Emerging Businesses Overcome Obstacles Operating a business is a strenuous venture in the best of circumstances, and with the current economic climate, local entrepreneurs are being strained and stretched even more. But that has not stopped some tenacious Lancaster County residents from pushing forward with new or expanding businesses. LaundrE-town on Market in Elizabethtown is one such emerging endeavor. After more than a year of renovation and progress, the fully renovated, modern laundromat was slated for an April 1 grand opening, but state mandated closures postponed the final stages of
completion. The essential business eventually opened successfully on May 1. “ We started construction sometime around September of 2019 and faced many challenges,” explained company president Gretchen Rothstein. “Fast forward to March 20 when the stay-at-home order began, we were just about at completion.” Boasting 10 front load washers, including two extra-capacity units, 10 gas-powered dryers, complimentary Wi-Fi, a television, and change and vending machines, the startup hopes to meet a need for downtown Elizabethtown in a fresh, state-of-the-art facility. The May 1 launch served to
unveil only part of what Rothstein hopes to offer in the future. Such offerings may

Preventing Scams In The Time Of Coronavirus Tests, treatments, and cures for the novel coronavirus are advertised online and even by text or phone call, but those products may only leave buyers with less money and no good outcomes. “Fraudsters prey on public fears during times like these,” said Master Trooper Kelly Osborne, community service and public information officer with Troop J - Lancaster of the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP). She added that scammers often target seniors, and worry about contracting COVID-19 may cause people to make decisions they would not make in other circumstances. Osborne noted that recent scams that have surfaced involve the economic stimulus, claims about products marketed as coronavirus treatments, or the promise of services related to the virus in an attempt to distract someone in order to commit theft or another property crime. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has published a long list of
frauds that have sprung up around COVID-19 and good strategies for avoiding them at www.justice.gov/coronavirus/combattingfraud. “Families can help (loved ones) see that the scammers are there en force and that coronavirus is now a new trigger to alarm potential scam targets,” Osborne said. “Warn them to get any information

Bryanna Still has always loved music. “I began my interest in music at a really young age,” said Bryanna. “I grew up listening to soulful old rhythm and blues and a lot of ’70s and ’80s music. Having that start really inspired me to be passionate about music.” In the fall, the Dayspring Christian Academy senior will head to Edinboro University in northern Pennsylvania to begin a double major in art and music therapy, an ambitious eight-year program that will earn her a doctorate in those subject areas. Bryanna’s journey to this point has not been likely, but her talents, love of art and music, and determination to succeed have helped her discover her potential and have influenced others, such as Diana Vuolo, founder/executive director of SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time), to take notice. SWAN is an after-school music program for School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. Readers who would like to learn more about SWAN may visit www.swan4kids.org. See SWAN pg 3
Bryanna Still of Lancaster, a senior at Dayspring Christian Academy, plans to use her musical and artistic talents to help others as she matriculates at Edinboro University in the fall with the goal of becoming an art and music therapist.

seeking ways to stay afloat in spite of the pandemic, Hush Money Bikes of Lancaster is an enterprise that emerged to provide solutions in the midst of this unusual season. The cycle shop on North Prince Street in Lancaster city embraces a mission “to build community through personalized bicycle sales and service.” It was already in the planning stages in 2019, but the final impetus to make the company a reality came after the crisis struck. “The governor declared that bicycle repair was an essential service, but many local bicycle shops had already closed,” explained Ted Houser, one of three founding partners alongside Nathan Baker and Chris Caldwell. “Cyclists who relied on their bicycles for transportation started calling our personal phones for assistance. At that point, we realized that we were in a position to help.” The ambitious trio had already laid the groundwork and was poised to spring into action when the need arose. “ We met regularly with a SCORE mentor who helped us to develop a business plan and a budget for the shop,” Houser detailed. “We quickly adapted our plan for these uncertain times and stepped forward to support cyclists.” SCORE, a nonprofit association of business counselors with a mission to support small businesses, has approximately 80 volunteers working with clients in the Lancaster and Lebanon areas. During unprecedented closures, SCORE has played a vital role in the health of both existing and new small business ventures. “We have been helping our clients to navigate federal, state, and local loan and unemployment programs,” explained certified SCORE mentor Joann Brayman. “We are engaging our clients to evaluate their business models to see what will work under the emerging guidelines for reopening busi-

