L.H. Brubaker Appliances and Water Treatment, with three locations in Lancaster and Mechanicsburg, is celebrating its 87th anniversary. In 1932, Lester H. Brubaker opened a store providing the sales and service of farm equipment in Strasburg. At that time, the only appliances offered were large International freezers used mostly by farmers. In 1960, Donald H. Frank joined the sales and parts department at L.H. Brubaker. Shortly thereafter, Lester permitted General Electric (GE) to display appliances in the showroom. The first year L.H. Brubaker offered appliances, only 90 sold, but those sales were thanks to Donald. Considering appliance sales not to be a good business decision, Lester informed GE that he had decided to get out of the appliance business. GE countered with a compliment, saying that the manufacturer never liked to end business relationships with a reputable company that paid its bills on time, and it requested that a few pieces be displayed in a corner of the showroom and that Donald be allowed to sell them with the tractors and lawn mowers. Lester agreed. That year, Donald sold 295 pieces, and the following year saw sales of 525 appliances. The sales numbers continued to climb as years went by. In 1972, Donald and his wife, Elnora, bought L.H. Brubaker from Lester, and it became solely an appliance store. Counting the two Franks, the store had 11 employees. The following year, Donald’s oldest son, Donald L.

Fly fishing demonstrations will be happening in the stream, and an electrofishing demonstration is planned for 7:30 p.m. Live musical entertainment will be provided throughout the evening by SongSmith, a Lancaster-based acoustic duo. Attendees may enter to win giveaways for a rain gauge, a
home compost bin, plants, and rain barrels. Gergely noted that Mount Joy Borough will also have rain barrels available for folks to purchase. Preorders can also be made online at www.rainwatersolutions.com/products/ccwa and then picked up at the expo. Gergely noted that the vision for the event is to provide an inclusive educational opportunity for people interested in learning about and protecting the local environment. CCWA will also host a tree planting and stream cleanup that the community is invited to take part in on Saturday, May 18, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Mummau Park, 536 W. High St., Manheim. Signing up in advance is not necessary, but participants should bring work gloves and boots. CCWA will provide supplies for
the tree planting and cleanup. “We anticipate planting between 150 and 200 trees,” said Gergely. “The cleanup will entail picking up any trash found along the steam banks in Mummau Park.” The CCWA is a nonprofit organization driven by local volunteers and community leaders. Its primary mission is promoting good stewardship of the land within the Chiques Creek Watershed in order to protect the Chiques Creek and preserve it for future generations. The Chiques Creek Watershed covers approximately 126 square miles of area beginning in Lebanon County and extending 31 miles to the creek’s confluence with the Susquehanna River near Marietta Borough. Rapho Township from pg 1 Rapho Township was named the roadway winner of the 37th annual Road and Bridge Safety Improvement Awards during the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors’ (PSATS) Excellence Awards ceremony on April 15. The event, which recognized the achievements of townships and their officials from across the state, was held as part of PSATS’ 97th annual Educational Conference and Exhibit Show in Hershey. April 15 was the opening day of the conference, which attracted attendees from every county in Pennsylvania except Philadelphia, which has no townships. PSATS sponsors the statewide Road and Bridge Safety Improvement Contest each year in partnership with the Pennsylvania Highway Information Association (PHIA) and the state Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to recognize townships for their contributions of time and effort in making roads and bridges safer. Rapho Township was honored for completing a road realignment project to improve sight distance and reduce vehicle accidents. The township removed a sharp curve in North Colebrook Road between North Chiques Road and Cider Press Road. Property owners along the stretch had said for years that at times cars ran off the road into their yards. Numerous reportable accidents, including several involving overturned tractor trailers, made this one of the township’s most dangerous stretches of road.
