When nursery teacher Dawn realized that Sherry, the mother of one of her students, was on the verge of homelessness, she connected her to Bridge of Hope @ Good Samaritan Services (GSS). The program saved Sherry, the mother of four, after a family conflict jeopardized their living arrangement. Through those essential two years, Sherry See Golf Outing pg 4
Sherry (left) received a Certificate of Achievement after graduating from Bridge of Hope @ Good Samaritan Services’ two-year program. She was congratulated by Christy Stoltzfus, the family resource coordinator who worked with her.

DONEGAL EDITION
Eight Donegal High School juniors who are participating in the Lancaster Chamber’s Women in Business Mentoring Program visited the Milanof-Schock Library in Mount Joy in March. One requirement of each student active in the program is to participate in a volunteer experience in her local community. The young women identified MilanofSchock Library as a place where they wanted to spend time and offer their help. The students took on a number of spring cleaning tasks for the library, including cleaning windows and blinds, shredding papers and organizing books. At the library, the young women learned that the library, though a nonprofit organization, is a business. They also learned the library is technology-driven in its community services. The Women in Business Mentoring Program aims to help shape and grow the future leaders of the local workforce by providing guidance, sharing wisdom and

The Tri-County Conewago Creek Association (TCCCA) will hold its 11th annual Conewago Creek Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 27, from noon to 4 p.m. The event will take place on the banks of the creek at Aberdeen Mills, 2405 Mill Road, Elizabethtown. In the case of rain, the family-friendly event will take place on Sunday, April 28, with all times remaining the same. A variety of activities will be offered during the afternoon. A wildflower and tree identification walk will kick off at noon. Tours through the old mill will also be offered. Attendees may bring a lawn chair or blanket if they prefer to sit during the show. At 3 p.m., the Lancaster County Conservation District will conduct a stream study with the purpose of investigating what aquatic insects are present in order to determine the health of the stream. An electro-fishing demonstration will take place immediately afterward. An electrical current will be run through the water, temporarily stunning the fish. The fish will then be collected in nets, temporarily placed in a fish tank, and identified to assess water quality. All fish are affected by electricity, so this method potentially produces fish that often elude anglers. Food will be available for purchase, with

community having their own sales, but the youth group also has a food stand and sells perennials as well,” said Harnish. “Each year over the past few years, we’ve raised about $3,000 to $4,000 from this event, and we hope to continue that trend.” He noted that members of the youth group actively participate in the fundraiser. “The youth group helps with setup and tear-down before and after the event, as well as working to sell mulch ahead of time,” Harnish said. “During the event, they help by going out on mulch deliveries and assisting with any other odds and ends that need to be taken care of.” Harnish noted that the popular springtime event, which began in 2010, is designed as a community outreach as well. “In addition to raising funds for the youth group, we hope to host an event that brings people outside to hopefully enjoy some nice weather and that allows the community to interact and grow closer,” he stated. Child Care Center To Celebrate 50 Years In the late 1960s, church leaders in Elizabethtown decided to help the growing number of families with two parents in the workplace. Thus, in 1969, the United Churches Elizabethtown Area organization founded an outreach program known as the Elizabethtown Child Care Center (ECCC). “As a group, they recognized that there was a need for child care in the community,” explained Allyson Cook, ECCC executive director. Originally a preschool only, the program was housed at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church. In 1989, the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren became a second location, housing programs for infants and toddlers as well as morning and afternoon programs for kindergartners. In 1993, services again were expanded to include before- and after-school care, also at the Church of the Brethren. In 1999, the entire ECCC was consolidated at Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, where it remains today. The ECCC is planning an anniversary celebration to mark its 50 years of service. The celebration will take place on Saturday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the center, 777 S. Mount Joy St., Elizabethtown. The community is invited to join. “We wouldn’t be where we are if it weren’t for the support and generosity of the community that we’re in,” said Cook. The day’s activities will include tours of
the center; children’s games and activities, such as face painting and balloons; and live music performed by Corty Byron, an ECCC alumnus, and Josh Tindall, one of the church’s pastors, and his wife, Elizabeth, church keyboardist. Emergency response vehicles will visit if available. There will also be a “selfie station” with 1960s-era props. At 12:30 p.m., a brief program will recognize current and former families, staff and members of the center’s board of directors. The event is free, with popcorn and whoopie pies donated by local companies. A barbecue platter can be purchased for lunch, with proceeds to benefit tuition assistance and educational improvements. Most activities will take place outside, weather permitting, with plans to move inside in the case of bad weather. Each year the ECCC serves more than 200 children from 6-week-olds through fifth-graders. Hours are Mondays through Fridays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. About a third of the children qualify for reduced tuition based on family income. Over the years, the center’s mission has been the same: to offer a high-quality early learning curriculum for the children it serves. “There has been so much research that shows how important that is for children and for school readiness,” said Cook. The center has been accredited since 1991 by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and is a Keystone 4 STAR Center, having
obtained Pennsylvania’s highest rating for a child care center. In addition to its preschool, the center offers a kindergarten “wraparound” program with lesson plans designed to complement what kindergartners are learning during their half-day at school. Parent Melissa Derr, board vice chair, has been pleased with her son’s experience. “He essentially got full-day kindergarten by going to ECCC in the afternoon and East High (Street Elementary School) in the morning,” she said. Emotional and social development is also a “huge focus,” noted Cook. “Children need those basic skills, that basic foundation, in order to be ready to learn,” she
stated. “They need to know that they are somewhere safe; they need to know that their basic needs are going to be met. They need to feel safe and loved.” The center currently serves some children whose parents had attended the ECCC. “Being in this community for 50 years, people know our name,” said board chair Johanna Gardiner. “And that’s something that we are very proud of. We work very hard to make sure that our name continues to stay out in the community and … to ensure that we maintain the standards that we’ve achieved.” For more information, readers may visit www.etownchildcare.org or call 717361-9824.

Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC), in partnership with local law enforcement, will host a prescription drug take-back event as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The event will take place on Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Giant Food Stores, 1278 N. Market St., Elizabethtown. Individuals should use the pharmacy entrance. Medication lock boxes from the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office will also be available. The National Prescription Drug TakeBack Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications. The DEA launched its prescription drug take-back program when both the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration advised the public that the usual methods for disposing of unused medicines flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash - posed potential safety and health hazards. EACTC is a community organization committed to improving the lives of children, youths, and families in the Elizabethtown area. Using researchbased programs, initiatives, and strategies, the organization aims to guide and encourage youths in making positive choices about alcohol, drugs, and other high-risk behaviors.

The Donegal Primary School (DPS) firstgrade art contest will take place at the Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ on East Elizabeth Street. History enthusiasts may purchase tickets for a guided historical walking tour; tours will be led by Robert Lescallette and will begin at 9 a.m. and noon. More activities in the town square will include storyteller Jan Betty from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., songs and the Virginia reel by DPS second-graders and the traditional maypole dance by Donegal Intermediate students at 1:30 p.m., and a cakewalk at 2:30 p.m. Mayfest celebrations occurred annually for decades after the town’s founding. MHS, formed in 1985, sponsored Mayfest celebrations from 1985 through 2011 and then reinstated Mayfest last year with plans to continue it as an annual event. The society also has a goal to construct a building in which to display the town’s artifacts and historical documents. Mayfest publicity chairperson Autumn Kingsboro said that the MHS welcomes new, active members. “We want to keep the spirit and support of our little town, to keep that closeness,” she stated. Mayfest will take place rain or shine. For more details, readers may visit www.maytownhistory.org or call Linda Good at 717725-2437.

