Taste of Mount Joy Cruisin’ Cuisine to feature cars, food and fun

Startyour engines and bring your appetite to the 20th annual Taste of Mount Joy Cruisin’ Cuisine. The event will be held on Saturday, July 22, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. along Main Street in Mount Joy from New Haven to Barbara Street. Vehicles, including antique cars, classic cars, muscle cars, street rods, Corvettes, motorcycles and trucks, will be in the spotlight, and local restaurants will serve a variety of food.

In the past, Main Street Mount Joy had hosted the event, but when that organization disbanded earlier this year, a group of community volunteers stepped up to continue the show. “We have volunteers from the Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems, Mount Joy Rotary, Mount Joy Lions Club, Voyage Mount Joy and the Red Rose Antique Car Club,” said Linda Eberly of the people who make up the event committee. “People in

the community really came together to see this show continue.” It was especially important to Linda, a member of the Kiwanis, because her father, Jay Eberly, was one of the show’s founders. The first 200 registrants for the car show will receive a dash plaque featuring Jay’s car, a 1933 Plymouth. Approximately 50 awards will be presented in various categories, sponsored by local businesses, clubs and organizations, said Allory Melhorn, who represents Voyage Mount Joy on the committee. Whitmoyer Auto Group is the event’s major sponsor. Additional sponsors include Marietta Notary & Messenger Service, Sheetz Funeral Home, State Farm Insurance and Drohan Brick & Supply. A Best of Show award will be sponsored by the cooperating event organizers, and five memorial awards will also be presented. Additional members of the event committee include Ferne Silberman and event chair Ron Carper,

representing the Rotary Club; Harry Goehring, representing the Lions Club; Ken and Cathy Hoshauer, representing Red Rose Antique Car Club; and Gene Barton.

Area restaurants and food trucks will participate in the event, set up either at a food court area on Main and Delta streets or at their business location. Participants will include Bube’s Brewery, which will serve barbecue sandwiches and chips; Isaac’s Craft Kitchen & Brewery, serving walking hoagie dip, strawberry lemonade, pretzel bites and chips; Harvey’s Main Street BBQ, which will provide Cajun sausage and pork barbecue; Frisco’s Chicken, which will serve empanadas and chicha morada; Two Cousins Pizza; Rita’s Italian Ice; the Rotary Club offering fries; the Lions Club selling hot dogs; and Florin Church of the Brethren, which will feature a variety of whoopie pies. Tables and chairs will be set up in the food court area, provided by JB Hostetter & Sons.

Benjamin Franklin may have died more than 200 years ago, but you can meet the man in person when Craig Hall presents “An Evening with Ben Franklin.” He’ll be joined in the program by Sheryl Williams, who will portray Franklin’s friend Madame Brillon.

Hosted by the Mount Joy Area Historical Society, the program will be held on Monday, July 17, at Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy. It will begin at 7 p.m. and will be followed by refreshments.

The church, 625 Union School Road, will hold its third annual Christmas in July Bazaar on Saturday, July 15. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

“It’s just a fun time to come in, wander around, pick up some inexpensive items and maybe win

something, too,” said deacon Joe Cingle.

He encourages attendees to participate in the church’s “Elves Fill the Shelves” initiative by bringing food items to be donated to local pantries and/or school supplies to be donated to local schools.

“For every three items you bring, you’ll get a free Basket Bonanza ticket as a way to say thank you,” Cingle said. The Basket Bonanza will feature more than 150 themed See Bazaar pg 4

Old-fashioned fun will be in the spotlight when GEARS hosts Movies in the Park. The series will feature a showing of “Frozen II” on Thursday, July 20, and “Cars 3” on Thursday, Aug. 10. Rain dates for the films are Thursday, July 27, and Thursday, Aug. 17. Movies will begin at dusk, approximately 8:30 p.m., at the amphitheater in Elizabethtown Community Park, 201 S. Mount Joy St.

There is no charge to attend the movies, and people should bring chairs or blankets to sit on. GEARS has been hosting Movies in the Park since 2004, shared Lee Eckert, GEARS program coodinator, and the series helps the organization fulfill

its mission of providing programming for the whole family. “GEARS loves to offer free family events for the community,” he said. “We love bringing families together in different settings throughout the year.”

He credits event sponsor Knowlton Dental Associates with making the series possible. “We would not be able to run this event without (the business’s) generosity,” he stated. “We pay a licensing fee for each movie, and they are very expensive.”

Along with covering fees for the films, Knowlton Dental Associates also provides free snacks and giveaways at every movie.

