Working To Grant Wishes Virtual Convoy Scheduled For Aug. 16 In April, COVID-19 restrictions put Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases, in a precarious position. Concern for the children served by Make-A-Wish, who fall into high-risk categories, was of the utmost importance. Wishes were postponed, and the popular Mother’s Day Convoy, which was ready to make a move to the Manheim Auto Auction, was postponed. The convoy is now scheduled as a virtual event to be held on Sunday, Aug. 16.

Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases. While COVID-19 restrictions have made that mission difficult, the organization recently held a giving week that raised nearly $100,000 toward making that goal easier.

In the meantime, Make-A-Wish needed to raise funds, preparing to grant more than 450 local wishes when the organization is able. To make those wishes come true, the organization embarked on a virtual giving week, held from April 22 to 29. Area residents responded positively to the effort, and by mid-May nearly $100,000 had been raised mainly by 18 teams and 66 participants. Dennis Heron, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, said that the organization was “blown away” by the support. “On behalf of the children and families we serve, we thank everyone who donated for their dedication to the Make-A-Wish mission, especially during these challenging times,” said Heron.

PSPCA Offers Pet Food Assistance

The Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center received a grant to help families in need feed their pets. Donations and applications for assistance are welcome.

The Lancaster County Community Foundation in partnership with the United Way of Lancaster County awarded the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA) Lancaster Center a $2,000 grant to assist pet owners in need throughout the region. The funds have been put into action to provide pet food as families face the health and economic impacts of the coronavirus. The PSPCA Lancaster Center, 848 S. Prince St., Lancaster, is working to assist pet families in need and has provided hundreds of pounds of dry food and countless pounds of wet food to its clients. With other area resources shuttered, the PSPCA has worked to ensure that anyone who needs assistance feeding their dogs or cats during this time receives it. To ensure safety of the PSPCA Lancaster staff and the public, all pet food pantry pickups are done without physical contact. Families in need of assistance are asked to email lancaster@pspca.org, after which they will be contacted to determine their specific needs. They will then be given a time to pick up food at the center. The food is bundled and left outside the building with the identifying information of its recipients. See PSPCA pg 2

Clowns gathered for a photo at a past Mother’s Day Truck Convoy, which raises funds for Make-A-Wish. The 2020 convoy has been rescheduled as a virtual event on Aug. 16. On May 9, Make-A-Wish announced that the decision to turn the convoy into a virtual event had been made by staff and volunteer convoy planning committee members, and that the August date had been set. The decision was based on concern for the Make-AWish children and the members of the

community who visit the event. No carnival will be held; however, a modified small truck convoy featuring the top 30 drivers and key sponsors will leave the auto auction during the day. The convoy will be broadcast live from the Make-A-Wish Facebook page. In addition, organizers are working to create See Make-A-Wish pg 2

“There has always been a need for access to pet food, but through this pandemic that need has increased dramatically,” said PSPCA Lancaster Center site director Lindsay High. “It is always our goal to support families and keep pets happy and healthy in their homes. Through this health and economic crisis, we are more dedicated than ever.” A fund has been created to purchase pet food and essential supplies. Donations will be used to continue the PSPCA’s efforts to provide resources for pet owners in need. Those who would like to contribute may visit www.pspca.org/

communitypetfund. The PSPCA is a nonprofit organization headquartered at 350 E. Erie Ave., Philadelphia. Since 1867, the PSPCA has been dedicated to preventing animal cruelty and rescuing animals from abuse and neglect. The organization’s lifesaving programs for animals include a low-cost veterinary clinic, low-cost spay and neuter services, pet adoption facilities, and the PSPCA Humane Law Enforcement Department. other ways to share parts of the traditional convoy festivities, such as the food, clowns, and carnival games. Readers who would like to know more about the convoy may search for “Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Convoy” on Facebook or visit www.wishconvoy.org. “Our convoy planning committee and volunteers are already hard at work identifying ways to make this virtual convoy an amazing event for our community, our supporters, and especially our Wish families,” said Terry Finch, one of the chairs of the convoy. “Drivers are continuing to raise funds through the new convoy date, and we’re excited about the fun new activities and technology we can use to create a successful virtual event.” In addition to postponing the convoy, the chapter has had to cancel or postpone many other in-person events that raise pivotal funds for wish-granting efforts.