6K Run/Walk Will Support Global Clean Water Projects By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Kreider Farms is known for its dairy products, but on Saturday, May 4, the focus will be on water when the Kreider family hosts a World Vision Global 6K for Water event. The 6-kilometer run/walk will begin at 525 Indian Village Road, Manheim, at 9 a.m. and will go through what marketing and social media specialist Khalee Kreider noted that her family calls “Kreider Valley.” “Last year, Kreider Farms hosted the Global 6K for the first year with high expectations to bring clean water to 2,000 people,” said Khalee, a member of the fourth generation to be involved in the family business. “We went over and beyond our goal, raising upward of $150,000 and providing clean water to over 3,000 people. We would like to meet or even exceed our achievement last year in 2019.” Separate fees have been set for adults and for children under age 18. World Vision promises that each Global 6K for Water adult participant’s registration fee provides clean water for one person in need for a lifetime. Six kilometers has been set for the event to represent how far the average person in the developing world must walk for water, which is often contaminated, to sustain themselves and their families. According to information provided by World Vision, the average woman in rural Africa walks 6 kilometers to haul 40 pounds of water every day. Worldwide, women and girls spend a combined 200 million hours hauling water daily. Water projects by World Vision are developed in conjunction
with local leaders to create safe sources of drinking water, whether through a borehole well, an irrigation system, or a pump or filtration system powered by a solar panel. The organization also provides training so that local folks can maintain and repair the systems to ensure the project is sustainable. Although this is the second year the Kreider family has hosted a Global 6K site, Khalee’s parents, Ron and Hollee, have had a long-standing relationship with World Vision. “They have been on multiple trips with World Vision to multiple countries including Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, India, and Bangladesh to see the work first hand that World Vision is doing in these developing communities,” Khalee said. “Last year we were excited to host a 6K on our farm and invite the community to join us in supporting this organization close to our hearts and make an impact bringing clean water, something we all take for granted, to children and communities around the world.” The run/walk will be held rain or shine.
Last year’s event took place in the rain. “It ended up pouring last year, so we have our fingers crossed for sun. We prayed for water, and we got it, just not in the form we were expecting,” Khalee joked. Most of the course will be on paved roads or sidewalks, but there may be sections that are gravel. Strollers are welcome, and Khalee noted that even with the rain last year, people using strollers did not seem to have difficulties with the course. At the end of the course, chocolate milk, other beverages, and lactose-free ice cream will be served. Off-site parking will be available at Doe Run Elementary School, 281 Doe Run Road, Manheim, and Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. Shuttles will run from the parking lots to the start line beginning at 7 a.m., with the last shuttle picking up at 8:30 a.m. The buses will start back up at 10:30 a.m. to transport folks back to the parking areas. Participants may register in advance at www.teamworldvision.org/team/kreider farms, or they may sign up at the event.
A World Vision Global 6K For Water event in Manheim last year drew plenty of participants and smiles - in spite of the rain. This year’s event will be held at Kreider Farms on May 4.

