Dark comedy and iconic music are some of the hallmarks of George Furth and Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning “Company,” which Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) will bring to the stage of the Marietta Center for the Arts beginning on Friday, May 10, for its first musical of the 2019 season. The plot revolves around Bobby, a 35-year-old bachelor who finds himself unable to fully commit to a long-term relationship - despite having multiple girlfriends. Josh Schwartz, who will be making his SSC debut portraying Bobby, explained that his character instead gets to see the ins and outs of marriage through all of his married friends. “He seems to live vicariously through his friends over the course of the show,” Schwartz said. “Most of the time he views marriage through a

excited about the fall show, and I think they’re really going to complement each other.” The inaugural spring Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show will take place on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. Approximately 100 exhibitors will fill the stands at the spring show, including painters, photographers, jewelers, potters, woodworkers, and others - representing a range of styles within their fields, from traditional to contemporary and beyond. “It’s a nice eclectic show, and I like that there’s something there for every price point,” Hobday added. “There are a lot of new (exhibitors) coming, and it’s almost fifty-fifty with arts and crafts,” noted Hobday. Some of the artists and crafters will be traveling from outside the central Pennsylvania region to participate in the show, but Hobday emphasized that they all feature handmade work. Showcasing original work rather than reproductions has been of the utmost importance to Hobday for the fall show as well, which has been
held for 31 years and counting. Plenty of food and beverage options will be available for folks to purchase throughout the grounds of Root’s as well. Adding a spring show has certainly come with its challenges, but Hobday is optimistic that the new event will fill a void in Lancaster and hopefully be a hit with the community. “A lot of the spring shows that had been happening aren’t anymore,” she explained. “I’m hoping people will come and like it. We’ve just gotten a lot more artwork than I expected for it being the first spring show.” Promoting the importance of art to the community is a priority for Hobday, who is a watercolor artist herself. She also taught art at Hempfield High School for 25 years. The fall Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show has grown into a two-day event and earned a ranking as one of the Top 200 Best Shows in the Country from Sunshine Artist magazine. The 32nd annual fall Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show is set to take place on Saturday, Aug. 31, and Sunday, Sept. 1. Lyrics, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Scenic Design. Director Jim Johnson noted that, when it opened in 1970, “Company” was groundbreaking as a musical for both its style and the way that it examined adult relationships. “It changed musical comedy in the way that it presented a nonlinear look at marriage for the first time on stage,” described Johnson. Instead of following the previously standard chronological storyline, “Company” is made up of vignettes linked together by Bobby’s birthday celebration. “It’s an examination of marriage - what works and what doesn’t,” Johnson said. “It’s a very thoughtful, provocative musical.” Four of the five married couples that are Bobby’s friends in the SSC show also happen to be portrayed by real-life couples - a fun twist that cast members believe will add extra depth and delight for audiences. “It brings sides of marriage to life that you don’t see in everyday theater,” noted Kent Gable, who will portray Paul alongside his wife, Beth Gable, as Amy. “It’s incredibly relatable for anybody who is married or was
married or is thinking about getting married,” commented Kevin Ditzler. He and his wife, Cara Ditzler, will play Peter and Susan, respectively. Other cast members include Jordyn McCrady as Sarah, Asher Johnson as Harry, Caleb Heckman as David, Chrissy Nickel as Jenny, Deb Good-Zeiner as Joanne, Layne Zeiner as Larry, Ali Fleming as Marta, Kara Hartman as Kathy, and Mikaela Krall as April. “Company” will be choreographed by Jill Gagliano, with music directed by Sharon Boyer. Performances are scheduled for Friday to Sunday, May 10 to 12, and Thursday to Sunday, May 16 to 19, on the Gallery Stage at the Marietta Center for the Arts, 133 W. Market St., Marietta. All performances will begin at 7:30 p.m., with the exception of the Sunday shows, which will be at 2 p.m. Parking is available at the rear of the Marietta Center for the Arts. Tickets for the show may be purchased in advance at www.susquehannastageco.com or by calling 717-426-1277. Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for students.

