On hand at the 2020 EPC Golf Outing during a donation from $3,000 presenting sponsor Alwine Security to GSS were (from left) EPC representatives Lauren Hillegas, Jeremy Engle, and Jocelyn Engle; Alwine Security owner Jamie Alwine; Nate Hoffer, CEO of GSS; and Derek Sanders and Matt Rhoads of Alwine.
14th Annual EPC Golf Outing Will Benefit Good Samaritan Services BY COURTNEY MENGEL
n 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing
“...There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth. Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.” “Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of

times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.” Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing. “I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful, beautiful people. There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth. Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.” Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 14th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 11, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf course. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS.

The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will roll through town on Sunday, May 9. This year’s 100-truck convoy will leave from the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction at 1:30 p.m. and will run a route from Manheim through Mount Joy. “The auto auction will not be open to the public, and we won’t be
having the carnival we usually have, but there are still several ways for people to participate,” said Terry Finch, co-chair of the convoy committee. “We’ll have a livestream on our chapter’s Facebook page, and we’ll post everything also on www.wishcovoy.org. We are also going to have a drive-through chicken dinner pickup at Country Table Restaurant in Mount Joy, which is right along the route.” Preorders are being taken at the event website.

DONEGAL EDITION
“This year, we will have a live auction, outside under a tent, in addition to a simultaneous online auction,” said Liz Heisey, auction chair. “We will have TV screens in the live auction tent showing what’s being shown online. People can bid in person or from their homes.” The auction will include some big-ticket items such as a lawn tractor, a Yeti cooler and a weekend mountain getaway, Heisey noted. “We will have a handmade four-sided picnic table made by a Kraybill parent,” she added. “We will have lots of quilts.” Highlights of the event include auctioning off class projects. “Each class works together to come up with a themed basket or a personalized project,” Heisey explained, noting that parents in her son’s prekindergarten class refinished an old student desk and chair, and then students put their handprints on it to make a unique keepsake. Teachers also auction off opportunities for students to participate in one-on-one experiences with them, such as trips for miniature golf or ice cream. A children’s tent will feature a Mother’s Day

In addition to the auction items, the event will feature a pig roast on Friday night and a chicken barbecue on Saturday. Additional food options will include the Mount Joy Rotary french fry truck, Dutch Country Soft Pretzels, hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches and Gene Wenger’s Meats’ hamburgers, along with baked goods and strawberry pies. Proceeds from the auction help cover tuition costs and pay for maintenance projects at the school. “We use the money toward offsetting the cost of private education so we can keep our tuition down,” Heisey explained, adding that in 2018 and 2019, the auction raised $110,000 each year, and she’d like to meet that goal this year. Last year’s auction was canceled due to the pandemic. “It’s great to be able to see other people and share the enthusiasm of the students and alumni who come back every year to see the

After a year when most events were canceled, the Elizabethtown Fair committee is eager to get back in action. “ We’ll be doing things a little differently than past years, with masks and social distancing, but we are ready. The public is ready for the fair to come back. Everybody is ready,” said Sally Nolt, fair secretary. “It’s really exciting.” Fundraising is a big part of the preparation for the fair, which will run from Monday, Aug. 23, through Saturday, Aug. 28. Donegal baseball continues to gain momentum as the season cruises into its final weeks, recently picking up wins over Pequea Valley and Lancaster Catholic after a loss to Solanco. On Wednesday the 21st, the Tribe topped Pequea Valley 6-3 after trailing 3-0 early on. Five hits and a pair of three-run innings brought Donegal back into the contest. Relief pitcher Caden Evans earned the win, throwing for four and a third innings, allowing zero runs on two hits, and striking out one. Smart base running earned the Indians six stolen bases, with Josh Schwartz blazing the way with two successful steals. AJ Small gathered two hits, an RBI, and scored once to lead the day at the

