Cops and their canine companions
BY CATHY MOLITORISMichael Klock, a patrol officer with Mount Joy Borough Police Department, was scrolling through TikTok one day last year when inspiration struck. “A police department in Florida appeared on my
‘For You’ page, featuring officers assisting in their jurisdiction’s animal shelter,” he recalled. “I liked the concept of helping homeless dogs and saw an opportunity to incorporate my police department in Mount Joy to aid in promoting local rescues.”

This year, students from Donegal Performing Arts won multiple awards at the May ceremony, including Outstanding Play for the fall production of “Clue.” Landis Cramer won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Play for his portrayal of Wadsworth in “Clue.” Additionally, Jered Mackison was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Play for his performance of Mr. Green, and Hannah Slobozien was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Play for her portrayal of Mrs. Peacock. Wilhelm found out in February about the honors for “Clue” and learned of the “Once Upon a Mattress” nomination just weeks before the ceremony. “I was overcome with pride for these students,” she said. “‘Clue’ was my first show directing at Donegal and my first experience getting to know these students and their talents and skills. I’m really proud of them.”
Hannah said when she found out she’d been nominated, she was excited, like all of her castmates. “I screamed and ran around my house,” she recalled. “I half lost my voice.” Her enthusiasm continued

For the past four years, Eugene Williams has been delivering smiles along with packages as a driver for FedEx - and he’s made an impression on customers along his route throughout Mount Joy and Manheim.
“He is such a happy, engaging person,” said Kathy Anderson, who regularly receives deliveries from Williams. “Eugene treats everyone special and makes us all feel like we’re his favorite customer.”
One day earlier this year, however, Kathy and her husband, Dan, noticed something about Williams. “He didn’t seem like his usual bubbly
self, so we asked him if he was OK,” Kathy recalled. “He briefly shared about his situation. He didn’t share a lot of details and wasn’t complaining, but he was clearly feeling burdened. We knew right away that we wanted to help.”
In early June, the Andersons and several of their neighbors, including Kimberly Rudis, surprised Williams with a gift of money; gift cards; a basket of snacks, drinks and treats; and homemade cards created by neighborhood kids.
Williams, who lives in Elizabethtown, said he was completely surprised by the gifts. He explained that he was going through a particularly hard time.

“I’m a single dad with three kids - two girls and one boy,” he said of his children. who are ages 14 years, 9 years and 21 months. He’s also the stepfather of two children, ages 17 and 21. “After I got divorced, it really affected my financial situation. I try to hide my problems, but my friend Kathy is so observant, she noticed something was bothering me through my smile.”
Williams proudly displays the handmade cards in his delivery truck and said keeping a positive attitude has always been important to him. “I grew up really rough,” he remarked. “As a kid, I dealt with a lot of racism. In my teenage years, I dealt with a lot of gang stuff, and in my early adult years, I
dealt with a lot of drug things. I overcame all of that, so that’s why I try to stay positive because I know I can beat anything if I put my mind to it.”
He said he can’t imagine doing anything other than the job he loves and the route he cherishes. “The people on my route are great,” he stated. “They are so generous, and I’m really grateful.”
Williams is also generous. When he learned that someone along his route is in search of a kidney, he volunteered to donate his. The Andersons helped him submit his paperwork, but it turned out he wasn’t a match.

Williams said he hopes others will take inspiration from his story and from his outlook on life. “Try to look on the bright side, no matter what you’re going through,” he shared. “No matter what situation you’re in, look at it with happiness and love.”

at the ceremony. “I didn’t win, but when Landis won, we all freaked out, and when the show won, we were all hugging each other and jumping up and down. It was really cool to be able to represent our school, and it was a really exciting moment for Donegal.”
At the ceremony, all of the nominees performed, Landis said, noting that the venue added to the evening’s excitement. “It was really cool to stand on the Hershey Theatre stage and perform,” he said. He recalled that he had confidence that the show would win. “I think we all did such a good job,” he said, but
Church series to explore the arts
Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, will host a family series, “Connecting With God Through the Arts,” on Mondays, July 10 to 31.
Each week, the activities will begin with a light meal at 6 p.m. Afterward, a Bible story will be shared. The event will end with a handson activity or craft for all to complete. Weekly themes will be built around music, gardening, art, and performance.

