REYS to offer summer programming

School’s out for summer, and there’s plenty of fun to be found at Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) as the organization rolls out its summer programming.

“ We have a ‘Summer Vibe’ theme this year,” said Travis Reish, director of student ministries. “We’ll have a beach week, shark week, a superheroes week, a Star Wars week.” Summer programming will kick off on Tuesday, June 20, and will run until Monday, Aug. 7.

Marietta Garden Tour will highlight beauty

Thereare treasures hiding in the backyards of Marietta, and you’ll have the chance to explore them during the Marietta Garden Tour. The tour will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 25. It will be held rain or shine.

“Driving by the houses in Marietta, you’d never believe what’s behind those homes,” said Linda Mylin Ross, whose home will be on the tour. “Most of the lots are very deep, and the average person doesn’t see what’s there. You’ll get a chance on this tour to see things you would never see otherwise.”

Eight gardens will be highlighted on the self-guided tour. “This year, it’s spread out from the east end of Marietta to the middle, to the square,” said Karen Sullivan, tour chair. “It’s walkable for anyone who wants to do that,

but it’s also drivable, and we have designated areas for parking.”

Although the tour is only one day, finding the gardens is a yearlong project for Sullivan. “I drive up and down the alleys all year, but especially in the spring and the summer, looking for prospective gardens,” she stated.

couple of surprises.”

Other highlights include magnolia trees, climbing hydrangea, fountains, ponds and garden gates. “This year, the majority of the gardens are at historic homes, and each of those historic homes is unique to Marietta,” said Lauralee Baker, whose own home on the tour was built in 1850. “Every one of the homes has different architecture as well.”

Maker Fest will spotlight creativity

The results of her efforts can be seen in the unique gardens featured each year. Describing her own garden, Mylin Ross noted, “It could be classified as mainly a shade garden, with lots of large, mature trees and shrubs and little pathways, plus a

Along with the tour, a pork barbecue dinner will be available to purchase from 11 a.m. until sold out at the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St. The meal will include a pulled pork sandwich, chips, baked beans, slaw, a dessert and a drink.

Linda Ferich, a Pennsylvania Master Naturalist from the Lancaster Conservancy, will present two seminars on native plants at the Community House during the tour.

Head to the Milanof-Schock Library on Saturday, June 24, and you’ll get a firsthand look at creativity in action. The seventh annual Maker Fest will be held at the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Makers will be set up out outside and inside the library.

“ We have a quite a selection of makers this year,” said Kim Beach, operations coordinator for the library. “We have Vision Key 3D,

who will be running a 3D printer. We have a tattoo artist who will be demoing their work. One of the high school teachers will be throwing pottery.” Someone will be displaying woodworking, and another person will showcase watercolors.

“ We have a magician coming who will show kids how to do tricks and then have a craft for them to do,” Beach said. Library staff members will have a booth demonstrating a Cricut machine and will create an item for people to take home.

Girl Scout earns Gold Award

Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania announced that Sierra Houck from Lancaster County has earned the highest award in Girl Scouting, the Girl Scout Gold Award.

Houck’s project, “Girls Go Green,” focused on addressing environmental issues and teaching girls how they can make a positive impact on their environment. Houck educated young girls by creating environmental-focused badge curricula. She created a website and developed six Girl Scout badges to teach girls ways they can help the environment and improve the world they live in. Her project’s mission will con-

tinue through the permanent availability of her website and its resources online. Houck devoted a minimum of 80 hours to problem-solve, plan and implement her project.

The Gold Award is available to girls in high school who create sustainable change for a community or world issue. The Gold Award process not only enables girls to help their communities, but it can also help girls build professional skills, earn scholarships, build their network and enlist at a higher pay grade if they decide to join the military.

Houck is a student at Donegal High School.

Celebrating history and the river

“Riverfest commemorates the involvement the river towns of Columbia and Wrightsville had in the Civil War,” said Sophia Vayansky, Columbia Crossing River Trails Center program coordinator.

“It’s a really nice opportunity for us to connect to that larger, national story, but also connect to and feature local stories.”