With the donation of a halfacre of land from the owner of a preserved farm and the eventual approval of the county agricultural preserve board, the township was able to get to work. The project design involved removing, reconstructing, and relocating a portion of North Colebrook Road. It also called for the installation of drainage and stormwater management facilities, including roadside swales, storm pipes, and rain gardens. The road crew, with the help of contractors, worked many hours of overtime to be able to reopen the road in four months. The PSATS represents Pennsylvania’s 1,454 townships of the second class and is committed to preserving and strengthening township government and securing greater visibility and involvement for townships in the state and federal political arenas. Pictured on front: Rapho Township officials recently won the first-place roadway award in the annual Road and Bridge Safety Improvement Contest during the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors’ (PSATS) Excellence Awards ceremony. Barry Lynch of Lancaster took first and second place, respectively, in the 85- to 89-year-old division for horseshoes. This was not the first time that Ruby and Lynch had contended against each other for the championship in horseshoes, and yet: “We’re still friends,” said Ruby with a laugh. Neither Ruby nor Lynch practices horseshoes throughout the year, but they both work out regularly at a local athletic club where they are part of the Silver Sneakers program. Ruby remarked, “I just love the people here and the fellowship that we have. It’s all about the people.” To learn more about the Lancaster County Senior Games, readers may visit www.LancSeniorGames.org.

Darts, bocce, and cornhole were among the most popular events, with more than 300 registrants each. Hess, who has been volunteering on the Senior Games committee for more than 20 years, noted that organizers adjust the event offerings from year to year according to what people seem to be interested in. “Every year we tweak something to make it work a little better,” said Hess. For instance, bridge is no longer offered due to waning interest, but now there is a pinochle tournament. Sometimes event demonstrations are scheduled into the week to test the waters before adding something to the official competition list for the next year. New additions for 2019 included ladder golf, a Nook exercise sampler, and Pilates, as well as a rock climbing demonstration with an opportunity to climb. Volunteers begin meeting monthly in September each year to plan and continue the planning process right up until the events launch in May. “To me it’s rewarding, and I think it is to everybody who’s doing it or we wouldn’t be doing it, because we all volunteer,” said Hess. Lititz resident Carl Risser was among the dozens of individuals gathered under sunny skies at Amos Herr Park in Landisville on May 7 for the horseshoes competition. Risser earned first place for the 80- to 84-year-old division and also participated in bocce, ladder golf, shuffleboard, basketball, and the soccer penalty kick. “I love all of the games,” said Risser. “I love water volleyball too, but they don’t have that yet.” Formerly of New Holland, Risser said that it was when he moved into Brethren Village in 2007 that he really became active in recreational sports. He does a lot of running, goes to the exercise room on a daily basis, and has been participating in the Senior Games for at least eight years. Alan Ruby of Akron and

Lady Indians Run Winning Streak to 19 by Vaughn Brown
Finishing out the regular season undefeated, Donegal ended its final two games via mercy rule to extend its winning streak to 19. The lady Indians dispatched Octorara first, winning 14-1 last Monday on the road, and then defeated ELCO 11-1 on Wednesday. A huge, 10-run first inning put the Indians comfortably ahead of the Braves and gave starting pitcher Sierra Neiss more than enough cushion as she collected the win. Neiss went four innings and struck out 10 of the 16 batters she faced while only giving up two hits before Elizabeth Bonitz retired the side in the fifth. Madeline Gohn (3-4, 2RBI) doubled twice and drove in two runs in that first inning, while Stephanie Reider (3-4, 4RBI) and Aysha Gibbs (1-2, RBI) both doubled as well. Donegal added another run in the third and three more in the fourth to secure the win with Morgan Biesecker (2-3, RBI), Neiss (2-3, RBI), Morgan Creek (1-4), Summer Steffy (1-2, RBI), Cheyenne Livelsberger(1-4, 2RBI), and Lauren