Eckert encourages people to enjoy a summer evening in the park to socialize and

relax with an affordable night out. “It’s fun to get your family out of the house and experience an old drive-in movie atmosphere,” he stated.

“Also, taking a family out seems to cost a lot of money

these days. This is a great way to get the family out for a night and not spend a penny.”

For more information on GEARS programming, visit www.getintogears.org.

GEARS will offer several recreational programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person cost, with a discounted rate for GEARS members. To register or for more information, visit www.getinto gears.org or call GEARS at 717-367-0355.

Snapology will offer two programs for children ages 3 to 5 on Monday to Wednesday, July 24 to 26, at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown.

A Jr. Scientists program, “All About Animals,” will take place from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Children will analyze the differences between vertebrates and invertebrates, construct their way through the butterfly and frog life cycles, build reptiles and examine the differences and similarities between insects and arachnids using Kid K’Nex pieces.

Children may then attend a Jr. Engineers program from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Using DUPLO blocks, participants will build and manipulate simple models, allowing them to experience pulleys, levers, gears, wheels and axles while exploring energy, buoyancy and balance. The class will also include freebuilding time to promote creativity.

A Learn to Bowl and Bowl Better Mini-Camp will be available for children ages 8 to 12 on Monday to Thursday, July 24 to 27, from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. at Clearview

Lanes, 1990 W. Main St., Mount Joy. Lessons will include arm swing, a fourstep approach, targeting and spare making. Clearview Lanes staff will instruct.

GEARS will offer a trip to

the Bronx Zoo in New York City on Saturday, Aug. 5. Participants will depart at 7:30 a.m. from the parking lot of Elizabethtown Area High School, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. The deluxe ticket

includes the zoo shuttle, the monorail, the World of Reptiles, Jungle World and more. The Bronx Zoo spans more than 256 acres and has more than 22 exhibits and many attractions and experiences.

Using a river for recovery

There’s something therapeutic about paddling in a kayak out on the water, said Bill Butler, chapter secretary for Susquehanna Valley Team River Runner (TRR). The sport helps participants hone motor skills, requires focus and instills discipline. It also might save lives.

Founded in 2004, TRR has a mission to provide health and healing for injured military personnel, people on

active duty, veterans and disabled members of the community. “Team River Runner literally started in an elevator in Walter Reed Medical Center,” said Butler, a Manheim resident who helped start the Susquehanna Valley chapter in 2015. “Our executive director, Joe Mornini, was visiting a friend of his who had been wounded in combat.” Mornini, a special education teacher, had used kayaks to help children to improve motor coordination and tackle emo-

tional issues, and he invited the veteran he was visiting to try it out. The organization quickly grew to almost 70 chapters across the country.

Butler emphasized that while the program revolves around kayaks and other forms of adventure paddling, its mission is much broader.

“The kayak is just the tool we’re using,” he said. “The whole point of this program is to get our veterans who are having difficulty adjusting to life after serving out into the community

with people who are like-minded and enjoy the sport.”

Noting that 22 veterans a day die by suicide, Butler said TRR is working to address that concern. “We’re hoping to reduce that number by getting veterans re-engaged with the community,” he remarked. “Using a sport like kayaking helps them do that in a disciplined way, providing structure and way for a veteran to dip their toe in the water of getting back into the community.”

An Operation Desert Storm combat veteran, Butler knows firsthand what it’s like to return to civilian life after service. He returned from war with 80% disability and has difficulty walking or climbing steps. “You put me in a kayak, and I’m completely transformed,” he stated, noting that he’s seen the same transformation in the participants of TRR, many of whom become instructors themselves after going through the program.

TRR is also open to mem-

bers of the community who have disabilities, and several of the Susquehanna Valley chapter’s biggest events revolve around people who are vision impaired. Kids are OuttaSight (KAOS) provides paddle sport opportunities to children, with TRR veterans serving as leaders. TRR partners with VisionCorps in Lancaster to offer the program.

All of the programs TRR offers are free of charge, and the organization relies on community support as well as

grants for funding. “It can cost $800 to $1,000 apiece for each kayak,” Butler said, noting that the chapter currently has 23 kayaks. Additional equipment needed includes life jackets and paddles for each participant. Butler said that nationally, TRR hosts close to 3,000 paddle sessions annually, and the Susquehanna Valley chapter has served more than 150 paddlers to date.

He hopes more veterans will join the program, and he invites people to volunteer, noting, “If a kayaker wants to help, I’d love for them to become part of this and watch all the amazing things that happen out on the water.”

