MHALC Offers Mental Health Support By Dayna M. Reidenouer
A lot has been said lately about the importance of physical health as it pertains to the novel coronavirus. However, as people stay confined to their homes or report to jobs where they might be putting themselves at risk of illness, mental health must not be forgotten. “It is just as important to take protective action and precautions for your mental health as you would for your physical health. One cannot exist without the other,” advised Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC). “COVID-19 has
changed the way we think about things. Where we had safety, we have insecurities. We are also conflicted with feeling anxious but also grateful for some of the gifts that we have received as a result of this crisis. The forced series of events and feelings associated with them can throw our equilibrium off.” MHALC’s mission is to promote optimal mental health through advocacy, education, and support, so the organization has stepped up its efforts to help individuals cope with these trying times. “The uncertainty is what’s unsettling,” McDevitt said. “It’s important to remember, in spite of this all, you still have control over
your day-to-day.” Both solitude and unrelenting closeness can be challenges. For people who seek connection, McDevitt recommended video chats with friends and family or calling someone they might not have talked to in a while. She noted that it is valuable to ask three simple questions of someone who might be struggling with loneliness: Do you feel left out? Do you lack companionship? Do you feel isolated? The answers to these questions can help lonely people acknowledge their isolation and begin to open contact with others in a supportive social network. “Research shows that just reaching See MHALC pg 7

Sarah Adams, of Lititz, was 16 weeks pregnant with her son, Davin, when she and her husband, Clark, received heartbreaking news in May 2018. “We found out … that he had a rare terminal condition,” recalled Sarah, who noted that her son’s problems were caused by a genetic condition called Noonan’s syndrome. Neither she nor her husband carries the gene for the condition. In the face of the news, both Sarah and Clark turned to their faith. “We know God can heal, but we know He doesn’t always heal,” said Sarah. “Every week that (Davin) was living and growing and sick, (we thought), ‘Let’s see if we can get further.’” Sarah said the situation taught her how to live in the moment. “I coped by enjoying the time we had, so we had a gender reveal party and a baby shower,” said Sarah, who noted that she has a number of photos from throughout her pregnancy. On Aug. 1, 2018, Sarah noticed she did not feel Davin moving as often as usual. “We went to the doctor, and they did an ultrasound,” said See Our Baby’s Legacy pg 2

psychological, and physical development for girls in third through eighth grades. The GOTR curriculum is designed to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. However, since mid-March, the 1,400 girls in Lancaster and Lebanon counties who were to take part in GOTR this spring have not been living in normal circumstances. Since they are not attending school due to COVID-19 restrictions, they are not able to meet with their coaches and teams regularly after school. GOTR has responded to this situation with two new virtual lessons released each Tuesday as part of the GOTR At Home curriculum. The first See GOTR pg 3

has made it possible for them to honor their lost children. “When you lose your baby, no matter what stage, it grieves you to move forward in your life with them not being a part of it,” she said. “Creating a legacy for (that child) is a way to include them.” At the organization’s website, www.ourbabyslegacy.com, parents can
learn about how to be part of a family group purchasing a CuddleCot for a hospital, find tools of comfort such as the weighted animals, and become part of a supportive community. “(This effort is) how I include my son,” explained Sarah. “I feel he is still very much part of my life because of building that legacy.”

Around the first anniversary of her son’s birth, Sarah wanted to do something special to commemorate him. “I thought I would work to donate a CuddleCot,” she said, noting that raising the funds for the device led her to a revelation. “I wanted to start a nonprofit that included all these tools for comfort.” By including other grieving families, Sarah