Honoring Mom Step By Step By Chelsea Peifer
Organizing a successful race takes a village of enthusiastic volunteers, and the members of the Elizabethtown Rotary Club are all set to provide an abundance of cheer for the annual Mother’s Day 5K on Sunday, May 12. Registration and packet pickup will open at
1:30 p.m., with the race stepping off at 3 p.m. in the Veterans Grove area of Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown. According to Rotarian and event organizer Dan Brill, the event is a community celebration of all mothers. All mothers in attendance, whether participants or spectators, will receive a complimentary flower. “Our goal is to honor moms in a healthy and fun way on their day,” Brill said. “We understand it can be a busy day and not everyone can fit it in their schedule. We do keep to a strict schedule and start promptly at 3 p.m. and have all the awards and prizes handed out by 4:15 p.m. so families can still make it to dinner with Mom.” “Last year we had over 100 participants for the first time, and we hope to build on that again this year,” stated Brill.
Brill noted that anyone is welcome to take part in the race regardless of age - and walkers are encouraged to participate as well. Chip timing will be provided. The course winds through the Masonic Village campus, with the start and finish lines at the Veterans Grove area. One water station will be set up along the route, and interested individuals may view the course map at www.elizabethtownrotary.org. Course marshals will stand at major turns along the way to direct and encourage participants. Awards will be distributed to the top overall male and female finishers, along with the first- through third-place male and female winners in seven age categories. Participants will be entered to win various door prizes as well. To register in advance, interested individuals may go to www.appliedracemgmt.com/rotary -mothers-day-5k/. An on-stage presentation will take place at noon.
Parking will be located in the residential area across from Burle Business Park, and a free bus service will shuttle guests from Lancaster Catholic High School and Grandview Shopping Plaza throughout the day. The Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy began in 1990 when a child, Matt, was granted his wish to ride in an 18-wheeler and talk to his sister via CB radio. On the day of Matt’s Wish, more than 40 trucks were in the Convoy. Since then, the event has grown each year. In 2003, 2004, and 2016, the Convoy set the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest truck convoy. For more information or to register as a driver, readers may visit www.wishconvoy.org. Preregistration is appreciated, but drivers may also register at the event. There is a minimum donation for truck drivers to participate in the convoy. Information is also available by emailing convoy@phil adesv.wish.org or calling 717283-4868. Make-A-Wish, together with the community, grants the wishes of children with critical illnesses. Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley has granted more than 6,500 wishes since the chapter’s inception in 1986. Readers may visit www.philadesv.wish.org to learn more.
Clowns were present at a past year’s Mother’s Day Truck Convoy. The 30th annual event, featuring the Convoy and the Convoy Carnival, will take place on Sunday, May 12, at Burle Business Park in Lancaster.

The Last Ride from pg 1 Mount Bethel Cemetery board member Ron Mable will provide guided tours of the cemetery throughout the afternoon. A scavenger hunt for children will also be offered. Hot dogs, popcorn, and other food and beverages will be available to purchase. Folks may also enter to win several giveaways. Proceeds from the day will support the maintenance and preservation of the Mount Bethel Cemetery and its cottage and memorials. Mount Bethel Cemetery
dates back to 1730, and more than 10,000 individuals have been laid to rest in the 10-acre property. Names of members of Columbia’s founding families, such as the Wrights, Blunstons, Houstons, and Barbers, occupy the memorials in the Brick Burial Yard, which is the oldest section of the cemetery. Three mausoleums stand out on the grounds, one of which belongs to prominent Columbia businessman William Fordney Lockard. Moore noted that more than 600 veterans from
the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World Wars I and II, and the Vietnam War have burial sites within the grounds. Four of the five men who were known to be responsible for the burning of the ColumbiaWrightsville Bridge during the Civil War are also buried in the cemetery. Individuals who would like to enter a vehicle in The Last Ride or reserve a vendor space may contact Moore at jmoore1115@gmail.com or 717-575-9760. Gyrofest Will Feature New Greek Pastry By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The name of the event might be Gyrofest, but the anticipated star of the show at the sixth annual event on Saturday, May 11, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 64 Hershey Ave., Lancaster, will be loukoumades. “They’re the most sought-after item at the Greek Bazaar (held in the fall),” said Gyrofest co-chair George Soukas. “They’re crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. We serve them the traditional way. They’ll be freshly fried and drizzled with spiced honey.” Loukoumades are double-leavened, with both baking powder and fresh yeast creating pockets of air

