Ride Will Support Veteran Service Canines By Chelsea Peifer

Mount Joy resident Dave Laughman founded Veteran Service Canines three and a half years ago as a way to connect honorably discharged veterans with service-related disabilities with their own service dog - free of charge. Those disabilities may include anything from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to traumatic brain injuries (TBI) or physical needs. “Service animals are amazing tools,” said Laughman, who served in the United States Marine Corps for 12 years and on four deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. “There are a lot of veterans, including myself, who have suffered from PTSD. It’s something that’s been going on for generations.” Readjusting to civilian life can be challenging at best, with unique hurdles to overcome, and Laughman said that service dogs help in numerous ways as

veterans learn to establish a new normal in their lives. “Having a dog that is there to serve you 24/7 is huge,” said Laughman, noting that the loyalty of a dog can be healing. Laughman also said that while many combat veterans may tend to feel paranoid about their surroundings - particularly in large crowds - service dogs can be trained to help ease some of that tension. For instance, the canines are taught to “Cover Your 6,” which means they will guard the area in the six o’clock position, or to the rear, of their handler’s viewpoint and warn the handler when someone is approaching. When it comes to anxiety disorders, Laughman said that service dogs are able to break the handler’s concentration and provide a distraction. Veteran Service Canines has a training facility in York where veterans who apply and are accepted into the program then go to meet and train See Motorcycle Ride pg 9

Hosted by the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC), the duathlon event includes a run on part of the Northwest River Trail and through the streets of historic Marietta, followed by a kayak journey on the Susquehanna River. Competitors will begin at the Columbia River Park, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. Perry Ligon of Harrisburg is one of several competitors who have participated in the duathlon since it began. “This will be my eighth year, and I guess the real challenge for me comes from the river,” said Ligon. “I’m an ultramarathon runner, so I consider the run See Chiques Challenge pg 2

Haldman Mansion To Host Victorian Tea By Chelsea Peifer

Organizer Elaine Jackson likes to describe the annual Victorian Tea at the Haldeman Mansion as an elegant affair. “It’s a really neat event,” praised Jackson. “Some people come from Lebanon and all over Lancaster, so it’s not just local.” The Victorian Tea will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, at the Haldeman Mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge. A high tea will be served on beautiful china in the ballroom. The menu will include grape salad, chilled strawberry soup, ham and apricot sandwiches, cheese-nut sandwiches, chicken tarragon sandwiches, and scones with lemon curd, peach jam, and raspberry jam. All of the food will be prepared by members of the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society (HMPS) and will be served with a variety of hot teas and iced mint tea. An assortment of homemade desserts will also be part of the meal, including Amish brownies, lemon bars, and cheesecake. Entertainment for the event will include live instrumental music. To make reservations for the limited-seating event, interested individuals may call Jackson at 717-426-3794 or 717-283-7740. The deadline to do so is

Tuesday, July 10. There is a fee per person to attend the tea, with all proceeds benefiting the heating fund for the Haldeman Mansion. Jackson noted that once a heating system is installed in the historic building, the HMPS will be able to host events for the public year-round. The historic stone mansion, which was built in four stages and completed in 1811, was the birthplace of Samuel Haldeman, who became a prominent and respected scientist and scholar largely through self-study and made significant contributions in the fields of zoology and linguistics, according to www.explorepahistory.org. Samuel was the eldest of nine siblings. His younger brother Horace served in the Mexican and Civil wars, and their younger brother Paris traveled west by wagon to the California Gold Rush. Free tours of the Haldeman Mansion are offered to the public during open houses on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. The last open house for this year will be on Sunday, Sept. 30. The Haldeman Mansion property is also available to rent for weddings, reunions, and other celebrations.

The Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society, represented by Elaine Jackson, will host its annual Victorian Tea on July 14 at the mansion in Bainbridge. Proceeds will support the ongoing efforts to raise funds to install a heating system in the historic building. For more information on the Victorian Tea and other events at the mansion, readers may visit www.haldeman-mansion.org.

Motorcycle Ride from pg 1 their canine. Each dog receives basic training beforehand, but Laughman said from there the veteran works with a professional handler to train the dog according to whatever his or her personal needs may be. According to Laughman, an added bonus to this setup is that it provides the participating veterans with a welcomed sense of community. “You miss a lot of the camaraderie you had in the military when you get out,” Laughman reflected. “By combining guys in the same setting who are at different levels, they realize they’re not alone or singled out with whatever they’re going through.” The nonprofit organization works closely with the Lebanon and Coatesville VA medical centers and has connected 35 veterans with service dogs since it began. Each recipient has been a veteran from the central Pennsylvania area, but Laughman said he receives inquiries from all over the country. On Saturday, Aug. 11, the community is invited to the third annual Veteran Service Canine Ride, an event where all proceeds will support the work of the volunteer-run nonprofit organization. The motorcycle ride is coordinated by members of the Marietta Legion Riders, Wrightsville Legion Riders, and AMVETS Riders Post 19. “To combine with multiple organizations and across counties like that

is phenomenal,” Laughman stated. The ride will start at the American Legion, 19 S. Gay St., Marietta. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. Kickstands will go up at 1 p.m., and participants will weave through Lancaster County before crossing the Susquehanna River into York County to stop at several locations, including the Veteran Service Canines training facility, which was donated to the organization by a local business. The ride will conclude at the Kreutz Creek Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7045, 341 Yorkana Road, York, for an event that will include a vehicle and motorcycle show, a live band, a pig roast, vendors, and more. MERCHANDISER - Donegal Edition - July 4, 2018 - 11

The Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074 has announced that it has raised $10,000 for Mission 22. The donation was the result of several fundraisers and donations from fellow fraternal organizations like the American Legion in Columbia, which contributed $2,000. The fundraiser was championed by the Columbia-Middletown 1074 Elks veterans service commission

and Sue Zeamer, a veterans service commission member and ambassador for Mission 22. Three veterans started Mission 22 because of their personal battles with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). The organization provides information to veterans to help them heal from the effects of war, to families to help them provide support to their loved ones, and to communities to guide them on how to fight for veterans. To learn more about Mission 22, readers may visit www.mission22 .com or contact the Elks by searching for “Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074 on Facebook or calling 717-684-6851.

Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074 veterans service commission members (from second from left) Bernard Weisser, Bob Nikolaus, Mitch Heim and Sue Zeamer, along with Doug Sigman (far left) from American Legion Post 372, announced that the Elks raised $10,000 for Mission 22. The donation included funds contributed by Post 372.

Anthony and Kathie Eshleman of Maytown have announced the engagement of their daughter, Kelsey L. Eshleman of Marietta, to Timothy A. Carbaugh of Marietta. The bride-elect graduated from Donegal High School in 2004 and from York College of Pennsylvania in 2008. She is employed by the Pennsylvania School Boards Association in Mechanicsburg. Mr. Carbaugh is the son of Ronald and April Ginter of York. He graduated from Central York High School in 2006, as well as from YTI. He is employed by Textron Systems in Hunt Valley, Md. An October wedding is planned.
