Kraybill Mennonite School Gears Up For Benefit Auction By Chelsea Peifer

Organizers of the Kraybill Mennonite School (KMS) Benefit Auction invite the community to join in the fun on Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11, at the school, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy. Proceeds from the two-day event will go directly toward KMS and help to bridge the gap between tuition and actual school expenses. Auction chair Liz Heisey said that returning to a two-day format for last year’s auction proved to be a hit with the community, and $110,000 was raised for the school - a record-breaking total at least in recent history for KMS. The silent auction will begin at 3:30 p.m.

on May 10, which is also when the live auction preview and the Mother’s Day shop will open. A variety of gift baskets, jewelry, and other items suitable for moms will be available in the Mother’s Day shop for people to purchase just in time for the holiday. “It’s been a neat (solution) for people realizing, ‘I don’t have anything for Sunday,’ and it takes care of that for them,” Heisey remarked. Bidding for the live auction will begin at 5 p.m. The highly anticipated class projects, eighth-grade projects, and teacher experiences will be up for bids at 6:30 p.m., followed by sports tickets and memorabilia at 7:45 p.m. and unique experiences at 8 p.m. Some of the noteworthy items up for bids See Kraybill pg 4

Cook Like An Ethiopian By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“Cooking is like an art. Some people will learn it from school, but I have that talent. Even when I was a refugee, I was a cook in the American embassy in Djibouti. I have that passion for cooking,” said Demeke Getahun, president of Siloam Ethiopia, a nonprofit organization that has opened a free medical clinic in Harar, the Ethiopian hometown of his wife, Wegayhu Ketema. Getahun learned to cook from his mother. After his father died when he was very young, Getahun spent much of his time helping his mother, and he learned both by observation and through practice. Those cooking skills have been called upon for Siloam Ethiopia fundraisers, where the public can sit down to a buffet meal of Ethiopian favorites. On Saturday, May 11, however, Getahun will step into the role of teacher, as he and Ketema lead an Ethiopian cooking class. The class will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at Ethiopian Evangelical Church of Landisville, 175 Church St., Landisville. Attendees will learn how to make siga tibs, atakilt wat, and yellow split peas. Getahun described siga tibs as a beef dish cooked with onion, a special kind of pepper, garlic, jalapenos, special butter, and tomato. “It’s a very tasty food. You can make it as spicy as you want,” Getahun said, acknowledging that folks have varying tolerances of spicy food. “When we do the class, we’ll explain how to cook it without spice.” Atakilt wat is a mixture of cabbage, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, onion, garlic, ginger, and olive oil. Cooks who want it spicy may add jalapeno peppers at the end.

Siloam Ethiopia board members (from left) John Lehman, Lindsey Teske, Wegayhu Ketema, Demeke Getahun, and Lenore Hutchinson are looking forward to hosting an Ethiopian cooking class on May 11 in Landisville. The yellow split peas are mild but flavorful. “Everybody loves that one,” Getahun commented. Attendees will cook each dish, and then they will sit down to eat together. The food will be served with injera, a sourdough-type flatbread made with teff, a gluten-free grain. Ketema, Siloam Ethiopia’s vice president, will help to lead the cooking class. Getahun praised the versatility of his wife’s cooking by saying, “We can make Italian and Indian food. Wegayhu went to school in India for eight years. She cooks the best rice.” Cooking class attendees will receive a gift basket containing a Siloam Ethiopia apron, recipes for each of the three dishes, Ethiopian coffee, and spices important in Ethiopian cooking. “They can cook Ethiopian food when

they go home,” Getahun said. A cost has been set to attend the class, with a special price for folks who attend in pairs. The proceeds will support an orphanage that Siloam Ethiopia is opening in a small town called Babile, which is located about 45 minutes from the clinic. Several youths are slated to move into the home to be cared for by Ethiopian house parents when the facility is ready in a few weeks. “They are very poor young ladies without mother and father. We want to give them a good life,” Getahun remarked. Registrations for the cooking class are due by Thursday, May 9. Folks may register by visiting www.siloamethio.org. For more information, readers may contact Ketema at 717-669-0930 or siloamethio@ gmail.com.