within the dough structure. The sweet glaze on the exterior is what has given loukoumades the colloquial names of “honey balls” or “honey puffs.” They are also known as “honey tokens” because of their history. Soukas related that loukoumades were awarded to athletes at the ancient Olympic Games. Olive oil, honey, and gold were coveted items, and as loukoumades contained the first two, only the rich could enjoy them. Soukas related that 8,000 loukoumades were sold at last year’s bazaar, and he and his co-chair, Manny Firoglanis, are planning to sell 4,000 of the pastries at Gyrofest this year. The honey balls will be available by the piece. Other treats offered at the festival will
include Greek coffee and frappes, baklava and baklava sundaes, butter cookies called koulourakia, and rice pudding, which will be sold with or without cinnamon in 4-ounce and 8-ounce containers. “Cinnamon is a very Greek spice,” Soukas remarked. The main dish at Gyrofest, a pita filled with meat, vegetables, and tzatziki sauce, will be sold in a platter with Greek fries and a salad. The organizers are expecting to sell 3,000 platters. “It’s been a really good event for us,” Soukas commented. “It invites contact with the community and gets our people together to work toward a common goal.” In a nod to Mother’s Day, which will be observed on the day following Gyrofest, event marketer E.J. Schrott coined the phrase “Your mother’s a hero: Buy her a gyro.” Tickets for the platters may be purchased for a discount at www.annunciationorthodox.org/ gyrofest or for full price at the event. The proceeds from Gyrofest will divided, with one-third going to charity efforts such as PowerPacks Project and preschool scholarships. The other two-thirds will go to the church’s operating budget. For more information about Gyrofest, readers may find the Gyrofest page on Facebook or call the church office at 717-394-1735.

Track Teams Regroup, Topple Blazers by Vaughn Brown
Coming off their first loss of the season versus ELCO, both the boys’ and girls’ track teams got over that speed bump and continued in their winning ways in last week’s meet with Lancaster Mennonite. With nine athletes winning events on both teams, the boys came away with a 107-43 victory while the girls triumphed, 121-27. Of the nine boys that earned wins, three of them doubled down on the individual events while in the relays Donegal took two out of three. Porter Scott stood as the only one of the trio to win on the track with a 43.8 in the 300 hurdles to go along with his top distance of 40-0.5 in the triple jump. Matt Brown, meanwhile, won both the long jump (19-0) and high jump (5-4) and Owen Kling was tops in the shot put (41-5) as well as the discus (124-6). Winning in the 3200 relay was the team of Ethan Steck, Brock Overlander, Logan Fry, and Ryan Zuch with a time of 10:15.1, while Kevin Slattery, Camden Palmer, Jack Dearborn, and Aedan Wilkinson ran to victory in the 1600 posting a 55.8. Other event winners included Wilkinson in the 100

hurdles (16.4), Nathan Brubaker in the 400 (36.1), Fry in the 800 (2:08.2), Dearborn in the 200 (24.3), Taj Younger in the pole vault (9-0), and Cael Rapp in the javelin (160-2). Also enjoying a stellar day, the lady Indians likewise posted nine individual event winners as well as one relay victory. Two of the girls who won in the individuals had an even more impressive showing as both Taylor Nissly and Janell Brinser emerged as triple winners. Nissly led a shutout on the track as she swept the sprints finishing the 100 in 12.5, the 200 in 58.1, and the 400 in 26.1 while Brinser won the long jump with a distance of 14-3, traveled 29-0 in the triple jump and cleared 7-0 in the pole vault. Ella DeBruin, Keri Anderson, Amanda Fry, and Myra Naqvi finished tops in the 3200 with a time of Photo by Bob Diller

gles flight and doubles championship concluded last Monday at Conestoga Valley High School with three Donegal players trying to stake their claim. All three advanced into the semifinals as Luke Yunginger competed in the flight four bracket and the fourth seeded team of Austin Hollinger and Nathan McNece enjoyed a first-round bye in the flight one bracket the week prior. Hollinger and McNece opened play against Lancaster Country Day’s fifth seeded duo of Matt Gerace and David DelTerzo and earned their trip to the semis via a 6-4, 6-4 victory. That win placed them opposite the top seeded Brady Burns and Devon Clemmer from Pequea Valley who proved worthy of the high ranking, moving on with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of the Indians and eventually claiming gold as well. Yunginger began his day by taking on Hempfield’s Alexander Cooke in the semifinals round and ended up on the wrong end of a 6-1, 6-1 result. Cooke also went on to win the championship. BASEBALL Looking to be one of the 10 qualifying teams from class 4A to make the District Three playoffs, Donegal helped their cause by winning all