community. While the new location was placed on hold, the home base incorporated new procedures, including an online ordering app implemented earlier this year and a contactless pickup window. The Lancaster city location has recently opened for online ordering and takeout, featuring a new menu that retains New Holland favorites and the company’s signature house-roasted coffee. “Our shop will have a similar design style to our New Holland location with a modern, unique twist,” Fisher said. Uncertainty might be at an all-time high, but rising to the challenge and caring for the community is at the heart of these and countless other local businesses that are pushing forward to bring brighter days to Lancaster County.

know we are thinking about them and missing our normal interactions at the taproom,” explained Shirey. “They can still purchase beer and food from us on a takeout basis in Ephrata or purchase our products throughout Lancaster County.” Another local favorite that needed to make adjustments was New Holland Coffee Company. With an existing location on West Main Street in New Holland, the house-roasted coffee hotspot had anticipated to burst onto the Lancaster city scene with a second location on East King Street, but received the call to close just four days before its projected opening. “We are so grateful for our new staff that (was) so patient in waiting to open during these uncertain times,” praised owner Mark Fisher, also expressing gratitude for the support of the

nesses. In many cases, they will be looking at new safety measures, new types of products, or even new customers.” Mentoring provided through SCORE is free, noted Brayman. For Hush Money Bikes, adhering to new health guidelines and restrictions means meeting sales and service needs by appointment only, with purchases made at www.hushmoneybikes.com or by calling 717-723-8334. Products may be picked up curbside at the company’s location at 237 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Other local entrepreneurs were on the cusp of expanding already successful businesses. One such example is Tied House, a second venture from the owners of St. Boniface Craft Brewing Co. in Ephrata. The Lititz venue will have ties to and distinctions from the flagship taproom in Ephrata. “We plan to feature our beer, hand-picked Pennsylvania wine and spirits, and a menu featuring locally sourced, housesmoked, and house-roasted ingredients,” described Dain Shirey, co-owner of both establishments. Although the original plans had aimed at a May debut of Tied House, mandated closures have delayed the grand opening. With state regulations and uncertainty continuing to interrupt forward motion, the Tied House team will consider opening under a limited to-go menu, a small taste of what is to come. “We’d like the community to

of 2,500 people at the school’s Remember America Speaker Series event featuring Dr. Ben Carson. In the summer of 2018, SWAN held a summer camp, which provided 120 hours of instruction to local children. Bryanna was looking for a productive way to spend her summer, and she became a camp volunteer, assisting the teachers. After the SWAN camp ended, the teachers she had worked with suggested she be hired as a teacher for the SWAN team, and she began leading group lessons at Price and Lafayette elementary schools. Vuolo noted that the teachers were acutely aware of Bryanna’s character and skill. “Her ability to work with traumatized children and their behavioral and scholastic failures convinced me she will indeed be a great music and art therapist someday,” said Vuolo. Bryanna credits her father, Clifford Still, with helping her to develop her interest in art. Clifford was incarcerated most of Bryanna’s life, and he is now deceased. “My dad would send me letters with drawings, or he would ask me to draw something and send it back. That is how I connected with my father,” Bryanna recalled. “I couldn’t sing to my dad, but I could draw for him, and I wanted to practice my art and get better at it. I wanted my art to be an expression of who I was and to really echo my goals in life.” Looking ahead, Vuolo believes Bryanna’s past will affect her future in positive ways. “She is a woman of faith and has chosen to … direct the pain of her life to help others,” Vuolo said. “I have witnessed her tremendous successes such as the many times that she has stepped up ... front of audiences to not only perform, but to be an ambassador and spokesperson for the many children affected by parental incarceration and trauma. Her love for others fuels that bravery.”
Donegal High School held its virtual commencement ceremony honoring the approximate 225 members of the Class of 2020 on June 2. The ceremony began at 6:30 p.m., and community members were encouraged to celebrate with the new graduates at 7:45 p.m. by beeping their car horns, ringing church bells, and sounding other celebratory alarms. Commencement activities will
continue on Friday, June 12; Saturday, June 13; and Monday, June 15. On these dates, DHS seniors will don their caps and gowns and walk across a stage to receive their diplomas while their names are read aloud. The students will have their pictures taken and receive a rose, as is tradition at Donegal graduations. For more information on Donegal School District, readers may visit www.donegalsd.org.