of a homemade baked good as an award. All participants will also be entered to win a variety of door prizes. Individuals who register online in advance will receive an email with an optional invitation to create a personal fundraising page. The idea is that registrants can share the page on social media or by email to raise additional funds for Arm of Hope, which will enable more students to attend camp. According to Grove, it costs approximately $50 to send a child to the camp. As an added incentive to raise funds, prizes - including tickets to a local amusement park, stainless steel tumblers, and hooded sweatshirts - will be awarded to participants who raise certain dollar amounts. Another way for area residents to help the children in Accra is by donating used cleats. Folks may bring used cleats along on race day or contact Grove at info@armofhope5k.org to set up another time to drop off donated cleats. The group that is traveling to Ghana in July will transport all of the cleats to Arm of Hope to be given to the children. To learn more about the Arm of Hope ministry or to sponsor a child, interested individuals may visit www.armofhopeinghana.org.

The sixth annual Arm of Hope 5K on Saturday, May 18, at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy, is designed to raise funds to make it possible for any child to attend camp regardless of whether or not he or she already has a sponsor. Race organizer Greg Grove, who has traveled to Ghana several times to help with the camp, noted that race proceeds will also go toward meals, crafts, and games at the camp. Having the chance to sleep in a clean bed is one of the simple pleasures that the campers often express gratitude for, Grove said. The camp features one week for elementary school-age children and one week for high school-age students. Runners and walkers are invited to register for the Arm of Hope 5K in advance at https://hopechurchonline.org/5k or on race day beginning at 7:30 a.m. Participants will step off at 9 a.m. onto what Grove described as a flat and familyfriendly course. Strollers and pets on leashes are also welcome to join in. Chip timing will be provided. Hand-carved wooden trophies from Ghana will be awarded to the top overall female and male finishers during a postrace awards ceremony. The top two female and male finishers in each fiveyear age category will receive their choice

the Outstanding Low Volume Road Project Award for the township’s innovation that involved reusing a culvert pipe in the redesign of a low-volume road and in the end improved water quality. Benton Webber, professional engineer for Lancaster Township, was awarded the Building Industry Resource Conservation Award. Through his research, review, and design, Webber partnered with an elementary school and an apartment complex to rebuild a new basin that has successfully managed stormwater and reduced runoff of 357,000 pounds of sediment that had at one time left a failing retention basin. The Conservation District honored Paula Harnish with the Conservation Service Award for her 20 years of service and her integrity in providing program support. The Outstanding Cooperator Award was presented to a dairy farmer in Caernarvon Township. The farmer has worked with the Conservation District and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service to install a wide variety of conservation practices including a roofed manure storage, barnyard and vegetated treatment area, streambank fencing, stream cattle crossings, an improved animal trail, field contouring, and a gradient field terrace. The family milks 40 cows on a 78-acre farm. Pictured on front: Lancaster County Conservation District award winners include (from left) Sara Xenophon, Kristen Kyler, Jennifer Fetter, Lisa Hochreiter, Mark Layton, John Haldeman, Benton Webber, and Paula Harnish.

Awards from pg 1 The Lancaster County Conservation District recently recognized efforts in natural resource conservation in Lancaster County at its 68th awards banquet. Sara Xenophon, Kristen Kyler, and Jennifer Fetter, staff members of the Penn State Ag and the Environment Center, were honored as valuable partners in countless conservation and watershed projects throughout Lancaster County. Project highlights include the Conewago Watershed Initiative, the Little Conestoga Watershed Partnership, and the Chiques Creek Watershed Reenvisioned Project. Their work to establish a group of volunteers for tree plantings and their ability to work hand in hand with the Conservation District has improved water quality throughout the county. Lisa Hochreiter, agriculture educator at Warwick High School, received the Conservation Educator Award for her dedicated teaching, her commitment as an Envirothon adviser, and her support of student projects helping the local community in watershed cleanup events, trout stocking, and tree planting in riparian buffers. Mark Layton, wildlife center manager at Refreshing Mountain Retreat Center, was recognized with the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School Service Award. For several years, Layton has given his time to instruct teenagers enrolled in the field school about the conservation of reptiles and amphibians. Handson experience with local native species has helped to instill an appreciation and respect for the habitat needs of a variety of species. John Haldeman, roadmaster for Rapho Township, accepted

