Library will host Kraybill Student Art Show
BY CATHY MOLITORIS“There’s nothing as refreshing as the enthusiasm of young artists,” said Jan Betty, director of children and youth at the Milanof-Schock Library. Head out to the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, on Saturday, May 6, and you can see art created by students. The Kraybill Student Art Show will be held from 10 a.m. to noon and will feature a variety of artwork from students at Kraybill Mennonite School, located in Mount Joy. The library has hosted an art show with students in Donegal School District in the past, Betty said, and during the most recent show of district art, a Kraybill parent suggested including Kraybill students in a show since the school is also in the library’s service area. “It seemed like a great venue to showcase student art, and Kraybill is a great school,” Betty noted.

BY CATHY MOLITORISOne of the goals of Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) is to connect students with others in the community. The Mount Joy nonprofit did just that last month when 11 students performed a piano recital at Juniper Village of Mount Joy, 607 Hearthstone Lane.
“It’s important that we do things like this because relationships like these allow us to get out into the community, to reach out and to showcase what the kids are doing,” said Travis Reish, director of student ministries. “It also gives the kids a goal to strive for with their piano lessons and gives
them confidence to perform in front of people.”
Most of the students chose their own pieces to perform, said Cristina Paden, executive director of REYS. “Some were contemporary, some were traditional or classical, and one student did a song called ‘I Like Bananas,’” she recalled.
The students ranged from second-graders to eighth-graders, and, for most of them, this was their first piano recital. “It was really sweet to see how, at the beginning, the nerves were there, but as the kids started playing and they saw other kids go, and they saw the audience’s reaction, that helped them to loosen up a bit more,” said Claire Reynolds,
communications intern. The students who performed were Marcelina Gendy, Elyse OseiManu, Nina Marion, Daniel Sanchez, Rebecca Sanchez, Josabet Ortiz, Isaac Reck, Anavah Viselli, Natalie Ozorles, Selina Ozorles and Nathan Fischer.
This was the first time REYS has done something like this with the retirement community, Reish noted, adding that it’s a mutual partnership. “Someone from Juniper Village reached out to us and asked if they could bring a couple of their residents to REYS to serve meals to the kids,” he explained. “She mentioned that they had recitals there in the past, and the idea came together for us to
do a piano recital.”
REYS offers piano instruction four days a week at 105 Fairview St., and there are currently about 24 students in the program. All lessons are free.
Reish remarked that the recital was well received by the audience. “The residents really enjoyed it,” he stated. “They were intently listening to a lot of the songs and pieces.” He said it went so well, the organization hopes to do another recital in the future, depending on Juniper Village’s availability.
“I think the kids were really proud of themselves that they had accomplished their first recital,” Reynolds shared. “It was a really great experience all around.”

She worked with Bre Martinez, the new art teacher at Kraybill, who was enthusiastic about the idea of showcasing student art. “This will be her first art show as Kraybill’s new teacher,” Betty commented.
Students in grades three through eight will be displaying works including selfportraits, landscape paintings and collages. From 10 to 11 a.m., some of the artists will be on-site to talk about their work. “We will include comment cards if
Scholarship will support women

anybody wants to tell an artist how much they enjoyed the art,” Betty remarked.
She encourages people to come out and see the creativity of the students firsthand. “We’re just so excited to host the show and hope it will be a yearly occurrence at the library,” Betty shared. “I can’t wait to go through the art show myself.”

The Elizabethtown-based organization is offering a $1,000 scholarship to women who are age 25 or older and who reside in the Elizabethtown Area School District or Donegal School District. This is the fifth year the organization has provided the scholarship, Bard said. “There are a lot of scholarship opportunities out there for high school kids,” she remarked. “This is specifically a scholarship for older women. This is for anybody age 25 or older who has dreams and desires that she hasn’t had time to fulfill.”
To apply for the scholarship, women need to fill out an application, available at the Elizabethtown Public
Library, 10 S. Market St., or on the Elizabeth Hughes Society’s Facebook page. “The application includes a 300word essay that is about the applicant and two letters of recommendation,” Bard stated. “The letters can be from a neighbor, a co-worker, a friend.” Completed applications must be postmarked by Thursday, June 1.
The Elizabeth Hughes Society was established almost 100 years ago with a goal of starting a public library in Elizabethtown. The group currently meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday of each month at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. “We have educational meetings, and we do a lot to support groups that we know will improve life in our community,” Bard remarked. “We are a group of inquiring minds and a group who likes to make a difference.”
She encourages anyone who is interested to come to a society meeting, and she hopes women who are going back to school will consider the scholarship. “Please apply,” she said. “We’d be delighted to support you. And if we can’t give you the scholarship this year, you can always apply again next year.”
The winner will be notified by Friday, June 30. Scholarship payment will be made directly to the winner’s school no later than Tuesday, Aug. 1. For more information, contact Bard at 717-4316254 or bardjudykay@gmail.com.