Stwalley (1-3) contributing as well. Gibbs drove in two against ELCO while going a perfect 4-4 at the plate as both Reider (1-3, 3RBI) and Neiss (2-4, 3RBI) led Donegal’s offense versus the Raiders. The Indians struck first in their opening at bat, scoring two runs on a Reider sacrifice and a single by Neiss before adding four more in the second, three in the third and one in both the fourth and fifth innings. ELCO scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI triple, only the second hit of the day surrendered by Neiss who finished with 11 strikeouts while walking one. BASEBALL After losing to Solanco last Saturday 9-0, the Indians had no choice but to leave the loss in their rearview as two key matchups remained to finish out the season and determine the final playoff picture. Winning 3-2 over Octorara last Monday was the first step towards making the L-L League tournament as it tied the two teams for second place behind Manheim Central, but the 10-5 victory over the Raiders on
Wednesday was the one that placed Donegal solely in the number two spot and locked them in to the quarterfinals opposite Lampeter-Strasburg. In a low scoring affair against the Braves, it was a two-run third inning for Donegal that broke a scoreless tie, but another run in the sixth gave them the insurance they needed to hold on for the victory. Octorara put on some pressure by scoring in the bottom half of the sixth inning to pull within two and then loaded the bases in the seventh, scoring on a one out sac fly before relief pitcher Will Small forced a pop fly for the final out of the game. Brandon Buckius pitched six and a third innings to earn the win, giving up two runs-one earned-on six hits before Small came on to pick up the final two outs. In all, Donegal tallied five hits and committed two errors on the day. Solomon Myers opened the third with a walk and then stole second after Buckius was out on a pop up in foul territory for the first out. A bunt by Colin Eckinger (1-3) moved Myers to third where he scored on a single
by Drew Bechtold (1-4, RBI). Eckinger then came home on a ground out by Xavier Cannon (0-2, RBI) after taking third on a wild pitch for the 2-0 Donegal lead. Two pitching errors in the fifth allowed courtesy runner David Garner, running for Small (1-3), who singled to open the inning, to advance to third and then score on a single by Zach Leid (1-3, RBI) to increase Donegal’s lead to 3-0 before the Indians held off the Brave’s final push. Wednesday’s contest with ELCO was a closely played one before the Indians exploded for a seven-run fifth inning after gaining and then losing the lead earlier in the game. Small (2-3, 3RBI) began the scoring in the fifth with Donegal trailing 4-3 when he hit an RBI double into center field that brought home Kyle Burger (2-2, RBI) who opened the inning with a walk. Then, with two outs, the Indians put up six more on three straight RBI singles by Eckinger (2-2, RBI), Bechtold (1-4, 2RBI), and Cannon (1-4, RBI), followed by a two-run hit by Small after another Burger walk. ELCO had an opportunity to
get back in the game when they had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but were only able to score once to make the final score 10-5. TRACK It took 11 first place finishes for the Donegal girls’ track team to claim its final win of the regular season against Northern Lebanon last Monday. With the score even at 75-75, the tie-breaking criteria of the most event victories went to the lady Indians as the Vikings only earned seven wins on the day giving Donegal the 76-75 victory. Amanda Fry and Taylor Nissly both won two events for a total of 20 team points in a meet where Donegal swept the individual races while Northern Lebanon won all but two in the field and took two of the three relays. Fry won the 1600 (5:40.9) as well as the 400 (62.6), while Nissly took the 100 (12.1) and the 200 (25.6) with Myra Naqvi winning the 800 (2:28.80), and McKenzie DuBusky finishing first in the 3200 (13:29.7). Alexandra Daly (18.2), and Stephanie Hinkel (51.1) claimed respective victories in the 100 and 300 hurdles
as well. Winning the lone relay for the Indians was Ella DeBruin, Keri Anderson, Fry, and DuBusky with a time of 12:26.9 while in the field Hannah McNece won the javelin with a throw of 110-6 and Aliza Johns took the discus with a toss of 98-0. Winning critical second place points were DuBusky in the 1600 (6:04.6), Janell Brinser in the triple jump (30-5), and Johns in the shot put (98-0) while third place point scorers included Hinkel in the 100 hurdles (18.9), Meg Zell in the 1600 (6:26.5), Julia Piatt in the 400 (67.3), Daly in the 300 hurdles (54.0), DeBruin in the 800 (2:36.5), Brinser in both the long jump (14-1.75) and the pole vault (7-6), Amaya Woods in both the high jump (4-2) and the javelin (81-11), and Ashanti Berry in the shot put (29-8). The boys had much less pressure in their meet as they handled the Vikings 96-54 while sweeping the relays, going 5-3 in the individual races, and splitting the field events 3-3. Porter Scott and Matthew Brown emerged as multiple event winners with Scott winning the