Ruhl’s United Methodist Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, will offer a taste of summer at its annual Strawberry and Waffle Breakfast on Saturday, May 4, from 6 to 10 a.m. The event will offer attendees unlimited homemade waffles and fresh strawberries from the Carolinas. “It isn’t quite strawberry season here in Pennsylvania,” noted organizer Gail Ruhl. “However, we often have people tell us that it is so great to have a taste of what is to come.” In addition to the strawberries and waffles, attendees may enjoy pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, homefries, and a variety of breakfast casseroles. Separate prices have been set for adults and for children, and children age 3 and under may eat for free. According to Ruhl, the event utilizes approximately 80 pounds of strawberries. “We usually go through all 80 pounds,” Ruhl noted, adding that folks are welcome to take

home a portion for a set price, as well. The event is the final fundraiser for the church’s Mission Outreach Team, which will be heading to Clendenin, W.Va., in June. The group’s previous fundraiser, a chicken potpie dinner, was a huge success, according to organizers, and they are hopeful that the strawberry and waffle breakfast will help to finalize the financial portion of the trip. The Mission Outreach Team is a multigenerational group with older members as well as members in their teens. The group has served together in various capacities for approximately 10 years. The Clendenin trip will allow the group to help with flooding damage that continues to affect the area. Catastrophic flooding affected the impoverished Appalachian region in June 2016, and many families were displaced. According to Ruhl, not only can funding and help take a while to get to the areas in need, but after a time, aid decreases even though the need is still present. The Mission Outreach Team hopes to help with the continuing reconstruction of the area. “It is surprising that it takes so long to rebuild,” Ruhl shared. “The funds dry up but there are many people who are still in need of assistance, and we hope to be of help in any way we can.” For details on the breakfast fundraiser or the Mission Outreach Team, readers may visit www.ruhlschurch.org or call 717-665-3400.

Indians Post Three Straight Shutouts in Softball Indians benefitted from both errant pitching and fielding by the Beavers With three more wins, Donegal to notch an 11-run first inning before remained unbeaten as the lady Indiending it in the third via the mercy ans posted triple shutouts beginning rule. Elizabeth Bonitz got the start for before Easter Sunday and ending last Donegal and held Lebanon Catholic to Wednesday. On Thursday, April 18 only two hits while recording seven strikeouts and no walks. Sierra Neiss toed the rubber in last Monday’s matchup with Pequea Valley and pitched a gem, notching a nohitter over five innings of play and striking out 10 of the 18 batters she faced. Donegal touched up Pequea’s Chloe Colburn for 14 hits led by Lydia Miller’s three-hit, four RBI effort in which she doubled twice. Miller first struck in the opening frame when she took a first look pitch into right field, scoring both Stephanie Reider (3-4, 2RBI) and courtesy runner Jordynn Park to put Donegal ahead 3-0. After the Indians scored once in the second, Miller tallied her second two-bagger, lining a 0-1, two-out offering into center bringing Summer Steffy (1-3) home for the 5-0 lead. With a little more competition at stake between neighboring rival Manheim Central on Wednesday, the result was still another win for the Indians. Neiss not only threw a threehit ball game against the Barons, but homered as well to give Donegal a two-run lead in the first, which turned out to be all the Indians needed. Morgan Biesecker (3-3, RBI) was first to get on base for Donegal with a single before Neiss (1-1, 2RBI) went yard on a two-out, 1-1 pitch that sailed over the fence in center field, scoring courtesy runner Lauren Stwalley for the 2-0 advantage. Donegal scored three more times in the third and added another two in the fifth on a single by Steffy (1-3, 2RBI) that brought both Stwalley and Reider (12, 1RBI) across the plate for the final score of the game. Summer Steffy hustles to first after putting down a bunt in Donegal’s 13-0, section-crossover victory at Pequea Valley last Monday.