Indians Top Columbia, Hold Off Crusaders by Vaughn Brown
With the second half of the season yet to come, Donegal is doing what it has to in order to stay in the thick of the Section Three race. As of last Wednesday, the Indians were sitting in third place at 7-3 while Octorara (7-1) and Manheim Central (9-1) held on to the top spots. With two games in before an early Easter press deadline, Donegal turned in solid performances in both a 10-0 win over Columbia last Tuesday followed by a slim, 2-1 victory over Lancaster Catholic the following day. Strong pitching held the day in the shutout over the Crimson Tide, while timely hitting sealed the deal versus the Crusaders. Brandon Buckius toed the rubber in the showdown with Columbia and threw a complete, five inning game before the mercy rule came into play. He earned the shutout victory while giving up only four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts. “The Columbia game was nice to have a five-run first inning,” stated head coach Jeff Hartman. “Most of the damage was done with two outs. Brandon Buckius had another solid outing on the mound and we are settling in on defense.” At the plate, Solomon Myers made
the most of his two hits, driving in four runs including two on a single in that big first inning for the Indians. He was also instrumental in bringing about the end of the game when he tripled in the fifth, driving in another two runs, and then scoring the tenth and final run on a single by Zach Leid (2-3, 2RBI). Using a little two-out magic, the Indians first got on the board when Noah Karichner (2-3, 2RBI) singled into left field, scoring Kyle Burger (0-2, RBI). Three more singles by Matt Wallace (13, RBI), Myers, and Leid gave Donegal a five-run cushion which they expanded by one in the second before scoring the final four runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. After losing a one-run lead in the second inning against Lancaster Catholic, when the Crusaders tied things up on a two-out single, Donegal answered in the fifth with what became the eventual game winner. Leid (1-2) began the inning with a single to left, advancing to second on an errant throw. A Joel Grillo (1-2, RBI) single into center field then brought him home with the winning run. “The Catholic High game was a signature win for our program,” noted Hartman. “A 2-1 victory over a perennial playoff team and defending 3A state champion.”
Karichner got the nod on the mound and picked up the win by going the distance, surrendering six hits and no runs with five strikeouts and no walks. Donegal only notched five hits on the day, but made them count beginning with a double by Drew Bechtold (1-3) in the first that led to a 1-0 lead when Will Small (1-3, RBI) sent a 1-2 single into right field with one out to score him from third. “Noah Karichner scattered six hits and kept LC off balance and we played our best defensive game behind him. Drew Bechtol also played a fine game scoring our first run and was very solid behind the plate defensively like always,” said Hartman. “Very nice mid-season win for the boys!” Lancaster Catholic had a prime opportunity to go ahead in the top half of the fifth, but failed to capitalize on the moment. With two outs and runners on first and third, a ground ball hit to Xavier Cannon turned into a third out, fielder’s choice when he fired to Small at second to get the force out with the runner heading for home. TRACK Add another win to the column for both the boys’ and girls’ teams as each claimed a victory over Lancaster Catholic last Tuesday to remain unbeaten at 4-0. While the guys ran away with a seemingly easy 104-46
win, the ladies had a slightly tougher go of it while taking a 90-59 triumph. Four boys claimed two first place finishes apiece and two relay teams took top finishes in a meet that saw Donegal sweep the throws and lose only one jump. Cael Rapp finished first in both the javelin (161-10) and shot put (41-4) and was joined by dual winner Matt Brown who won the long jump (19-3) and high jump (5-8) with Nathan Brubaker winning the pole vault (10-6) and Connor Ruhl taking the discus (110-2). Rounding out the field events with second place finishes were Owen Kling in the shot (46-9) as well as the discus (109-1), Porter Scott in the triple jump (41-5.25), Bailey Crager in the javelin (137-0), and Francis Licopoli in the high jump (5-6). Going 2-1 in the relays, Ethan Steck, Brock Overlander, Logan Fry, and Ryan Zuch led Donegal to victory in the 3200 with a time of 8:47.5, while in the 1600 it was Kevin Slattery, Michael Linebarger, Camden Palmer, and Aedan Wilkinson taking the top spot in 3:50.9. Overlander also took first in the 3200 (11:13.5) as well. Also, in the individual races, two boys came home with dual victories for the Indians as Aedan Wilkinson won both hurdles with a 15.8 in the 100 and a 43.4 in the 300 and Jared Collazo scored first place finishes in the 100 as well as the 200 with respective times of 10.8 and 23.3. Finishing second in the
individuals were Matthew Jackson in the 100 (11.2), Fry in the 1600 (5:04.9), and Brubaker in the 400 (56.4). The lady Indians showed their dominance on the track, sweeping all but the relays where they went 2-1 on the day. Led by Taylor Nissley’s triple attack in the sprints where she ran a 12.1 in the 100, 27.0 in the 200, and 59.2 in the 400 to lock up all three, Donegal also had a dual event winner in Alex Daly who took both hurdles with an 18.3 in the 100 and a 54.0 in the 300. Other individual winners included Amanda Fry in the 1600 (5:40.9) as well as second place in the 400 (63.8), Myra Naqvi in the 800 (2:33.6), Rachel Fernald in the 3200 (13:05), and Janelle Brinser in the pole vault (7-6) as well as second place in the triple jump (316.25). Meanwhile, Keri Anderson, Fry, Hadley Shoaf, and Naqvi led the way to victory in the 3200, finishing in a time of 10:45.4 and in the 1600 it was Sarah Hinkel, Anderson, Fry, and Naqvi winning it all in 4:32.6. Securing second place finishes were Desiree Whitcraft in the 300 hurdles, Anderson in the 800 (2:38.7), Shoaf in the 1600 (5:45.7), McKenzie DuBusky in the 3200 (13:36.4), Amaya Woods in the high jump (3-10), Hannah McNece in the javelin (108-8), Ashanti Berry in the shot put (29-11), and Aliza Johns in the discus (83-9). TENNIS Donegal ended its regular season on a down note, dropping the final three matches before the start of the L-L League tournament which began on Monday. The team started with a 5-2 loss to Manheim Central on Saturday, April 13 before losing 5-0 to Elizabethtown last Tuesday and 6-1 to Pequea Valley on Wednesday.
Against the Barons, the duo of Evan Stehman and Luke Yunginger gave the Indians their first team point with a 9-7 win over Hunter Winters and Scott Westfield at #2 doubles before a hard-fought tie-break victory at #3 singles by Nathan McNece accounted for the second. McNece swept Winters 6-0 in the first set before falling 5-7 in the second and then rallying for the 10-4 advantage in the tie-breaker. Though the final score against the visiting Bears showed a shut-out loss, the match was much closer than the final result as three of those points went in favor of the visitors in tiebreakers. The teams of Yunginger and Noah Hoffmaster, and Aaron Rugh and Kyle Bitting refused to go quietly with respective scores of 6-2, 7-6, (2), and 3-6, 7-6, (5), 10-5 while Evan Stehman lost 5-7, 7-6, (7) in #2 singles. Wednesday’s match with Pequea Valley also had a close, tie-break loss with McNece losing his #3 singles match to Hunter Winey 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 with the #2 doubles team of Stehman and Yunginger beating Josh Heinrich and Joshua Jarvis 8-4 for the lone team point. SOFTBALL It was a tale of two different battles, although each ending in similar fashion, another win for the lady Indians. Playing two games last week, Donegal easily handled Columbia on Tuesday 22-7 and then earned a 5-0 victory over Lancaster Catholic on Wednesday night. An early 3-0 lead by Columbia in the first inning was short lived as Donegal blew up for eight runs in the bottom half which included home