Eleven hits drive Donegal’s 8-6 win over Spot
BY ARA GRIGORIANThe Donegal Indians had edged the Garden Spot Spartans 8-6 the previous Friday in a LancasterLebanon League road game. On Friday, April 21, the Indians held on not only for their fifth straight win but did so with a close 8-7 defeat of the Spartans.
The Spartans stroked 11 hits on the day. Landen Baughman and Jaden Fabian each had two of those hits. Baughman drove in one run and scored a run. Jaden Fels drove in two runs as did John Phillips.
“It was a nice five-game run,” Donegal head coach Jeff Hartman said. “We showed a lot of character all week, coming back three times.”
The Indians lost 7-0 to the Barons on Monday at Manheim Central. Cayde Connelly started a two-out two-run rally in the second inning. He also slugged a two-run homer in the third inning to pace Manheim Central.
The Barons, who improved to 9-5 (7-2 league) climbed ahead of Donegal (8-5, 6-3) in the Section Three standings for first place.
“We didn’t show up well against Manheim Central,” Hartman said. “We need to flush it quickly.
“The boys are working toward playing our best baseball down the stretch. We talk about having a championship focus. All of our team goals are still there for the taking.”
SOFTBALL
In L-L League softball action, the softball team continued its slugging. The Indians raised their record to 12-1 on the year after defeating Garden Spot 21-0 on the road Friday, April 21, and remaining hot for an 11-5 victory at home over Manheim Central on Monday.
Donegal had 21 hits in blanking Spot. The game ended after three innings due to the mercy rule.
Cara Biesecker had four of those hits, going 4-for-4 with a double, a homer and four runs scored. She drove in three.
“Cara has been our lead-off hitter and the spark plug of the offense all year long and for her whole career,” stated head coach Wayne Emenheiser.
Throughout the batting order there were significant contributions, including Ruth Myers going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in. Esther Myers (4RBI) and Milana Bucks (2RBI) each had three hits and three runs scored, including a triple off the bat of Bucks. Grace Graham, Kara Heidlauf and Natalie Colwell each recorded two hits and two runs while Ruth Myers went 3for-3 with a pair of doubles, driving in two and scoring two runs.
“Our order has been producing all year with speed at the top and bottom and the power in the middle,” Emenheiser explained.
Colwell handled the pitching duties against Garden Spot, recording six strikeouts in a shortened no-hitter.
The potent offense came alive in the bottom of the third inning as the Indians came back from an early 4-3 deficit to put up three runs. The Barons cut the lead to 6-5 only to have the Indians score five runs over the next two frames.
“Manheim Central was a good test for us,” Emenheiser said. “They hit the ball well and have solid pitching.
“We were able to continue our hot hitting up and down the lineup and pulled away in the middle innings,” he added. “Bella Mackison was our big hitter with two home runs and four RBI’s.
“At this time, we have six different girls who have hit homers this season,” Emenheiser added. “That’s a team record.”
Biesecker went the distance, allowing five runs on 11 hits while striking out four. At the plate, Biesecker went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI.
Garber had two doubles and drove in a run. Graham and Heidlauf each slugged a two-bagger also. Esther Myers went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

Eliezer Kabamba joined Rambal, Akiniriwoye and Bonham for a firstplace time of 45.2 in the boys’ 4x100.
Senior Dylan Lenhart won 1,600 and 3,200 while Bistline anchored the 4x800 winning team that included Dominic Santiago-Vega, and Thomas Dohl.
Bonham dashed off with the 100m win while in the hurdles, Brady finished third in both.
Rambel’s 19-8.5 long jump and Overlander’s 12-6 pole vault were both good for first place as were the 139-7 javelin and 45-0.5 shot put distances for Kendig.
Hannah Slobozien was a multiple winner in the girls’ meet, taking both hurdling events. Fernald won the 1,600 and Emma Myers the 800 while Garber, who sprinted to victory in the 200, opened the winning 4x100 team with Brubaker, Mansfield and 100m winner Sophia Floyd.
Rayahna Clerico joined Morant, Brubaker and McKylan Bantum for a victory in the 4x400.
The Indians took nearly all the field events with Slobozien (13-10) taking the long jump, Allison Fry the triple at 27-0, Brubaker the high jump at 4-8 and Claudia Taylor the pole vault (6-6).
Nya Bantum won the javelin (8711) and the shot put (30-8).

A little over a year ago, John Wenger purchased the old Hoffman’s Car Wash, located at 640 Peach Alley in Elizabethtown. He has spent over a year and $1 million repairing, repaving and renovating the facility. He has renamed it Tidal Wave Express Car Wash and Wagging Tails Dog Wash. It is now open for business.
Tidal Wave Express Car Wash and Wagging Tails Dog Wash has been completely refitted with the latest equipment. The facility offers a hot water wash; a touchless wash; a softtouch wash; and four self-serve bays, including a large bay for trucks, RVs, boats and trailers that is 13.5 feet high. Bright lights have been added around the perimeter to allow the wash to be
used safely 24 hours a day.
Two self-serve dog washes have been added, each in its own individual room. Both rooms are indoors in a climate-controlled environment. There is also a separate indoor waiting area.
Wenger is seeking input from his clientele on ways to improve the car wash and dog wash. For example, some customers have asked for a discount for frequent washings, so the facility will soon offer debit cards that can be purchased at reduced prices. Those with ideas are asked to contact Wenger at Care@TidalWaveEtown.com or 717-989-3145.
For more information about the car wash and dog wash, visit www.TidalWaveEtown.com.