he wasn’t expecting to be singled out. “After a I saw the monologues from my colleagues who performed at the awards, I didn’t think I had a chance. When they said my name, for a brief moment I had some confusion, and it took a while for my body to catch up with me. I felt a mixed bag of disbelief, happiness and pride.”
Wilhelm noted that in addition to a trophy, winners received a monetary reward. “Part of the initiative of the program is to give students exposure to scholarships as well, because they participated in the Apollo Awards,” she stated.
Car show and tour will spotlight antique cars
BY CATHY MOLITORISHe may be only 23 years old, but Nick Sieber is an oldfashioned guy. He’s really into antique cars, and he owns several, including a 1930 Ford Model A, a 1928 Buick and a 1940 Buick.
Now he’s inviting other people to share his passion for the vehicles. He’s organizing the Stone Gables Prewar Car Show and Tour. The event will be held on Saturday, July 29, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown.
“There are so many car shows that focus on cars from the 1950s or 1960s,” Sieber noted. “For folks who have pre-World War II or preWorld War I cars, there are not a lot of opportunities. I wanted to give people a chance to take their car out and enjoy it as it should be.”
Unlike other car shows, Sieber’s event is a tour, meaning participants will be able to drive their vehicles through the roads on the property’s 275 acres, offering
rides to attendees.
“People from the general public can come out for the day, ride the 1860s steam locomotive on the estate’s private railroad, enjoy some lunch, tour the Star Barn and just enjoy the grounds,” Sieber stated.
The car show and tour will highlight cars built in 1942 and earlier, and Sieber said he’s been pleasantly surprised by the response he’s gotten from participants. People are driving their antique cars from Maryland, New York and New Hampshire, among other places, and one of the cars dates to 1910.
This past year, Sieber drove his 1930 Model A to a car show in Michigan, where he networked with other car enthusiasts who are helping to spread the word about his Elizabethtown event.
Sieber noted that he’s always been into old cars, starting when he was a young boy. “My maternal grandmother was born in 1923, and growing up, every Sun-
day after church, we’d go back to her house, enjoy dinner and sit and talk,” he recalled. “She would always reminisce about stories of growing up in the 1920s and 1930s. Her brothers had these old jalopies - Model Ts and Model As - and she remembered riding in the rumble seat. She talked so fondly of her childhood, I fell in love with it.”
At 16, Sieber bought his first car, a 1925 Ford Model T. “That started what you could say would be a slight
obsession,” he said with a laugh.
He invites anyone with an interest in antique cars to come out to the car show and tour, noting that it will be a unique event.
“The big draw for this is that it’s a driving show,” he stated. “You’ll get to see and hear the cars running, and you might even be able to take a ride in one.”

The church will hold its annual community picnic on Saturday, July 15, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. It will be held at the Ruhl’s Church Picnic Grove, 2766 Newport Road, Manheim.
“There will be plenty of food available for purchase throughout the picnic,” said Ruhl. “Early in the morning, we will begin preparing our traditional chicken corn soup, following the recipe that has been used for many generations.” Takeout soup sales will begin at 9 a.m.
A full lunch menu will also be offered, including soup,

Klock created K-9 for a Day, a program that began in November of 2022 and features a different dog or two once every three to four weeks.
“We have a great partnership with April Ruhl, owner of Keystone Pet Place in Mount Joy,” Klock explained, adding that Ruhl fosters and trains the dogs to get them ready to be adopted before contacting Klock and arranging a “ride along” with an officer. Even though it’s called a “ride along,” the experience is not quite what you might expect for an official K9 officer, Klock emphasized. “During our time together, a patrol officer will meet the dogs and spend some time getting acclimated with the potential adoptee,” he stated. “Once the
hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs and hot sausage sandwiches with toppings including grilled onions and peppers. “An assortment of delicious homemade desserts and beverages will also be on the menu,” Ruhl stated.
Holding the picnic is a tradition for the church members, and the event helps the church stay connected with the community, Ruhl noted.
“Church picnics have been around for a long time and are considered a community social event,” she said. “(It’s) a way for people to gather together, talk and share food.
Church picnics are a great place to see old friends and make new friends.”
Ruhl’s Church will offer vacation Bible school (VBS) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 17, through Friday, July 21, with a theme of “Sky - Everything Is Possible With God.”
“Activities each evening will include praiseworthy music,
Bible adventures where children experience God’s word, fun-filled games, awesome crafts and a yummy takehome snack,” said Bev Snavely, who leads the VBS planning committee with her husband, Dennis. “The last evening of VBS, Friday, will be family fun night where parents are encouraged to stay and participate. The evening will end with an ice cream social.” Children may preregis-
ter for VBS or sign up on the first night.
Additionally, the church will offer services in the grove on Sundays beginning July 9 and running through Aug. 13. Services will begin at 7 p.m. For more information on upcoming events, to register for VBS or to see a list of speakers for the grove services, visit https:// ruhlschurch.org or call 717665-3400.
dog is comfortable, we will take it for a short walk and let it explore our patrol cars. We typically do not conduct an actual ride along as many of the pups are recovering from separation anxiety or other forms of poor situations. We attempt to keep them in an environment they are somewhat familiar with.”
The goal of the program is to help each dog find his or her forever home. “To date, we have been able to assist every single one of our ‘ride along’ dogs in finding new homes,” Klock shared. “Many of the new owners will send Keystone Pet Place pictures once the pup is settled into their new home. I try to post these on the Mount Joy PD Facebook page as we receive them.”
Music students present recital
Students of private lesson teachers Carole A. Bubacz and Tess E. Sult performed in a joint recital on May 21 at Christ Church United Church of Christ in Elizabethtown. Students shared a variety of Baroque, Romantic and Classical era solo pieces.
Piano performers included Lucy Downing, Lindsey Shaud, Dominic Juarbe, Sarah Heinz and Stewart
Carter. Performers on flute were Tania Rush and Jasmine Aument. Sarah performed a violin work by Handel in addition to her piece on piano; her violin teacher is Jill Placeway.
Sult and Bubacz concluded the musical presentation with Chaminade’s Concertino for Flute and Piano. The recital was attended by family and friends of the musicians.
Klock credits community support with the program’s success, noting, “Many of Mount Joy’s businesses help in the promotion through sharing our posts and tagging individuals who might be a good fit. I have also been on calls for service where residents ask if a certain dog was adopted or how they can help. The best way for our community to contribute is to like/comment/share so each pup receives high engagement on social media.”
He encourages anyone who is interested in potentially adopting a featured dog to contact Keystone Pet Place. “The adoption process starts with a meet and greet,” he said. “If the fit between the rescue and interested owner is not the
best, there is no pressure involved to continue with an adoption. April and the rest of the staff at Keystone Pet Place are incredibly helpful and honest through the entire process.”
Klock, who has been with the police department for three years, is the dog dad of two and understands the impact a furry friend can have on a person. “Oftentimes, I see people on their worst day and know the friendship of a pup can or would help people in bad situations,” he said. “Furthermore, I look forward to being greeted by my two boys when I head home from a rough call or shift. No matter how I’m feeling, they’re always jumping up and down to see me when I walk in the door.”
Community improvement grants awarded