MERCHANDISER - Donegal Edition Sierra Neiss took the ball to start versus Lancaster Catholic and was impressive in the win, throwing a no-hitter with three walks while striking out 14 of the 25 batters she faced. The Crusaders never were able to threaten on the bases while Donegal used a three-run third inning for cushion, adding one more in the sixth and again in the seventh. In that pivotal inning, Gibbs (2-4) singled and reached second on a stolen base before Morgan Biesecker (0-3) walked. A single by Neiss into center scored Gibbs and moved Biesecker to third. runs by Stephanie Reider (2-2, 3RBI) and Maddie Gohn (2-4, 2RBI). While the Indians were never in danger after that, the Crimson Tide would not go away, adding a run in the second, two in the third and another in the fourth before Donegal added six more in their final at bat, forcing the mercy rule into effect. Jasmine Mann struggled in the start for Donegal, but held on for the win as she recorded five strikeouts and two walks while giving up five earned runs and two unearned on 11 hits. The Indians responded with 16 hits and were led by Aysha Gibbs (3-5, 3RBI), Lydia Miller (2-3, 4RBI), Reider, and Gohn.

Anchor Christian Academy students have participated in an array of activities this spring. Last month, two students from Anchor Christian Academy won awards at the North Museum Science and Engineering Fair. Lucas Horst, a ninth-grader, placed third in the Senior Division’s Energy: Chemical category for his project “Ready for Launch.” Sara Lang, an eighth-grader, received the Union Fire Company No. 1’s award for an outstanding project related to fire science for her project “Does Fabric Softener Affect the Flammability of Fabric?” During recent field trips to High Steel and Lancaster County Central Park, students learned about the physics of bridges, the process of building girders, and types of careers available in the bridge manufacturing industry, as well as the process of collecting “tree water” and turning it into maple syrup. While on a hike along the Appalachian Trail, history teacher Bruce Hoover brought the French and Indian War to life for students as they visited the graves of Native Americans and freed slaves and visited the Fort Hunter mansion. Anchor students had an opportunity to ask Rep. Lloyd Smucker questions on a variety of topics when he visited the school recently. Families interested in learning more about Anchor Christian Academy are invited to attend an open house on Monday, May 6, and to schedule a day for their students to shadow before school ends on Thursday, May 2. Enrollment for the 2019-20 year is now open. Interested families may register online at www.AnchorChristianAcademy.org. The website also provides additional information about the secondary University-Model school.