Riverfest will be held from Friday, June 23, through Sunday, June 25. Activities will take place throughout Columbia, Wrightsville and Marietta, all with the goal of highlighting the 160th anniversary of the burning of the bridge over the Susquehanna River during the Civil War.

The weekend will be full of heritage walks, talks, trolley tours and more. “We have an architectural tour premiering this year, and that’s going to focus on all of the different styles of buildings you’ll find in Columbia,” Vayansky noted. Hosted by the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County, architectural tours will run all three days and will leave from the Columbia

Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St.

Also new this year, bus tours will be offered in Wrightsville, featuring actors portraying notable characters from the town’s Civil War history.

Additional tours will include paddling on the river, rides on the Chief Uncas river boat, an iron industry-focused tour and exploration of the Burning of the Bridge diorama in Wrightsville. A river recreation expo will be held at Columbia River Park from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 24, and a Riverfest music street fair will run from 1 to 6 p.m. on Saturday along Front Street in Marietta.

Most of the tours require preregistration, and early sign-up is encouraged, said Megan Salvatore, visitor services representative for Columbia Crossing. “Last year, we sold out of all of our heritage tours, so we made a huge effort to bulk it up and provide more activities this year,” she noted. “We added more activities for kids … to make it fun for the whole family.”

Kids’ activities will include Bucket Brigade Races with prizes on Saturday from 10:15 to 11 a.m. at Columbia River Park.

“There are so many things happening with Riverfest and so many things people have

yet to discover in our river towns,” Salvatore stated. “We want to invite people to rediscover the area or discover it for the first time.”

Vayansky emphasized that although history is a big part of Riverfest, the weekend incorporates both education and fun. “We will be having music, paddle tours, kids’ activities and lots more,” she said. “Even though it’s all centered around commemorating a historic event, it’s also an opportunity to have some summertime fun.”

Ham radio club will host field day

During the pandemic, Robyn Black picked up a new hobby. She became a ham radio operator, talking to people around the country and the world. “It’s just fun,” she said, noting that her sister, Amanda Black, also earned a ham radio license. Now Robyn’s encouraging others to learn more about the hobby at the 2023 Summer Field Day.

The event will take place on the grounds of the Southern Pennsylvania Amateur Radio Club (SPARC), 1715 Breneman Road, Manheim. It will run from Saturday, June 24, through Sunday, June 25.

Robyn noted that events will be happening from noon on Saturday through noon on Sunday, but ham radio operators will be on-site all weekend long. “People sleep over,” she stated. “They stay for the whole time.”

The field day is designed to be a sort of open house for

Programs will be offered for children in grades one through five on Mondays and Fridays. Boys in grades six through 12 are invited for programs on Tuesdays, and programs for girls in grades six through 12 are offered on Wednesdays. On Thursdays, boys and girls in grades six through 12 are invited to attend. All programs are held from 3 to 6 p.m. at REYS, 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy.

“We will be having special guests come in for our kids’ club, including ZooAmerica, who will do a presentation for families in July,” Reish stated.

“Our teens will be going on outings as well, to ice cream parlors and local parks.” Special events, including a pool party, will also be held.

ham radio, with various stations set up to showcase different forms of communication. “We’ll have some guys with a station for CW, which is Morse code,” Robyn remarked.

“We’ll have different stations, and you can get on the radio with a licensed operator. You may even be able to reach people in other countries.” A variety of food, including hamburgers and hot dogs, will be available during the event.

Ham radio allows users to talk with other people without the internet or cell service.

“It’s designed to be an emergency media in case the electricity goes out or the grid goes down and there’s no other means of communication,” Robyn explained. “You don’t wish for an emergency to happen, but when it does, you’ve got to be prepared. Ham radio operators practice. We play on our radios to make sure they are up to snuff and they’re going to work when the need arises.”

“Our summer programming is an opportunity to try and see if you like it,” said Hannah Wheeler, program and communications coordinator.

“You don’t have to attend every week, but you can try it out. Why not come and play games, hang out and meet new friends?” She underscored the need for many families to have places for children to go over the summer.

“A lot of parents still work during the summer, so it’s helpful for parents to know students are getting exposed to a positive influence while they’re at work,” she said.