April 18 the Indians claimed a 7-0 forfeit victory over Lebanon Catholic and then pulled off a spectacular 4-3, come-from-behind win at home over Pequea Valley. Drew Bechtold (1-2, RBI) came to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning with Donegal trailing 3-2. Courtesy runner Colin Eckinger, on base for Zach Leid (1-3) who singled to start the inning, as well as Joel Grillo (1-3) who also singled, were on base. Bechtold then sent the second pitch he saw deep into right field for a sacrifice fly that scored both runners for the walk-off win. The Indians got on board in the bottom of the first courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Will Small (0-1, RBI) into center field that brought Bechtold home. A Pequea Valley score in the third tied the game, but Donegal answered in the fourth when Solomon Myers (1-3, RBI) singled home Small to put the Indians ahead 2-1. In the top of the seventh, starting pitcher Brandon Buckius lost the lead when the Braves tied the game at 2-2. Small then came on in relief with one out and retired the side,

but not before another run scored on a sacrifice to give Pequea Valley the short-lived 3-2 advantage. Buckius went six and a third innings surrendering three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk, while Small recorded the win. A five-run second inning for Manheim Central broke a scoreless tie and put Donegal in a hole too deep to get out. The Barons scored one more in the fourth and again in the sixth for the final score. Donegal only managed one hit in the game when Bechtold broke up the no-hitter with a two-out single in the top of the sixth inning. He then advanced into scoring position on a walk by Xavier Cannon, but both were left stranded when Kyle Burger was thrown out at first on a dropped third strike. Noah Karichner got the nod for Donegal and surrendered six runs, four of them earned, on seven hits and stuck out four while also walking four. Small took over in the fifth and also gave up a run on one hit while recording one strikeout and giving up two walks.

Stehman advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Matthew Hoy of Conestoga Valley before losing in straight sets to number four seed Devon Clemmer of Pequea Valley, 2-6, 3-6. McNece took on Conestoga Valley’s Luca Paleo and got the edge in a 6-0, 7-5 win, but fell to Trent McBride of Elizabethtown 4-6,3-6. Austin Hollinger competed in AA flight one, but faced a tough opponent in Tate Fralley of Lancaster Mennonite who came away with the 6-4, 6-3 win. In doubles, Hollinger and McNece entered the tourney as the number four seeded team and earned a bye into Saturday where they faced off with number five seeds Matt Gerace and David DelTerzo of Lancaster Country Day. Yunginger and Stehman, meanwhile, also received a first-round bye to take on the number three seeded team of Jonah Rebert and George Markley, also of Lancaster Country Day. TRACK All good things must come to an end, unfortunately, and Donegal’s unblemished record took its first hit last Tuesday at ELCO. Both the boy’s and girls’ teams were on their way to an undefeated season before the Raiders handed them respective losses of 77-73 and 84-66. In what was a nail-biter, the boys fell just short in their efforts. Despite sweeping the relays and taking three of the seven field events, Donegal only won two of the eight individual races. Cael Rapp came away with not only a win in the javelin, but his throw of 178-8 also marked him as the fourth best in Donegal High School history. Joining him as field winners were Porter Scott who took the triple jump with a distance of 40-1.5, and Matt Brown who cleared 5-10 in the high jump. Only one athlete won multiple individuals and that was Jared Collazo whose time of 11.2 in the 100 and 23.5 in the 200 were best on the track, but it was in the relays that Donegal realized the most success. Ethan Steck, Brock Overlander, Logan Fry, and Ryan Zuch took the 3200 in a time of 9:31, while Collazo, Camden Palmer, Jack Dearborn, and Matthew Jackson won the 400, finishing in 46.2. Collazo and Dearborn also ran in the 1600 with Joe Turbedsky and Aedan Wilkinson, a race that they recorded the top time of 3:44.8. On the other end of the spectrum, the girls cleaned up in the sprints and distances, losing both hurdles, while only winning two field events and one relay. Taylor Nissley claimed all three sprints as she ran a 12.0 in the 100, a 25.6 in the 200, and finished tops in the 400 with a time of 1:00.8. Ella DeBruin won the 800 (2:35.9), Amanda Fry took the 1600 (5:46.2) and McKenzie DuBusky won the 3200 (13:12.9). In the 3200 relay, DeBruin, Keri Anderson, Amanda Fry, and Myra Naqvi finished first with a time of 11:22 while Janelle Brinser’s attempt at 7-6 was successful and netted her a victory in the pole vault, and Aliza Johns’ throw of 89-10 was best in the discus. BASEBALL Donegal picked up two wins leading up to a 7-0 loss to Manheim Central on Wednesday. On Thursday,