For more information on TRR, email Butler at Bill. Butler@TeamRiverRunner.org or Jennifer Eaton, chapter coordinator, at jennifer.eaton @teamriverrunner.org or visit https://svtrr.org.

The book selections will be “Grandma Lisa’s Humming, Buzzing, Chirping Garden” by Lisa Doseff, illustrated by Duncan Robertson, July 13; “Counting on Katherine” by Helaine Becker, illustrated by Dow Phumiruk, on July 20; and “Elizabeth Leads the Way: Elizabeth Cady Stanton and the Right to Vote” by Tanya Lee Stone, illustrated by Rebecca

Gibbon, on July 27. The program is free, but registration is required. Story times will take place outdoors unless it rains, in which case the events will be moved indoors. One adult age 18 or older should attend for every two children or every household.

Creating Habitat for Butterflies is planned for Saturday, July 29, at 10 a.m., offered by the Friends of the Tanger Arboretum and presenter Debra Carman. Attendees will learn about the habitat elements necessary for the survival of butterflies from egg to adult, as well as the critical ecological role native plants and butterflies play in food webs. Carman, a Penn State Master Gardener in York County, will discuss multiple species of butterflies commonly found in Pennsylvania and display live

caterpillars during the question-and-answer session. There is a fee, with a discount for those under 18. Events planned for fair week

The 2023 Elizabethtown Fair will include a variety of contests this year. The fair will run from Monday, Aug. 21, to Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, High Street, Elizabethtown. To learn more about the fair, visit www.etownfair.com.

The Group Exhibits competition is open to any group, including youth, adult, or both. Entries must be tabletop exhibits with a maximum size of 4 by 10 by 6 feet and should provide the viewer with a better understanding of agriculture and/or agribusiness either through their educational value or their promotion of a product. Each entry will be judged on how much it attracts attention, arouses interest, and conveys a message, as well as on design, workmanship, and originality.

All group exhibits must be entered on a General Entry Form and mailed with an entry fee to The Elizabethtown Fair, P.O. Box 285, Eliz-

A parent or guardian and one other adult chaperone must escort the baby to the race mat. One adult chaperone will be positioned at each end of the mat, and the chaperones may use toys, bottles, binkies, and other items to help encourage the baby to crawl. The adults may not move or reach beyond their designated area during the race.

The baby who crawls from one side of the mat to the other the fastest will receive a cash prize. If no babies have crossed the finish line after 3 minutes, the baby who is closest to the finish line will be declared the winner. Babies who walk at any time during the race will be disqualified.

In addition to the race, competitors may participate in a costume contest with the

goal is to teach the public. When we do a presentation, it’s almost like setting up a movie set, with full costumes.”

The couple presents living history programs on people from the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War II and the Vietnam War, as well as characters from the Old West. A retired attorney, Hall has been into history, particularly military history, since he served in the U.S. Army in late 1960s, specializing in military intelligence. He began his second career as a Civil War re-enactor, but switched to living history to focus on teaching his audience. He met Williams at a re-enactment event, and the two soon learned they shared a love of history. Williams, a professional actress, works for the Lititz Historical Society as a costumed tour guide and also portrays various characters from the same time periods Hall focuses on.

Both said they particularly enjoy their Franklin and Brillon presentation, because they like spotlighting the Founding Father. “I love this man’s sense of humor,” Hall said of Franklin. Added Williams, “The thing about Ben Frankin is you cannot help but love him. You only have to look at his face to see what a kind, gentle soul he really was. ... He was witty, urbane and progressive.”

Her character, Anne-Louise Boyvin d’Hardancourt Brillon de Jouy, was a French aristocrat who befriended Franklin during the time he spent in France during the Revolutionary War. “They became lifelong friends,” she shared. “He was like a father figure to her.”

Hall noted that the program will focus on Franklin’s role in the Revolutionary War and his outlook on life at the time. “Franklin was instrumental in helping us win the war,” he

remarked. “He was also a man who grew and changed over time. He went from someone who was accepting of the institution of slavery to someone who vehemently objected to it.”

Hall and Williams perform their living history programs throughout the region, going to retirement communities, schools and other organizations. “We call our events ‘The Guest Is History,’” Williams commented.

They both believe in the importance of teaching history, not only as a way to honor the people and events of the past, but also as an opportunity to better understand America as a nation.

“If we don’t study history, we’re doomed to repeat it,” Hall stated. “It’s important to remember and understand - or try to understand - our history.”

“An Evening with Ben Franklin” is free and open to the public. To contact Hall about future programs, call 720-217-8696.
