World War II codebreaker marks 101st birthday

What’sthe secret to a long, happy life? Don’t smoke, don’t drink and don’t worry. That’s the advice Christine Kriedt gave as she turned 101 on May 21, although the resident of Paramount Senior Living in Maytown admits she has done all three things in moderation. Christine added that she doesn’t feel like she’s more than 100 years old, noting that she gets tired, but she got tired when she was 60.

Christine celebrated her birthday with her son, David, who also lives at Paramount, and her daughter, Wendy, and son-in-law, Gary.

Born in England, Christine was 17 on Sept. 3, 1939, when Britain entered World War II. She had recently graduated from an all-girls boarding school and got a job doing secret work for the Foreign Office. Soon, she and

her co-workers were evacuated to Bletchley Park, a mansion with beautiful grounds including a pond and walking paths, away from the bombing in London. Although she was forbidden to tell her family or friends what she did for work, she collaborated with professors from Cambridge and Oxford universities. She was a codebreaker, and the work she did was the subject of the fictional book “The Rose Code.” Although Christine said the work was frightening at times, she enjoyed the people she worked with.

During the war, she met Philip Kriedt and came to the United States with him in 1947, against her parents’ wishes. The couple married in Minneapolis and moved to New Jersey. They were married for 33 years before he died in 1980. In addition to her two children, Christine has two adopted grandchildren.

A lifelong knitter, Christine said she has donated “an awful lot of

things to give to the needy, mostly hats and scarves.” She still loves to knit and read and also enjoys completing word-find puzzles. She makes greeting cards during a bimonthly card-making activity led by a local resident, and she joked that she also likes to rest, adding that she feels entitled to that due to her age.

On the day she was interviewed, Christine got up at 5 a.m. to watch the King of England’s coronation. She was particularly interested in seeing the inside of Westminster Abbey, where she has visited, and where she has heard there is mention of Bletchley Park. She recalled that Winston Churchill, prime minister of England, was pleased with Bletchley Park and came to visit the site during the war, noting, “He came to see us, and I got close enough to have eye contact with him, which was exciting.”

Show

More than 1,000 antique, classic and muscle cars, plus tuners, street rods, motorcycles and scale model cars will be showcased at LCBC Church’s 22nd annual Motorsports Show. The free-entry show will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, at LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road. The rain date for the show will be Saturday, June 17.

This year’s show will celebrate Mighty MOPAR Muscle, featuring a variety of high-performance cars produced by the Chrysler Corporation.

These cars, including rare models, will be spotlighted in a designated parking area.

Additional highlights of the show include information about land speed racing at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats. Drivers and owners who built the unique vehicles will talk about their experiences, including setting speed records of up to 317 mph. Land speed racers Don Gilmore and Bob Dauernheim will lead a presentation from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the west wing auditorium at LCBC Manheim. Speed racers the Iron Dinosaur and TEAM 608 Lakester will be available for up-close viewing.

Thunder on the River

On Saturday, June 17, be prepared for the sound of thunder in Columbia. This isn’t ordinary thunder from a storm, however. Instead, it will be sound of hundreds of engines revving at noon as part of the Thunder on the River event. Hosted by the Columbia Lions Club, Thunder on the River will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. along and around Locust Street and in Locust Street Park.

“It’s going to be a really nice event,” said Grant Shultz, who is organizing the event with Paul Resch. “We have 475 vehicles registered.”

Trophies will be awarded in a variety of categories, including Best of Show and the Barry Doutrich Memorial, named for the local auto service center owner who originated the car show in 2005. “We have about 85 trophies we’ll be giving out,” Shultz stated.

A variety of food vendors will be on-site for the show, including Big Bob’s BBQ and Bricker’s Famous French Fries, as well as food from LCBC’s Café Connections and drinks provided by Kreider Farms. Free face painting and inflatables as well as an R/C racing track will be available for children.

The show is open to people of all ages and to all vehicle types. There is no charge to enter as a spectator or to register a car. Vehicles may be registered at www.lcbcchurch.com /motorsports.

“The LCBC Motorsports Show is a great community event for the whole family,” said Dean Hershey, men’s ministry coordinator for the

Manheim campus and Motorsports Show lead team member. “Everybody loves great cars, motorcycles and just having fun.”