It took just three hits to get the job done, despite Lancaster’s collective five hits and 3-0 lead until Donegal got on the scoreboard in the fifth. With two outs in the top of the fifth, Baughman doubled, and scored on Colin Eckinger’s single. Still trailing by two, Donegal’s biggest offensive surge took place in their final at bat when a Crusader error and a pair of walks put Jaden Fabian, Baughman, and Eckinger on base. Ian Brown stepped in to pinch run for Fabian and scored on a single by Photo by Cheri Sine Small. After capturing the lead, the Indian defense got the job done during their final turn in the field and retired the side in order. “We maximized our opportunities in the last inning. Great to see our guys be clutch in a big moment against a good team,” praised head coach Jeff Hartman. Seizing the win on the mound was Nicholas Eichelberger who threw all seven innings scattering five hits and three runs while striking out one. The previous weekend the Tribe suffered a hard fought 9-4 loss to Photo by Cheri Sine Indian first baseman Nicholas Eichelberger snags the high throw Solanco, but managed to collect six to make the putout on Solanco’s Ronnie Fulton in Donegal’s 9-4, hits. nonleague loss to the visiting Mules on April 17. Cannon drove home one of his two RBIs with a crushed triple to center field, scoring Small in the Indians final at bat. A wild pitch followed by a double off the bat of Owen Fisher brought the Indians’ run count to four before the Mules’ defense closed the inning. Eckinger finished the day with two hits and Fisher’s day at the plate included a hit, an RBI, and a walk. “Owen Fisher took advantage of an opportunity with a solid day at the plate,” pointed out Hartman. Despite being saddled with the loss, Indian pitcher Jaden Fabian had an impressive day on the mound, allowing seven runs and six hits in his four and a third innings of work and striking out seven batters. “Best outing of the year by Jaden. He pitched great through some adversity,” added Hartman. TRACK As schedules continue to shift, an impromptu track meet between the Provided as a community service by this civic minded publication Indians and a shorthanded Dayspring and the Association of Free Community Publications Christian squad, which produced a
double Donegal win, was held Monday the 19th. For the boys, the 72-42 victory featured a sweep in the throwing events with Zach Nissley topping both javelin and shot put, and Owen Kling claiming the discus. Sprinting to victory, Noah Hinkle took first in the 200m, Logan Fry the 400m, Brock Overlander the 800m, and Hunter Gehman the 1600m. Donegal captured one of the jumping events with Jackson Dearborn winning the high. Samuel Rothstein, Fry, Overland, and Gehman secured one of the two relay races, taking the 4x800 in 8:47.5. With Dayspring unable to fill all the events, the Donegal girls achieved a lopsided 127-9 victory with many Donegal athletes competing against one another, yet they still managed to excel to new heights. Hadley Shoaf had a standout day winning the 800m, while freshmen Baily Shoaf and Ashley Garcia competed alongside Amanda Fry and Emma Myers for a 4x800 relay performance win. The foursome set out with the goal of registering a time under the 11-minute mark and succeeded with a time of 10:57.2. Freshman Hannah Slobozien claimed the best long jump Donegal has seen this season (14-2.5) after only competing in the event three times, and sophomore Anna Brubaker’s 4-10 high jump was a personal best and tied for the seventh best in program history. “I was proud of their ability to compete with each other as well as being intrinsically motivated enough to still push themselves,” commented head coach Bryce Sadler. TENNIS The Indians wrapped up a 4-3 win over Pequea Valley on the 21st.