The grants were awarded in support of projects that address food waste prevention, reduction and recovery across the Giant Company’s operating area. The recipients were named at an event held on June 22 at Dickinson College in Carlisle, which received $20,000 to complete an anaerobic digester project for conversion of community food waste and dairy manure into biogas and grid-tied electricity.
Grants range from $2,500 to $20,000. Projects located in the Giant Company’s

The following local Pennsylvania organizations are the recipients of 2023 Healing the Planet grants: City of Lancaster, Lancaster Compost Co-Op; Creative Community Grow, Harrisburg; Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education, York; and

Elizabethtown Fair seeks queen contestants
BY CATHY MOLITORISDo you want to be the face of the Elizabethtown Fair? If you’re a young woman between the ages of 16 and 20, you’re encouraged to apply for the Elizabethtown Fair queen program.
The queen will represent the Elizabethtown Fair, which will run from Monday, Aug. 21, through Saturday, Aug. 26, this year. “She helps to promote what our fair has to offer to the community and encourage our contestants,” said Lia Swartz, fair queen program coordinator. “The queen attends events during the week such as handing out ribbons, crowning the senior king and queen, and participating in children’s games and fair auctions. Not only does the queen participate in the events during the week of the fair, but the entire court is encouraged to participate.”
Swartz, who was crowned Elizabethtown Fair queen in 2013 and state queen in 2014, said the queen competition offers more than just a crown and sash. “The competition is full of opportunity - the opportunity to learn more
about the fair and the community, to make new friends and to gain new skills,” she noted. “Don’t let the fear of an area of the competition hold you back from trying. My personal experience running for fair queen opened doors for me to learn more about myself as well as introducing me to people who would change my life.”
Components of the fair queen competition include a written essay of 300 words or fewer on the topic of “What My Fair Means to My Community,” as well as a personal interview, a three- to fiveminute speech on the topic of “Why You Should Come to My Fair” and answering an impromptu question. Traditionally, part of the competition, including the crowning of the winner, takes place on the opening night of the Elizabethtown Fair.
The fair queen and the alternate will be awarded premiums in the form of scholarships for higher education. The fair queen will reign for one year and will participate in the Pennsylvania State Fair Queen Competition to be held in Hershey
in January of 2024.
Swartz emphasized that she works with the contestants on skills to help them succeed, and she noted that the program has developed a “Queen’s Closet” for any contestant who needs business or formalwear for the competition.
“This is a scholarship program, but it also offers so much in the ways of selfdevelopment,” Swartz stated.
“Even if you do not win the title of queen the first time
you run, there is so much still to gain from participating.”
The deadline to submit an application for fair queen is Monday, July 10. For more information, including an application and complete contest details, visit www.etown fair.com and choose the “Contests” tab. Information may also be found by following the Elizabethtown Fair Queen Program on Facebook or by emailing etownfairqueen @gmail.com.