The Indians left no doubt hurdles (18.7), Fry in the 1600 (5:41.5), to begin the week as they posted Sarah Hinkel in the 300 hurdles (53.6), back-to-back shutouts over Garden Naqvi in the 800 (2:30.5), Amaya Spot, 11-0, and Northern Lebanon, Woods in the high jump (4-2), Hannah 14-0, before a tight 3-1 victory over McNece in the javelin (111-10), and Cocalico. Aliza Johns in the discus (91-4). With Brandon Buckius throwing a TENNIS two-hitter through four innings of The Lancaster-Lebanon League sinplay against Garden Spot last Tuesday, the Indians backed him up on offense with 11 runs scored on 13 hits over that span in the victory. Matt Wallace spelled Buckius in the fifth and final inning, surviving two hit batsmen and a walk to retire the side and end the game via mercy rule. Donegal scored six runs in the first inning, four in the third, and one more in the fourth and were led by Xavier Cannon (1-3, 3RBI), Buckius (2-2, 3RBI), Joel Grillo (3-3, 2RBI), and Kyle Burger (3-4, RBI) at the plate. Lighting up the scoreboard in the first, the Indians used a fielder’s choice by Will Small (1-4, RBI), and a single by Zach Leid (2-3, RBI) to go up 2-0 before a two-RBI single by Buckius and a two-run double by Grillo pushed the early lead to 6-0. Reider (1-3) doubled to put runners on first and third with only one out. Sierra Neiss (1-3, 2RBI) then hit a line drive into center field which scored Biesecker and sent courtesy runner Jordynn Park rounding third where another obstruction call against the Spartans, this time at third base, put Donegal up 4-3. More drama ensued in the final inning when, with two outs, Garden Spot put runners on first and second with back-to-back singles. Neiss, who threw a complete game for Donegal while collecting the win, then worked the count to 1-2 against Megan Fisher before making an amazing, back handed snag of a line drive that ended the threat and kept the undefeated season alive. Northern Lebanon proved just as tough of a challenge the next day as the Vikings erased a 4-1 Donegal lead by scoring three times in the third inning to tie the game at 4-4. A fourrun inning by the lady Indians in the fifth proved to be the deciding factor. Northern Lebanon added two more in the bottom of the inning and then scored again in the bottom of the seventh with two outs before Neiss enticed a pop-up into foul territory where Gibbs made the catch from second base to ensure another victory. In the deciding fifth inning, a single by Morgan Creek (2-3, 2RBI), followed by a fielder’s choice bunt by Livelsberger (1-4, RBI), a fielding error, and a single by Gibbs (2-5, RBI) led to the 8-4 Donegal lead. Neiss struck out seven and walked five while surrendering three earned runs on six hits to garner the win. Donegal tallied 16 runs on 16 hits versus Cocalico on Thursday, scoring in all but one of the six innings played. Neiss picked up the win, combining with Jasmine Mann with each throwing three innings apiece. Both Reider (1-4) and Maddy Gohn (3-4) drove in four runs each with Reider connecting for a two-run home run in the fifth.

over the final three including a sixrun second, five in the third and then a final two in the fourth. Three wild pitches in the second led to three runs for the Indians while singles by Cannon (3-4, RBI), Small (1-3, RBI), and Leid (1-4, 2RBI) made the score 7-0 heading into the third where yet another wild pitch led to another Donegal score. That, combined with a single by Burger (1-3, RBI), a sac-fly by Leid, a double by Solomon Myers (1-2, RBI), and a single by Colin Ekinger (2-4, RBI) pushed the score to 12-0 heading into the fourth where another single by Small ended the scoring for the Indians. With only seven hits between the two teams in Thursday’s contest at home with Cocalico, the Indians erased an Eagles’ one-run lead by scoring three times in the second and never looked back as the 3-1 score held through seven innings. Buckius pitched another gem for Donegal, surrendering the lone run on four hits over six innings of play while striking out two and walking only one. Small finished the game by retiring three of the four batters he faced with one walk. After Cocalico converted a Donegal fielding error into an early 1-0 lead, the Indians struck back in the third after both sides went down 1-2-3 in their subsequent at-bats. A walk to Small (1-2) was followed by both Grillo and Leid getting hit by pitches to load the bases with no outs before a sac fly by Myers (0-2, RBI) tied the game, and then a single by Noah Karichner (1-3, RBI) gave Donegal the one-run lead before a Cocalico error allowed Leid to come across for the extra insurance. SOFTBALL Running their undefeated streak to 14, Donegal faced its greatest adversity of the season last week beginning with Garden Spot at home on Tuesday, earning a come-from-behind 4-3 win and then holding on for an 8-7 victory while surviving Northern Lebanon’s own come-back attempt. The lady Indians then opened up some offense on Thursday at Cocalico, winning 16-6. Scoreless through two innings against the Spartans, Donegal committed two costly errors in the third with two outs which led directly to Garden Spot’s 3-0 lead. Donegal answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning when Summer Steffy (1-1) crossed the plate on an overthrow of Emma Miller’s sacrifice and then Cheyenne Livelsberger (1-2) scored on a catcher’s obstruction call when she attempted to come home after tagging on an Aysha Gibbs (0-2, RBI) pop up to center. With the score holding at 3-2 through to the sixth inning, Donegal took the lead when Morgan Biesecker reached base on an error and Steph