He noted that the show offers a way to showcase both unique vehicles and LCBC as well. “People can come and check out a great show, but they can also get to know LCBC and see what LCBC offers families and the community,” he remarked. LCBC stands for Lives Changed By Christ. It’s a contemporary church with a weekly attendance of more than 23,000 people at 19 locations throughout Pennsylvania as well as online. A variety of food options will be available during the event, including several food trucks and local vendors on Locust Street. “We have a lot of Columbia organizations setting up stands, and we encourage people to eat at restaurants in Columbia,” Shultz remarked, adding that a list of restaurants may be found at https://columbiamerchants.com.

Activities for children will be held at CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health, 401 Locust St. “The Columbia Borough Police will be handing out Hot

Since 2014, the Lions Club has donated more than $43,000 to local nonprofits. Additionally, car show participants are required to donate canned goods for the Columbia Food Bank as part of the registration process for Thunder on the River, Shultz said.

He noted that the day offers fun for the whole family, from adult car enthusiasts to children. “We’ll have music playing all day, including the Kracker Beez band, who will be performing around noon,” he stated.

Alliance Game Night offers fun for all

There’s a whole lot of socializing - and strategizing - happening in the fellowship hall of The Alliance Church of Elizabethtown. Alliance Game Night is held twice a month at the church, 425 Cloverleaf Road, and it’s open to anyone who loves board games.

“We really enjoy this hobby of playing games,” said Jordan Lehman, who helped to organize the group. “You don’t always know who’s into games, and it’s hard to meet people who like to play.” In fact, when Jordan first thought of the idea of a community game night, he reached out to his friend and fellow Alliance Church member Erik Eberz, not realizing Eberz was also a gamer. “I was surprised to find out he liked to play games, too,” Lehman said. “We were like, ‘It shouldn’t be a thing that we’re going to the same church, and we

didn’t even know this about each other.’”

The pair started talking and soon decided to start a game night for others from the congregation. “We felt it on our hearts that we wanted to start something to bring people together,” Lehman recalled. “At first, we wanted to invite others from our church, but then we thought, ‘Hey, we’ve got this big space to play, and we’ve got all these games. Let’s open it up to whoever would like to come.”

They held their first game night in May of 2023, and the group has been going strong ever since. Not everyone attends every session, and that’s OK, Eberz said. People may bring their own games or use games at the church. The fellowship hall makes a perfect setting for the game nights, with lots of room for tables and an adjoining kitchen to serve drinks and snacks.

Game nights begin at 6:30 p.m.

on the second Friday and the fourth Thursday of the month, with some exceptions due to holidays or other previously scheduled events at the church. “We play everything from the basic games everyone has played before, like Sorry, Clue and Monopoly, to things that people might not have heard of,” Lehman shared. “We’re here to cater to everybody and everyone’s interests.”

He emphasized that he and Eberz, as leaders, will hang back and help if people need assistance or invite people to join a game. “You can come with friends, but you don’t need to,” he remarked. “We have people who show up solo.”

Both Lehman and Eberz noted that they love gaming because it brings out their competitive sides while also providing opportunities for social interaction. Along with board games, Eberz also enjoys pingpong, and there are tables set up for that during the game nights as well.

The guys invite anyone who is interested in joining them for their next game night. “There’s just something about getting together with other people, having an actual, real, tangible interaction with them, that you can’t find anywhere else,” Lehman said. “It’s just fun.”

More information, including a complete list of upcoming Alliance Game Nights through December, can be found by searching for “Alliance Game Night” on Facebook.

Host families sought for students

American Home Life International (AHLI), a Christian nonprofit organization that places international students in schools and with host families, is now accepting applications for volunteer host families that

would like to share their faith, family and friendship with a young person from another country. Families are needed to host a student for one or two semesters in the Elizabethtown and Mount Joy areas.

Student to attend Coast Guard Academy

Students, who are ages 15 to 18, come with strong English skills. They may attend the local public high school where transportation is provided by the district, if eligible. Host families are not compensated, but hosts may take a small monthly tax deduction.

Families provide a private or a shared bedroom with one host sibling, three meals per day and a supportive home environment. AHLI provides a local coordinator to support both the student and host family through the experience.

Over the past 30 years, AHLI has placed more than 17,000 students

The United States Coast Guard Academy has announced that Noah R. Rohrer of Mount Joy has been recognized for superior academic achievement and leadership potential. Noah, who attends Donegal High School, has accepted an appointment to attend the Coast Guard Academy and will be sworn in as a member of the Class of 2027 on Monday, June 26.