Owen Fisher breaks off of third base during Donegal’s 9-4, nonleague loss to visiting Solanco on April 17.
The contest began on the 19th but had to be completed two days later. The win featured singles victories from Jacob Erb, Evan Stehman, and Akilan Murugesan. The successes allowed Stehman and Erb to both maintain their undefeated status and each improved to 11-0, while pairing up for the days only doubles victory as well. The night before, the Indians overcame Annville-Cleona 5-2. Again, it was Erb, Stehman, and Murugesan who battled to singles victory as well as pairing for doubles wins. Murugesan and Erb stifled their doubles opponents 8-2, and Stehman joined up with Luke Yunginger for an 8-6 triumph. SOFTBALL A 10-3 win at Pequea Valley on April 21st marked Donegal’s sixth consecutive win and brings the Lady Indians’ record to 8-2. Sophomore Cara Biesecker has been in the circle to earn all six of those wins, taking down Pequea Valley after allowing five hits, three runs, and striking out six. The win featured 11 Donegal hits with Madeline Gohn and Emma Garber each supplying two. Gohn and Biesecker led the team in RBIs with two apiece. On Monday, the club overcame early scoring by Lancaster Catholic to take the contest 6-2 at home.
Donegal racked up nine hits to bring in their six runs. Garber led with three hits and one RBI, and Natalie Colwell had two hits and one RBI. Biesecker once again pitched all seven innings, giving up five hits and two runs, and striking out one. On April 15th, the crew, with an impressive 22 hits, secured a 16-7 win over Octorara. Colwell had a standout day at the plate capping her day with a grand slam in the top of the sixth and finishing with four hits and five RBIs. Garber also produced a homer as part of her three hit, two RBI day, and Bella Mackison drove home three runs while collecting four hits that included three doubles. The remainder of Donegal’s slew of hits came from Biesecker (2), Aysha Gibbs (2), Madeline Gohn (2) Paige Miller (2) and one apiece from Kara Heidlauf, Aaliyah Cannon, and Esther Myers. Biesecker struck out six to lead the defense from the circle. SIGNING DAY Four Donegal athletes took part in the National Letter of Intent Signing Day on April 14. Madeline Gohn (Messiah College, softball), Logan Fry (York College of PA, cross country), Michael Linebarger (Hood College, soccer), and Sean Haines (Alvernia University, soccer) will all continue their academic and athletic careers in the fall.

passed away in January. Barbara wasn’t sure how she’d get through the days without Devere, but she now has a roommate, Marlene Campbell, with whom she prays, sings and socializes. “She is an inspiration,” Barbara said. “The days seemed long after Devere’s death. I sat on the edge of my bed and thought, ‘Is this all I’m going to do?’ Then they paired me with Marlene, and now the days disappear.” Barbara is looking forward to visiting with her family, which now includes 12 grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren, grateful that her faith has guided her through this past year. Faith is a big part of the Mount Hope community, which provides skilled nursing and rehabilitation to 50 seniors regardless of their ability to pay. To help support the ongoing ministry of Mount Hope, the public is invited to a drive-through curbside pickup meal to be held on Saturday, May 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the LCBC Manheim Campus, 2392 Mount Joy Road. East Petersburg Mayor James Malone noted that Sunday, May 2, has been proclaimed Bells Across Pennsylvania Day. On May 2, at 7 p.m., residents, businesses, and churches will be encouraged to ring bells for three minutes in a solid chorus of statewide support for the Pennsylvanians who put themselves in harm’s way to serve the public during the pandemic. Elected officials across the commonwealth have joined together to promote the second annual Bells Across Pennsylvania Day to show gratitude for their hometown heroes. On March 6, 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a statewide disaster emergency was issued. In every municipality, essential service providers have continued their work at the expense of themselves and their families to serve the general public. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, more than 1 million Pennsylvanians have contracted COVID-19 and over 25,000 residents have died from the virus.

“The Pennsylvania State Mayors’ Association held the event last year as a way to say thank you to everyone from nurses to police to firemen to grocery store workers,” said Malone. “I’m in information technology and I’m designated as an essential service provider, but I don’t typically have to interact with others. People working on the front lines don’t have that opportunity.” Malone said he views this event as an opportunity to promote social interaction. “Across the nation, people have fallen into the mentality of not interacting with anyone, and that’s not good,” he said. “This gives everyone a chance to realize we’re all in this together.” Event planning will be local. Malone encourages each municipality to determine whom they want to honor, how they want to honor them, and where they want to honor them. “We know that these workers are struggling and taking risks to help others,” stated Malone. “These people are the reason we’re still functioning as well as we are.”
