Supporting veterans in Maytown Bucket list encourages exploration of the region
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
You are invited to explore 55 activities throughout the region, including things to do, see and eat. Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) has created a unique bucket list to highlight activities and places in America’s 55th National Heritage Area.
“In March 2019, York and Lancaster counties were officially designated the nation’s 55th National Heritage Area,” explained Megan Salvatore, visitor service representative for SNHA. “National Heritage
Antique, Art, Craft and Collectible Show on Monday, May 29. The event will take place in and around Maytown Square from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. At 2 p.m. that day, Gutshall will hold a Memorial Day ceremony in the Square.
“At the show, we will have lots of antiques, a variety of jewelry and specialty items, like homemade soaps and essential oils,” Gutshall noted. Plenty of food will be available as well, including breakfast and lunch items. “There will be breakfast sandwiches, hamburgers and cheeseburgers and chicken fingers and french fries,” Gutshall said. “I have a new vendor this year who is selling Colombian fudge, and that is really delicious. We will also have a variety of drinks available. The Boy Scouts will sell sausage sandwiches. I have a vendor selling egg rolls, and funnel cakes will be for sale as well.”

Areas are places where historical, cultural and natural resources combine to form a cohesive, nationally important landscape. It’s obvious why some places are designated as national parks, but National Heritage Areas are more complex. Our bucket list showcases some of the reasons why these two counties have been nationally designated.”
Among the activities on the list are learning about the power of wind turbines at the Turkey Hill Trail Overlook, exploring the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, learning about early science and

At 2 p.m., there will be a brick-laying dedication ceremony in the square, featuring bricks for the nine men from Maytown who were killed in World War II. State Rep. Tom Jones will oversee the ceremony. Pastor Jeff Burkholder will give an invocation and benediction. In addition to bricks to honor the veterans, a brick will be placed to honor K-9 Sarge, who works with Pennsylvania State Constable Paul Castline.

“I would like to invite any first responders to come for the ceremony,” Gutshall said. “And it’s open to anybody in the public who is interested. Come out and help us honor and remember our veterans. It is so important that we honor them, because without their service, we wouldn’t have the freedom that we have today.”

region busy during the pandemic in 2020. The list focused specifically on Columbia that year and then branched out to include the river towns of Marietta and Wrightsville the following year. Last year was the first time the organization launched a bucket list covering the entire region. Salvatore came up with the tasks on the list, noting that they are engineered to explore partners and sites offering a diverse mix of heritage, culture, recreation and refreshments unique to the region. A collaborative effort with the SNHA staff narrowed down the final 55 activities, she said, noting that number was chosen because the region is the 55th designated National Heritage Area.

“There are similar programs, but to the best of our knowledge there is no one that does exactly what we do,” stated Brad Peterson, executive director with Power Packs Project, which delivers ingredients to make a nutritious meal to families in Lancaster, York, and Lebanon counties. Peterson noted that last year, the organization provided nearly half a million meals made up of more than 500,000 pounds of food.
Power Packs was founded in 2009 by Joan Espenshade, who was volunteering at a Lancaster city school when she saw some students lined up to get
breakfast and others visiting the nurse’s office complaining of stomach aches because they had not had enough to eat over the weekend. “We give a recipe and all the ingredients for that recipe,” said Peterson, adding that the costs of the ingredients are included and that a recent meal cost $7.91 to make. “It’s part of our mission to empower families to show them they can create a healthy meal on a budget,” he said. The pack, which usually weighs 9 pounds or less, also includes staples such as cereal, canned goods, and fresh milk.
Originally, the program distributed food to schools in bulk, and volunteers assembled the packs in grocery bags for students. However, with the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, schools were closed, and when they reopened, volunteers were not allowed inside. “We started packing boxes in our warehouse,” said Peterson, who noted that school and church parking lots became pickup sites for parents. The situation changed the Power Packs distribution system permanently. Now, boxes are packed at
new things about the region, using the Susquehanna National Heritage Area bucket list,” Salvatore remarked.
“The bucket list tasks open conversations about our collective past and create fun talking points with visitors to the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center and Zimmerman Center for Heritage. It’s an interesting way for visitors
to understand the national connections this region has woven throughout history.”
A digital version of the list can be found at www.susqn ha.org. Paper copies are also available at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, and the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville.
the Power Packs Project location at 1915 Olde Homestead Lane, Lancaster, for distribution to schools and students each Wednesday and Thursday. The program runs 35 weeks during the school year, and an eight-week summer distribution will begin Wednesday, June 21, and end Wednesday, Aug. 9.
Power Packs runs on volunteer power, clocking more than 700 volunteer hours provided by 475 individuals in the month of April. “We can always use more volunteers,” said Peterson, who noted some volunteers put in as
many as 20 hours a week. The organization has a special need for volunteer drivers to deliver packs to schools and volunteers to distribute at schools. Peterson noted that for those tasks, it makes sense if the volunteers live in or near the districts receiving the delivery and doing the distribution. Current Lancaster County Power Packs distribution areas include a total of 66 schools located in the School District of Lancaster, Warwick, Manheim Township, Penn Manor, Hempfield, Donegal, Cocalico, Columbia, and Lampeter-Strasburg. Most volunteer tasks require about a two-hour time commitment. Distribution and delivery volunteers are needed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. “Packers at the warehouse typically do two-hour shifts but if someone only has an hour, that’s fine,” said Peterson, who added that groups of volunteers have come in during evenings and on weekends. Readers who are interested in volunteering for the organization may visit www.powerpacksproject.org/ volunteer or call 717-517-9220.