The United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., is an accredited college educating future Coast Guard officers. The smallest of the nation’s five military service academies, the Coast Guard

from 22 countries in homes across 29 states. Headquartered in Lancaster, AHLI was recently designated by the Department of State as a J-1 Exchange Visitor Program Sponsor for high school students. This government program brings high school students from all over the world to study for one academic year in public high schools. Students live with volunteer host families to encourage public diplomacy and cultural exchange.

Interested families can call 717560-2850 or visit www.amhome life.org/host-families to fill out a homestay form.

Senior Business Expo will spotlight services

There’s a plethora of services and programs for seniors in the Elizabethtown area, and the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center wants to spotlight them. The center will hold a Senior Business Expo on Tuesday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to noon at 70 S. Poplar St.

The event is an opportunity for seniors to learn about local services while also having fun, said Jess Raush, senior center director. “We have such a variety of activities and businesses for each senior to experience,” she stated, adding that various sponsored door prizes will also be available. “We will have several types of businesses that serve senior needs. That includes funeral homes, doctor’s offices, clear caption service, home health agencies and health insurances.”

Along with information booths, the expo will feature Matt Cleveland, who will host the game Family Faceoff. “This game will be happening from 9 a.m. to noon and will be just a drop-in - play for a round or two or play all morning,” Raush remarked. “We will also have various table games to play as well.” Originally, produce vouchers from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture were to be distributed at the expo, but there has been a delay in the delivery of the vouchers, Raush said. If people would like to be notified once distribution dates are set, they may sign up to receive email notification by visiting www.surveymonkey.com/r/Farmers -Market-Voucher-Program.

Raush noted that the senior center took over hosting the Senior Business Expo last year after it had been hosted for years by state Rep.

Field Hockey Camp will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. daily from Monday to Friday, June 19 to 23, at Jane Hoover Field at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), 600 E. Those in kindergarten through grade three will be introduced to the game of field hockey and learn the basic skills while more advanced skills and game concepts are taught to students in grades four through seven. EAHS coaches and players will instruct. Participants will need a field hockey stick, shinguards and a mouth guard; a field hockey stick can be provided for those who do not have one. A Tshirt is included in the fee. Track & Field Camp, for children in third through eighth grades, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 19 to 23 at the track at EAHS. This program will introduce children to training for the events, rules of the sport, competitive strategies, equipment both for training and competing and nutritional needs and expectations. Campers will work on

distance, jumping, throwing, hurdles, starts, sprints and relays. A camp T-shirt is included in the fee. Campers will be instructed by Derrick McDonald, EAHS varsity track coach.

Students in grades three through nine may attend Bears Basketball Camp from Monday to Thursday, June 19 to 22, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the gym at Bear Creek School, 1459 Sheaffer Road, Elizabethtown. Led by EAHS boys’ basketball coach Lee Eckert and players, attendees will work on ball handling, shooting, passing, rebounding, post moves and defense. A T-shirt is included in the fee.

Wonderful Wizards, a program by Snapology, will be offered for children ages 5 to 12 from June 19 to 22 from 9 a.m. to noon in the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. Inspired by a popular book and film series about a boy wizard, the program will involve creating a castle, making maps to navigate it, being sorted into houses and more.

Book sale frompg 1

“Our sale is very well organized, so if you’re looking for something specific, it’s easy to find,” Rice noted. “I think that’s why people come back year after year.”

More than 40,000 books will be for sale, with separate prices for hardcover, paperbacks and children’s books, as well as a section for specially priced items. Along with books of every genre, the sale will feature DVDs and CDs. A concession stand will offer hot dogs, barbecue,

sweets, treats and drinks, all provided by the Friends of the Library.

“We’re set up in the atrium of the high school as well as the cafeteria,” Rice stated. “It’s just so nice in there. There’s plenty of room to browse and spread out.”

The book sale is the biggest fundraiser for the Friends group, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. All proceeds from the book sale will support new materials, programs and equipment at the library. The Friends group is always looking for volunteers to help with the sale and other events throughout the year, Rice said, noting that the group members receive and sort books for the sale all year long. For more information on joining the Friends, contact Cheryl Deck at 717-492-0122. With compassion projects, Love INC seeks to build stronger communities

Something wonderful happens when volunteers put their faith into practice and help others.