May 22-26, 2019 Dan Brubaker accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at a young age. God began to work in his heart about evangelism as a teenager and eventually led him to Ambassador Baptist College for ministry training. Dan and Elizabeth were married shortly after graduating from Bible college and they are serving the Lord in evangelism today. God has blessed the Brubakers with a young and growing family. night approaches. “It’s overwhelming to see all the talent coming together creating this,” she said. “Watching everyone come together as a team supporting and challenging each other makes us more independent as performers.” Kolby Colmary, a veteran of several Servant Stage shows, noted that he loves that the show goes to nursing homes to reach people who cannot come to the theater. Under Calderon’s direction, the students have become acutely aware of how audiences respond to them. “You have to learn how to adapt how you’re interacting to reach every audience,” explained Isabel Subacz, who serves as dance captain for the show. Brayden agreed, saying, “It’s so fun to see the audience’s faces light up when they recognize the music and sing along.” Performances are open to the public on a pay-what-you-will basis. Wally Calderon is overseeing the Servant Stage production of “Jump, Jive, and Jukebox!” with enthusiasm and energy. Not only is Calderon directing the nearly 30-member cast of teenagers, but he is the choreographer and the person who chose the 20 musical numbers that span the decades from the 1950s to the present and cover genres from rock to pop to Broadway with a special emphasis on the music of the 1980s thrown in. Perhaps, however, Calderon’s most crucial role is that of teacher. “I teach these students how to put all their gifts and talents together,” noted Calderon. “It’s a huge reward to see (students) learn to be supportive of one another … and to see each student rise to the challenge.” Servant Stage’s newest show will be performed in the Good Shepherd Chapel at Lancaster
Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 19, at 3 and 7 p.m. each day. The show has also been slated to be performed during May at several area retirement communities, including Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, Garden Spot Village, Luther Acres, and Calvary Fellowship Homes. More than 80 students tried out to be part of the Servant Stage 2019 season, and Calderon believes the turnout was due to the many young people who were interested in the musical revue that he named “Jump, Jive, and Jukebox!” “It’s a revue of anything you would want to hear when you put your quarter in the jukebox,” explained Calderon. “There’s a lot of variation,” he stated, adding that “Wild Thing,” “Footloose,” and “Do You Love Me?” will be included, along with songs by New Kids on the Block and music from the Broadway hit “Hamilton.” Calderon endeavors to add depth to each number to give audiences more than song and dance. “We find little stories within each song,” he said. “It’s acting first. The song
was written for a reason, so let’s try to tell a story within one song.” The intensive rehearsal process gave the cast members only a week to become familiar with the songs in the show before beginning rehearsals on March 24. “We meet each person where they are and push them a little farther in their training,” said Calderon. “The talent is incredible, and I am just thrilled at what they have been able to accomplish in such a short time.” Students who are taking part in the show are responding to the technique. “I grew up doing dance and theater separately,” said Mackenzie Neff. “Getting to do theater with dancing is kind of a dream. It helps all of us stretch ourselves.” “It’s really challenging,” noted Sydney Norgaard, who wanted to take part in the show after seeing her brother, Brayden, perform in last year’s revue. “Once we’re able to (perform) the number, it is satisfying. Teamwork plays a role in that.” Mackenzie is enjoying watching that process unfold as opening
MERCHANDISER - Donegal Edition - May 15, 2019 - 15