Based on the numerous first-place finishes in both the girls’ and boys’ events, the Donegal track and field squads truly impressed at the Battle for the Bridge Invitational, Friday, May 5.
“We had an exceptional night at the eight-team mini invite at Eastern York,” Donegal coach Phil Koser commented. “We took first in nine of the 18 girls’ events and an incredible 12 of 18 events on the boys’ side.”
The runners also went first and second in various events. For instance, in the girls’ 100meter dash Faith Garber and Sophia Floyd were first and second with respective times of 13.12 and 13.20. They thus combined for 18 team points.
Peyton Mansfield was sixth in the spring.
Garber, incidentally, went on to win the 200-m dash in 27.83 seconds while Jayanna Morant finished fourth.
Molly Myers won the 800-m with a time of 2:25.49. She also joined Emma Myers, Kathryn Fernald, and Marleigh Ballard to win the girls’ 4 x 800 relay. They posted a time of 10:11.89.
“Special congrats to the girls’ 4x800 for the meet record,” Koser noted. “Kathryn Fernald’s second place [11:29.22] finish in the 3,200 was the fastest 3,200-m race in Donegal track history.”
Also claiming first for the girls was Hannah Slobozien in the 300-m hurdles. She also took third in the 100-m hurdles, an event claimed by
teammate Addison Houck, and was fifth in the high jump at 4foot-6.
“We started winning a lot of events early in the meet,” Koser continued. “Both the boys and girls won the 4x800 relays. Addison Houck then won the high hurdles and Brody Bonham and Faith Garber each won the 100-m race.”
Dylan Lenhart, Brandon Marcelo, Micah Brydon, and Braden Bistline won the 4x800.
McKyla Bantum took fourth in the 800.
Nya Bantum took the shot put at a distance of 33-6.5. She was also sixth in the discus throws.
Sydney Snyder won the triple jump (32-9) while Slobozien finished first in the long jump.
In the boys’ 1-2 punches you had Chad Rambal and Tim Stehman with measurements of 19-10.5 and 19-7.5, respectively in the long jump. Mark Overlander’s 12-7 was tops in the pole vault. Noah Hinkel’s 11-0 was a tie for second.
“Congrats to Mark Overlander for the second-highest vault in school history, bumping Coach Wittle back to third,” Koser added.
Caleb Kendig and Keagan Cole caused havoc in the throwing events. Kennedy was number one in the javelin. His 143-3 was a far 81 farther than the secondplace distance. Cole took fifth in the javelin and fourth in the discus.
Kendig won the shot put at 45-9.5. Brady Jackson won the 300-m hurdles with teammate
Joshua Leidich taking fourth. Jackson also took second in the 110-m high hurdles with Leidich taking sixth.
“We had so many great performances,” Koser said. Faith Garber, Braden Bistline and Andrew Myers were each part of the three gold medals.”
With Garber winning both sprints and Fernald the 1,600and 3200-m races, Donegal dominated Columbia in a Section Three girls’ meet on Monday, May 8. The Indians won 137-7.
While Myers won the 400 and Slobozien hurdled to victory in the high hurdles, Jordyn Slattery took the 300-m hurdles. Sobozien also came on to win the long jump at 14-5.5.
Bantum’s javelin toss of 942 and 33-9 shot put also highlighted the field events. Mahagony Hunter (82-3) won the discus.
Sydney Snyder, who won the triple jump (32-10) joined Myers, Morant, and Bantum for a win in the 4x400. The foursome of Lucia Angelos, Kara Nissly, Isabella Love and Aveline Bell made off with the 4x800 relay.
The Donegal boys defeated Columbia 121-27 at home on Monday.
Bistline, Marcelo, Nikita Galkin and Andrew Myers took the 4 400. Dominic Santiago-Vega, Cadel Barber, Thomas Dohl Blankenmeyer teamed up for a 4x800 winning effort.
Myers, Lenhert, and Brydon
won the 800, 1600 and 3200 events, respectively. Bonham dashed off with a win in the 100.
Give Kending another shot put win while Brady hurdled to first place in both the 300- and high hurdles. Stehman’s triple jump and Rambal’s long jump also led the cause for Donegal while Overlander won the pole vault.
SOFTBALL
The Donegal offense rolled on, defeating Octorara 16-1 on the road, Friday, May 5. Starting pitcher Cara Biesecker had to only go four innings to make it a complete game, due to the 10-run mercy rule.