At Love In the Name of Christ (INC) of Lancaster County, people do this through “the compassion projects.”

“Part of what we believe is that God calls us to live out our faith and serve,” said Katie Leaman, the communications and donor development director for Love INC of Lancaster County. “We provide resources and opportunities to serve, and we’re able to help the community by listening to their needs. Our goal is to help people with financial needs remain in their homes or make their homes more accessible.”

Currently, Love INC is looking for people in need to help and for volunteers to provide that help for its compassion projects. Many of the compassion projects focus on minor home repairs and additions like yard projects, painting, small electrical fixes and adding handicapped-accessible ramps.

Participants, who must demonstrate specific needs, either physical or financial, are encouraged to reach out to Love INC of Lancaster County. Love INC provides volunteer labor and many of the materials required for its compassion projects.

Participants for Love INC’s compas-

sion projects must also reside in the Warwick, Manheim Township, Manheim Central, Ephrata, Cocalico, Elizabethtown, Donegal and Hempfield school districts.

“Right now, there’s a big push on to get the word out to people who might have needs,” said Leaman. “We’re waiting to help people. We do our best to meet all the calls, but if we can’t, we try to connect people to other resources. When we receive calls, we try to connect local residents with our partner churches in their areas. It’s essentially a mission trip to your backyard.”

Last year, Love INC received between 200 and 300 requests for services as part of its compassion projects. Some 250 volunteers from Love INC’s 32 member churches completed about 100 of those projects in 2022.

“I want people to know that serving is a call for Christians,” said Leaman. “It can be very easy. There are people in need in your neighborhood, and you may not even realize it. Our nonprofit mission is to mobilize the Lord’s churches to serve the community. We partner and connect with churches across the county.”

Making friends through film

In 2018, Hempfield High School (HHS) teacher Matt Binder and Chris Schwalm from Cedar Crest High School were discussing ideas for new media programs in the area. Local schools typically only have one media or journalism teacher per district, so the two brainstormed how they could find a way to unite students across the region.

Binder, who teaches CommTech at HHS, wanted to create an event that would stray from a typical film contest that focuses on students’ competition with each other. “Usually in our field, contests pit school against school. But when students get to college, they’ll need to learn how to work with people who aren’t their friends,” Binder said.

Binder and Schwalm came up with the idea to host a film festival for students and partnered with Elizabethtown College, which agreed to have the event on its campus. The first contest was held in the spring of 2019 and returned last year after taking a break due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students returned to Elizabethtown College on May 22 for this year’s event, which included middle school and high school students from Hempfield, Solanco, Cedar Crest, Donegal, Eastern York and Waynesboro school districts. Upon arriving at the college, the

the local Love INC is a network of 160 Lancaster County churches from 24 denominations. Founded locally in Ephrata 15 years ago, Love INC also engages in missions of temporary housing, elderly transportation and the fielding of other types of calls from the community.

“Some of the early board members saw this need for churches to serve their communities, and they thought this was a good model,” said Leaman. “Over the years, the mission has changed in various different ways. We’ve tried to ebb and flow with the county. We’ve also changed as churches have changed.”

students were divided into groups with kids from different schools and were assigned a prompt that they needed to use to make a video. Certain students in each group were assigned roles such as director or editor.

For the first portion of the day, the groups dispersed across the campus to come up with an idea and find a location to film. While the director and other group members shot the footage, the editors got to tour Elizabethtown College’s communications facility, which includes a radio station, an editing room and television studio. Once the director and company were done filming, they handed the footage to the editors and took their own tour. After about an hour, each group’s editor submitted their group’s video for the contest.

“This is great experience for students to work with people they don’t know yet and to meet new people,” said Tony Mendez, the technology education teacher at Solanco High School. “They’ll have to do this in college, and it was awesome to see them

so excited and working together.”

At the end of the day, the students gathered in the college’s auditorium for a screening of the videos. Some groups created advertisements for items that would be important for one to take to college; others were tasked with making a music video with a part of a song. After watching each video, each student voted on his or her favorite one, and winners were named in the middle school and high school categories. “The main goal was to get students and teachers together at the end of the year by using the subject or hobby they love to bond,” Binder said.

“Since our programs are relatively small within each school district, the kids get to meet and find people like them from other schools.”

“Overall, it was a great day for not only my students, but every student who participated,” Mendez added.