Reish emphasized that the summer groups serve a purpose beyond just providing fun, with a mission to offer Christian programming in a welcoming space. “We want to be sure kids have a safe

For Robyn, ham radio has offered a way to make new friends. “I love talking to other people,” she noted, adding that she needs nine more states to reach people in all 50.

She also participates with the Parks on the Air program, reaching out to operators in state parks across the country.

During the field day in Manheim, similar events will be happening throughout North America, with more than 40,000 temporary transmitting stations set up in public places to demonstrate how ham radio works. Field day has been organized by the American Radio Relay League since 1933.

REYS will wrap up its summer programming with a Kids’ Carnival on Aug. 7. Featuring games and prizes, the carnival will be open to participants in REYS programs as well as the general community.

REYS will also hold its free backpack giveaway again this year for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, with distribution set to begin on Thursday, Aug. 10. Each backpack will also include school supplies. Registration is now open for the backpacks at https://reys.org/events. The organization is also looking for donations of new backpacks.

Maker Fest will showcase a variety of creative talents.

Even the food at Maker Fest will be creative. Ella’s Sweet Bites will be preparing madeto-order mini pancakes available for purchase.

New this year, the participants will have the opportunity to sell their items, Beach noted. “We had a lot of people who asked in the past if they could buy something, so we decided to let our makers sell if they want to,” she explained. “They are focused on people learning and seeing how things are done, because we still want there to be an educational component to the day, but people

can also purchase items.”

Live music will be featured at Maker Fest, provided by a classical guitar duo. “People are welcome to sit and listen to some music and just relax,” Beach said. The musicians will perform outside, weather permitting.

Maker Fest is all about showing the community what local makers do, why they do it and how they do it, Beach said, adding, “We want people to come out, talk to the makers and ask questions.”

Magician to perform at Zion Lutheran

Over the past several months, members of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, have been exploring various ways people can connect with God, others, and the world around them.

On Sunday, June 25, members will focus on connecting with God through magic, beginning at 9 a.m. in the social hall. The gathering will include a magic show by Zion member Eric Vera.

Vera became fascinated

with magic during his time in Sunday school at Zion when another member, Scott Sullivan, shared magic one morning. Vera was amazed that ordinary people could learn these amazing feats and perform them directly in front of viewers. Using a magic set borrowed from his older brother, Matt, Eric began learning simple magic tricks. Over the years, his interest for magic has grown into an avid hobby.

For more information, call the church office at 717-426-1884.

JLL recognizes youth volunteers

The Junior League of Lancaster (JLL) has announced the two winners of this year’s 2023 Deborah P. Altman Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award: Lauren Leister, an 18-year-old graduating senior from Warwick High School, and Caleb Miller, an 18-year-old graduating senior from Donegal High School. Leister and Miller each received a $1,500 scholarship prize, of which a $300 contribution will be donated by JLL to a charity of each student’s choice. Leister’s chosen charity is Four Diamonds, and Miller selected the Old Line Youth Livestock Foundation.

Leister’s commitment to volunteerism has been illustrated throughout her high school career. She participated in and served as the chairperson of UNITE for Mini-THON Club.

Leister has been an active member of the Lititz Leo Club, and she was also appointed to the National Honor Society (NHS), where she was elected as secretary and was involved in fundraisers for local nonprofit organizations.

Miller’s scholastic accomplishments have included his induction into the NHS, National Math Honor Society, and Key Club. He has also been involved in 4-H, undertaking a project to install cattle gates at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds. He has been a fiveyear volunteer with the Marietta Fireworks Team. Named a member of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Junior Committee, Miller was recently selected as one of 12 youths from Pennsylvania to assist with ensuring the success of the Farm Show.

The annual award is named in honor of Deborah P. Altman, a past president of the Junior League of Lancaster, whose life exemplified a commitment to volunteering, a love of children, and service to the community. The purpose of the award is to recognize young people who demonstrate an exceptional interest and involvement in

volunteerism as well as inspiring their peers to volunteer in their communities. Since the award was established in 1984, more than $48,800 has been awarded to outstanding youths in Lancaster County.

To learn more about the mission of the JLL, including its projects, awards, and fundraisers, visit www.jllancaster.org.