Make-A-Wish counts on the local community, especially truck drivers to make the rescheduled virtual convoy a success. Funds raised by the convoy have supported more than 75% of wishes granted to area children each year. Make-A-Wish hopes that area residents will continue to support the organization during this critical time because the longer the COVID-19 safety precautions are in place, the larger the number of local children waiting for wishes will continue to grow. Community support is vital as the organization looks to safely grant wishes involving travel or large gatherings. Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley first began granting wishes in 1986. The Make-AWish organization grants a wish to a critically ill child approximately every 34 minutes. 17 West Elizabeth St., Maytown, PA 17550 Located across from the Maytown Church of God

Amid starting a new nursing job in York, volunteering at a community health center in Elizabethtown, and running an international medical ministry, Wegayhu Ketema found time to cook and freeze 100 pounds of onions earlier this month. Preparing the bulb vegetables is one of the most time-consuming parts of cooking the meals that have funded Siloam Ethiopia, the organization that Ketema and her husband, pastor Demeke Getahun, created to provide much-needed medical care in her hometown of Harar, Ethiopia. Ketema expects to use half of the onions at a fundraising meal on Saturday, June 27, at Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster, 175 Church St., Landisville. The other half is slated for use at another meal in August. Rather than the usual sit-down dinner that Siloam Ethiopia hosts quarterly, the June 27 event will be conducted as a drive-through. Hot food will be available from 1 to 7 p.m. Vehicles should enter the church property on Camp Meeting Road and exit onto Church Street. Individuals who interact with volunteers are asked to wear masks, and the volunteers will be masked as well.

The menu will contain the traditional dishes of doro wat, a spicy stew made with chicken, hard-boiled eggs, onions, and the fiery, red spice blend known as berbere; atkilt wat, a mixture of root vegetables and cabbage; lentils; and split peas. The sour, fermented flatbread known as injera will accompany the meal. Donations will be accepted for the dinners, and the proceeds will be used to fund COVID-19 education in Harar. “It’s really hitting Ethiopia hard, Ketema said. “They’re afraid July and August will be the worst months. In May 2018, Siloam Ethiopia opened a medical clinic that offers free care to the poorest residents of Harar. From there, the organization established satellite clinics in rural schools, and visiting nurses also have begun to provide care in elder homes and neighborhoods of homeless people. “It’s amazing, looking back, how much we have accomplished just by cooking Ethiopian food, Ketema commented. “God is really good. With schools closed, the satellite clinic visits have been suspended, and the nurses are now focusing on the elder homes and COVID-19 education. Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) and Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) at Lancaster have reached an agreement that facilitates the transfer of credits from LCCTC specialized associate degree programs to an EMU baccalaureate degree in leadership and organizational management. It is the first local articulation agreement for the LCCTC that gives its graduates of specialized associates degree programs pathways to a bachelor’s degree in management. Under the agreement, EMU will accept up to 90 college credits earned in completion of an Associate in Specialized Technology (AST) toward the 120 hours required for the Bachelor of Science degree. An EMU enrollment counselor will serve as an adviser to students who plan to transfer credits earned in completion of the ASB/AST degree at LCCTC to Bachelor of Science in leadership and organizational management program. The remainder of the program is designed to be completed in 16 months, with students attending one class per week from 6 to 10 p.m. The LCCTC is a full-service career and technical center dedicated to preparing high school students and adults for careers in the new economy. A full listing of programs is available at https://lancasterctc.edu.

Align Life Ministries (formerly Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services) concluded its 34th annual Walk Run for Life on May 9. More than 200 registered individuals participated in the virtual event and either walked, ran a 5K, or did another form of fun activity to support the event. So far, more than $235,000 has been raised toward the $255,000 goal, and donations and pledges are still being processed. These funds help the ministry provide immediate life-sustaining services to families in need. The organization recently delivered essential baby supplies to a young mother of an infant, and then she enrolled in virtual parenting classes with her client advocate. Next year’s Walk Run for Life will take place on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at The Junction Center in Manheim. Readers may visit www.facebook.com/alignlifeministries to view event photos and www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9ra br-vHCI&t=9s to view the closing video. For more information about Align Life Ministries, readers may visit www.AlignLifeMinistries.org.