EMU Students Study Abroad A total of 20 Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) students completed cross cultural study in Guatemala and Colombia and at Washington Community Scholars’ Center (WCSC) during the spring 2020 semester. Josiah Kanagy of Lancaster, Jamie Walmer of Mount Joy, and Janessa Zimmerman of Lititz each completed a cross cultural experience in Guatemala and Colombia. Each semester program includes 15 semester hours of
credit taken as five courses of three semester hours each. The experience integrates course content through analysis and experiential learning. Semester programs include locations abroad and at WCSC in Washington, D.C. EMU’s requirement for cross cultural learning provides students with the ability to learn about themselves, learn about another culture or country, and gain experiences that they would not get anywhere else.

While it was not always easy for Bryanna to incorporate music into her life, she found ways to exercise her passion. “When I got the opportunity (I took) music in school,” recalled Bryanna, who listed violin, viola, and recorder among her first instruments. “(When there was) anything to do with hands-on music or singing or performing (offered), I was the first to sign up,” she said. Bryanna attended Price Elementary in SDoL for kindergarten and then moved to Washington Elementary for first grade, where she started playing violin. But from third through fifth grades, Bryanna did not stay in one place for long. “I bounced around in schools. I couldn’t invest myself in a music class, but I started getting instruments of my own,” she recalled, noting that her neighbors on Green Street in Lancaster offered her old instruments to try or practice on. When she was 10, Bryanna started taking violin lessons and participating in rhythm classes through SWAN. After completing a SWAN event at DoubleTree by Hilton Resort in Willow Street in 2013, Bryanna was waiting for her ride and singing along to “No One” by Alicia Keys as it played over the lobby speaker. According to Bryanna, Vuolo heard the singing and was impressed. “Diana came over and said, ‘ We’re getting you (voice) lessons.’ That’s what started my singing career,” said Bryanna. Vuolo recognized Bryanna’s intelligence as well as her talent, and SWAN helped to secure a scholarship for her to attend Dayspring Christian Academy in Mountville. Vuolo recalled that Bryanna’s grandmother, with whom she had been living, died in 2013 shortly before Bryanna was scheduled to sing the national anthem on the pitcher’s mound of the Barnstormers’ home stadium. The 11-year-old bravely completed the task and six months later soloed with the Dayspring Honors Choir in front