Sarah. “There was no heartbeat.” The condition had caused Davin to have hydrops a fluid buildup in areas of the body - that was too hard on the baby’s heart. Sarah’s body was swelling as well from the excess fluid. A vertical C-section was scheduled for Aug. 2. When Sarah was being prepped for the surgery, she asked one of the attending medical professionals how long she would be allowed to hold her son. “She said, ‘As long as you are here,’” recalled Sarah, who knew she would be in bed in the hospital for four days. Following the surgery, her son was wrapped in blankets and brought to her. “It was great to meet him, even though he wasn’t there in spirit, because there was the connection (from carrying him),” said Sarah. “It was such a great experience to have him all day.” Sarah learned that she was able keep her son with her because Women and Babies Hospital has a piece of equipment made in the United Kingdom called a CuddleCot. “I had never heard of it,” said Sarah, who noted that the CuddleCot, which had been donated to Women and Babies by another family that lost a baby, is a cooling device that extends the time parents can spend with a child who has been stillborn or died shortly after birth. “We kept him (with us) for three days,” said Sarah. The availability of the CuddleCot was the beginning of a journey that led Sarah and Clark to found Our Baby’s Legacy, with a mission to “provide families of pregnancy and infant loss with tools for comfort, community for support, and an opportunity to create a legacy for their child.” The CuddleCot was not the only comforting experience to inspire Sarah, whose sister had added weighted beads to a stuffed bunny for Sarah. “There are companies that make weighted teddy bears for people who are grieving, (whether) it’s the loss of a child or another kind of grief,” said Sarah. “There are a lot of studies about how physically holding something weighted helps.” The stuffed bunny now holds Davin’s ashes and a recording of his heartbeat. “It has created this little representation (of Davin),” said Sarah. “I still hold it and travel with it. I include it in photos. It has become a memorial to him.”

GOTR from pg 1 and keep them involved in whatever capacity they can,” said West, who noted that she realizes many of the coaches, who are often teachers or parents of the girls who take part, are still working at some level. “(We appreciate) whatever they can do,” said West. The annual GOTR spring 5K, which is normally held at Franklin & Marshall College in mid-May, will be a virtual event this year. “We are calling it the Virtual GOTR 5K Your Way presented by Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster,” said West, who added that the 5K will be available to complete from Friday, May 29, through Sunday, May 31, and will include various options in addition to running and walking. “We have a bingo card sheet of activities,” explained West. “If (a participant) wants to run the 5K distance over those three days, they can, (but) if they can’t or don’t want to, they can do the different activities on the bingo sheet.” This year’s 5K will be free for those who sign up, but donations will be accepted. “We will email a 5K bib (to those who register) that can be printed out and colored and made their own to wear while doing the activities,” said West.
Interested individuals may register at www.gotrlancaster.org/5k-detail. #GOTRGotYourBack is an effort that GOTR has undertaken to engage the broader community during this time. “It’s our social media piece, which is all about planting positive messages in the homes of anyone who follows us,” said GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “There are challenges (to complete) … and encouraging words. It’s all about bringing our mission to life.” Johnson noted that the organization feels it is especially important to spread a message of kindness. “Just as our 5K is like opening a bottle of sunshine, that’s what we want to be able to do during this time,” said Johnson.

lesson, which was released the week of March 16, is called “We Are Unique; We Are Similar.” The lessons can be completed by a girl alone, but they are designed for all household members. “This is a family, at-home, shared experience,” said GOTR Lancaster program director Jennifer West. “We want to lift up the community and bring everyone together to share in the GOTR experience.” Each lesson includes a main concept called a big idea and an explanation of why that idea matters. Games and discussion questions based on ways to explore the theme are included, along with physical activities. “What we have are called Movement Mixes,” explained West, who said that suggestions might include skipping, running in place, or doing star jumps for a certain amount of time. “Not everybody can get outside (to exercise),” West explained. “(The lessons) are encouraging whatever activity you can do at home.” West said that the lessons are sent via email and text to all the families and coaches each week. “We encourage the coaches to reach out to the families and see how the girls are enjoying the lessons

