spread the word to other residents at Juniper Village about a new crochet group that would make projects with the purpose of donating them to individuals and organizations in need. The group chose the name Crochet4aCause and has been meeting on a monthly basis in the retirement community’s lounge for more than one year. Residents spend the afternoon together creating a variety of handcrafted items such as scarves, baby hats, and lap blankets that they like to say are made with love and prayers in every stitch. The materials are donated by Juniper Village and the Mount Joy community. This spring, Charlotte Atkins, 89, shared a YouTube tutorial that she had found for ribbon-stitched crosses with the group mem-
bers, and they completed the project using plastic canvas, ribbon, flowers, and plenty of patience - just in time for the Easter holiday. When Provost was a young girl, a neighbor offered to pay her to crochet edges on Irish linen handkerchiefs that ladies from the Masonic Auxiliary were giving out. “I think she paid me 10 cents a piece, and it kept me busy all summer, sitting on the porch,” recalled Provost. She also enjoys knitting, but trouble with her eyesight and manual dexterity in recent years has meant making more mistakes as she works - and fixing mistakes is easier with crocheting than knitting. Atkins got books and taught herself how to crochet when she was in her 20s so that she could make doilies. Now, she and
Provost laugh at how popular those crocheted doilies used to be. “We had doilies under everything,” Atkins said. “And back then all of your dressers had to have a crocheted (cover) on them,” added Provost. “I gave everything (I made) away, and I’m still giving it away now,” said Atkins, who also did a lot of sewing and cross-stitch work in the past. “I’ve done a little bit of
everything.” Erma Halstead, 90, learned how to crochet as a child. “I just enjoy doing it. I love to see the finished product,” Halstead remarked. Juniper Village is a nine-acre senior living campus located at 607 Hearthstone Lane, Mount Joy. To learn more, readers may visit www.junipercommunities.com or call 717-492-9692.

exercises on the section of the Susquehanna River at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center and other excursions down the river to destinations that will require taking a shuttle ride back. The rest of the day will feature on-land activities with Susquehanna Heritage staff members leading activities including water quality exploration, arts and crafts, and games. Participants will also explore the Northwest River Trail. Other potential recreational activities may include bicycling on the Northwest River Trail, geocaching in Chickies Rock Park, and tubing on Chiques Creek. For parents - or campers - who may be a bit apprehensive about the campers paddling on the river, Columbia Crossing manager Hope Byers noted that safety will be emphasized in all activities. Tandem kayaks will be offered for students who may not feel comfortable navigating the water alone, and the campers will have adult guides accompanying them at all times. “It’s a progressive experience,” said Byers, adding that campers will learn skills and techniques before going out on the water. In addition to developing new skills, Scholz and Byers hope that participants will gain an appreciation for the Susquehanna River and become more comfortable on the
water - perhaps making them lifelong river connoisseurs. “We find that kids who do get out on the water (at a younger age) are more likely to get back out there again,” Scholz remarked. To register for SUSQ Camp, interested individuals may visit www.susquehannaheritage.org/programs/susq-camp/ to print an application or they can pick one up at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center. The camp will be limited to 20 campers. Partial and full scholarships are available thanks to the generosity of several Columbia-area businesses and will be awarded on a firstcome, first-served basis as applications are submitted and reviewed. All kayaking and paddling equipment, instruction, and field trips will be included in the set camp fee. Readers with any questions about SUSQ Camp may contact Scholz at 717-449-5607, ext. 2, or ascholz@susquehanna heritage.org. SUSQ Camp is being hosted by Susquehanna National Heritage Area, a regional nonprofit organization that collaborates with local, state, and national partners to connect people to the cultural and natural resources of the Susquehanna River. Susquehanna National Heritage Area is based at the Zimmerman Center for Heritage in Wrightsville and manages the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center. Now, Gingrich is eager to be part of the congregation of Proclamation Presbyterian. “I think the mission statement of Proclamation is really good and balanced - praising God, loving people, praying in the Spirit, and proclaiming Christ - that sounds right on for me,” said Gingrich. Gingrich and his wife, Becky, have one daughter, Joanna, who was born in January. For more information, readers may visit www.proclamationpca.com or call the church office at 717-207-8220.

Jesus Christ and felt called to minister to people in the church,” shared Gingrich. “CBC gave me lots of opportunities to learn and teach, so I’m really thankful to CBC.” He worked at J.B. Hostetter & Sons before he began attending Westminster Theological Seminary in Glenside, from which he graduated in May. “I was enjoying teaching God’s Word and enjoyed ministering in the context of church,” Gingrich said. “I knew that seminary would give me a chance to test out those gifts.”

Gingrich will fulfill the role through May 2021. His duties will include preaching four to five times a year during Sunday morning worship services and more frequently at Proclamation Presbyterian’s evening services, which are held at 6:30 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month. He will also be serving in the church youth ministry. A weekly Bible study for junior and senior high school students meets at the homes of various church members. Prior to Gingrich, Andy Styer served as the pastoral intern for four years. Styer’s wife, Heidi, also served on the church staff part time. Styer is now pastoring a church in Malden, W.Va. Pastor Troy De Bruin explained that one of Proclamation Presbyterian’s main goals is to be a church that plants churches and to have pastoral interns who go out and do that. Proclamation Presbyterian is a church plant of Westminster Presbyterian Church and originally met at Mount Joy Church of God for two years before moving to Florin COB. “We’re really thankful for the love and encouragement we’ve received from both Florin and Mount Joy Church of God,” De Bruin stated. “We’ve learned from them and have really enjoyed having the opportunity to share space with both churches.” Gingrich was valedictorian of the Donegal High School Class of 2010 and graduated from Grove City College with a bachelor’s degree in history and biblical studies. Gingrich is the son of Jeff and Ellen Gingrich of Mount Joy and grew up attending Community Bible Church (CBC) in Marietta. It was toward the end of his time at Grove City College that he first began prayerfully considering pursuing the path to become an ordained pastor. “I was beginning to feel called to preach