In the meantime, Gamut has offered its building to city, county, and state officials for community use should it be needed. Gamut will explore alternative programming options during the shutdown period, including a virtual online Gamut Theatre Summer Academy, master classes in Shakespeare study, and educational resources for teachers to use in their online classes. The company has maintained an online presence since the closure. For example, each Wednesday a different core company member presents a talent, skill, or interest to share with the general public through social media, and
Clark Nicholson adds a new chapter each week to “How We Came to Run the Gamut” published at www.gamuttheatre.org. Gamut is planning for the 2020-21 season with an eye toward minimal expense and maximum safety for all participants, whether actors, students, or patrons. Gamut Theatre is the combined theater company of Popcorn Hat Players, Children’s Theatre and Harrisburg Shakespeare Company. Gamut’s mission is to tell classic stories in new and exciting ways. The mentors of SCORE Chapter 16 responded swiftly to the COVID-19 crisis, which closed all nonessential businesses in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. An idea that was created from an offer of co-mentor support by SCORE mentor Steve Darby was later augmented through the talents of mentor subject matter experts Lou Davenport and Rich Bidgood. This led to the creation of a COVID-19 Emergency Funding Mentor Support Team which was able to respond quickly and effectively to both existing clients and a steady stream of new ones.
In the month of April, the volunteer mentors of SCORE Chapter 16 offered expert guidance to clients in the small business and nonprofit communities. The chapter noted that total mentoring sessions more than doubled over those of April 2019; the number of established businesses mentored increased by 62%; eight new volunteer mentors were added in April; and Chapter 16 responded to 54 new mentor requests in April. In addition to Darby, Davenport and Bidgood, the COVID-19 Emergency Funding Mentor Support Team includes Patrick
Kameen, Kevin Saint-Cyr, William Regitz, Thomas Murphy, Keith Landis, Jim Frey, Fred Engle, Eric Parker, Hugh MacMaster, Hal Ranck, David Diffenderffer, Karen Shenk, Michael Schwartz. For information about the latest round of the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) funding, readers may contact their current SCORE mentor or request a mentor by visiting https://core.score.org and looking for Mentoring under Business Advice. about ‘medical breakthroughs’ from either the World Health Organization (WHO) or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Daily updates get posted with truthful information on these sites.” Osborne offered four tips that can be useful in protecting an individual from a scam. -Never accept an online offer for a coronavirus vaccine. “We don’t have one, and if we did, our own doctors would offer it,” Osborne said. -Never click on any link from an unfamiliar source, as that is the primary way that scammers are able to install malware or viruses on a computer. The DOJ also recently announced that malicious sites have been masquerading as public health organizations, such as the American Red Cross, or have tried to trick people into providing bank account details, so even links from trusted email senders should be verified before clicking. -Do not buy masks, medicines, sprays, or other products purporting to protect against the coronavirus. The CDC has said that cloth masks may be helpful in preventing the spread of COVID-19, and handmade masks are acceptable for compliance with Pennsylvania’s shutdown regulation that masks must be worn in public and in the workplace. However, Product Safety and
Consulting Services owner Misty Henry stressed that cloth masks have not been tested according to FDA or National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health standards to prove prevention or mitigation of virus transmission. -Do not accept any offers that require investment in any security that purports to provide a breakthrough treatment, cure, or vaccine against the coronavirus. “The best families can do is keep our aging loved ones informed by alerting them to what is a present danger,” Osborne advised. If someone believes they or a loved one is a victim of a scam, they should contact their local police department or the PSP, if they live in an area covered by the state police, using the respective agency’s nonemergency number. The PSP nonemergency number is 717-2997650, and Lancaster County Radio may be reached at 717664-1180. The latter will route phone calls to the appropriate police department. Osborne stressed that 911 should be called only in the case of an emergency.

Home Cooks Invited To Try Italian Recipe Even though people are unable to travel to Italy at present, they can still create a taste of the country’s cuisine at home. Coleen Kirnan and Rhonda Vilardo, the owners and hosts of Tuscan Women Cook, a culinary destination located in the Tuscan village of Montefollonico, want to bring a bit of Italy to home kitchens during this time of quarantine. To this end, they have posted a recipe for bruschetta with tomato and basil. Bruschetta is an Italian antipasto of grilled bread rubbed with garlic and topped with a mixture of tomato and basil. It is perfect for using summer tomatoes for a simple appetizer or side dish. This is a great recipe for an old, but not stale, baguette. Dry the baguette in the oven if necessary. Save any leftover tomato mixture for the base of a tomato soup.

She added that she and Roberts entertained the job seekers while they waited to be interviewed.

Susan Notter of Lancaster, a pastry chef, is one of eight professionals, all from the East Coast of the United States, who participated as a regional team in the Culinary Olympics held in Stuttgart, Germany, from Feb. 14 to 19. The event is an international culinary competition held every four years. The Olympics drew 1,800 chefs from nearly 70 countries. The group with which Notter participated won a gold medal for its display program and placed third overall in the regional team category, taking home a bronze medal. Notter, who has made her home in Lancaster for a decade, has been participating in culinary competitions since 1979. Along the way, she has placed first in prestigious competitions such as the Southern Pastry Classic in Atlanta in 2003. More recently, she earned gold as a member of a U.S. team that competed in the Culinary
Olympics in Erfurt, Germany, in 2016. Growing up in Cheshire, England, Notter often created sweet treats for her three younger sisters. “My parents didn’t buy boxed cookies and cakes,” recalled Notter. “When we wanted something sweet to eat, I had to make it.” Notter soon discovered that she enjoyed baking cakes and organizing birthday parties. Following high school, she worked for a year in a hotel before attending culinary school in Leicester, England, where she earned a degree in hospitality management. Knowing she wanted to specialize in pastries, Notter worked evenings and weekends for a small bakery in Melton Mowbray that focused on European-style pastries. At the age of 19, Notter completed culinary school and moved to Germany to work full time in the pastry field. She was employed by a large bakery that distributed products to 10 of its own pastry stores. For more