Church Will Present Organ Recital St. John’s Episcopal Church, 239 E. Market St., Marietta, will present an organ recital on Sunday, May 12, at 3 p.m. by Dr. Karl E. Moyer. This recital will be the third celebration of significant improvements to the two-manual pipe organ, which was rededicated in 2018. As such, the recital is de-
signed to demonstrate as many of the organ’s capabilities as possible in one program. Four high school violin students, along with Moyer’s wife, Carolyn, will assist in three numbers: a concerto movement by Vivaldi, a song called “The Happy Farmer,” and the first movement of Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins
in D minor, with two students playing each of the solo parts. The violinists will be Vincent Cao, Cecelia Nightingale, and Amaya Williams, all of Hempfield High School, and Naomi Main of McCaskey High School. The second part of the program will be a retrospective on the 1950s, the era when the first per-
mutation of the present organ was installed. Also in the ’50s, Moyer played a recital at St. John’s when he was 13. On May 12, Moyer will repeat one of the pieces he played at his concert in 1950. This part of the program will open with the Toccata and Fugue in D minor by Bach and close with the Prelude and Fugue on the
Come To Our House Of Worship
Name Alain by Maurice Duruflé, a piece that made its first appearance in America in 1956. In between those pieces, Moyer will play music that is not standard organ fare. Co-organist at the church, along with Robert Carbaugh, Moyer is professor emeritus of music at Millersville University, where he taught music history and organ for 32 years. He also was parish organist and choirmaster for three Lutheran churches in Lancaster during those years, retiring from service in 2002. He and Carbaugh have both served St. John’s since 2006.
The recital is free and open to the public. A freewill offering will be accepted to benefit Beth Shalom House, a Christian-based transitional house in Lancaster for mothers who are leaving prison and want to reunite with their children. Stacey Catigano, a deacon-in-training in the Episcopal Church, is a prison chaplain at Lancaster County Prison and is involved with Beth Shalom House. Following the concert, a reception with the musicians will take place in the parish social hall. Light refreshments will be available. For more information, readers may call 717-557-3682.

The NiVan people of Vanuatu, located in the interior jungle regions of a tiny South Pacific island, are one of the groups supported by Friends In Action International (FIA), which has a headquarters located between Elizabethtown and Middletown. FIA supports mission work in areas of limited infrastructure by using construction projects to communicate the Gospel. Last year, FIA hosted nearly 75 volunteers who served as “blue collar missionaries.” Because FIA partners with trained missionaries already on the ground, volunteers offer their life experiences and construction skills to demonstrate God’s love in tangible ways, while national pastors or missionaries share the Gospel in some of the most remote locations in the world. In 2018, FIA volunteers reached more than 200,000 people through 10 projects in six remote locations. Their efforts provided clean water to more than 20,000 West African villagers; medical assistance to 1,200 people in the Amazon jungle; Christian radio broadcasting to more than 200,000 people in Bolivia and Brazil; community transformation projects to 1,400 Rama Cay people of Nicaragua; and discipleship training to almost 3,000 in Moldova, Papua New Guinea, and Bolivia. Paul Brosey, FIA’s project and team coordinator, recently met with Merv Breckbill from Wall-toWall Floor Covering in Strasburg to discuss how FIA and Wall-to-Wall could partner together to impact people physically and spiritually. The business donates financially
