conferencing application for children,
communities that are currently unable to receive visitors. After the initial shock of school closures and social restrictions reverberated through local communities, the ripple effect of postponed sports programs, school trips, concerts, and other events has been felt far and wide. These aftershocks may not be over yet, which is why schools are taking every effort to support their students, families, and communities as needs arise. “Educators, students, coaches, and families are all grieving missed opportunities,” explained Erica Hershock, who holds a Master of Education and has 15 years of experience in school counseling. “Leaders have quickly surveyed the current situation; staff are working around the clock to put flexible action plans in place. They are actively researching and implementing creative and equitable ways to connect and instruct all students.” For those in education, the objectives haven’t changed even if the methodology has undergone drastic adjustments. Community members can be assured that those at the heart of education are as committed as ever to finding the best possible solutions in this uncharted territory.

families that rely on food assistance should still seek help when they need it. CPFB leaders are committed to meeting the elevated need that they believe will develop as the COVID-19 situation continues. CPFB leaders have advised their charitable food partners to continue their work with a modified delivery, such as drivethrough distribution sites, graband-go meals, and appointment-only access to food pantries to limit the gathering of large groups of people. The process for signing up for the programs can be done over the phone in many cases or will be waived all together, so people should not hesitate to ask for help. Readers may visit the Find Food page on www.central pafoodbank.org to find the program closest to them. Second, community assistance is needed to keep the CPFB operating well. Volunteerism is critical to the core mission of the CPFB and its partner agencies. To ensure the safety of the volunteers, the food bank has implemented several restrictions, including limiting staffing to only 10 individuals at a time. People who are healthy and have some free time to give are invited to volunteer. Finally, if people want to help, financial contributions are being welcomed. The CPFB can acquire nutritious food in large quantities that has been handled safely and make it stretch very far. A $1 donation can help the food bank provide six meals. Rather than bringing people together in person for a traditional food drive, CPFB staffers can set groups up to do a virtual food drive online. Penn State Health Seeks Supplies While Penn State Health currently has what it needs to protect its health care workers and care for its patients in response to COVID-19, events are changing rapidly. Penn State Health recognizes that it could experience shortages in the future and has begun accepting drop-off donations of critical supplies from the community. Penn State Health will accept drop-off donations of key supplies from the community-atlarge at three area locations. Those locations are Penn State Health Center, 175 Crystal A Drive, Hershey; Penn State Health St. Joseph Foundation Office (blue building front), 1036 MacArthur Road, Reading; and Penn State Health Medical Group - Lancaster Clinical Lab, 2301 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. Penn State Health has plans in place to manage patients with special illnesses while safeguarding patients, hospital visitors, health care workers, and the community. To ensure doctors, nurses and other staff treating COVID-19 patients remain safe and healthy, Penn State Health has distributed personal protective equipment and patient hygiene kits to all clinic and practice sites. In addition, Penn State Health continues to adopt best practices in its ongoing commitment to safety and high-quality care for its communities. While Penn State Health appreciates the community support, residents are reminded to follow the latest guidance from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Governor’s Office about leaving their homes for nonessential travel. Individuals are encouraged
to consolidate their essential trips with drop-off activities. For details about what, when, and where to donate, readers may visit https://hmc.pennstate health.org/community.

Prima AtHome Content Available Like many other entities, theaters across the country, including Prima, have had to temporarily close their doors in an effort to protect patrons and team members. In the midst of Prima’s event postponements, its under-stage basement flooded, rendering significant losses under 15 inches of water. In order to engage and support the community, Prima has launched Prima AtHome, offering video streaming content from both past productions and
new living room concerts. Readers may visit www.prima lancaster.org/athome to peruse streaming concerts and theater productions. Prima AtHome plans to release material every four days throughout April. An entire month of AtHome is free with a minimum set donation. These funds will provide resources to local out-of-work theater artists and ensure Prima is able to create programming in the future.

Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware, and Susquehanna Valley faces a record number of wishes waiting to be granted as a result of the recent need to postpone all wishes that involve travel due to the public and medical concerns of COVID-19. As more than 80% of local wishes involve travel or large gatherings, 42 wishes throughout Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware, and Susquehanna Valley were immediately impacted with additional wishes being impacted every day. The challenging circumstances have inspired Make-A-Wish to think creatively about how to bring hope and joy to Make-AWish children during unpredictable and scary times. On March 20, Make-A-Wish announced Messages of Hope to give supporters and the general public a fun, easy way to help children with critical illnesses without leaving the house. Through Messages of Hope, Make-A-Wish invites members of the public to spread hope and anticipation by writing, recording, or photographing themselves delivering messages of encouragement for children who are waiting for wishes that have been impacted by COVID-19. Leading up to its Giving Week on Wednesday, April 22, Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware, and Susquehanna Valley will begin a Wishes Are Waiting video series on its social media channels to highlight local children who are waiting for their wish to come true. Before sharing their messages, participants are asked to consider making a donation at www.wishes arewaiting.com to prepare MakeA-Wish to grant the unprecedented number of pending wishes once normal operations resume. The last step is to post the messages to any social media channel along with the tag @MakeAWishPHL and the hashtag #WishesAreWaiting. Two or more friends should also be tagged and challenged because the more messages shared, the greater the impact on children and their families. Messages of Hope can also be shared directly on the organization’s posts. The announcement of Messages of Hope comes a little more than a month ahead of the chapter’s firstever Giving Week beginning on April 22. This virtual event is meant to raise funds for the more than 450 local children with critical illnesses waiting for a wish, a number that is continuing to grow with the COVID-19 outbreak. During Giving Week, some of the messages received on the official Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley social media accounts will be shared publicly.