than two years, Notter moved between departments, learning how to make decorative items, layered cakes, and tortes. At the same time, she learned to speak German. “People were friendly and welcoming. It was a wonderful experience,” said Notter. From there, Notter moved to Luzerne, Switzerland, to work in chocolate. She created bonbons, bars, and other confectionary treats for four months on a work visa. In 1983, she transferred to Zurich, where she began taking evening classes to learn to work with sugar. The teacher saw that she had talent, and she became his assistant. “We taught people to work with sugar in a way that was very learnable,” said Notter. The pair began competing and teaching in other countries, eventually relocating to the U.S. in 1992. After working for Albert Uster Imports as corporate pastry chef, Notter took a job in Baltimore and found a house just over the Pennsylvania border in New Freedom

around 2008. She worked in a variety of positions, including as director of the pastry arts program for YTI Lancaster. She is now employed as a distribution partner with Max Felchlin AG as a U.S. sales professional. For the Culinary Olympics in Germany, the team was required to create a five-course menu, four different finger foods, three appetizer plates, four plated desserts, and four petit fours. Notter was responsible for the desserts and the petit fours. Notter noted that the competition was steep. “The national teams from Norway, Sweden, and Finland really dominated,” said Notter, who lauded the team from Switzerland as well. “They’re very innovative.” Notter said that in addition to the competitions, she especially enjoys working for Max Felchlin AG, which is a family business that has been producing chocolate for more than 100 years. “We do classes and training for customers and tours of Switzerland,” said Notter, who added that her ability to speak German and her experience with the culture is helpful. “I love being out in the industry, and I am working with some of the best products in the world.” More information about the Culinary Olympics may be found at www.olympiade -der-koeche.com/en.

utilized unconventional designs and paths to production that incorporated local manufacturers and distilleries, which had capabilities of producing anything from hand sanitizer to intubation devices and masks. Members of the hospital’s team visited Letterkenny Army Depot to learn more about its manufacturing capabilities. Typically, the upholstery shop at Letterkenny focuses on production of items such as canvas tents, kitchens and vinyl products. As discussions moved forward and the partnership took shape, Letterkenny shared its mask design for producing cloth community masks. Back in York, a couple sheets of plastic, garbage bags and a rain poncho were used in figuring out a prototype that would allow WellSpan Health to eventually mesh a material design to create isolation gowns. Letterkenny reallocated resources to adequately staff its upholstery shop to begin gown production. While the initial order was to make 70,000 protective gowns, Noll said that there was enough material to support production of at least 225,000. Letterkenny expected production to take six to eight weeks to fulfill the first order, while it provided weekly deliveries to a WellSpan distribution site. Noll added that innovative thinking and partnering with manufacturers throughout the five counties that WellSpan Health serves can allow the system to be less reliant on the national supply chain and be better prepared moving forward. As potential supply shortages became imminent for WellSpan Health because of COVID-19, leaders within the organization took a proactive approach by fostering relationships to secure necessary resources needed to care for communities and staff members. These efforts included forming a special partnership with Letterkenny Army Depot near Chambersburg. On May 1, Letterkenny started production of 70,000 protective gowns for WellSpan Health to help bolster the local health care system’s supply chain as it continues to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, Letterkenny produced prototypes for cloth face masks for WellSpan Health, which has shared the designs with other community partners. Letterkenny Army Depot has been supporting frontline U.S. military efforts since the 1940s and stepped up to join a much different fight to protect people. In February, prior to its first patient testing positive for COVID-19, WellSpan Health was reacting to supply chain demand as production of personal protective equipment (PPE) in China was diminished due to the country’s battle with the pandemic, and PPE was redirected to U.S. cities already experiencing COVID-19. Meanwhile, John Massimilla, chief operating officer and vice president of administration for WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital, watched a local television newscast in early April that highlighted Letterkenny Army Depot’s upholstery shop, which produced around 4,800 cloth masks to protect its own employees. He wondered if a similar effort or collaboration could help protect a portion of WellSpan Health’s