Library Friends Plan Big Book Sale Library have organized the sale, which will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on May 20, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on May 21, and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 22. Low prices have been set for paperbacks and for hardbacks, and some volumes - such as collectible and current fiction and nonfiction - will be individually priced. Prices will be lowered by half on May 22. The Friends have collected more than 1,000 autographed books, heaps of children’s books, a copious quantity of craft books, and an expansive assortment of foreign language selections. Credit cards will be welcome at the sale. Parking will be free of charge. An on-site snack bar will be open during the sale. After a successful sale last year, Mary Armstrong returned as chair of this year’s book sale. She is excited to be back at the helm and leading the volunteer effort. Armstrong believes in the book sale and its ability to provide the library with critical financial support. “Watching the
community come together to support the library and its services will never grow old,” she said. The book sale is recycling at its best. The community donates the books, volunteers process the donations, and book lovers flock to the sale to buy armloads of literary treasures. Proceeds from the sale directly benefit Lancaster Public Library and its patrons. With the Friends’ support, the library can continue providing meaningful and relevant services, resources, and materials to more than 325,000 visitors annually. Very Nice Raw Cream Catfish Fillets Sour 2-5 lb. tubs
the Cadettes found out that the museum’s garden was in need of some improvements, they set about making plans and gathering donations for materials and supplies to update the garden. Troop leader Julie Houck explained that the traditional 18th century Pennsylvania German garden, located behind the museum building, is designed to illustrate to visitors what herbs and vegetables would have been planted in a Lancaster County home garden in 1760. The traditional wood fence surrounding the garden was in need of repair, so the girls - together with help from parent volunteers - took down the deteriorating fence and constructed a new fence around the garden. In commemoration of their efforts, each of the girls’ names is printed on a fence post on one side of the garden. The group also weeded and cleaned up the area and replaced the wooden beams around the raised beds inside the garden. Next steps in the project include planting more herbs and vegetables in the raised garden beds inside the fence. Over the summer, Troop 70595 plans to continue to maintain the garden. Julie noted that the foods grown in the garden are used for hearth cooking classes and demonstrations at the Winters Heritage House Museum. Any plants that are not needed for museum purposes are donated to the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown. By finding and meeting a need in the community, each of the girls will achieve the Silver Award, the highest award attainable for a Girl Scout Cadette. To earn a Silver Award, a Cadette must complete a Leadership Journey badge package and work on a community service project for at least 50 hours. Houck said that the award gives the girls a chance to show that they are leaders who are organized, determined, and dedicated to helping the world around them. The Cadettes taking part in the project are Sarah Ashley, Melissa Beaston, Kate Datorre, Alison Fink, Emma Griffith, Addison Houck, Isabella Messina, Sarah Moss, Molly Myers, and Natalie Ott. Houck said that most of the girls in Troop 70595 are in sixth and seventh grades in the Donegal and Elizabethtown Area school districts. “The hardest part (of this project) is waking up early, because I hate waking up early,” said Sarah Moss, and several of her fellow Scouts agreed. Molly added that getting all the weeds out of the garden at the start of the project may have been the biggest challenge. Some of the girls cited using a nail gun and level and other tools as a highlight, as this was a first-time construction project for them. All in all, “fun” was the buzzword used to capture the Scouts’ feelings about their efforts at the Winters Heritage House Museum. “The dads and moms were a big help,” noted Melissa. Julie noted that in addition to parent volunteers contributing time to make the project possible, local businesses and individuals really came through with generous donations to fund the materials needed for the fence and garden improvements. Troop 70595 has a total of 25 members who meet once a week during the school year. To learn more about joining or volunteering with Girl Scouts, interested individuals may visit www.gshpa.org.