Brownstown Elementary Student Is Miss Twirlmania By Ann Mead Ash
Julia Rhoads, a 9-year-old, fourthgrade student at Brownstown Elementary School, has been twirling a baton since she was 18 months old. Working with her mother, Wendy Rhoads, owner of Ab-Salute Twirling, and her coach Lisa Hoffmaster, Julia began competing at a young age, being named Miss Majorette of Pennsylvania at a competition held in the greater Pittsburgh area in May 2018. Over Presidents Day weekend - Feb. 13 through 16 - Julia and her family traveled to Disney World in Orlando for the annual Miss Twirlmania competition. There, she competed against more than 10 other girls in the 7 to 9 age group for the title of Miss Twirlmania, which Julia won at the end of the competition. Lisa’s daughter, Kinley, who is a student in the Donegal School District, won first place in the 0 to 6 age group. In the competition, Julia competed in six events: show twirl, solo routine, strut, modeling, basic, and two-baton. The show twirl performance is a routine done to music chosen by the twirler and based on a theme. Julia’s theme was “Magic,” and she performed to the song “Illusion” by Ross Lynch. For show twirl, Julia competed in the 9 to 12 age group. The strut competition involves staying within the confines of a letter X placed on the floor and never releasing the baton. “Strut is more of a dance with baton movement,” explained Wendy. In modeling, the baton is not used, but posture and presentation are judged. The basic event involves marching and maneuvering within a square, and twobaton is performed with two batons and gives the twirler a chance to throw and catch the batons. According to Wendy,
most routines for Julia’s age group last two minutes and 30 seconds. Julia won or placed in several events. She won the two-baton event, and she placed second in show twirl and basic. For the Miss Twirlmania title, she won the modeling competition, and she placed second in solo and strut. The scores for those three events are totaled to determine the winner. “Solo and strut are each worth a point, and modeling is worth a half a point,” explained Wendy. “(Julia’s) combined score was enough for her to win.” Julia said that her favorite part of the competition was receiving a special stuffed animal to go along with the winner’s plaque. “There was a man who was a World War II veteran who collected Disney stuffed animals,” explained Julia, who added that the man donated his vintage collection of Disney characters for the winners. “I got the skunk from Bambi,” said a smiling Julia. Miss Twirlmania is an open, international competition that draws girls from around the United States, including New Hampshire, Mississippi, California, Puerto Rico, and Georgia, as well as from places around the world, such as Nova Scotia and Australia. Julia comes from a line of women who have aspired to twirling feats. Wendy was Majorette Queen of America after winning a competition held in Boiling Springs, N.C., in 1994. Julia’s grandmother Peggy Lacy Steininger was the feature twirler at Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) in the late 1960s and early 1970s. CVHS did not name another feature twirler until Wendy attended high school there.

out and being there for someone can truly save a life,” said MHALC child/family advocate Gretchen Gaudioso. Hugs and even handshakes have been sacrificed for social distancing, and the lack of physical contact can have a real impact. McDevitt recommended snuggling with pets or meditating to achieve calmness when needing touch. Conversely, designating a getaway spot in a house or apartment and then informing cohabitants of a need for space before being overwhelmed may help with too much closeness, McDevitt said. Establishing a routine for all household members ensures that there is order to each day, with time for short breaks built in. It is normal to feel anxiety, but when it persists or there is little to no relief during the day, it can be a good thing to take the mental health screening at www.mhalancaster.org/screening-tools/. If any of the symptoms are persistent or impede daily function, professionally trained MHALC staff members can provide a listening ear or guidance toward more intensive support, McDevitt said. MHALC has extended its hours to meet the increased need for 1-to-1 phone support, and it has created virtual support groups. “We have seen a spike on all of our online mental health screenings, most notably more than 50% increase on our anxiety and depression screenings,” McDevitt reported. More than half of the people
who have taken the screenings have never received treatment. “This could be the first time they have experienced any symptoms or concern for their mental health, or their mental health challenges have increased to the point where they may need support. Everyone is experiencing or is being affected by someone who is experiencing anxiety right now,” McDevitt said. Mental health treatment can be expensive, and McDevitt expressed concern for people who have lost their jobs and medical insurance and are unable to pay out of pocket for mental health supports. She noted that MHALC is currently working on connecting people to assistance. MHALC provides services free of charge to the public and relies heavily on charitable support. Its main fundraising event was scheduled in April and had to be canceled, so McDevitt suggested that individuals may contribute to the Mental Health Sustainability Fund by visiting www.mhalancaster.org/give-back/. A 24/7 mental health and crisis support line has been established for people dealing with anxiety or other difficult emotions. Individuals may call the tollfree warmline at 855-284-2494. Additionally, readers may find resources and helpful information by visiting www.mhalancaster.org/program -services-updates-page-covid-19/ or finding MHALC on Facebook.
